The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.
That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”
Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

Did the shooter play “Doom”, “World of Warcraft”, did he play paintball? Where did he get his knowledge of weapons and tactics? I haven’t read anything in his past that is out of the ordinary.

Perhaps, BADAss.
But how tragic is it that it takes some murderous maniac for a few people to learn the lesson?
Many years ago I became repulsed by Sly Stallone, Arnold, Bruce Willis et al, ad nauseum. And vowed to NEVER watch any of that filth. And if I ever see a movie/TV program where handguns/body counts are an integral part of the show, I turn it off.
This is my choice. And why I have strongly denounced Hollywood and the gun industry for their roles in promoting and profiting from depravity.
But then I realized it was the movie going public that repulsed me. These clowns just filled their vicarious need for bloodlust and to slaughter and ruin. Primarily in the name of “entertainment”.
Not to be a prude, but I find it rather sickening.
Even so, maybe after enough senseless slaughters, NOT revering ultra-violence will catch on in this country!
(Yeah, sure…)
BTW, sci-fi is, in and of itself, not ultra-violent.
And double BTW, not speaking out against this murderous pandemic in America is akin to tolerating it.

AS usual in the aftermath of a tragic event involving a lone sociopathic shooter we have the left wing anti-gun chorus coming out with their demands for restrictive gun control laws or outright banning of firearms. There are several million gun owners in this country the overwhelming majority are law abiding citizens who hurt no one with the lawful pursuit of their hobby. 19,000 Americans killed by guns, there are close to 3 times that many killed in traffic accidents and several thousand more killed accidently by other means. Maybe we should ban motorized vehicles, riding lawnmowers or ladders so we can protect our citizens. The left wants to penalize several million law abiding citizens who’re collectors, sportsman and target shooters. Truly ignorant as well as unAmerican.

Yes, sci-fi is not always violent. I myself went to Dragon Con last year, and really enjoyed the parade and costumes. Not a game player anymore. I used to play the old classics, Astroids, Pac Man, etc. I still have a huge stand up Astroid game in my house. Anyone attending Dragon Con this year?

That certain small minded people take these facts and twist them into their own rhetorical, fact-free, nonsense-filled, head in the sand diatribes and screeds is typical of the violence addicted in America.
If not so deadly, I would just laugh at them.

Since we have to pass a test to get a drivers license, why not make a gun proficency test necessary to buy a gun? After all, a car is a potentially deadly weapon and an untrained person behind the wheel would be very dangerous to the public. Why not apply that same kind of logic to guns? Oh wait!! I know!! This would reduce gun sales and gun manufacturers would lose some profits. And, since profit means everything to them and human lives mean nothing, and since they own Republican politicians, gun licencing will never happen.
Hey, is this a great country or what????????????????

Don’t sell guns to people who are depressed or show repressed angry. How do you screen for that in a gun shop.
Only possible control is to limit the types of guns and arms people can buy. Six shot revolvers and double barrel shot guns are ok. But limit rifles to those holding no more than six rounds. Those restrictions seem reasonable. Who needs a semi-auto rifle or pistol that holds 100 rounds of ammo.

Making the small percentage of gun owners with less than pure motives more accurate shooters, in my mind’ isn’t a worthy goal…I don’t like guns and they scare me. We are never going to get them out of our society but surely there is a better means of keeping them out of the wrong hands…

About 30,000 people die from gunshot wounds every year in America. A thorough review of this reveals the following:
1. Gun manufacturers will continue to sell as many wepaons as possible, including assualt rifles, and will press for the sale of even more lethal weapon sales in the future. Their crazed greed for profit clearly shows their total disregard for human life.
2. Republican politicians will continue to block any legal restrictions to these increased weapon sales. Their crazed greed for political power has prompted them to sell themselves to Big Business in order to obtain election and re-election funding. This also shows a complete lack of regard for human life.
3. Gun owners and potential gun buyers will insist on their “right to keep and bear arms” no matter how high the death toll gets. Their phallic failings are so painful that they must have relief by substituting guns, no matter how many people must die.
There will not be any change in these practices in the forseeable future. So, those of us not crazed by monetary, political, of phallic inadequatecy must learn to cope with this shooting gallery we call America.

Now that’s really a good idea. All kidding aside, that would halt the sale of a LOT of guns with the quickness. If the sellers and the buyers have to carry insurance on their guns — it could be worded with something like “if this gun falls into the hands of a toddler, a teen, etc. and an accident befalls one or more people because of the gun falling into the hands of said minors — insured agrees to the consequences set forth in Ammendment 9 of this agreement”. Etc., Etc., etc……..

In fact, cars could be made much safer. However, this would cost money. In order to keep costs the same, automakers would have to put much smaller engines in these cars. Also, the speed limit would have to be lowered to 55. While this would not bother me or many other motorists, the phallic folks, Big Business and politicians would strongly object.

I think avoiding another collapse should be a national security issue and we should focus on it like we focused on crushing aq.
There is some low hanging fruit to cut like big oil welfare and military spending but the gop will vote no.

so if the shooter in CO was using a borrowed legal and insured weapon…it would cover what?
Let’s take it one step at a time. First let’s say the CO shooter bought his gun from a gunshow. First the gunshow person would have to have the gun insured. He would not sell the gun until the buyer has insurance in place releaseing the seller of all indemnity concerning the gun, (like a car dealer).
The buyer would have insurance — his coverage would be more detailed than the guy at the gunshow. The buyers would cover special provisions if the gun was lost or stolen. Let’s say if the gun is lost, the buyer must report it to the police within 12 hours of noticing its lost. If not, anything that transpires with that gun, if illegal OR legal, the buyer will be held totally responsible for all injuries or activities incurred with said gun.
If stolen, the buyer has 6 hours to report the theft to police; if not, the same penalties as before.
Ok here’s the big question – Why would the NRA go for this?
Any takers on that one?

Dog – I think the shooter will deal with the results on this one…..
In the scenario you describe, nobody in CO would benefit from the insurance because the legal owner committed the crime….so again, what are you misguidedly trying to accomplish with this gun insurance mandate??

I’ve seen Bynum, not in the same manner as others have, but yeah, she looks like she’s had a procedure or two. I’ve seen/heard enough that nothing surprises me anymore. Instead, news like that usually leads me to “open mic night at the Chuckle House” type thoughts and jokes nowadays. I guess it’s my coping mechanism or something.

I envision a form of insurance that works like this: If the gun is used in a crime, then the insurance will kick in. And the value to lawabiding citizens in having such insurance is that if the gun is stolen, it is their insurance that will pay and the victims cannot come back on the legal owner for costs.

So what are those avg costs at this time that come back to the legal owner?

Following up on our discussion, do you agree
that the SCOTUS has ruled
that state governments can
ban all guns except black
powder guns in common
use at the timethe 2nd
amendment was passed.”
Nope. That’s not what they ruled. You haven’t read the ruling or you wouldn’t even have come up with that.
The Second Amendment doesn’t retrict firearms to black powder and flintlocks any more than the First Amendment restricts a free press to ink, quills and lead type.
You’re starting to weary me a little ………………..

EC: nobody in CO would benefit from the insurance because the legal owner committed the crime….
Yes they will if the insurance is modeled after car insurance. If the legal owner of the car was involved in a drunk driving incident that caused the passenger in another car to be harmed — the person in the other car can sue the driver’s insurance company for damages.

Hon, what we are discussing is alternatives to gun control. Even if the costs are…at present…nothing, all it takes is one lawsuit won by victims against the legal owner of a gun, and all restraints will be off. Heck, you can already sue the owner of a bar if someone leaves their establisment drunk and causes an accident.

So we are going to mandate insurance to negate costs even though we do not not know the costs?
That is deep, HON.

RT: For the wingNUTS to prognosticate that if they or one of their ilk had simply been there, armed, this would’ve been prevented, is just another wingNUT fantasy…
Yeah, that’s the part that makes me laugh too. If you have 10 guys running around with weapons, how does the police, (who were called immediately when the shooting began), know who is the good guy and who isn’t? How do the various “shooters” know who is the bad guy and who isn’t? It would be like a reenactment of the Gunfight at the OK Corral.
EC: DDR – so i report the stolen gun 7 hrs after I notice then a year from now someone commits a crime with the now 1 yr and 7hr stolen weapon and the previously once legal owner of the gun (me) is liable?
No — if you report your car stolen and someone commits a crime with it, are you liable then? Of course not. Grow up.

gee, why not mandate insurance for bricks in your yard or on your house in case someone picks it up and throws it thru a window or beats someone else to death with it

You didn’t ask for costs, you asked for cost to the GUN OWNER. We do know the COSTS.

You didn’t ask for costs, you asked for costs to the GUN OWNER. We do know the costs: the cost in death, injury and police costs.
