Time to put on those travelin’ shoes and go a-fishin’

The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.

That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”

Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

Doom — “Perhaps you’re having reading comprehension difficulties again. I never said they should be denied due to poor “taste”. I said they had every legal reason to build there but that it was simply in poor taste to do so. Pay attention.”

Yes, well, that’s why I *asked,* so you could clarify yourself. Pay attention. :D

“My only other point was that a Mosque is out of place in the financial district.”

IIRC, they already owned the property in question.

“But I never said they shouldn’t legally be able to build it. Furthermore if there are churches close by then I certainly have no problem with a mosque also being nearby. To my knowledge there are no other churches very close by. If I am mistaken and there are then boom- the Muslims have an even greater claim to build a mosque there.”

56,000 people live in the Financial District, more than doubling the number that lived there before 9/11. I’d say the influx of residents is a very good reason for congregations to want to establish churches, temples and mosques down there.

Joe mama,

The Jack Daniel’s case obviously is an exception and I’m sure there are exceptions that were put through due to backroom politics all over the country. Politics, jobs, etc. Doesn’t make it right and again this is an exception and not the rule.

We’ve discussed Walmart plenty of times and personally I’ve always been of the opinion that one group of people shouldn’t be allowed to deny other people the right to get a local walmart and have access to cheap shyte. However what you’re missing again is that in these cases its at least the whole community or a good portion of the community in opposition to the Walmart as opposed to a single politician or small group of pols arbitrarily deciding for the people based on their own political whims.

For a while, Smyrna banned liquor sales in strip clubs. Only the ones that chose not to serve liquor got their business licenses renewed. So there was discrimination of the kind that you’re saying doesn’t happen.”So there was discrimination of the kind that you’re saying doesn’t happen.”- Joe mama

Nope. Smyrna banned liquor sales in ALL strip clubs. All strip clubs were treated consistently in that regard. If you wanted to stay open you could. You just wouldn’t be selling liquor is all.

In regards to Walmart from what I understand there is usually also no Target or other super retailer in town also when people oppose a Walmart. And if there is then you won’t see me championing the cause of people who want to oppose Walmart just for the hell of it. But again I think you miss my point. At least in the case of opposing a Walmart its a good deal of the community that doesn’t want it as opposed to a single pol or a handful of pols opposing the store because of some political issue that has no bearing on that store or businesse’s effect on the community. And I still think they are wrong in doing so. I will give them one point though. In some towns Walmart has moved a store into one area of town to drive out the small businesses right around it. It will then close that store after the small businesses right there have been shuttered and reopen a store a few more miles away that’s more centralized to the town- making people drive farther away after running off those old businesses. Its an anti-competitive strategy that both cons and libs have noticed before.

I’ve no problem with people suing the crap out of CFA if the restaurant openly discriminates in hiring, promotion or if it uses bully tactics such as several Christians bullying a Muslim into praying with them. I personally find that repulsive.

Keep in mind though that any large company is going to have a number of suits against them at any given point in time. That’s just reality in the parasitic, litigious nation that we live in. Even you ought to be able to figure that one out.

Can everybody agree that all movies starring Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler and Mike Myers be banned in the US (and the money whore Johnny Depp is quickly moving into that same arena)? My God, the mere fact that any studio is willing to make a movie starring either one of these losers is incredible and it is really an insult to all of us. They (Hollywood) just keep on putting out pieces of crap. Have we, the movie going audience sunk to such lows? For that matter, when was the last time you saw a really, really good film that wasn’t loaded with computer generated eye candy and an excessively loud soundtrack that actually had a good story line and that had good actors? No, instead we are given Pirates of the Caribbean Part Nano, Search for the Golden Seven Headed Dwarf (or whatever).

Doom — “The Jack Daniel’s case obviously is an exception and I’m sure there are exceptions that were put through due to backroom politics all over the country. Politics, jobs, etc. Doesn’t make it right and again this is an exception and not the rule.”

I’m not saying it makes anything right. But I *am* saying that your claim — liquor and the like are banned because that’s how the majority of the local citizenry wants it — isn’t always true.

“We’ve discussed Walmart plenty of times and personally I’ve always been of the opinion that one group of people shouldn’t be allowed to deny other people the right to get a local walmart and have access to cheap shyte. However what you’re missing again is that in these cases its at least the whole community or a good portion of the community in opposition to the Walmart as opposed to a single politician or small group of pols arbitrarily deciding for the people based on their own political whims.”

Actually, I think in some cases, that’s *exactly* what it’s been. I’m going to leave shortly, but don’t let me off the hook on that. I’ll try to look up some specific instances of that.

“Nope. Smyrna banned liquor sales in ALL strip clubs. All strip clubs were treated consistently in that regard. If you wanted to stay open you could. You just wouldn’t be selling liquor is all.”

Forgot to mention this — Smyrna also refused to issue new business licenses to strip clubs at that time — even ones that agreed to abide by the no-booze rule. So all clubs were *not* treated consistently.

“In regards to Walmart from what I understand there is usually also no Target or other super retailer in town also when people oppose a Walmart. And if there is then you won’t see me championing the cause of people who want to oppose Walmart just for the hell of it. But again I think you miss my point. At least in the case of opposing a Walmart its a good deal of the community that doesn’t want it as opposed to a single pol or a handful of pols opposing the store because of some political issue that has no bearing on that store or businesse’s effect on the community.”

I hear what you’re saying, but the fact of the matter is that pols *do* have that authority, should they choose to exercise it. Again, it can lead to lawsuits, but I think you’d be naive to think that it doesn’t, can’t or hasn’t happened before. And likely with both D and R pols doing it.

“And I still think they are wrong in doing so. I will give them one point though. In some towns Walmart has moved a store into one area of town to drive out the small businesses right around it. It will then close that store after the small businesses right there have been shuttered and reopen a store a few more miles away that’s more centralized to the town- making people drive farther away after running off those old businesses. Its an anti-competitive strategy that both cons and libs have noticed before.”

Yeah, that happened to my relatives in SE Ohio and they are PIST. Wrecked one town’s economy and now they have to drive an extra 30 miles to get to Wally World.

Laying the jokes aside for a minute (which is no easy task in this matter!), as you know, my male relatives “saw what was coming” in my formative years and found it incumbent on themselves to make sure I had the knowledge and skills to avoid that “ilk.” They made it very clear to me that keeping them at a distance was in my best interest because it wasn’t what they would do if I went along with their advances, but what they would do after I did. As Granddaddy put it, “get rid of the evidence.” He was right. A long story and won’t go into it here, but let’s just say it involves a Marine, coach-principal, and a rejection of what should have been just a pass being made by someone, given a different situation than I was in at the time, would have been tempting…

That’s still different than what I’m talking about. All new clubs are affected by the law. In the CFA example though what we’re talking about is CFA being singled out instead of for example the city declaring no new restaurants can be admitted.

Gotta admit, Depp and Burton haven’t been exactly my cup of tea (big fight there between me an Unmentionable!) Like Cruise, it depends on his vehicle. “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” is one of my favorites. The Ninth Gate was excellent but it made no money. Sweeney Todd was OK. To me, Alice stank (especially that goofy dance at the end which was obviously there to appeal to, um, whomever). Depp did a good job as Dillenger. He is a very good actor but it seems that the studios use him and his name to make big bucks on way too many mediocre films. And he is willing to oblige them.

And josef, Gilbert Grape is a classic for many, many reasons and not just because Depp was in it. He did a great job in that movie but the most endearing actors were the ones that were not big names at the time (such as the mother and the sisters) and of course, Decappio. And I’m sure I probably don’t. And most folk on here don’t know mine which is rather off the wall critical and protective at the same time. I reserve my own special criticisms for organized religion- megachurches in particular, the Catholic church’s destructive historical record in Lat. America amongst other places, televangelist phonies, and everyday church going hypocrites. And my biggest complaint with organized religion, politics, or with any mass gathering is that many people lose their individuality and critical thinking skills when in a mass gathering. They become sheep.

But at the same time I feel many of the liberal posters on here are way too quick to criticize religion and Christians in particular and we see it everyday on this blog.

… since it was him being mean to me that got him banned from here, even though I objected, the Imam didn’t see it my way…

If you’re speaking of Andy, I too argued against his ban and asked several times for his return. Maybe you were the proverbial straw, but Jay implied that it was a cumulative thingie.

Doom — “But at the same time I feel many of the liberal posters on here are way too quick to criticize religion and Christians in particular and we see it everyday on this blog.”

Well, as I said earlier, point it out to me when you think I’m doing it. I’m not saying I’m going to agree with you, because you often misread my thoughts and motives. But if you point it out, we can at least discuss it and perhaps you’ll see that while I’m an atheist, I’m not in knee-jerk opposition to religion and the practice thereof.

That said, I think you’re going to find that I personally do it a lot less than you think.

I didn’t argue pro or against that, but I see it as a case of free will. He could have abided by Jay’s rules and had no problem. He chose to do what he did, and so did Jay.

I don’t see that. What I see is criticism of HOW too many “Christians” choose to exhibit what they think is religion, but is really social attitudes.

A few weeks ago, Jay posted something that I did not know about the situation. It seems that Andy bragged that he would run Jay off like he did Luckovich (Luckovich used to run this blog before Jay took over). I had the opportunity to ask Andy about that and he readily admitted it.

I’m not sure that I could have had the restraint that Jay had.

I really don’t give a damn about who’s been banned.

Most of us here have read every iteration of every dumbass to come down the pike.

That the percentage of seniorile delinquents with anger/self-control issues are predominantly Republican, is interesting, but in and of itself, useless.

But arguably the most humorous banishment of all times belongs to the double @ miscreant. She gets the heave ho and lo and behold! Dusty and RW go the self-immolation route on her behalf.

A three for one. Hysterical.

Good riddance to bad trash…

Joe mama,

Fair enough on the Christian bashing. And don’t get me wrong. Poking a little fun at religion here and there is ok. And I’ve no problem with deserved criticism of religion such as criticism of the Catholic church’s handling of the molestation cases.

Doggone that sounds kinda subjective like you or me or scout or whoever is the authority of what constitutes religion and in this case Christianity. And religion kinda is, does, and makes a lot of our social attitutdes.

I’ve no problem with folks like yourself disagreeing with someone like Scout’s stricter interpretation of the Bible but I think ya’ll go overboard and it often turns into ridicule of what someone believes vs your definitions of interpretations of what you think religion- Christianity in particular should be. And hell for that matter I disagree vehemently with some of Scout’s interpretations but I don’t deride his views just cause I disagree with him on some of what the bible says.

Well wasn’t two boobs either shacked up with or married to RW? And Dusty was just a ditzy broad without enough sense to pour urine out of a boot if the directions were on the heel. But I didn’t know they went as a hat trick lol. I was banished at the time for making fun of them………

I didn’t realize that Andy said that until Jay posted. His abrasiveness kinda wore off on me after about my 4th month here. I kinda tuned his posts out afterwards. That said, I think Jay showed severe restraint in letting him stay around that long. I don’t usually agree with banning people, but when they are purposefully being disruptive, there’s not many other options available to restore order.
