Time to put on those travelin’ shoes and go a-fishin’
The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.
That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”
Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

You know, I continued to travel weekly by air for several years following 9/11. I have a life to lead and I had a job to do, and a bunch of nuts with box cutters weren’t going to stop me. And in the same spirit, jackasses with shootin’ irons aren’t going to stop me from doing my business and shopping wherever the heck I please.
People who shiver and shake over the possibility that they might encounter a shooter in public and quite simply overreacting to something that is *very* unlikely to ever happen to them. I participated in a discussion on Free Republic shortly after 9/11 in which one person I had previously been friendly with said that he wouldn’t get on any more domestic airlines unless and until he was allowed to take his pistol with him.
I told him “fine, then you stay the hell off my flights. I don’t trust your aim in the air and I don’t want your stray shots hitting me.”
Pax are perfectly capable of fighting back. And so are theater-goers, college students and any other kind of ordinary people you care to name. I’m not going to pack heat in public because I don’t need it, and I’m not going to stress out because the Batman Shooter might be hiding behind that trash can over there.
Life’s hazardous sometimes and you’re not going to get out of it alive anyway. So why worry so much?

I watched about 3 minutes of Piers Morgan with the Romoneys last evening. Piers noted there are about 50 death/year due to guns in Britain as opposed to our thousand and thousands. he challeged mittens to say what he would do about it and of course mittens said there are 30 million guns out there, what am I supposed to do about it? You seem to defend the right to bear arms most ardently and i support that, but are you telling me that you also support the extended magazines, body armour piercing ammo, assault weapons and the like?
I have a friend who is a hard core survivalist and he does not own a single assault weapon, or for that matter, a semi automatic hand gun. His arsenal, and it is an arsenal, consists of a compound bow for large game and .22 cal air rifle for small game. These, he says, are for those times when you may need to feed yourself and not be heard. He also has a large caliber black powder rifle for big game, when he has no worry about being heard. His only cartridge weapons are strictly for self defense. A revolver and a lever action rifle, both chambered in the same caliber. He figures that brass, smokeless powder and bullets for these weapons will become problematical in the long run. He can always make black powder but that would wreak havoc on modern weapons. He says, his words, anyone depending on long term survival using only assault rifles and semiautomatic pistols would be dead or dying of starvation within a year. In other words, owning assault rifles, extended magazines and the like are for fools….men with serious “richard” problems… just sayin’

The House has sent 29 job bills to the Senate, none of which have been brought to the floor for a vote because Harry Reid won’t allow them to. The House has also sent a budget to the Senate which Reid won’t allow a Senate vote. The Senate hasn’t passed a budget since Obama’s been in office. Get current with the facts.

You raise some difficult questions and I will “call ‘em like I see ‘em”:
A) Assault weapons:
1) This is a hard issue and most people don’t want to address it but the original intent of the 2nd Amendment was a final check and balance against a tyrannical government. The SCOTUS refers to that in Heller. Therefore, military weapons should be held by the populace. There has always been the test of reasonableness (flame throwers, bombs, etc.) and the Congress/Courts have handled that I think approriately and will in the future. It will go up and down.
2) Some folks like a military style weapon for home defense ………. especially if they live way out alone or maybe on the Mexican border?
B) Body Armor:
I have no problem restricting this to military/police but just keep in mind that a determined person like Holmes (look what he did to his apartment) if force to could have made himself even better body armor than what he purchased. He could have used steel plate and designed his own.
C) Armor Piercing Ammo:
I have no problem with restricting this. It’s up to Congress, etc. However, to this date I don’t think that has been a big issue.
In any case, a mass shooter would not choose armor piercing ammo against civilians. That actually would do less damage against a human body than a slower, softer round ……….. and they know that. They are into mass casualties ……….. that’s why he also brought the shotgun.
D) Extended Magazines:
This is another difficult area but keep in mind that the United States won WW II with an M-1 that used an 8 round clip.
The fact that in this case he had one of those 100 round drums turned out for the best because it jammed. The more rounds you put in a magazine the more chance it will do just that. That’s why the military pretty much sticks to 20 round magazines or uses belt fed machine guns.
Even if you restrict magazines to 10 rounds, there are so 20 round magazines already out there that it will never make a difference. I don’t think Congress would ever just outlaw all that are out there.
Someone who is practiced, can shoot and load 10 round magazines at just as good a rate as a drum with the fear of it malfunctioning.
As I have said before, I would rather have a 12 gauge pump for close defense than an AR-15 anyway. It won’t malfunction and with practice you can load and shoot one round at a time quite rapidly.
E) I have tried to answer your questions as truthfully and honestly as I can. It’s a difficult area.
If you want to respond in a polite, reasoned manner I will be happy to continue.

Let me explain.
You have also heard of the 4th, 5th and 6th amendments I am sure (the right against unreasonable searches, the right against self-incrimination and the right to an attorney).
Over the period of our nation’s history (modern history at least) thousands and thousands of violent criminals have been released or there was a failure to convict due to the application of those three Amendments. It most cases, the issue involved a mere “technicality” that allowed those individuals to be turned loose in society. The governors of Georgia and Wisconsin have an approval rating of below 50%, and the governor of Wisconsin was almost recalled.
And the House of Rep. has a 11 % approval rating.

Mass murders of 5 or more people is less than 1% of recorded homicides. That statistic has been about the same for several decades, which include the many years where high capacity magazines of 20 rounds or more along with so called assault weapons have been available for sale to the public. Banning high capacity magazines and semi-automatic military type weapons from lawful ownership wouldn’t accomplish very much to stop the sociopaths in a free and open society.

A) Assault weapons:
1) This is a hard issue and most people don’t want to address it but the original intent of the 2nd Amendment was a final check and balance against a tyrannical government. The SCOTUS refers to that in Heller. Therefore, military weapons should be held by the populace. There has always been the test of reasonableness (flame throwers, bombs, etc.) and the Congress/Courts have handled that I think approriately and will in the future. It will go up and down.
2) Some folks like a military style weapon for home defense ………. especially if they live way out alone or maybe on the Mexican border?

OK, this is all well and good, but you know as well as I, that in a fire fight situation, home defense or not, rookies will burn though their ammo with these guns rather rapidly. I agree with our assessment about the shot gun though.
But let me ask you this, I can see no home defense situation that would require an assault rifle. Most home defense situations are usually home invasions, with the perp already inside the house, rendering an assault rifle useless. A good revolver, with special loads, would be the only choice if you are quick enough, but mostly the perp, if good, will use surprise and you have no chance at the weapon….then you have only given a perp a new weapon to commit mayhem… Reality.
