What Gingrich, Santorum, etc. got right about Romney

Back in the heat of the primary season, Republican leaders grew very uneasy when Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry began to attack Mitt Romney as an out-of-touch rich guy who built his wealth through “vulture capitalism” (Rick Perry’s term) and was hiding something in his taxes. Among other concerns, GOP leaders recognized that if such attacks on Romney worked, they might end up with Gingrich, Santorum or Perry as their nominee.

That was not an outcome they were willing to risk, so they quickly ruled that line of attack out of bounds.

These days, however, they may be reaping the consequences of that decision. The latest CNN poll has Barack Obama pulling out to a seven-point lead over Romney. Ipsos/Reuters also puts the margin at seven, while Fox News puts it at nine. And as Fox notes, the internals are more worrisome still for Romney:

“Obama’s advantage comes largely from increased support among independents, who now pick him over Romney by 11 percentage points. Some 30 percent of independents are undecided. Last month, Obama had a four-point edge among independents, while Romney had the advantage from April through early June….

“The Obama campaign has spent heavily on advertising attacking Romney’s time at Bain Capital and his tax returns. And it appears to be working. Romney’s favorable rating dropped six percentage points since last month and now sits at 46 percent, down from 52 percent in mid-July. At the same time his unfavorable rating went up five points. Romney’s favorable rating has held steady among his party faithful, but it’s down eight percentage points among independents and seven points among Democrats.”

Moreover, Fox notes, Obama outpolls Romney by eight percentage points on the question of which man is more likely to help people achieve the American dream, which constitutes the foundation of the Romney strategy. And the erosion of support isn’t limited to the party’s nominees:

“While Democrats typically hold a slight edge over Republicans nationally in party identification, this attitude shifts based on events and changing sentiment. These days, voters seem to be even more likely to consider themselves Democrats than Republicans. There has been a five-percentage-point Democratic advantage, on average, in Fox News polls this year. In this poll, the Democratic edge is nine points. That may or may not be on the high side, although it is similar to other recent national polls conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, which put Democrats up 11 percentage points, and the Pew Research Center, with Democrats up by 13 percent.”

(In a humorous aside, only one major polling outfit in the last three weeks — the ever-reliable Rasmussen — has Romney leading, with the former Massachusetts governor up by four. See below.)

realclear

Source: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/general_election_romney_vs_obama-1171.html

It’s still early, of course — the campaign holds a lot of unanticipated twists and turns ahead. But for the moment, the line of attack against Romney that Republican leaders ruled off-limits in the GOP primary seems to be working quite well when employed by Democrats. The party’s decision to protect Romney back in January and February — in effect, Gingrich et al were told not to look the dressage horse in the mouth — meant that he was never forced to develop an explanation or defense against such criticism, and it appears that he has yet to do so to this day.

With voters now forming their early impressions of the GOP nominee, that could prove to have been a major blunder.

Paul,

I do not bring up the dressage in an attempt to demean the person or to belittle one with the disease. In fact, I merely bring it up in the context of the tax deduction that may be claimed by one with sufficient means and try to associate it with the portion of Mitt’s tax plan whereby he wishes to give those of his stature yet another tax cut while not increasing taxes on those of lesser value and also maintaining revenue neutrality. Surely, he has discussed the prospect of losing that medical expense writeoff with his better half and been thoroughly rebuked for daring to even consider its elimination. So, what are his other options. Cut the tax writeoff for tithes? I think not…

Romney can’t close the deal; just wait for the great debates, obama will pull ahead and have the wind at his back. I just hope his coat tails throw the house back to the dems. The economy is trending in the right direction, there is not much we can do about european woes and their austerity remedy. Romney has not made a compelling case for change, especially to elect him…

the line of attack against Romney that Republican leaders ruled off-limits in the GOP primary seems to be working quite well when employed by Democrats

Jay I think you’re missing the point here a bit. You understand that the real reason Republican party bigs got the Gingrich/Perry “vulture capital” line of attack shut down had nothing to do with sparing the Romney candidacy of criticism don’t you? Recall that at the time Occupy was still very fresh on the minds of people and causing no small amount of fear in the ruling class, of BOTH parties – recall the directives that went out by operatives like Douglas Schoen, for ex. So it was not so much Republican leaders shutting down the “vulture capitalism” line as it was the ruling class per se acting through its GOP wing and on behalf of its Wall St. masters that could not under any circumstances allow a line of attack to get out of hand in a campaign that could risk triggering a wider movement among the population, which could have been a real danger if it had been allowed to become a defining theme WITHIN a REPUBLICAN primary, of all things. That simply could not be tolerated. That’s why you had GOP pooh-bahs behind the scene working to get that stamped out pron-TO, and on the Dem side the usual DLC hit men doing their part. It was about CLASS, not a single candidate.

Not long ago, someone posted a link to a U.S. map, with each state identified by how it’s predicted to vote. The electoral votes were 267 for Obama, 191 for Romney, with 80 still uncertain. Consider this scenario: Romney wins the nationwide popular vote (questionable, but plausible), and Obama wins California (virtually certain). Under legislation passed and signed about a year ago, California’s 55 electoral votes will go to Romney, despite the majority of Californians voting for Obama. That would change the above totals to 212 for Obama and 246 for Romney. Conventional wisdom says that Romney has to win all the swing states to win the election; I’m not so sure.

I wouldn’t count Romney out just yet. The tax returns his time creating business (that employs highly paid individuals) are temporary distractions. The Obama campaign is firing all their bullets early. and certainly. some of the state-by-state polls of likely voters currently favor Obama. However, their are, with equal certainty, several strategic vectors of attack that Romney will pursue after the Tampa convention. Then we’ll see how the state polls and the Independent voters turn.

Good points. From what I’ve been able to glean from his very generalized tax proposal, that kind of deduction, or a further increase in the ceiling on medical deductions, could very well be on the chopping block.

I trust you see my point, also – that for an awful lot of people, it wasn’t about what therapy works and what wasn’t, it was more along the lines of “they’re trying to justify THAT s a tax deduction? You gotta be kidding me” when it was already a permitted deduction.

“This month’s numbers continue to bear out that longstanding pattern that minorities have a much more challenging time getting jobs,” said Bill Rodgers, chief economist with the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University.

Black unemployment has been roughly double that of whites since the government started tracking the figures in 1972.

Economy might be gaining traction, new data suggest

By Zachary A. Goldfarb and Michael A. Fletcher, Published: August 9

After a spring and summer of weak economic indicators, a flurry of fresh data suggest key sectors of the economy might be gaining traction, just as the battle for the White House enters the final round.

The long-moribund housing market has bustled to life, with prices and new-home construction rising in recent weeks. Hiring, so weak earlier this year, picked up last month. And on Thursday, the government reported an acceleration of a downward trend in the number of people seeking unemployment insurance, as well as a sharp improvement in U.S. exports.

Together, the signs point to an improving economy, a potentially important shift for President Obama’s re-election campaign.

“The better the economy between now and November, the better it is for Democrats and Obama,” said Ray C. Fair, a Yale University professor who studies the relationship between economics and electoral outcomes.

I believe GDP was in negative territory the last time we had a Repub in the white house.

Negative territory would be an understatement. Republicans pushed the economy off the cliff and while it was plummeting to earth, in typical who farted in the crowded room style, they all looked around at each other with that blank, “Who! ME!” expression on their faces while waiting for a Democrat to enter the room so they would all have someone to point at and proclaim, “You Lie!” as soon as he tried to deny total responsibility. Yep. That’s the true Republican style. They’ll poop in their pants and then try to claim that someone came while they slept and slipped it in there.

Steve @10:30Erwin – debunked? Really, by whom? Old white men? The data is clear and on the Internets…women are not being paid the same as men. They are paid less. Clearly. Honestly. Yes. Read something. Learn something.

let me find a link and maybe you’ll learn something instead of parroting bumper stickers…stay tuned

You know Romney is in trouble when he and the GOP have trot out gasbag Newt this week to tell some lies about Obama and welfare and food stamps to shore up the white bigots vote.Next we’ll be back to Trump and birther conspiracies. And maybe even Sarah with some of her vast knowledge of economics.

What other legal deductions do you think Americans shouldn’t take?

Home mortgage interest?

Medical?

Over 65?

Exemptions for kids?

What this is really about is reflected in the Daily Kos article so similar to your post: “”I don’t think Americans should be subsidizing this…” But it’s not about the tax law – it’s all about the people who avail themselves of legal deductions.

There have already been posts this morning detailing how the IRA could get to that level. Legally. But again, it’s not about being legal, is it? It’s about condemning a person for following laws one doesn’t like.

Perhaps you’d like to channel some of that ire into persuading the administration to submit a comprehensive tax-reform proposal? You know, like maybe even appointing a commission to recommend changes? They might even recommend eliminating such deductions and increasing rates on the very wealthy!

Pres Obama could appoint a number of people to it. Might even get Bowles and Simpson to head it up.

Oh wait… Obama did that? And the commission made recommendations just like that?

And Pres Obama didn’t do a thing with those recommendations?

My, my…..

Are you looking at states that Obama safely won in 08. States like PA. Obama only has a four point lead. Wisconsin, Obama only has a 3 point lead. Michigan, Obama only has a 6 point lead’ Iowa, North Carolina, Indiana. The swing states where Obama leads the polling is well within the margin of error. Have you considered the undecided vote where one poll indicated 62% Obama disapproval but as yet undecided on Romney. History shows that the undecided vote just before an election typically breaks for the challenger. I think you’re kidding yourself that this is a cake walk for Obama.

Why is Rasmussen the only poll that does not oversample democrats by 10%? I think we can agree that democrats will vote for Obama, and republicans will vote for Romney. The only real question is whether the dithering middle would prefer another four years of leftism, or whether they would prefer a president with some minimal competence in economics.

Oh the bither bs is coming back. Blogger on here brought up some foreign exchange student bs this week. He produced an assertion from a student at Harvard at the time. Even validated it with an interview clip on Fox.

It was comical indeed. More so that the blogger think he was producing facts than the assertion itself.

Do you think those people are violating the laws passed by Congress?

Or are you simply irritated they’re getting something you’re not?

Would you like to trade your good health for their condition and their monthly allowance?

From bls.gov,

From 1979 to 2004, women’s earnings as a percent of men’s increased by 18 percentage points,
from 62 to 80 percent.

That was the first thing I came across. Perhaps Erwin has something more recent.

Taxpayer got it right- that is the Karl Rove method of blaming someone else for stinking up the room after his candidate got caught laying one. Most of the Republicans truly believe Bill Clinton was responsible for the security lapses on 9-11. I assume Clinton advised Bush and Condi to tell those daily briefers to shove it when they reported an imminent attack. Maybe even old Bill told Bush to read ” My pet goat” while the country was being attacked and put madman Cheney in charge. And now Romney is relying on the same clowns to formulate his foreign policy views.
