Time to put on those travelin’ shoes and go a-fishin’

The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.

That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”

Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

I’m thinking, like you, that there’s so much more that’ll come outta that closet in the next few weeks, that they wanted to take the first deal offered, slap their signature on it, to keep what little they have a football program intact before more information came out.

Think yer right!
I noticed, so far, the Gov of Penn came out unscathed. Hope that changes.

By Dave Zirin, The Nation July 15, 2012

(snipped)
The Governor is far from an innocent bystander. As the state’s attorney general in 2009, Corbett headed a state investigation into accusations against the revered former coach. Although his office denies it, there are multiple confirmations that Corbett assigned no one from his office to follow up on the charges: just one state trooper, a state trooper “not authorized to bring charges against Sandusky.”

In addition, when Corbett was sworn in as governor in 2011, he still had not informed Thae Second Mile Foundation that their founder was under investigation. Instead, as a candidate for governor, he took $650,000 in donations from members of the Second Mile’s unknowing board, even allowing their chairman to hold a fundraiser for his campaign. Upon being elected, Corbett then moved deftly from doing nothing to immediately try to deflect the entire weight of the scandal onto Joe Paterno and Penn State itself, using his recently appointed position as a member of the school’s Board of Trustees to do so.

DDR .. .. I don’t know. Good question.

If a hefty fine was placed, I would’ve rather have seen something like : Every child, male or female – in the nation who has been a documented victim of child abuse (not just sexual abuse) up to age 20 should be awarded FULL scholarships.

Instead, the $ will be given to charities who assist with victims. In other words, they’ll hire more people, buy some new computers, Ipads, Iphones, upgrade their offices and maybe even a few “company” cars.

I disagree with almost all of you libs. on these issues but my question to you now is where are your “leaders” who feel the same way you do ????

Headline: “Colorado attacks unlikely to affect gun laws”

“Little about the nation’s gun laws has changed in the wake of recent high-profile incidents of gun violence, and all indications are that the movie theater shooting last week in Aurora, Colo., isn’t likely to affect the gun control debate, either.

Outside of a few isolated, expected voices — primarily New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg — few political leaders have called for stronger gun laws after a massacre that left 12 dead.

White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters traveling to Aurora with President Obama on Sunday that the president “believes we need to take steps that protect Second Amendment rights of the American people but that ensure that we are not allowing weapons into the hands of individuals who should not, by existing law, obtain those weapons.”

“The president’s view is that we can take steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them under existing law,” Carney added. “And that’s his focus right now.”

Bain Capital, GOP presidential hope Mitt Romney’s firm, had bought Dade and shuttered its factory in Puerto Rico in 1998. The closings continued under Bain’s management.

It’s become a familiar tale about Romney and Bain’s business dealings. The New York Times reported that Bain pushed the profitable company into bankruptcy. The Miami Herald followed with its own chronicle of the mass layoffs and mass profits for Romney and company. The Tampa Bay Times reported that Dade had received millions in tax breaks to promote job creation in Puerto Rico one year before it closed the factory there.

Bain, of course, walked away with a huge profit. In 1999, the private equity firm grabbed $242 million after it pressured Dade to borrow more millions to buy up Bain’s shares in the company.

So many Dade workers lost their jobs — 1,700 in the United States, 850 in Miami alone — that the Bain-Dade dealings have become a symbol of corporate bloodletting and a painful memory to those who witnessed the layoffs.

That’s the Mitt that so many people remember. Mitt Romney-Chief Executive Outsourcer/Chief Information Obfuscator/Chief Operating Offshorer. Never has a more exemplary Reublican ever existed. This calls for a tax cut.

Let me get this straight now. According to those conned at Cato, outsourcing more jobs from the US has allowed US companies to create more jobs here. My only question is, where are those jobs because no one outside of Cato can seem to find them. Well, I have not checked with the Heritage Foundation or Paul Ryan. They probably know where they’re at too.

‘their “jobs” campaign promise. Too bad they didn’t warn people that they meant fewer jobs under their rule. Where are those jobs, cons.”

The new jobs died along with 30 something bills in the do nothing Dem controlled Senate.

Thulsa: The mere fact that somebody puts “Jobs” in the title of a bill designed to cut taxes or to gut a regulation doesn’t mean it is actually about creating employment for anyone. These goofs know that what they are sending over won’t pass the Senate. Why not try writing a substantive bill that could attract some support from the other side? You know, the way it used to work?

when i read some odd Obama-supporting message .. .. I don’t know what to think anymore. The man could sell some of you guys the crap out of a landfill, call it gold, and you’d buy it. Blame Bush for the first 2 years. Shift the blame to rep congress for the last 2. Blame Reagan for Penn State?

Poor cons. If only they could have convinced a few Democrats that their bills actually created a job or two… Doesn’t anyone understand that new Republican laws requiring the defunding of Planned Parenthood and criminalization of not having a live baby nine months or less after every instance of sex would create all sorts of bedroom monitor jobs. Then, there are all the new jobs created just to cover training of people in the proper use of vaginal probes…

You’re not very bright are you? There are numerous low skill mfg jobs that are better done in China or elsewhere because if they are done in the U.S. then the fact of the matter is that the company may not stay in business at all because they will not be price competitive and will be driven out of business. And they may not be able to ramp up as quickly on production lines here as they could in China due to an unlimited labor supply and lower regulatory hurdles.

But I digress. Lets take 2 companies as an example. Apple mfgs its I-phone and tablets overseas because its cheaper and ramp up assembly line times are substantially quicker due to lower regulations. The resulting increase in U.S. i-phone and I suppose I-pad tablet sales means that in the U.S. that apple has to hire more sales support staff, more direct sales people, open more Apple stores, basically they have to hire more of everything to support greater domestic sales. Why it is that people like you can’t understand this is nothing short of amazing.

In the case of GE Immelt was criticized that GE had outsourced many low end production jobs overseas and to China in particular. His argument was that while that was true that in order to keep up with increasing demand in the U.S. that GE had to hire new U.S. workers to support the sales process here in the U.S.

BOTH, I talked with one of my friends in SoCal who was at the final show of the All Starr Band Tour 2012 show at the Greek Theater on Saturday night.

How about this for a lineup on stage joining in to sing With a Little Help from my Friends?

Todd Rundgren, Steve Lukather (Toto), Greg Rollie (Santana and Journey), Richard Page (Mister Mister), Gregg Bissonette, Mark Rivera, Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton, Gary Wright, Jeff Lynne, Jack Bruce, Edgar Winter, Tal Wickenfeld, Mickey Dolenz and Jim Keltner.

That is some serious star power…

Mr_B,

I understand what you are saying but its a 2 way street. Just as you say why don’t the Rs pass a passable bill I could then say why doesn’t the D Senate quit obstructing bills that the Rs consider to be reasonable and pass them.

“Greek Theater”

I would really like to go to the Greek Theater. Billy Joel still has a pretty good voice. I’d like to see him straighten up & do a solo piano tour. Perfect venue for that!

Late breaking news… Paul Ryan has promised that his latest proposed tax cuts for the wealthiest will not cost those on social security or medicare or medicaid any more than he has promised just as soon as the unemployment rate drops to 2.8% and stays there.

Later late breaking news… Paul Ryan blames Obama for his failure to meet his target unemployment rate.
