Sifting through the details of another mass shooting

Six members of a Sikh congregation in Oak Creek, Wisconsin were murdered at their local temple Sunday morning by a man whom Fox News has identified as Wade Michael Page, “a heavily tattooed, 40-year-old ex-Army soldier.”

The suspect was killed by police responding to the scene.

The mass attack comes barely two weeks after the tragic movie-theater shooting in Auroro, Colo. that killed 12. However, the tragedy in the Wisconsin case is compounded by the fact that its victims were gathering in a place of peaceful worship, and were apparently targeted because of their faith. For that reason, it is being investigated as a case of domestic terrorism, which is appropriate. (There is a strong possibility that the shooter incorrectly associated the Sikhs with Muslims.)

Hate crimes that target groups have a much longer list of victims than do acts of blind, random violence such as that in Aurora. They are intended to inflict fear on all members of that particular group, to make them feel isolated and hated, and to a tragic degree they often succeed in doing so. Across this country, members of the Sikh community today feel vulnerable, suspect and afraid, just as the shooter probably intended.

In another difference from the Aurora shooting, authorities have reported that the gunman in the Wisconsin attack was armed only with a single 9mm pistol, making it difficult and indeed inappropriate to turn the event into a forum for gun-control debate. No conceivable change in gun laws or enforcement could have prevented or minimized this tragedy.

However, the Wisconsin shooting should serve as a caution to those in public life who stoop to targeting religious or ethnic groups in their irresponsible rhetoric, and who by doing so validate the anger, fear and resentment that apparently motivated this tragedy. We are, or ought to strive to be, a better nation than that.

Exactly!! Things like this makes me wonder about the future of our country. I know incidents like this have happened throughout our history. This country was forged in violence by revolution, has been changed by violence, and will likely perish in violence. The thing that bothers me the most is the 24 hour news and the effect it has on kids. I know there’s a need to report the news, but what impression do you give kids when all they hear about is shootings, deaths, and murders?

Glad you are back Jay. Sad state of affairs regarding shootings….wonder if we can read into the frequency of these and draw any conclusions…should we prepare to see more of the same? These two can’t possibly be the only wingnuts with guns who carry some sort of twisted hatred…what about all those “militia” dopes who think they will have to fight the government?

Perhaps, but I think that somehow we must put common sense back into the heads of the NRA bosses.
Last week the NRA sent me a renewal for membership. I haven’t been a member for years and couldn’t figure why they would send me one now. Maybe their craziness is losing them membership, I don’t know. But…I did send it back, nor with a check, but with a note asking them to remove my name from their mailing list. I told them:

2 August, 2012

Mr. LaPierre,

While I am and will remain an unapologetic supporter of the Second Amendment, I cannot, in good conscience, continue to support the NRA. I feel that your stance on assault weapons, extended magazines and such is beyond common sense. This I cannot
Accept.

I am 65 years old and I remember fondly the NRA of my youth. I want that NRA back, not this radical one that we have today. So…until you support common sense gun control, not to ban gun ownership, but to promote laws that are designed to protect both the common citizen and gun owner, please remove me from your mailing list. And do not contact me again.

Typical liberal conclusion. As if millions across the country going to see the Batman film (or other movies) were not “fearful” of a repeat event. (Many probably didn’t go to the theatre based on such fear.) Yet nobody referred to the tragedy in Aurora as a “hate-crime.” (Rightfully so.)

Neither is it necessary to label the evil acts (especially with extra legal consequences) on 9-11 or the Ft. Hood shooter as “hate-crimes” in order for justice to be served.

It’s a little early to jump to conclusions about the motivation of the shooter.

Since the topic of hate crimes has been raised, here what we know from FBI statistics as of 2010:

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/hate-crime/2010/narratives/hate-crime-2010-victims

In the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, the victim of a hate crime may be an individual, a business, an institution, or society as a whole. In 2010, the Nation’s law enforcement agencies reported that there were 8,208 victims of hate crimes. Of these victims, 9 were victimized in 4 separate multiple-bias incidents.

By bias motivation

An analysis of data for victims of single-bias hate crime incidents showed that:

48.2 percent were victims of an offender’s bias against a race.
18.9 percent were victims of an offender’s bias against a religion.
18.6 percent were victims of an offender’s bias against a particular sexual orientation.
13.7 percent were victims of an offender’s bias against an ethnicity/national origin.
0.6 percent were victims of an offender’s bias against a disability.

Religious bias

Of the 1,552 victims of an anti-religion hate crime:

67.0 percent were victims of an offender’s anti-Jewish bias.
12.7 percent were victims of an anti-Islamic bias.
4.2 percent were victims of an anti-Catholic bias.
3.0 percent were victims of an anti-Protestant bias.
0.5 percent were victims of an anti-Atheist/Agnostic bias.
9.1 percent were victims of a bias against other religions (anti-other religion).
3.5 percent were victims of a bias against groups of individuals of varying religions (anti-multiple religions, group).

To put these numbers in context, the FBI’s “Crime in the US, 2010″ shows that there were more than 10 million crimes committed in the US as of 2010. More than 1.2 million of that total were violent crimes.

Let’s let law enforcement do their jobs before we jump to conclusions.

In the meantime, let’s offer our condolences to the victims of this senseless crime.

How many of you can claim to have performed a sex act on the mother

“What else was it other than gay couples performing a sex act in front of people that were gathered in a peaceful restaurant who were targeted because of their faith?”

Chick-Fil-A was NOT targeted because of their faith. They were targeted because they used their RELIGION to publicly place religious judgement on a group of fellow citizens… and their money to support legislation against those citizens. We enjoy free speech in this country…but then the other guy has a right to respond to that speech. It’s America, after all.

People that have been in combat need to undergo regular and routine psych evaluations and the results need to be studied and acted upon in a timely fashion. Further, regardless of one’s concerns over gun control laws, people with questionable mental stability should not be given easy access to guns. It will not stop every incident but it may help save a few more innocent lives.
