What Gingrich, Santorum, etc. got right about Romney

Back in the heat of the primary season, Republican leaders grew very uneasy when Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry began to attack Mitt Romney as an out-of-touch rich guy who built his wealth through “vulture capitalism” (Rick Perry’s term) and was hiding something in his taxes. Among other concerns, GOP leaders recognized that if such attacks on Romney worked, they might end up with Gingrich, Santorum or Perry as their nominee.

That was not an outcome they were willing to risk, so they quickly ruled that line of attack out of bounds.

These days, however, they may be reaping the consequences of that decision. The latest CNN poll has Barack Obama pulling out to a seven-point lead over Romney. Ipsos/Reuters also puts the margin at seven, while Fox News puts it at nine. And as Fox notes, the internals are more worrisome still for Romney:

“Obama’s advantage comes largely from increased support among independents, who now pick him over Romney by 11 percentage points. Some 30 percent of independents are undecided. Last month, Obama had a four-point edge among independents, while Romney had the advantage from April through early June….

“The Obama campaign has spent heavily on advertising attacking Romney’s time at Bain Capital and his tax returns. And it appears to be working. Romney’s favorable rating dropped six percentage points since last month and now sits at 46 percent, down from 52 percent in mid-July. At the same time his unfavorable rating went up five points. Romney’s favorable rating has held steady among his party faithful, but it’s down eight percentage points among independents and seven points among Democrats.”

Moreover, Fox notes, Obama outpolls Romney by eight percentage points on the question of which man is more likely to help people achieve the American dream, which constitutes the foundation of the Romney strategy. And the erosion of support isn’t limited to the party’s nominees:

“While Democrats typically hold a slight edge over Republicans nationally in party identification, this attitude shifts based on events and changing sentiment. These days, voters seem to be even more likely to consider themselves Democrats than Republicans. There has been a five-percentage-point Democratic advantage, on average, in Fox News polls this year. In this poll, the Democratic edge is nine points. That may or may not be on the high side, although it is similar to other recent national polls conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, which put Democrats up 11 percentage points, and the Pew Research Center, with Democrats up by 13 percent.”

(In a humorous aside, only one major polling outfit in the last three weeks — the ever-reliable Rasmussen — has Romney leading, with the former Massachusetts governor up by four. See below.)

realclear

Source: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/general_election_romney_vs_obama-1171.html

It’s still early, of course — the campaign holds a lot of unanticipated twists and turns ahead. But for the moment, the line of attack against Romney that Republican leaders ruled off-limits in the GOP primary seems to be working quite well when employed by Democrats. The party’s decision to protect Romney back in January and February — in effect, Gingrich et al were told not to look the dressage horse in the mouth — meant that he was never forced to develop an explanation or defense against such criticism, and it appears that he has yet to do so to this day.

With voters now forming their early impressions of the GOP nominee, that could prove to have been a major blunder.

If that’s the case, why didn’t Kerry, Edwards, Kennedy, win?

Kerry and Edwards wealth were due to their spouses. Therefore, “they” were not the richest candidate. Kennedy’s wealth was due to his parents, and not because of his own efforts.

Therefore, they didn’t build it.

I suggest that the Cons should try their best to get Newt and Sanitarium installed as their candidates at the GOP convention in 2 weeks — after all, Mitt is a train wreck for a candidate — and then see how the remaining 2% of “independent voters” decide if they like Newt and/or Sanitarium.

Good luck, Cons! :)

Well, they got scaled back when people started dropping them. When they cut R&D, teams jumped to greener pastures. Overall, I don’t think it’s good for them to be losing manufacturers. Personally, I’d like to see more different manufacturers jump into the fray.

Equestrian therapy has been on the rise for a few years now. I briefly dated one girl years back who owned a business doing just that. They didn’t work with MS people though. They worked with kids who had a variety of behavioral and emotional problems and who came from really bad backgrounds. It sure seemed to work wonders for them from what she was telling me.

The write off for Ann Romney’s $77,000 saddle gear is fair game just due to the sheer expense of the gear. But mocking a therapy that is showing itself to be beneficial for a number of people from different backgrounds who suffer from a variety of ailments isn’t.

Gingrich, Mike Huckabee and Michele Bachmann all sing the praises of David Barton, offical faux historian of the religious right. Barton has published a number of books through his own organization. His first book to be published by an actual publisher was “The Jefferson Lies” which came out earlier this year. It was published by the Thomas Nelson Company, a publisher of Christian books. Yesterday Thomas Nelson pulled “The Jefferson Lies” off the market due to
“factual errors, selective quotes, and highly misleading claims.”

It seems that Barton, an influential republican, is scheduled to speak at the republican convention later this month. If the GOP has any hope of maintaining the facade of an actual political party and not an evangelical religious party dedicated to ignorance and falsehood surely they will give Barton the boot.

Nate Silver has given pretty consistent upward trends to Obama’s chances of winning. Today, Obama has a 73.3% chance of winning the electoral vote with 50.9% of the popular vote.

On June 26, he had a 61.1% chance. The NEXT DAY he had a 65.1% chance. That trend held until this past week, when he jumped again to a new high.

Nope. We play at Tiger stadium. That’s OUR house! In one of the great streaks in college football Alabama went unbeaten in 19 games at LSU from 1969 until Nick Saban finally beat Alabama in 2004. LSU won again in 06 playing against a probation reduced Bama team under Mike Shula. Otherwise the LSU win in 2010 is pretty much the only time besides Saban that an LSU team has defeated an Alabama team at full strength in its own stadium since 1969. We own that stadium just like we own the alltime head to head series with LSU 46-25 nearly doubling up the tiggers.

There isn’t a very good “check and balance” on the left wing.

I agree, but not in the way most think.

When you have an increasingly radicalized right wing in this country, which is already fundamentally plutocratic and anti-democratic, it is only natural for the center of the opposition party to drift rightward as well.

This is something that people just don’t seem to get.

Obama’s shortcomings don’t stem from him being too nutty-lefty-loopy; his problems is that so much of his Administration is happy to work with all the executive power delegated to the Bush Administration, hence the kill lists, the surveillance, the failure to try international terrorists in regular ol’ civilian courts and, obviously, hence the willingness to negotiate the PPACA from the Blue-dog center (those weak-ass “Public Option” programs, which were quickly surrendered, rather than a robust single payer as a starting point) rather than the Bernie Saunders left.

stands: I would go further and say the Democrats right now can get away with a lot BECAUSE of how much the GOP are getting away with. And, in fact, the GOP weakening themselves only gives Democrats more of a “sure thing” that they can easily mess up by going overboard. And if they do that, the entire country will no longer be run as center-right, but as mostly-right-wing, due to people swapping over to GOP in a hurry when the Democrats go overboard, even though the GOP has been going overboard the past 4 years on nearly every issue. People would rather go with the devil they know. But if the Democrats can not be as d*ckish in a pretty clear way, and keep it that way, that will eventually force the GOP back to the center or splinter their party.

Why Romney can’t defend capitalism

Rick Perry describes what Bain does as “vulture capitalism,” picking the flesh off the bones of corporate corpses, while New Gingrich’s dark charge was that Bain was no more than “rich people figuring out clever legal ways to loot a company.”

It just seems strange, after all the sound and fury over gay rights vis a vis Chik-Fil-A last week, and this week, there’s nothin’ at all about Mitt Romney officially backing the rights of gays to serve in the Boy Scouts of America.

uh– Chick fil A is a private company. The boy scouts are a non profit. One doesn’t “serve” in the scouts, one volunteers.

Really rather rational if one cranks up a few brain cells.

“When you have an increasingly radicalized right wing in this country”

LMAO. The “increasingly radical right wing” took back over the House in 2010, made significant gains in the Senate, holds a majority of governor’s posts, state legislatures, etc. The “radicals” own Georgia easily. Then the “radicalized right wing” nominated Romney, whom I consider a RINO and who gave us Obamacare-light in Massachusetts.

Funny how you libs have convinced yourselves that the Republican party is out-of-touch right wing extremists. Thinking people read your stuff and laugh out loud.

“sheesh. Are you guys already back to arguing over which unpaid NFL farm club is the goodest?”

Geez. Another crazy who thinks the U.S. election is more important than Alabama football.

Again, That Black Guy, start by reading the entire exchange between me and Paul before spouting off at me about things that bother you. Also, I said nothing about the dollar value of any write off and it means nothing to me. I’m glad it means something to you though.

i’m not sure anyone has a problem with Mrs Romney’s choice of MS Therapy, its the 80k business tax deduction Mr Romney takes on the horse that is the issue. its stuff like this that makes me wonder what else is in his tax returns that we will never see.

the GOP weakening themselves only gives Democrats more of a “sure thing” that they can easily mess up by going overboard.

But what, pray tell, do you mean by “going overboard?” are you seriously suggesting that, for instance, the modest expansion of SCHIP was too much? that a sensible application of Medicaid to cover more of the working poor (via the PPACA), or the fill-in-the-state-budget-wounds of the Recovery Act, was some kind of profligate spending?

I hope not.

Heck, not even Adeleson is taking that bet. His casinos odds are the same as others; Romney will lose. Of course the game still has to be played, but Adeleson isn’t a gazillionaire because he loses a lot.

A vote for Mitt, will turn our country into $hit and they will do everything possible to blame the dems. Just like they are blaming President Obama now for the Bush wars and depression.

One way to tell who Ann may be picking for VP, is go to Wiki, and look which candidate has the most the edits on their page.

Romney is a career that has never done much more than amass a sizable personal wealth. It has not helped anyone but Romney and his family. It has not established any aspect of social or human good.
Additionally, the observations of Gingrich, Santorum and Perry about lying, vulturism, and disconnection resonate with statements like, “I like firing people who work for me.”

Unpaid, my cheeks! SEC is #1, cuz they have the highest salary cap, imo.
