Back in the heat of the primary season, Republican leaders grew very uneasy when Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry began to attack Mitt Romney as an out-of-touch rich guy who built his wealth through “vulture capitalism” (Rick Perry’s term) and was hiding something in his taxes. Among other concerns, GOP leaders recognized that if such attacks on Romney worked, they might end up with Gingrich, Santorum or Perry as their nominee.
That was not an outcome they were willing to risk, so they quickly ruled that line of attack out of bounds.
These days, however, they may be reaping the consequences of that decision. The latest CNN poll has Barack Obama pulling out to a seven-point lead over Romney. Ipsos/Reuters also puts the margin at seven, while Fox News puts it at nine. And as Fox notes, the internals are more worrisome still for Romney:
“Obama’s advantage comes largely from increased support among independents, who now pick him over Romney by 11 percentage points. Some 30 percent of independents are undecided. Last month, Obama had a four-point edge among independents, while Romney had the advantage from April through early June….
“The Obama campaign has spent heavily on advertising attacking Romney’s time at Bain Capital and his tax returns. And it appears to be working. Romney’s favorable rating dropped six percentage points since last month and now sits at 46 percent, down from 52 percent in mid-July. At the same time his unfavorable rating went up five points. Romney’s favorable rating has held steady among his party faithful, but it’s down eight percentage points among independents and seven points among Democrats.”
Moreover, Fox notes, Obama outpolls Romney by eight percentage points on the question of which man is more likely to help people achieve the American dream, which constitutes the foundation of the Romney strategy. And the erosion of support isn’t limited to the party’s nominees:
“While Democrats typically hold a slight edge over Republicans nationally in party identification, this attitude shifts based on events and changing sentiment. These days, voters seem to be even more likely to consider themselves Democrats than Republicans. There has been a five-percentage-point Democratic advantage, on average, in Fox News polls this year. In this poll, the Democratic edge is nine points. That may or may not be on the high side, although it is similar to other recent national polls conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, which put Democrats up 11 percentage points, and the Pew Research Center, with Democrats up by 13 percent.”
(In a humorous aside, only one major polling outfit in the last three weeks — the ever-reliable Rasmussen — has Romney leading, with the former Massachusetts governor up by four. See below.)

Source: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/general_election_romney_vs_obama-1171.html
It’s still early, of course — the campaign holds a lot of unanticipated twists and turns ahead. But for the moment, the line of attack against Romney that Republican leaders ruled off-limits in the GOP primary seems to be working quite well when employed by Democrats. The party’s decision to protect Romney back in January and February — in effect, Gingrich et al were told not to look the dressage horse in the mouth — meant that he was never forced to develop an explanation or defense against such criticism, and it appears that he has yet to do so to this day.
With voters now forming their early impressions of the GOP nominee, that could prove to have been a major blunder.

To clarify, I do not care for the strategy of demonizing a person because they availed themselves of all deductions provided by law. The fault, if there is any, is with Congress and the law, not the taxpayer.
I have faulted Pres Obama for not embracing at least part of Simpson-Bowles. Would the Republican House have shut off any efforts at such reform? Of course. But it would at least have demonstrated leadership on the President’s part to forge ahead with such proposals.

Go look up Rasmussen’s EC projections. He has the states that he says are solid & likely one or the other and the swing states.
All you need to do his put you cursor over each swing state and see what Rasmussen is polling. It doesn’t equal a Romney victory. yes polls can change, but betting on all the “What ifs” to go your way is not a good bet.
That’s why Adelson’s casinos/bookies are betting against Romney, even though he personally wants Obama gone.

After living thru President Bush, nothing could be worse, I hope, but with Romney you just can’t tell. With President Obama you know what you get and its been improvement to date and if the GOP would get their head out of their butts and work for the good of the country, the deficit could be addressed if that “really” is a concern, it wasn’t when President Reagan or President Bush lived in the white house.

Oh yes, people do indeed watch polls, which can easily be manipulated, and all kinds of media, which is definitely manipulated. Lots of people know how to read between the lines of the information they’re being fed (why would you believe everything you hear?), many more don’t want to for fear of what they’ll find out, and the rest are too stupid to wonder about the veracity of the media.

Well, y’all can hold out hope for Romney if you want to, but me, I’m planning to be off of Bookman’s blog the day after the election so I won’t have to hear from No. 1 Foxy Lady. I got a wife and a boss. I don’t need a third person to tell me to go f*** myself. Like I said before, Romney couldn’t get a date if he was the only man on a island with the Women Marines.
Anyhow, I’m hauling and lugging and trying to get you ready to swap weird music tonight. Sorry I ain’t been on here alot in the past couple days. I been keeping track of this PGA tournament over in S. Carolina. Those pros sure play by weird rules. They even putt the ball if they’re only a couple feet from the cup. Heck, me and my buddy Jim Earl and my other buddy Joe Bill use the one-putt rule and we sometimes use a tee from the fairway, but don’t tell Sooth that, he’ll run and blab to the course ranger and try and get us kicked off of the course.

“Taxpayer got it right- that is the Karl Rove method of blaming someone else for stinking up the room after his candidate got caught laying one.”
Time for a little off-topic levity. From my university undergraduate days (and it’s not about me, okay?); guy made the unfortunate mistake of asking out an attractive young lady in front of a group. She not only refused the date, she did it in a very put-down way.
Fast forward a couple of weeks. It’s finals time. Guy goes to the library. It’s super crowded. There’s a long table, one seat open… right next to little miss put-down. He takes the seat and after a few minutes, lets loose with a silent but deadly (this guy’s gas could peel the wallpaper off a wall). People start fidgeting as they get the first whiff and this guy grabs his books, stands up, looks at little miss put-down and loudly exclaims “THAT IS SO DISGUISTING!” and stomps away.

Both parties have more in common than not…they both take half truths to lambast opponents, they both align equally with special interests, they both sell the fact that they can control employment, wall street, lobbyist et al but they truly have little to no power over each and continue to (remember President Trillions “the days of lobbyist controlling DC agenda are over..”…he quickly turned into same old politician..no different from Bush and other predecessors) be defined by campaign funds vs what is good for the people.
Congress is the problem…they are now totally indebted to cash from special interests..they are supposed to represent us but with only 16% approval (on a good day), clearly their interests don’t lie with us….until we get balance budget amendment and limit and amendment to eliminate private campaign funds relying totally on tax dollars…not a thing will change regardless which dope occupies WH.

How would you know? What’s your background in stats?
“Gallup polls all registered voters but does a far better job of ensuring their result accuracy.”
And they accomplish that how, exactly? Please tell me.
“Beginning in October Gallup will begin polling only likely voters because by then the undecided voters will be making their decision. Rasmussen polls only likely voters.”
Rasmussen also deliberately skews its numbers towards what they THINK the turnout will be on Election Day. In other words, they use a made-up multiplier. Did you know that?
“The polls will begin to reflect a more accurate condition by late September. I follow Gallup and Rasmussen the others in my opinion are no where near as accurate.”
Unless you have any statistical grounding, I fail to see why your opinion has anything to do with their *actual* accuracy.

this is a critical signal, bee-cuzz –
there is the political calculation that, if Romney is destined to lose, that Republican focus will switch to the Senate & House races and that means turn-out, turn-out, turn-out.
what they don’t want is, Republicans in blue/purple states to see that Romney is going to lose their state and stay home in protest, because Mitt is not conservative enough.
By throwing red meat to the base this early, it can let the Senate/House Campaigns focus on getting out the faithful by the church bus-full
I think today, they gave up on Rmoney winning, and now will focus on the
House & Senate. Another indicator of this will be the selection of

There is some good info on Huffpo as well as far right or left sites. Not all the articles on those sites are BS. The thing is that whether left or right they tend to cover stories that are often true but which support their particular narrative of course. Or they just cover some stories that the dominant media doesn’t have the time and space to cover- they can’t report everything. I just think people have to sift through the BS stuff that is pure unsupported opinion and focus on reading about actual events that the dominant media may have just missed.

Gallup and Rasmussen poll daily with the largest cumulative sample amounts in their running tallies over a pro-longed period of time. Rasmussen consistently shows the race about even or Romney ahead by a couple of points or so and Gallup consistently shows Obama tied or ahead by a couple of points or so. Rasmussen uses a likely voter model and weighs the poll based on realistic party breakdown. Gallup poll is is among all registered voters. A likely voter model would skew a bit to Romney as polls among all registered voters consistently skew towards the Democrat. Which means that for all intents and purposes, Gallup results are consistently far closer to what Rasmussen consistently shows than to many of these other polss which get released every couple of weeks. I know you don’t respect Rasmussen, but how about Gallup? The Fox News poll from yesterday showing Obama ahead by 9 seems to have over-sampled Democrats by about 5 or 6 points or so. That’s the same situation for many of the polls show Obama comfortably ahead. If you weigh many of the polls showing Obama comfortably ahead by a more realistic party breakdown, then most of these also show a tight race with Obama maybe 2 or 3 points ahead, but still well under 50% which is critical measure since history shows us most undecided voters break against the incumbent.

No. They do not base their weighting on a realistic party breakdown. They base their weighting on what they *think* the turnout will be on Election Day, even though there is no reliable or accurate means of predicting that.
In other words, they use a guesswork multiplier. In the financial world, that’s called fraud.

cnn has gone downhill quickly after firing their President.
They are no floundering with no direction.
I think they should fire all analysts, wolf, cafferty and others that give their stupid opinions, and just report the news without bias or the AP.
Let Americans decide what to think not talking heads finding a niche in the market to get paid..

The truth of the matter is Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry would have destroyed the Republican Party if they were nominated. Their message works in a very local market and the image, real as it is, would have tainted the whole party including the tea party as the “touched in the head” bunch they are. They might have lost both houses along with the presidency. Romney was a damage control candidate that has taken some legs because of the horrible economy and the superpac money he has accumulated.
They have tried to keep Romney as buried as possible but as the light hits this stiff, over the top preppy, with no vision only criticism of other men’s program and who himself in real life has had his most successful years doing exactly what O offers. The polls and the truth or lack of it are catching up with him. The country has a hard time electing a man they don’t like and the press has done all it can to hold back what a real bore this guy is til now. One thing Newt could do is entertain, Mitt is like watching a Baptist church service over and over again delivered by a Yankee without his heart being in it. He really doesn’t understand his constituency and neither do I, but I am not running for office representing the nuts.

Send some of that “good stuff” to WSB in care of Erik Ericson. He needs all the help he can get
If you haven’t heard him, tune in around 7 or 8 in the evening. You might agree with him politically, but you will quickly tune out.

I found Herman to be pretty boring as well, it would be tough for me to make a choice between the two for “most” boring.
That’s what hacks me off about Boortz. Until he sold out to the Republicans a few years ago his show was great. Whether or not you agreed with him, he was entertaining. Now it’s all just “Obama sucks” for 4 1/2 hours. No creativity or originality anymore. And without Royal to spice things up no reason to listen. I keep trying but can’t hang long without my mind wandering lol.

When you see Democrats say the econmony is trending in the right direction you realize how completely out of touch these liberals are with reality. You guys need a lesson on economics.
I see Woodstock Mike (like many of the other cons on here) long for the good ol’ days of W. You know, when the economy was contracting at a rate of -8.9% and we were shedding 750,000 jobs a month.

I was home sick a couple of days earlier this year, and he was apparently filling in for Neal Boortz (our clock radio is set to WSB). Geebus cripes, what an incredibly boring man. He put me to sleep quicker than Nyquil.

What difference does any of this make in Georgia????????
The GOP is going to select electors who will vote for Romney and there is nothing any voter does that will make a difference. We are as red a state as you can get.The campaign is irrelevant for the presidency in this state. Until the electoral college is abolished and the popular vote determines the presidential election, we do not have a true democracy. Picking electors was left up to the state legislatures in the Constitution back when states had more power.
The same for picking Senators – it was left to the states legislatures or governors to pick Senators . Then we got a constitutional amendment for popular voting of Senators. Maybe we should abolish that amendment – no special interests holding dollars over the Senators heads- just beholden to the state government. Can’t be any worse than what we got now

I still listen to Boortz at times, but you are right.
He always had that “edge” about him, but now it is just vitriol almost the entire time. Doesn’t seem to have that humor he once had.
And ratings will sink with Cain. He might be a great business and ladies man, but a talk show host?
He was boring when he had Ericson’s spot, now they are going to put him on in the morning.

Eric Erickson? I listened to part of his show once or twice. He was talking about the city of Atlanta’s population and he was swearing up and down it had to be like 5 million. Idiot. The metro population is near 5 million. The city of Atlanta itself is only something like 400k. i wanted to reach through the radio and smack the fool that he couldn’t figure out the distinction.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++
I think that would be a GOOD thing actually GT. The Republican party has really lost it’s way and has lost touch with all but a few radical right wingers. There isn’t a very good “check and balance” on the left wing. As I keep saying, it scares me when the Democrats are the saner of the two parties lol.
We actually NEED both parties for sanity and balance. Given their way the Republicans would have us in some sort of fascist theocratic state while given THEIR way the Democrats would have us all in some warped Karl Marx Utopian view of a egalitarian slave state with “free thought” limited to what they want you to think (that last applies to the Republicans too).
What a long strange trip it’s been. I need to burn one or two of them things TBS was talking about lol, excepting I’m too old for that stuff any more.

I’m dogging the dude out, but must give him a little credit. Just a few years ago, he was a lawyer in Macon.
He started redstate.com and is moving on up. Syndicated talk show, commentary on CNN and a popular website, especially for the politicos into the legislative details and nuances.

Those in need of such therapy that are currently on Medicare and Medicaid should most definitely write to Ann and ask for her secrets to getting those stable hand expenses covered. I hear they can work wonders too.

The only con I listen to on the radio from time to time is probably Limbaugh and he doesn’t come on till 1 in the afternoon. Beck I don’t think is even on the radio and he’s boring anyway. Now I will listen to Boortz on occasion as its priceless when a liberal calls in and Boortz just skewers him and makes him realize just how dumb he sounds. I get in an hour or 2 of Limbaugh a week maybe but haven’t heard any Boortz in a month or 2. But I think the real reason I don’t listen to much con radio is all the commercials. Wayyy to many relative to just regular music channels so why listen.

TBG, was it not you who posted a couple of links the other day that demonstrated that this equestrian therapy really is a for-real thing?
And did you not also post a link that showed that the Romneys only stood to be able to write off a few bucks for their horse-related expenses?
Might be time to post those links again.
FWIW, lefty friends, I think the Romney horse angle has little to no value and is mean-spirited to boot. Perhaps TBG will oblige us with the same links he posted earlier this week.

What I hate is the weak radio station carrying Georgia Tech sports. You get pass 14th street and it starts going on you. When did radio get so cheap you can’t pick up a traditional game of football but can hear these Hitler type rants all over the state. They make money they must be right. I am totally surprise someone hasn’t figure out how to show public executions. WSB would be right there with a play by play, maybe Boortz’s humor might come back enough to be the color man.
