Time to put on those travelin’ shoes and go a-fishin’

The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.

That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”

Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

Why, Redneck, what a surprise to see you here. I hope you and the Missus had a wonderful lunch at Ryan’s today! I shore hope the Missus ain’t hungry after eatin’ all that!

Well, the missus was a bit off her feed today, Sooth. She only made two trips to the salad bar and three to the main buffet. And she couldn’t hardly finish the slice of pecan pie and the banana pudding she got for dessert. I hope she ain’t coming down with something or maybe going on one of those diets that make her so cranky. I got enough problems without her going on a rampage with that big iron skillet.

Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol on Sunday broke with fellow conservatives and backed restrictions the sales of “assault weapons” like the AR-15 that was allegedly used to kill at least 12 people and wound 58 others in Aurora, Colorado last week.

“People have a right to handguns and hunting rifles,” Kristol told Fox News host Chris Wallace. “I don’t think they have a right to semi-automatic, quasi-machine guns that can be used to shoot a hundred bullets at a time.”

I went trap shooting today (http://www.deshotelsarms.com ) . First time I’ve shot a shotgun in probably 20 years. I hit like 7 the first 25 and then 19 the second. “I don’t think they have a right to semi-automatic, quasi-machine guns that can be used to shoot a hundred bullets at a time.”

I don’t think people have a right to own an automobile that will travel over 70 mph. Many innocent Americans are killed every year by drivers exceeding the posted speed limit, frequently in excess of 70 mph. Nevertheless, many models of cars are sold that will exceed 100 mph. Some will go in excess of 150 right off the showroom floor. Why do we allow it? Could it have something to do with freedom?

I understand that there are many people (civilians) who value guns for hunting & for protection. What I do not understand is why any law abiding civilian would need or want the kind of heavy fire power carried by the Aurora shooter, nor do I understand why these same civilians are so against banning assault & multi-round weapons. From what little I know about guns, it seems to me that there is no animal that can’t be brought down by so-called conventional weapons. Yeah, I am probably going to get flack (no pun intended) for this post, but I am truly hoping for enlightenment here.

Well, G Mare, that squirrel might look small and helpless but they’re sneaky little devils—quick and fast. If you’re hunting them with a plain old weapon you don’t stand a chance. But if you got something that fires, say, 150 rounds a minute, then you can overwhelm them with firepower. And if you can’t hit them you might at least bring down the limb or tree they’re in. Besides, most of us don’t have time to reload.

I hope this explains everything to you. But if it don’t, then just remember that great American that even played Moses and was the Voice of God and what he said: “You’ll take my machine gun when you can pry it from my cold, dead hands.”

Doggone, I have to disagree. We don’t allow just anyone to own C4 or dynamite, we regulate certain large purchases of chemicals, we dont hand out nuclear bombs to citizens and just hope they will act lawfully. If there is a legitimate reason for someone to own megaclips and assualt rifles, then we should regulate it (licensing, insurance, background checks, requirements as to control and lock down of the weapons). I understand that some enjoy using these weapons, then fine, they can meet the regulations (or their gun clubs can and rent the guns for use there).
