Time to put on those travelin’ shoes and go a-fishin’

The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.

That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”

Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

Since there was no criminal intent by the man in the car, I would think the charges were dropped. No jury in the world would convict someone in that situation.

Anytime you take action of any sort, you take a risk. And sometimes you are wrong. But decisions have to be made every day. Using the facts you have at hand.

Otherwise, better just hide in your closet all day.

You may not be aware of this (I am because I have a son who is a uniformed officer) but most police department policies state that an officer should not immediately go in during an “active shooter” scenario. I know that sounds absurd but trust me on this one. They are to wait for sufficient backup and/or SWAT to arrive.

How many people can be murdered during those minutes with an officer or two hunkered down outside. It happened in Columbine and Va. Tech.

It’s always better (the odds are) if “someone” in there has the means to neutralize the perp. – stop the carnage – anything but doing nothing.

True. Nowadays, you never know what the situation is. It may be better to be a living good witness instead of another casualty because of tombstone courage.

Responding officers do not know who they are but rarely (I repeat rarely) does it end badly.

Although you state it rarely ends badly, there’s times when plain clothes and undercover officers get shot by their own colleauges in the confusion of gun battles. I know the point you’re trying to make about others responding to stop an incident, but I’ll ask you one question. If you’re the person trying to stop a shooter with the FBI HRT coming through the door, do you really want to be caught holding a gun in your hand raised in a firing position?

most police department policies state that an officer should not immediately go in during an “active shooter” scenario. I know that sounds absurd but trust me on this one. They are to wait for sufficient backup and/or SWAT to arrive.

A single officer going into an unknown situation with no idea of how many shooters or what kind of weapons has just as much of a chance to become a statistic as the ones inside the incident area. I know about your son, and I’ve also had that active shooter training. My Class III body armor does nothing to stop a round coming from any rifle. An officer running into a building where he doesn’t know where the shooter is located is at position of disadvantage, and I’m sure you remember that you always want to be at a position of advantage.

That said, I’ve had the same disagreement as you from a moral level. From a professional level, I also understand the need to not rush headfirst into a situation of which you have no idea of what’s going on.

And what if that “moron with a gun” just happens to be some disgruntled SpecOps marksman? That’s the thing about random shootings, you don’t know the ability and/or of the gunman until after the dust settles. Not only that, if you just happen to be the first victim, you probably won’t have a chance to react and go for your gun.

Situations like this have infinitely many possibilities. The only commonality is to seek cover and/or escape as quickly as possible. Then, if you’re armed, you’re better off playing Rambo from behind cover as opposed to being completely exposed.

This Colorado shooter is evidently a menses society level individual. They’ve successfully disarmed the explosives in his apartment which we’re highly sophisticated. I heard one report that indicated he’d rigged mortar rounds 60 mike mike’s or whatever in a configuration that if someone had opened the door the explosion would have taken out the entire building probably killing dozens of people. How did he get the know how and access to that type of ordinance. In Marines I had experience with C4, det cord, TNT and caps but even with military training that they say this guy never had I wouldn’t have been knowledgeable enough to put together the sophisticated booby trap that according to reports this guy did in his apartment. This is one dangerous young man that unfortunately took so many lives and seriously altered many others. Fortunately he’s in custody.

“TRUTH IS HATE TO THOSE WHO HATE TRUTH”

PULLING NO PUNCHES

“An open letter to homosexuals”

Exclusive: Matt Barber has a message for average, ordinary ‘gay’ people

“I write this not to professional homosexuals. That is to say, not to members of the well-funded, politically powerful homosexual activist lobby. They will mock and reject my words outright. They will twist and misrepresent what I say to further their own socio-political agenda. That’s fine. It’s to be expected. It merits little more than a yawn and an eye roll.

Instead, I write this to my fellow travelers in life – average, ordinary people, male and female, young and old – who happen to call themselves “gay.” I write this out of obedience to God.

It is my hope and prayer that you will consider what I have to say and take it at face value. My intentions are pure and my motives upright. If I can plant the seed of truth in just one person, and that seed begins to sprout, then I consider this letter a success.

I pray that you are that person.

What I write may offend you. It may even infuriate you. But I hope it makes you think. Know this: Your friends have lied to you. Christians do not hate you. We love you intensely. We love you because of who you are, not because of what you do or because of who you think you are.

Still, to love someone and to lie to them is to hate them – especially when that lie inevitably leads to a tragic and hopeless end.

If you have a loved one, blindfolded and running full speed toward cliff’s edge, do you not yell, stop! Would you not run after them, even tackling them if need be to prevent them from plummeting to certain death? What would we think of the person who said: “Keep running; all is well.”

All is not well, and you know it. On this path, “it” decidedly does not “get better.” It only gets worse. You will fall and you will die – perhaps not physical death, straight away – but certainly, an emotional and spiritual death. Homosexual activists, “progressives,” Hollywood, the media, academia and popular culture are telling you to keep running.

I’m yelling, stop!

Your lifestyle – homosexuality – is always and forever, objectively and demonstrably wrong. It is never good, natural, right or praiseworthy. If you have “gay pride,” you have “sin pride.” Although homosexuality is not the only sexual sin, it is, indeed, sin. Scripture is unequivocal on this fact throughout both the Old and New Testaments.

But this reality is manifest beyond the pages of Scripture. Unnatural behaviors beget natural consequences. So-called “homophobia” is not responsible for the fact that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one-in-five “gay” men and adolescents in major cities across America have been infected – through bad behavior – with HIV/AIDS.

Sin is responsible.

In almost every category – disease, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and suicide – those who call themselves “gay” live and die with consequences that have nothing gay, in the true sense of the word, about them.

Is this you? Be honest.

At least be honest with yourself.

Scripture admonishes: “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). This does not simply mean physical death, but something far worse: spiritual death.

Yes, hell.

I know from which I speak. I am no better than you. I, too, once lived a lifestyle of sexual sin. Not homosexual sin, but sexual sin nonetheless. As a young man I did not treat God’s daughters as He intended and, instead, engaged in a lifestyle of selfish womanizing and fornication.

The wages of sin in my life was death – spiritual and emotional death. I was on your same path.

But by His grace, I was offered and accepted “the free gift of God.” I, instead, was saved and given “eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Do I still struggle with sin? Of course. Every day. We all do. We are fallen. We are sinners.

Still, Christ’s gift to me was forgiveness, redemption and life everlasting. My friend, that gift is available to you as well.

Snatch it up. Please.

During the Awakening 2011 – a national conference held, that year, at Liberty University – I was visiting with a young woman from the hard-left Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). I liked her. I loved her, in fact, in the way her heavenly Father, Christ Jesus, loves her and has enabled me to love her. I think of her and pray for her often.

In recent years, the SPLC has taken to smearing Christian organizations that defend the biblical sexual ethic as “hate groups.” After visiting for a while, I asked this young woman if she really believed that we Christians hate homosexuals. To my surprise she admitted that we do not. “But the things you say are sometimes hateful,” she added.

Indeed, truth is hate to those who hate truth.

The truth is that you have immeasurable value. You are a beautiful, unique, priceless human being. The very Creator of the universe, in the person of Jesus Christ, took such an interest in you that He meticulously wove you together in your mother’s womb. He loves you with a love that no human can fully grasp. Still, this is true not because of your so-called “sexual orientation,” but, rather, in spite of it.

You are valuable and worthy of love because God created you in His image. If you define your identity based upon sexual temptations and behaviors your Creator has called sin – an “abomination” – then you are not fulfilling the purpose for which He created you. In so doing, you have become the sum total of your sins. You are in rebellion against God and you know it.

He made you to know it.

Yes, the activists tell you to take “pride” in your “sexual orientation,” but you don’t feel pride. You feel ashamed, and so you try, in vain, to numb the shame with more of the very behavior that causes it. You will never fill the void you feel with drugs, alcohol or more sexual acting-out. These things only expand your emptiness.

Christ alone can fill the void.

And He will.”

Well, heck, Scout. Let’s pray away your military. How many people have met their end because of you? But, then again, you were just following orders, weren’t you?

I never said I wouldn’t attempt to stop an active shooter. What I won’t do is barrel into the situation completely blind. I’m going to work towards a position of advantage to stop it. If that’s not possible, I will try to save as many as I can. If I allow myself to become a casualty, I’ve given the shooter another weapon to use.

I’ve been caught in crossfire before. What seems like minutes, are only seconds in reality. It’s hard to sit here and speculate on what I would do. My hope is to never have to find out in real life.

No problem with your 6:08.

I would add, the more people “in the position” to possibly stop the carnage the better.

I couldn’t be more wrong? Says you. You have every right to be as didactic and hate (yes, hate) mongering as you choose. You’ve picked gay folks, yet you and yours went out singing the hosannahs of the multi-married Gingrich without ever posting on, and on, and on about his sins against the tenets of the faith you purport to speak in the name of.

You fail to grasp that what you are promoting is exactly what has led to that lunatic in North Carolina wanting to set up concentration camps. Do I think you want that? No. But I also don’t think you are taking a Christian stand against it either and I don’t think you are taking responsibility for your own f*ggot added to the flame almost daily here.

I honestly believe that if we were ever to reach that point of round ‘em up to put them there, you’d hide me. But you’d still never take the responsibility for your own role in bringing it about. We’ve been there recently, and as you say, Never Again! Think about it…pray about it

I happen to think you are wrong but let’s assume you are correct.

What would be additionally wrong would be for me to “promote” that activity rather than just keep it to my self.

In other words, “Equal Rights for Adulterers” ! I want my girlfriend along with my wife as a deduction on my tax return ! Adulterers Pride Parades, etc., etc., etc.

0311, please don’t force me to put you back on my ignore list just when we were getting along so well. It seems to me that all & each of us have/has the right to believe we wish. It also seems to me that this blog is not the place for proselytizing, for whatever beliefs we have or do not. Okay, I guess politics is fair game, as long as we keep things fairly civil. It is my opinion that religion here should be taboo as it stirs up too much animosity, both pro & con. Just my opinion, of course.
