The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.
That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”
Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

gee, why not mandate insurance for bricks in your yard or on your house in case someone picks it up and throws it thru a window or beats someone else to death with it
We already have that — it’s called Home Owner’s Insurance. Al those things mentioned, could be included in your policy.
BTW — this is just a brief outline of a very good idea that getalife mentioned. Is it feasible? Yes, of coure. Will it be a deterrent? Don’t know. Will it be a First Step to solving a problem? Definitely.

Answer to that is no, it will not. People who are obessessed aren’t detered by things that will deter a normal person. Deterence isn’t the point. It’s dealing with the aftermath that is the issue.

Looks like its pretty evident there is no concensus for changing the gun laws.
Or for increased attention to the mental health of college sturdents or other troubled men in their early twenties, which is the age of most of these shooters.
So we are left to live with it.

Let’s hope you never go through litigation –
OK let’s break down how a good litigator can make your life a living hell; and how something innocuous as a Home Owner’s Insurance Policy can save your life savings.
Hooligans grab a bunch of bricks out of your yard and then take those bricks and smash in a couple of windows around the neighborhood AND kill old lady Bruce’s dog.
The hooligans claim that they never would’ve done those awful things, but for the “temptation” of your bricks loosely laying around in your yard that is fenceless, (see beautiful nuisance laws — pools).
Now the homeowners and the old lady can file charges against the hooligans of course, but to recoup their losses, it’ll be more benefcial to make YOU pay.
Enter the experience litigator.
Lather, rinse, repeat.

Seeing that there is no major gun control initiatives in Congress even when the Democrats had control, you point is invalid. Might be valid and make sense to you, but on a macro level it holds zero weight and has no foundation or merit.
Republicans certainly aren’t going to advocate for more restrictive gun laws and Democrats didn’t change anything during the 4 yrs they had Congress.
So why would gun owners be looking to purchase insurance to combat something that is not even a reality?

According to a nationwide poll, nine out of ten Americans oppose laws allowing guns on college campuses, or in bars, restaurants, stadiums, hospitals, or government buildings.5 Despite near-universal agreement that public space should be gun-free, however, most states do not prohibit the possession of concealed weapons in a variety of public places. Often, state law is simply silent about whether a person with a concealed carry permit may bring a gun into a particular location; these gaps allow permit holders to bring guns into a variety of sensitive places by default. The adoption of “shall issue” or “no permit” systems over the past few decades makes these omissions exponentially more dangerous, since more people than ever may now carry concealed handguns.
In recent years, the gun lobby has mounted a nationwide campaign to undo existing location-based restrictions and explicitly allow the carrying of firearms in places where large numbers of people are likely to congregate. Some of these laws are particularly egregious. In Kansas, for example, permit holders may carry concealed, loaded handguns into bars and restaurants, where they may drink alcohol as long as they do not become so intoxicated that they are “incapable of safely operating” their weapons.6 In Utah, permit holders are allowed to carry concealed weapons in elementary schools.7 Individuals carrying concealed weapons may have the best of intentions, believing that carrying guns will protect themselves and the rest of us from some imagined, unforeseen danger. The reality, however, is that concealed handgun holders create new risks of intentional or accidental shootings.8 Members of the public who carry guns risk escalating everyday disagreements into public shootouts, especially in places where disputes frequently occur—in bars, at sporting events, or in traffic

Does the Second Amendment prevent effective gun regulations? What is the “right to bear arms”? Second Amendment litigation has become a critical battleground since the U.S. Supreme Court held, in District of Columbia v. Heller, that the Amendment guarantees an individual right to possess a firearm in the home for self-defense. This decision created a radical shift in the meaning of the Second Amendment, but it doesn’t prevent smart gun regulations. In fact, since Heller, courts nationwide have found a wide variety of firearms laws constitutional because they can help prevent gun deaths, injuries, and crimes in communities across the country.

IN OTHER WORDS, CONCEALED WEAPONS PERMIT HOLDERS (IN TEXAS) ARE CONVICTED OF A CRIME AT A RATE THAT IS A TINY FRACTION OF THAT OF THE GENERAL POPULATION’S.
“Assuming the search is for the “percentage of concealed weapons permit holders who commit crimes in any given year,” the only complete database is from Texas, which has a database showing the number of individuals who are convicted of a crime with the percentage of CCW permit holders who are convicted.(pdf)
That is, if there were 1,000 crime X’s during a year, and two of those convicted were CCW holders, the percentage is 0.0020. If you click on the link above, you will find that for most crimes the percentage is a whopping 0.0000%.
That does not mean that a Concealed Weapons Permit holder never commits a crime. For 3,680 persons convicted of “aggravated assault” during 2009, just 8 had a CCW. That is a whopping 0.0022 percent of those convicted of aggravated assault.
There were 1,913 robbery convictions, none by a CCW holder, for a 0.0000% rate.
And the overall rate for the 65,541 individuals who were convicted of some crime during 2009 was a whopping 0.1541 percent. Many of those were relatively minor “slips of the mind,” carrying a gun into a bottle shop, for example.
For Texas overall, just 0.002654 percent of the population was convicted of a crime during 2009. In more familiar terms, Texas had a conviction rate of 265.5 per 100,000 population. Concealed Weapons Permit holders had a conviction rate of 0.408 per 100,000 population.
In other words, Concealed Weapons Permit holders are convicted of a crime at a rate that is a tiny fraction of that of the general population’s.
Incomplete data from other states strongly suggest that Texas experience is either typical or a bit high. But Concealed Weapons Permit holders are an extremely peaceful lot.”

Based on the article you posted the jury is still out on that one.
However, this was stated at the end:
“Hilton adds one note. In 1995, he said, many worried out loud that offering concealed weapons permits would lead to a Wild West mentality and cause violent crime to go up.
“We were told that there was going to be blood in the streets, it was going to be the OK Corral,” Hilton said. That hasn’t come to pass either, he said.”
P.S. It’s really a separate issue. The right to protect oneself is separate from the crime rate whether it is high or low.
For the person actually being assaulted …………. the crime rate is HIGH !!!!

You have crap to back up the NRA’s lies. Was it a lie in 08 or are you spinning to talk about 2012?
Have they retracted their lies from 08? No they did not.
It was a scare tactic to rile the base and boost the price of guns. Didn’t get McCain elected, but prices did go up, at least for awhile until reality set in that the NRA was lying and there was no need to run and buy before it was made illegal

If everyone carries, why don’t we just get rid of things like cops, courts and due process.
With everyone carry we can all be judge, jury, executioners and crime scene analysts.
Keep Up the Good Fight!

Well I am off before Ftroop starts more absurd claims that a “lame duck” is dangerous and then encourages more lunatics to use their “2d amendment remedies” to stop tyranny. Sickening that they keep on using code words. Shameful really.

Even ideas the right came up with in the past like health insurance mandate are voted down to get our President.
This was another newt idea.
Get the President after a collapse is unacceptable . Period.
The gop must be held accountable by the people for their unpatriotic behavior.

Because being able to protect oneself is necessary when there are no cops, courts or judges handy.
I assume by your comments that you would never intervene to prevent your or someone else’s injury or death even on your own property or in your home/car.
Is that correct ?

Agree to disagree.
Disagree all you like. NRA stated numerous things that Obama was going to do.
Did it happen? Was it even close?
Answer in both cases is NO. They LIED. You bought it. Your right your ignorance. No offense, but are you buying it again. After all they are making the same “claims” as they did in 08.

“For Texas overall, just 0.002654 percent of the population was convicted of a crime during 2009. In more familiar terms, Texas had a conviction rate of 265.5 per 100,000 population. Concealed Weapons Permit holders had a conviction rate of 0.408 per 100,000 population.”
What this means is that as a “group”, gun permit holders are much, much more law abiding than the population in general.

What can you say? Cons are violence addicted.
It stems from their KKK background.
And I’m kinda PO’d at the gun industry. They are NOT doing their jobs!
South Africa, Columbia and Thailand lead us in gun murders per capita.
We’re only number four???
Whatever happened to American exceptionalism?

Yes that makes him a liar
So I stand by what I said, the NRA lied to the gullible base. And they are lying now? I mean you have exactly what to back up that they are not lying?
You cite all sort of links, so let’s see it.
My bad, NRA nor you could back up their lies in 08 and now , nor do you.

Lying is a horrible characteristic for anyone, only compounded by individuals who were tout their religion and love to lie.
You might be one of those false prophets that the Bible spoke about.

It appears that not only are folks not using their two brain cells but the blog group is rather lazy.
Perhaps google gun deaths and research suicide and black on black gun deaths.
I assume our leftist friends would like to reduce gun ownership as well as deport blacks and suicidal folks.
There- problem solved!

Big Business moguls have finally found a way to build vast personal fortunes. They have sucessfully bought the Republican Party and now have those political lackeys at their command. Next, they will go all out to buy the Democrats. They aren’t there yet, but the’re getting close. When this is accomplished, they will begin the financial rape of middle class America. All of our freedoms of speech and large protest marches will mean nothing as both parties will be interested only in keeping their corporate masters happy. When the electorate finally realizes that voting for either the Republicans or the Democrates does them no good at all, a third and fourth party, not owned by these sociopathics, will emerge and we will finally get our country back. By then, these moguls will have amassed huge personal fortunes and will probably move to some posh place in Europe.
