Time to put on those travelin’ shoes and go a-fishin’

The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.

That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”

Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

I know a few people in airline security, so I’ve gotten to hear the tales of incidents at 30,000 feet (even a few of them first hand re-tellings). I’ve been lucky enough to not have any incidents on any flights I’ve been on, but I have seen gate agents walk people off planes and deny them boarding before the plane even leaves the gate.

While there will always be the potential for rouge D.A.’s generally the legal criteria for employing justifiable deadly force is ABILITY ( did the perp/victim possess the ability to kill or maim), OPPORTUNITY (did the perp/victim have the opportunity to kill or maim, and lastly JEOPARDY ( did the shooter have true justification for believing that their life was in jeopardy when they employed deadly force).

Opportunity is the one metric that some anti-gun D.A.’s have used to unfairly prosecute someone who shot and killed an attacker. They’ll manufacture a scenario that attempts to show that the shooter had the opportunity to safely retreat. That condition has cause many states to adopt some version of a “stand your ground law” to prevent an unfair prosecution and possible conviction of someone who lawfully defended themselves.

I really hate to be the bearer of bad news for the cons but stocks are going up, businesses are looking for educated people to hire, GDP is positive. Sure, all those things are negatives for Republicans but they’re positives for most others except maybe a stray Constitutionalist or Libertarian.

Brosephus — “I know a few people in airline security, so I’ve gotten to hear the tales of incidents at 30,000 feet (even a few of them first hand re-tellings).”

It was a lot less than it sounds like.

Again, it was *right* after 9/11, no more than a month. I remember it because I was flying United instead of Delta for a short period around that time when Delta flights were heavily booked for some reason. And the United flights stand out in my mind because they served a full meal between Washington Dulles and Atlanta — and they were still using silverware and steak knives. (!!!)

Anyway, the pax in First boarded first, and we watched the Coach pax get on while sipping our drinks. One really hippie-looking kid got on board and he had this glassy-eyed expression like he’d just smoked a bowl in the lavatory before boarding. One of the other F pax goes “looks like he’s already cruising at 30,000 feet, ha ha ha” and we all had a laugh about it.

So we push back, take off and ascend. When the first bell went off (we’re over 10,000 feet and you can get up now), the hippie kid came BOILING into the F compartment, and I mean he was moving with a PURPOSE. He didn’t look at ALL like the stoned kid who’d boarded 20 minutes before. I leapt up, as did a couple other pax in F, but the flight attendant turned around and went “I’m sorry sir, but this lavatory is reserved for the First Class passengers. You’ll find two lavatories in the rear of the Coach section.”

The kid paused for a moment as if to say ‘man, this establishment chick is really harshing my buzz,’ and then he turned around wearing that SAME glassy-eyed, dopey expression he had when he first boarded. If that FA hadn’t clued in to what he wanted — and he didn’t say a word — then I might have been on the evening news.

Today and yesterdays triple digit gain for the stock market was fueled by the ECB announcing it would intercede to ease borrowing rates to help stabilize the European economies on the brink of collapse. Unfortunately, just a bandage and with today’s announced anemic GDP and other bad domestic economic news along with an expected dismal job report next week the recent market gains will probably evaporate.

On the eve of Mitt Romney’s visit to Israel, President Barack Obama signed into law a military aid bill for that staunch American ally at a much-publicized White House ceremony that highlighted the political advantages of incumbency.

“What this legislation does is bring together all the outstanding cooperation that we have seen, really, at an unprecedented level between our two countries that underscore our unshakable commitment to Israel security,” Obama said as he signed the measure at his desk in the Oval Office.

The president also announced he would speed another $70 million to Israel to advance the so-called “Iron Dome” short-range missile defense system, a response to sustained rocket fire from Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

“This is a program that has been critical in terms of providing security and safety for the Israeli families,” he said. “We are standing by our friends in Israel when it comes to these kinds of attacks.”

The signing ceremony, a relatively uncommon event in the Obama White House, fit a pattern this week of the administration trumpeting relations with Britain, Israel and Poland—the three countries on Romney’s trip overseas to polish his diplomatic credentials.

“I hope that, as I sign as this bill, once again everybody understands how committed all of us are—Republicans and Democrats—as Americans to our friends in making sure that Israel is safe and secure,” said Obama.

The president also deplored the “tragic” attack on Israelis in Bulgaria and said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta would shortly travel to Israel to “find additional ways that we can ensure such cooperation at a time when, frankly, the region is experiencing heightened tensions.” That was a reference to escalating worries over Iran’s nuclear program—and Israel’s repeated warnings that it cannot tolerate a nuclear-armed Tehran and may resort to military force.

While abroad, Romney has muted his usually sharp criticisms of Obama’s handling of U.S.-Israel relations. A spokeswoman for his campaign welcomed the new law, but hit out at White House press secretary Jay Carney over an awkward, cringe-inducing exchange during his daily briefing on Thursday in which he declined to say what Israel’s capital is.

“Gov. Romney has long called for enhancing security cooperation with Israel and is happy to see that steps are being taken in that direction,” said the spokeswoman, Amanda Henneberg. “Unfortunately this bill does nothing to address yesterday’s evasiveness from the White House on whether President Obama recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which raised doubt about the president’s commitment to our closest ally in the region.”

(Longstanding U.S. policy is to regard the status of Jerusalem, which Israel has long declared its capital, as something to be resolved in so-called “final status” negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Henneberg’s comments highlighted one of the political advantages of being the challenger. In 2008, then-candidate Obama said Jerusalem was Israel’s capital. But since taking office, he has lined up behind every president before him in delaying the transfer of the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.)

Up Up and Away

July 27th, 2012

Recent public opinion polls show Obama with a commanding lead over Romney among Jewish voters—but less than his advantage over John McCain in 2008. And with both sides predicting a hard-fought election, neither candidate is writing off any potential gains.

In a “fact sheet” on the signing, the White House underlined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s May 2012 praise for Obama’s “ironclad commitment to Israel’s security.” “He rightly said that our security cooperation is unprecedented,” the prime minister told the American Israel Political Affairs Committee. “And he has backed those words with deeds.”

Netanyahu, who was to play host to Romney on Saturday, has had a frequently tense relationship with the American president. In November 2011, Obama told French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who branded Netanyahu “a liar,” that “you’ve had enough of him, but I have to deal with him every day.”

Obama’s more conciliatory message got a boost from Israel’s veteran ambassador to Washington, Michael Oren, who expressed “profound gratitude” to the president for signing the bill. Oren dubbed the legislation “the most comprehensive commitment on the part of the United States to the short- and long-term security of its unshakable ally, Israel.”

“The Enhanced Security Cooperation Act sends an unequivocal message of support to the people of Israel at a time of great uncertainty throughout the entire Middle East, and reminds the region of the unbreakable bond between our two nations,” Oren said in a statement.

The military aid bill sailed through Congress—just two “no” votes in the House of Representatives in May, a voice vote to clear the Senate last week.

White House press secretary Jay Carney denied politics played a role in the bill signing. “The timing of the passage and signing of this legislation was not up to us, but up to Congress,” he said.

Got a chance to catch my breath and check in to see what the kooks are whining about today. Hmmm. Seems they all offended that Mitt told the truth about London having some problems. That’s the problem with them “uncomfortable truths”. Libs just don’t like em. Either that or its the fact that they tend to wake up every day wondering how they gonna get offended that day. Kinda like doggone with that uncomfortable truth bout you know what. Tee hee. She all offended she is.

Oh noes. Doomy done rattled some cages again today.

In some other news I saw on the front page of the AJC rag that CNN is sinking even lower. Fox news just eating they lunch they are.

I see that a lib was bragging about positive economic growth. Is this kook for real? Oh my God. 2nd qtr growth just came in at a 1.5% growth clip and this locknut is extolling the virtues of the O economy? My God the kooks get more delusional every day they do.

And now I hear Jay unfairly kicked Moonbat Betty off? Lawdy. So I wonder if USinUK is gonna get the boot for calling scout an idiot- RED FLAG! Be real interesting to see Jay’s selective justice. I already seen many of the kooks opining for Doomy banishment. No surprise there. Typical lib strategy. If they can’t handle those “uncomfortable truths” they try to squash the free speech. Depending on the gun, expect deafing noise and serious muzzle blast because of the confined space. Glass will explode everywhere, even if it is safety glass, eye damage is likely. Fox News is clearly slanted to the right, but I was surprised to see how shamelessly partisan MSNBC is in it’s “coverage” of events AND even its commercials. I mean Sharpton’s show, for instance, is a complete joke (and not just because he cannot articulate ideas very well). And to have a lightning pole like Ed Schultz appearing in commercials is incomprehensible. I mean, even Hannity or Beck have never done that to my knowledge.

You can take your fingers out of your ears now, many of you liberals (and go on pretending Fox News is an aberration of journalism not practiced by liberals).
