Not that this will change any minds — actual data having been stripped of pertinence in modern political debate — but …
“The average temperature for the contiguous U.S. during July was 77.6°F, 3.3°F above the 20th century average, marking the hottest July and the hottest month on record for the nation. The previous warmest July for the nation was July 1936 when the average U.S. temperature was 77.4°F. The warm July temperatures contributed to a record-warm first seven months of the year and the warmest 12-month period the nation has experienced since recordkeeping began in 1895….
The January-July period was the warmest first seven months of any year on record for the contiguous United States. The national temperature of 56.4°F was 4.3°F above the long-term average. Most of the contiguous U.S. was record and near-record warm for the seven-month period, except the Pacific Northwest, which was near average….”
The U.S. Climate Extremes Index (USCEI), an index that tracks the highest and lowest 10 percent of extremes in temperature, precipitation, drought and tropical cyclones across the contiguous U.S., was a record-large 46 percent during the January-July period, over twice the average value, and surpassing the previous record large CEI of 42 percent which occurred in 1934. Extremes in warm daytime temperatures (83 percent) and warm nighttime temperatures (74 percent) both covered record large areas of the nation, contributing to the record high year-to-date USCEI value.”
Again, I have no illusion that such data will have any effect, largely because accepting the reality of man-driven climate change means accepting a self-imposed banishment from the conservative tribe. But I think it’s important to post it anyway, for the historical record if nothing else.

It sure feels a lot hotter in Atlanta to me then it did years ago. I can believe it.

Hi Jay–What are the chances we are already BEYOND the “tipping point” of being able to slow down or reverse the effects of man made climate change?
Not that we shouldn’t try, but from what I have heard, things move faster and faster once the tipping point is reached. Arctic ice gone, warmer oceans, melting permafrost releasing huge amount of CO2, etc. It gets worse exponentially…
Personally, I think our goose is already cooked.

Jay,
Wasn’t the winter 3 years ago the coldest for North America in 50 years, an area larger than the continguous United States? I seem to recollect that when man-made global warming skeptics were pointing to that as evidence against global warming, that man-made global warming proponents countered that North America was just a part of the planet and that the rest of the planet wasn’t experiencing the coldest winter in 50 years. Yet now when the continguous United States shows record heat, it’s ok to extrapolate from that and use it as evidnce of man-made global warming? Interesting double standard, but not exactly a surprise.

“Winters have generally been warming faster than other seasons in the United States. However, recent research indicates that climate change is disrupting the Arctic and ice around the North Pole in a particularly interesting way. In the Arctic, frigid air is typically trapped in a tight loop known as the polar vortex. This super-chilled air is not only cold, it also tends to have low barometric pressure compared to the air outside the vortex. The surrounding high-pressure zones push in on the vortex from all sides so the cold air is essentially “fenced in” above the Arctic, where it belongs.
As the Arctic region warms faster than most other places, however, the Arctic sea ice melts more rapidly and for longer periods each year, and is unable to replenish itself in the briefer, warmer winter season. This can destabilize the polar vortex and raises the barometric pressure within it.
For two winter seasons now (2009/2010 and 2010/2011), the polar vortex has been notably unstable. In addition, another measurement of barometric pressure—the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)—has been in negative mode, weakening part of the barometric pressure “fence” around the polar vortex. This instability allows the cold Artic air to break free and flow southward, where it collides with warmer, moisture-laden air. This collision can produce severe winter weather.
The winter of 2009/2010 recorded the second lowest negative phase of the NAO since the 1970s, which helps to explain the record snowfalls across the northeastern United States. The 2010/2011 winter is also trending toward a strong negative phase.”
It’s an interconnected system with many variables in play. It’s not a simple, one variable system.

“Dispute” is a loaded term here. There are a lot of scientists who ‘dispute’ the findings of climatologists, but in the vast majority of cases, those doing the disputing are not themselves climatologists.

Beth,
Both sides are running distorted ads but do you have an opinion on this issue?

“July also had one of the largest (#11) solar events in recent history.
#1-10 occurred in the last year (The same “Warmest Year on Record”)”
Point 1- Any fact that doesn’t agree with the Lib nonsense does not matter.
“Wasn’t the winter 3 years ago the coldest for North America in 50 years, an area larger than the continguous United States?”
Point 2- Never mind the man behind the curtain. Facts don’t matter to the libs.
Didn’t Europe just have one of its coldest winters on record with several towns in Eastern Europe recording alltime record lows.
Point 3- Again. Facts do not matter to the lib agenda. Once they get an idea in those little noggins the kooks aint gonna let go of it.

But there is a reason that Jay only wants to talk about the weather.
Can you blame him?
We could talk about the poll numbers which show Obama pretty much stomping Romney
Would that do ?

You know what they say about what’s the evidence of a weak mind trying to express itself.

Are you on record? Really? On record? Isn’t that special.
Well not the way your caregivers think you’re special, but I appreciate the kind words.
Why not the simply contribute you money now to President Trillions?
Better men than me have tried to reason with you on your faux- naivete, so I guess I shouldn’t bother beyond saying such arguments are cop-outs and deflections from the topic at hand.

Its not global warming dummy. Its climate change which causes wild swings in the weather.
Im not sure you even know what we are talking about. Either way talking to you is like talking to a 5 year old.
Ill leave it to others.

Speaking of wind energy, I do recall Mitt sticking his foot down his throat with regard to Sen Grassley’s call for tax credits for such things.

Peadawg: I think it’s a stretch to say definitively that either statement is intentionally misleading. Why is it so hard to think that people just didn’t meticulously and carefully plan out the exact words to use to satisfy semantics arguers? I think that’s more common than you think, and a much more likely explanation for the terms used that people like to quibble over instead of addressing the actual problem.
