One controversial ad by an Obama SuperPAC encapsulates so much that makes the 2012 presidential campaign distinctive:
– In its specifics, the ad is deceptive and brutally unfair. It suggests that by closing a Missouri steel plant and stripping its workers of health insurance, Mitt Romney and Bain Capital were in part responsible for the subsequent death of a worker’s wife by cancer. It’s the kind of gut-wrenching charge that — if made at all — at least ought to be strongly backed by facts. Instead, the implication that Romney is to blame is barely plausible at best, given the timelines involved. Those who condemn the ad as irresponsible are correct in that assessment.
– However, in a Citizens United world, in which quasi-independent groups raise and spend vast amounts of campaign cash, this type of ad will become more and more familiar. Candidates can claim to have no knowledge of or control over such advertisements, and thus no responsibility for it. The rich donors who paid for the ad are often anonymous, meaning they too cannot be held responsible. And if no one is responsible, irresponsibility results. This is not rocket science, even if the geniuses on the Supreme Court are unable to grasp it.
– Accuracy aside, the underlying theme of the ad is powerful and emotionally resonant. Outside predators such as Mitt Romney and Bain Capital can perform a useful function in a capitalist economy. They come into a company and make ruthless, heartless decisions without regard to the human cost, decisions that those with a longer history or commitment to the company perhaps cannot bring themselves to make. Over the long haul, in a macro-economic sense, that can be useful. But one of the primary questions of the 2012 race is whether the American people will be comfortable putting a person with that mentality and background in the Oval Office.
– Appearing on Fox News Wednesday, Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul denounced the ad in question as deceptive and unfair. However, she also noted that if the steelworkers in question had been working in Massachusetts instead of Missouri, their health coverage would have been protected by the health-insurance program created by Romney, a program that later served as the direct model for ObamaCare:
“To that point, you know, if people had been in Massachusetts under Governor Romney’s health care plan, they would have had health care,” Saul said. “There are a lot of people losing their jobs and their health care in President Obama’s economy.”
While Saul’s observation was valid, it caused a huge outrage among conservatives, with many calling for Saul’s firing for the outrageous act of actually telling the truth. Es ist verboten on the right to acknowledge even the existence of RomneyCare during this campaign, let alone that it actually might serve a useful function.
That brings us back once again to the central question of the 2012 campaign: If we are to live in an Bain-type economy in which brutish efficiency is the primary goal and the human impact is not to be considered in decision-making, what steps if any should government take to protect individual Americans from the worst vagaries of that process?
In an era of increasingly no-holds-barred capitalism, do we also slash unemployment insurance, job training, Medicaid benefits, Social Security and ObamaCare, so that individuals are even more fully exposed to the cruel caprices of free enterprise? Or do such programs become even more important in an era in which jobs, companies and indeed entire industries can disappear quickly?

“Investers made tons of money. Those gains ended up creating capital that could then be used to make other investments which helped the economy grow further in the aggregate. Additional new jobs were then created in the aggregate in these other areas. Again, the economy and job creation was firing on all cylinders during the time Romney was running Bain. It’s beyond silly to believe that Bain during the time Romney ran it caused more jobs in the aggregate to be lost than created or saved.”
Cons understand that. Its pretty self evident that if enormous amounts of wealth and economic activity were created than obviously Romney and Bain created far more jobs than they lost. You have to be a complete moron to not understand that. But Mark in midtown do you realize you are trying to talk common sense to libs???

He speaks of SuperPac’s for Obama being “unfair to Mitt”; however the SuperPac’s for Mitt are trying to start their own little race war in order to get their candidate hired.
So, what’s worse? Yeah, I know it’s more of “He did it too!!”; but there has to be a sense of proportion to this thing. You can say that tadpole is “big” and it’s a problem. Or you can look at that 20 ft. gator and see what a “big” problem really is.

Priorities’ ad, released Tuesday but yet to actually air in a paid commercial time slot, ties Mitt Romney to the death of a former GST Steel worker’s wife
It’s something I’ve been saying for awhile now about the Citizens United decision and I’ll say it again–what’s most insidious about shadowy superPACs wielding this kind of money and power, is not so much what they spend their money on, but what they can credibly THREATEN to spend their money on.
I guarantee that this is being played out in scores of podunk districts, where some slick representative of a Koch- or suchlike-funded outfit is telling some underpaid representative that it’d really be in his interest to play ball on this bill. Or else.

“Creative destruction does enhance productivity and for an economy to thrive as our does, there are a lot of people who will suffer as a result of that.” – Mitt Romney, Emory University, April 2010.
Mitt Romney’s corporate raider tactics included buying up companies. selling off valuable assets, loading them down with debt, selling shares to gullible investors and then dumping his own shares of stock while leaving the new investors holding the bag while the shell of the company that once existed was left to wither in bankruptcy with the PBGC picking up any pension obligations that may have survived the process.

Jay: In an era of increasingly no-holds-barred capitalism, do we also slash unemployment insurance, job training, Medicaid benefits, Social Security and ObamaCare, so that individuals are even more fully exposed to the cruel caprices of free enterprise?
If you are of the belief that the stockholder is GOD then the answer is “Yes”. Companies are driven by profit — if we run the country like a business, as some republicans want, then the US’s main goal would be to make a profit.
First thing we’d need to do is liquidate holdings into cash to pay down the national debt.
We’d go after things like our National Parks first, sell them to the highest bidder; let’s say China. There are a lot of geological treasures in our National parks so China would now own the land that may have oil running through it.
In looking at China’s business acumen and the way they’ve previously destroyed their own country’s atmosphere, water and sickened their own countryment – expect pollution and sickness to go up.
Next we’d probably sell some all of oil on our coastlines to big oil companies. This would bring in immediate cash.
Next, being a business, we’d take all of our infrastructure off shore because workers offshore will work much cheaper than american workers — they’ll work for pennies a day and be happy with it.
We’d offshore our Defense Department, NASA, USMail, basically anything that the government owns / regulates to the highest bidder. We’d probably get a super power like Russia or even Saudia Arabia, who has losts of ready cash, to go for it.
Now U.S.A. INc.; is out of debt and solvent. Just like a good business should be.

Does anyone here think that it’s a bad thing if people lose jobs because of corporate restructuring, industries moving overseas, whatever the reason – that it’s a bad thing that laid-off workers still have health care coverage?
Or do people who think that’s a bad idea think it better that the laid-off workers use emergency room services so people with jobs can pay for their care?
Or do they think it’s okay to gamble that no life-threatening diseases would occur that would result in death?

Calling Romney heartless, are you Jay? Well, from my perspective YOU are heartless, in terms of the programs you advocate stripping moral fiber from the fabric of our nation and citizens.
It’s harsh on either count to call someone “heartless”. Artificially sustaining institutions and employment which is economically unsustainable on its own merits has an impact on the broad population providing the economic sustenance. Providing social welfare benefits can have a detrimental impact on social and moral fabric (and liberty), heck, even mainstream Democrats and the Clintons have acknowledged that. Corporate “raiders” (if you prefer) and social welfare programs have a place in our life. Taken to an extreme each is dangerous.
The facts underlying the ad do not indicate ANYONE was “heartless”. Implying they were (and you do) is “heartless” at face value.

Who remembers the state of the nations in 2000, then in 2008. Short memories for the GOP, as they trashed the country and amazingly think somehow it would be different next time. Wake up, you look foolish.

Interesting I was thinking this very question this morning about the heart and soul of the USA. Many of those on the right claim the USA is a Christian country. Well, then, if this is a Christian country the heartlessness of business goes against that completely. Even the Bible which many Christians…many of the same who will vote for Romney….claim is what we should be ruled by says in 2 Cor 8:13 to 8:15 says
Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality.14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality,
15 as it is written: “He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little.”
It saddens that many who think we are a Christian country founded on Christian principles according to the unerrant Word of God don’t have a freakin’ clue what the Book really says.

and having said what I just said…I think the SuperPACs are the worst of politics and SCOTUS did our process no favors and made it uglier. This is on their heads. Both sides are wrong.

If people understood how Romney profited on the misery of others there’d be crowds with torches and pitchforks outside his house. – Wouldn’t that be against the law?
He gutted companies, paid himself off with borrowed money to the point that the companies he bought were forced to declare bankruptcy and then stuck US with the company’s pension obligations. – Do you have a list of companies he (Romney) did this to from an UNBIASED source?
And he did this more than once. – Do you have a list of companies he (Romney) did this to from an UNBIASED source?
A genuinely horrifying man. – Were there ANY companies that Bain purchased the were on the verge of going out of business that were saved and are still operating today. Do the employees and their families that would have lost their jobs and benefits had Bain NOT stepped in and turn the business around not count?

When is Mitt going to share his secrets on how he will create 250,000 jobs per month for 48 straight months. Is there no limit to the tall tales Mitt is willing to dump on his conned constituency.

“what steps if any should government take to protect individual Americans from the worst vagaries of that process?”
Jay, if Mitt manages to get himself elected in November, you can pretty much bet that the gov’t will take NO steps to protect individual Americans — Mitt has made it clear that the “business experience” that he brings to the table is all about making profit$ for himself and his corporate buddies and nothing more than that… he’s not even campaigning based on the good policies he supported for the people of Massachusetts just 10 years ago. Why should anyone believe that he will do anything to “promote the general welfare” of the American people — the general welfare he and the Repubs believe in is for corporations only!
Obama/Biden 2012 — it’s the only way the American people will be protected from corporate greed!
