Time to put on those travelin’ shoes and go a-fishin’

The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.

That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”

Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

Their very existence is to fight change to watch our country decline.

It must eat them up inside and make them angry.

scout — I’ve been attacked before. In my defense it was because I was too young to realize that I don’t have the same protections as a man has……I was walking alone at night to my car parked two blocks away.

Unfortunately for the attacker, I have a 4th degree black belt in TaeKwonDo; and I’m also into KickBoxing.

So of COURSE I’m going to protect myself or anyone else with me.

If my attacker had a gun, I would’ve had to “pick my spot” so to speak to when I could attack; but my trying to find a gun in my purse in order to thwart him, would’ve lost me valuable time and probably would’ve ended with us BOTH being injured. ONce I pulled a gun, he would’ve been obligated to use his — whether using his was his first priority or not.

I assume our leftist friends would like to reduce gun ownership as well as deport blacks and suicidal folks.

I’m confused. I thought leftists wanted to bring more illegal people here. Why would they want to deport Blacks and suicidal folks? I thought they were against deportation?

Besides, you can’t deport a natural born US citizen and a few select other residents under any circumstances. That’s Basic Immigration Law 101.

Governments that do not adapt to change will decline.

But especially the pro-war corporate scumbags that run this country. A giant conflagration is probably what they most deserve.

Our decline is exaggerated somewhat.

That reads as though you’re conflicted on whether we’re on a decline or not. First, you say we are not declining. Then you’re saying it’s somewhat exaggerated.

The easiest way to explain things is to use a canal and lock system. When things work right, you use the locks to raise and lower boats to different heights of a canal. If you remove the locks, the water flows from the highest point to the lowest point until the level equalizes.

The US has been the high point for economies. With the removal of free trade locks, economies are going to continue to equalize, rising for the low and lowering for the high. When you’re at or near the top, the only way you can move is down.

I disagree, somewhat. I can see China becoming a leader — but they’re leading with slave wages for their employees and forced restrictioins (one child per family). Also they have no regulations regarding things like food and water. Recently they had tainted baby food that killed off hundreds, they didn’t even CHANGE their rules regarding how the food is processed.

As for India — were you serious when you mentioned them? My aunt is a member of “Doctors Without Borders” and she goes to INdia a lot. She said that, if we’re not careful, India and Africa will be what the “ruling class” turns America into. India is no better than a 3rd world country on steroids.

I think the first thing I would do to help reduce incidences such as the one in the movie theatre is to make sure that all emergency exits set off an alarm as long as they are open and to make sure that they cannot be opened from the outside when shut and to make sure that a security guard or management checks all doors whenever an alarm goes off, etc. Unfortunately, we can not afford to be lax with basic security. Also, I would ban any firearm with a high capacity clip (and certain other weapons too) and make the fine manadatory loss of all weapons forever for that person along with a hefty fine and jail time. Mitt Romney

1994: In his unsuccessful challenge to liberal Democratic senator Edward M Kennedy, Romney sounds moderate on guns, supporting an assault weapons ban and insisting, “I don’t line up with the NRA.”

2002: Running for governor of Massachusetts, Romney says he supports and will protect the state’s “tough gun laws”. The NRA gives his Democratic opponent a higher rating on gun-rights issues and makes no endorsement in the race.

2003: As governor, Romney upsets gun owners by signing a law that quadruples the state’s gun-licensing fee – from $25 to $100 – as part of a widespread effort to eliminate the budget deficit.

2004: Romney signs a Massachusetts ban on assault weapons. He mollifies many gun rights advocates by coupling it with looser rules on gun licenses and an extension of the duration of licenses, reducing the effect of the earlier fee increase.

2005: Declares May 7 Right to Bear Arms Day in Massachusetts.
2006: As he prepares for his first presidential run, Romney becomes a lifetime NRA member.

2007: While campaigning, Romney declares he sometimes hunts “small varmints” – a comment ridiculed by some as an awkward attempt to pander to pro-gun voters.

2008: In a Republican primary debate, Romney says he would have signed the federal assault weapons ban if it came to his desk as president, but he opposes any new gun legislation.

2011: Making his second presidential bid, Romney’s campaigns on a promise to protect and promote the second amendment.

2012: Romney tells gun owners that Obama wants to erode their rights. “We need a president who will enforce current laws, not create new ones that only serve to burden lawful gun owners,” Romney told the National Rifle Association’s annual convention. “President Obama has not. I will.”

July 20: Like Obama, Romney avoids talking politics on the day of the Aurora shooting. He says Americans are coming together in their sorrow: “There is something we can do. We can offer comfort to someone near us who is suffering or heavy laden, and we can mourn with those who mourn in Colorado.”

Clips don’t hold high capacity fire power. The next generation of magazine fed rounds hold 20 to 30 rounds of fire power and that’s been available for quite sometime. We also have had for sometime drum fed weapons with up to 100 rounds of fire power not to even get into belt fed ammunition. The statistics show us that mass murders of 5 or more are under 1% of recorded homicides and that stat has held for several decades. Clearly advanced weapon ammo capacity has not increased our homicidal death rate statistic. Sociopaths are still among our world population and have been since time began. Guns aren’t the problem particularly in an open society and that openness most in this country wouldn’t want to sacrifice for further restrictions on law abiding citizens.

I simply stated that your post was confusing. I think Doggone captured your point @ 5:16 much better than you have yet to state yourself.

Whether or not we’re in a decline all depends on your personal perspective. If you were employed in manufacturing for years and years and can’t find a job due to offshoring, outsourcing, and technological advances, you may think we’re in decline. If you’re suffering from the wage stagnation that’s happened over the past 30-40 years, you may think we’re in decline. If you have been unable to find employment since the collapse in 2008, you may think we’re in decline. However, if you’re in a field that’s growing or have a job that’s paying you more than you’ve earned in the past, things may be A-OK to you.

Barbara Elias-Sanborn has also cautioned that, “as much of the literature on drones suggests, such killings usually harden militants’ determination to fight, stalling any potential negotiations and settlement.”

Yes by all means let’s put abortion into the mix, but of course once they are out of the womb, no need to worry how many are killed every day by guns.

Don’t put any money on it, Sooth. I seen you play.

Oh yes they have been and still are today killed by abortion. You can cleanse your beliefs anyway you wish but abortion is MURDER.

“But I thought Obama was going to take out guns. NRA said this directly in 08 and has already mentioned it during this campaign

Truth or LIES?”

It was a lie in 08 and the lie they tell now to explain the lies and falsehoods from 08 is that Obama didn’t take your guns then so he and the UN can take them this year.

Disgusting, sad, and pathetic. It’s like that crazy guy who keeps predicting the end of the world will happen for sure on this particular date, then when it doesn’t happen he lies and makes another prediction for the end of the world, and his simple minded followers just keep believing…

I would believe that if you were all for health and educational programs for those lives you want to save. If you were for programs that would help the mother of that unwanted child to either set it up for adoption, or ensure that she would have the monetary help to provide for that child. And in case of a child born from rape or incest, provide the necessary mental therapy for the mother. You can’t say you want to “save” a fetus and not accept responsibility for that life.

Saving a fetus without assuming its health education and welfare is just putting another soul into the penal system.

Sorry, I guess though from the tone of your assumption that you assume I do nothing but my wife and I do contribute to such programs.

…and bottom line…if you really want to prevent abortion, then promote contraceptives and quit trying to legislate morality. Human being are going to have sex, it’s the way God made us and religion should stay the hell out of our bedrooms!
