The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.
That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”
Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

The neocons from the GWB administration, Stephen Hadley specifically, has started to beat the drums of war. He indicates the USA is not doing enough to help the Syrian people against Assad.
This is the man who was one of the architects of the Iraq war and is presently an advisor to Mitt Romney.

Normal Free — “But let me ask you this, I can see no home defense situation that would require an assault rifle. Most home defense situations are usually home invasions, with the perp already inside the house, rendering an assault rifle useless. A good revolver, with special loads, would be the only choice if you are quick enough, but mostly the perp, if good, will use surprise and you have no chance at the weapon….then you have only given a perp a new weapon to commit mayhem… Reality.”
The muzzle velocity and penetration of assault rifle ammo means that their stopping power can be somewhat limited compared to a good pistol, revolver or shotgun. Depending on what assault weapon you use, you could easily get thru-and-thru hits, which won’t slow a bad guy down as much as the raw punch of a shotgun slug or a heavy revolver round would.

When it comes to stopping a con in his tracks, it only takes one inexpensive weapon, one that can be obtained at numerous locations without any waiting period–a Raygun. That’s right. A picture of Ronnie Raygun. Just point it at a con and they’re like deer in headlights. They start drooling and their eyes get glazed over within a minute. But beware. Don’t let them stare at it longer than two minutes or they’ll start trickling down their own legs.

I hear you but as always it depends on the situation:
1) The size of the home ……. small apartment or huge house.
2) Location of the home ……. inner city, country or Mexican border.
3) Experience of the home owner ……… novice vs. combat infantry veteran just back from Afghanistan.
For example, if you think someone is trying to steal your tractor out in the barn you might want to go outside with an AR-15 vs. a shotgun or pistol (acutally take the pistol too ……………..
If you hear someone in the house and they are coming up the stairs you may want to meet them at the top with a 12 gauge.
If they are already in your bedroom and you wake up you may want to respond with a pistol.

“you change the subject and said “but but but cons”
Uh, no. I’d already been *making* that very same point since earlier in the morning.
There’s no ‘but but but cons’ involved. It’s an observation that cons are using the ‘but it’s LEGAL’ as a defense for Romney and his investments, but they’re ignoring that when it comes to women who want abortions. That means that they’re holding pregnant women to a higher moral and ethical standard than the one to which they hold a man who wants to be President. IMO, there’s absolutely no logical justification for that.
It’s like when Michael Moore released Fahrenheit 9/11 and repeatedly accused President Bush of misleading the American people with fabrications — only to get accused of the same thing himself. Why, exactly would someone hold a self-admitted political commentator to a higher standard of honesty and ethics than one would hold the President of the United States to?
It *appears* to me that cons give passes to their own — particularly their own leaders — that they won’t give to ordinary people. It’s as if being at the top of the heap somehow *excuses* you from having to maintain a high standard of ethics and character.
“…exactly like the cons do w/ a “but but but Obama” 10 posts into a new topic.”

I like guns just as much as many others. I’m trained to respond to situations as such. However, if I have a chance to avoid a life/death situation and let someone better equipped handle it, I have no problem with being a great witness. At the same time, if someone’s in my home, then I have to do whatever it takes to protect me and my family. I am not, however, going to inject myself into a situation that I can avoid.

Because:
1) You have a right to protect your property (citizens arrest and deadly force if necessary based on what the perp does).
2) The police may be a half-hour away because of where you live.
3) This may be the third tractor in two years you have had stolen and you can’t afford another one or even the insurance deductable.

You don’t use deadly force to combat a crime against property (except car-jackings in the State of Georgia which is authorized).
You combat the theft of your property and IF THE PERP ESCALATES the situation causing you to use deadly force to protect yourself then that’s HIS problem.
The police confront this everyday when they roll up on a robbery or burglary. If they shoot the suspect it’s NOT because of the theft ………….. it’s because the perp ESCALATED the situation to where the officer was in fear of his life or seriously bodily injury.

Where is that in the constitution? And of course common law has long provided since the spring gun cases in the 1600s that life is more valuable than property. But of course, in Scout world, life matters except when his property is involved, or they ain’t the right religion.

If that’s what you feel, then by all means, do what you think you need to do. As an active member of the law enforcement community, I would never advocate that position.
What you fail to consider is that property can be replaced. Life can’t. I don’t care if the police are 2 hours away. If I can get a description of the person, vehicle, tag number, or anything that will help them, I’d rather advocate doing that instead of putting your life in jeopardy.
I don’t own anything that’s more valuable than my life. If I’m protecting my life, or the life of my family, then I’m going to respond as such. If it’s property, what good does it do to protect it if I’m killed in the process?

This sounds like the more reasonable course of action, but again, you’d better hope he doesn’t also have a weapon. The perp will likely think you’re shooting at him and would return fire. And he won’t be aiming for your tires, I bet.
I’m thinking about getting in my car or truck and ramming the front end of the tractor to either tip it over or damage the front wheel. And again, hoping he doesn’t have a firearm.

I hear you …………. it always depends on the situation.
Exactly. In the barn situation, the perp is not in my home or threatening the life of me or my family. Getting 3 or 4 tractors stolen could be God’s way of telling me to get out of farming. After getting 2 tractors stolen, I would have probably done something to upgrade security around my barn anyway.
If my life isn’t in danger, I’m not willing to put it in danger just to protect some material item. That’s just my outlook.

Gotta disagree with you on that one. It’s one thing to protect your life. I tend to think my life is more valuable than any man-made item. I can’t answer for you though.

Fred — “You preach it scout, the folks on the airliners thta were crashed into the World Trade center sat there and did NOTHING.”
To be fair, in the vast majority of previous American hijackings, the pax were let go without injury at the conclusion of the hijacking. But the rules of hijackings changed for Americans on 9/11.
Charles Krauthammer observed as much in a column right after 9/11, and pointed out that when the people on the 4th flight found out what was going on, they resisted energetically. I have no doubt that if the people on the other three planes had had the benefit of that same knowledge, they would have resisted in like manner.

If you’re going solely based on theory, Joe, the perp would likely run if anything, weapon or not.

Brocephus (and JHM): Nowadays you never know what the kook perpetrating the crime is going to do. Were I 100% sure he’d take the stuff and leave that would be one thing. However more and more (especially with the the and in GA 2 strikes rule) the perps feel they have nothing to lose. Although it’s a trite little saying it’s true:
I’d rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

Shrug. I’d still rather ram the tractor. It’ll still stop him and at least I’ll have some small degree of protection if he does decide to fire on me.

It’s difficult to claim banishment while you were still here but posting under a different handle.
I’m guessing it was just a time-out.

I’ll add that Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, got his ass whipped when he tried to light his shoes. The “Fruit-of-the-Loom” bomber got his ass whipped by passengers in addition to getting his junk burned up. Countless others who have tried to open doors or have been otherwise disruptive on flights have generally been given the business by passengers on planes. I don’t think anything like that will happen again without passengers going balls to the wall to defend themselves.

A young feller on one of my flights shortly after 9/11 almost got a beat-down from me and the other pax in First Class because we thought he was about to start something. Fortunately, one of the flight attendants recognized what was happening and defused the situation.

I completely understand, and I don’t disagree with you. That said, in Scout’s example of someone breaking into my barn, I’m not going to leave the safety of my house to confront him in the barn, especially if I don’t know whether he has accomplices or lookouts waiting for me to leave the safety of my house.
That’s why my alarm is always set to go off instantly if something goes awry. It’s gonna take a few seconds to get to my bedroom, and by the time you get there, my defenses will be set and armed to protect.
