The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.
That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”
Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

Joe Mama is simply mistaken about CFA having a corporate stance against gays. Any gay person can walk into cfa and get a meal or apply for a job. Its just another nonsensical liberal LIE.

This has been hashed out all week long on this thread. Let’s not get back into that sort of thing at this time, as I feel it would dishonor Mr. Henry’s memory.
Let us simply agree that his death is sad and that it came at a particularly unfortunate time, and let us further agree to express our sympathies to his family, friends and co-workers.
If you wish to pose that question to me again on another day, I will certainly be pleased to respond constructively to it.

I don’t pay for cable in my own house, so I don’t watch any of the cable news networks. [...] I mean, even Hannity or Beck have never done that to my knowledge.
By your own account you claim not to watch cable news, and you want us to logically accept your anecdotal evidence that you haven’t seen Hannity and Beck (cable news staple) do something as evidence of journalistic significance?

I know that. But I think that has been a tradition of radio for many decades – almost everyone with a radio show has done that to (presumably) garner sufficient advertising revenue to pay for the show. I was specifically talking about cable news. And Schultz was not advertising for his show, but for education (as if that system as it stands is fine and needs only our money to continue it on its merry way). I don’t think anyone would argue that education is not very important. But who is seriously talking about its reform (just like taxes, spending, the deficit and a host of other essential matters)?

Towncrier — “I know that. But I think that has been a tradition of radio for many decades – almost everyone with a radio show has done that to (presumably) garner sufficient advertising revenue to pay for the show.”
I’ve dealt with radio stations in the past, and from what I recall from their rate cards, you do pay something of a premium to get a ‘personality’ to deliver the ad. Obviously, Joe Blow The Morning Ho down at the local AM station won’t fetch as much of a premium as syndicated national personalities like Hannity or Beck would, but you’re right on that point.
“I was specifically talking about cable news. And Schultz was not advertising for his show, but for education (as if that system as it stands is fine and needs only our money to continue it on its merry way).”
Hmm. That almost sounds more like some sort of public service ad. Can you tell us more about it?
“I don’t think anyone would argue that education is not very important. But who is seriously talking about its reform (just like taxes, spending, the deficit and a host of other essential matters)?”
Well, there’s been a lot of discussion about it on the AJC blogs lately; there always seems to be something brewing at the state level with education in GA. Or are you speaking about education at the national level?

True enough. Which is why we usually don’t criticize Schultz as a hack or biased because we already know where he’s coming from. Otherwise the stupidity of his comments and people like Sharpton simply aren’t worthy of bringing up.

I don’t pay for cable in my own house, so I don’t watch any of the cable news networks. But I have been housesitting for a friend the past couple of days and spent some time watching them. Fox News is clearly slanted to the right, but I was surprised to see how shamelessly partisan MSNBC is in it’s “coverage” of events AND even its commercials. I mean Sharpton’s show, for instance, is a complete joke (and not just because he cannot articulate ideas very well). And to have a lightning pole like Ed Schultz appearing in commercials is incomprehensible. I mean, even Hannity or Beck have never done that to my knowledge.
You can take your fingers out of your ears now, many of you liberals (and go on pretending Fox News is an aberration of journalism not practiced by liberals).

I hadn’t read his interview with the Baptist publication. Yet statements made by a CEO in a public interview cannot necessarily be taken as corporate policy. That should be obvious The CFA has made corporate donations to organizations that oppose certain gay rights. That is no different from many companies that do similar things – many for liberal causes. Aside from that, there is no federal protection for homosexuals as a class. ENDA has been promoted by liberals for decades now, but it has not passed. I am not aware that CFA has denied employment to gays, although they may not advance far in management (given Cathy’s statements).
The larger issue here, of course, is whether or not LGBT individuals have claim to constitutional protection. I would argue they do not unless it can be proven that homosexuality is based solely on genetic factors – like race and sex. People can’t help that they are born male or female or are a certain age. Those are non-behavioral characteristics. They can help whether or not they keep a homosexual “orientation” they (jn my opinion) with which they were “imprinted” by a significant other in early childhood. That is proven by the fact that some homosexuals have successfully changed their orientation. I am NOT suggesting it is easy, but it can be done. There are now plenty of companies that will employ and promote LGBT people so, to me, this is an instance of the minority trying to force their acceptance upon the majority. Boycott CFA all you want – I have no problem with that.

Aside from religion (the free practice of which is a constitutional right in and of itself), the only other such categories involve status (derived from a decision to do something in the past – such as serve in the armed forces or beget a family). So I believe my distinction holds – homosexuality is a practice, not a genetic characteristic or a status.

Moonbat betty,
And liberal rag papers everywhere wonder why their circulation is down. On the same page CNN’s CEO is leaving- ostensibly because of their poor ratings. Just like the other lib tv networks and the lib newspapers they just can’t seem to figure it out.

“One is a policy. The other is merely a statement.
doesn’t matter. He had a chance to say “our policy is” and “MY opinion is” and he didn’t. Official policy or not, HE tied it to his company. It’s Chic-Fil-A’s attitude. Doesn’t matter if it’s a policy or not.
Bottom lie: it is FALSE to say it’s ONLY his personal opinion. By his own words it is more than that.

“The Philadelphia City Council will consider a resolution condemning Chick-fil-A for what one city leader called “anti-American” attitudes that promote “hatred, bigotry and discrimination.”
Hummmm ……………… the Chrisitan CEO of Chick-fil-A serves and hires homosexuals without discrimination but is not in agreement with Homosexual Marriage.
I wonder if Philly is also going to condemn Muslims for beheading them at large ?

“Doesn’t matter. He was asked about his BUSINESS and he replied WE. That is more than just his personal opinion. You asserted it was his personal opinion. It was more than that. He was not asked for his personal opinion.”
It does indeed matter. Or do you think suppose that the comments of those who drafted and ratified the Constitution should be SUBSTITUTED for what that document actually says? Comments made in a public interview are just those. Corporate policies are codified in writing. And, BTW, you do know what a board of directors is, right?

I was watching some of the match earlier today between UAR and Uruguay and chuckled when I thought of our Republicans here.
In a lot of ways the next two weeks are gonna really suck for them.
All those foreigners!! Eeewwwwww!
“With so many Africans in Greece … At least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat home made food!!!” Papachristou wrote July 22 on her Twitter account. The remark has not been taken down, although Papachristou, 23, apologized for the tweet.
West Nile Virus killed one man in Athens in June and five other cases of the mosquito-borne illness were reported in Greece, according to Reuters.

The comment drew condemnation throughout much of the world, with many saying that the tweet was racist.
The Hellenic Olympic Committee kicked Papachristou off the Greek Olympic team “for statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement,” the Associated Press reported.
Papachristou apologized Wednesday for her remarks, although she denied being racist, and said that was not her intention when she made the comments.
“I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account. I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights,” the Greek athlete wrote. “My dream is connected to the Olympic Games and I could not possibly participate if I did not respect their values. Therefore, I could never believe in discrimination between human beings and races.”
Papachristou continued, “I would like to apologize to all my friends and fellow athletes, who I may have insulted or shamed, the National Team, as well as the people and companies who support my athletic career. Finally, I would like to apologize to my coach and my family.”
Papachristou’s ban from the 2012 London Olympics marks the first time an athlete was expelled from the worldwide competition for comments made on social media, according to Sports Illustrated.
Isidoros Kouvelos, head of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, said Papachristou “showed no respect for the basic Olympic value.
“She made a mistake and in life we pay for our mistakes,” he said, according to the BBC.<
