The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.
That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”
Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

“Well Betty, you don’t think that someone buying thousands of rounds of bullets in a period of a few days might at least trigger a cursory investigation?”
How do you track it Keep?
At a shooting range, you can go through alot of rounds in only an hour.
There would be alot of federal investigating going on…for nothing.

I sure would like to trickle down on some more cons but I’m gonna need more tax cuts first. When are the cons gonna give me another tax cut. How about giving me zero income taxes on non-qualifying dividends. You can make it up by cutting medicaid and medicare and social security and federal pensions. Come on cons. Help me trickle down.

He was a doctoral student. It’s possible that he was funded through his university by some means; either by working for the school in some capacity or via scholarship/assistantship. That said, I don’t know for a fact where his money came from.

I have no way of knowing if these figures are in the ballpark, but I found this by googling “NIH grants doctoral”
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-12-033.html
If he was pursuing his PhD, then this table suggests he got about $22K. He’d probably supplement that with some sort of package from the university to cover tuition, fees and books; maybe he’d teach a freshman-level class or two in exchange for that. When I was in grad school, I taught one section per term and earned just enough to cover the cost of school. GI Bill and other jobs made up the rest of my income back then.

My thoughts on PSU (Pedophile State):
1. No one owes anything to the Penn St fans. You choose to be fans for better or worse. If you want to be angry, be angry at the administrative staff that put you in this position.
2. The Penn St fans should be ashamed for their program and should want to self impose punishment to show support for those children who had their lives forever marred.
3. It is disgusting for the fans to point the finger the other way, to cry foul, to beg for leniency. Did these little boys get the help they needed when the staff at penn st heard their cries?
4. Imagine the painful, the vile, the dark things these kids went through. To see the whites of their terrified eyes, to hear the tears and blood drip as they scream in pain. The quiver in their lips begging for mercy. To have Penn St turn their back on these kids, to throw away their lives for the sake of the program…..
And all you fans can think about is your football experience? that’s disgusting, and mimic the culture at Penn St.

I’m not saying I agree with it, but any company that has never had less revenue then they had the year before is not doing things on the fly. They made a calculated decision. Now it is time for people to decided if they want to engage in commerce with them.

PSU should not have only been fined, they should’ve been told that all football related activities will be suspended for two years.
A “LITTLE” fine is offensive. Not only to the true victims, the children, of this travesty; but to the people with children who put their trust in The Second Mile, Sandusky, JoePa, and PSU.
What does it take for this to be considered bad for you? Would it have made it better if it was girls that were molested? Cheerleaders? How about the FOOTBALL players?
When the football program allows the morals to be set aside and become bigger than the supposed work of the university, to EDUCATE, then they have to be slapped down and made to realize that they are the problem.

DDR,
Its not the entire Penn State alumni base that is at fault. More like the 3-4 people left at the top who allowed the molester to continue unabated. I’m glad Penn St got penalized hard but I think a lot of people are missing a major point which is that young men who play on the team, current and future students, businesses who depend on football saturdays, lesser sports including women’s sports that are funded by football revenues, these are all people who are paying the price for the scandal. And none of them had anything to do with the cover up. We’re punishing a lot of people who had nothing to do with it.
And on top of that Penn State lost 40 scholarships to give away to football players. That’s 40 less young men- many of them minorities, who will not get to live out the dream of playing big time college football and more importantly will be deprived of a good and most of all free education at an otherwise good school.
That being said I think the fine and the money being set aside for victim abuse is a great idea.
The one thing that I have not seen in any of this rancor is what is going to happen to the 3 men at the top who covered up the whole thing? Are they going to be criminally prosecuted or can they even be criminally prosecuted? I’ve yet to read anything on the repercussions for the 3 men left who are most culpable. Just stuff on the university itself.
I think we would be better served focusing more on the 3 men who covered everything up then punishing multitudes of people from young men trying to get scholarships to students, fans, and small businesses and employees who had absolutely nothing to do with this. And keep in mind that that football pays for all the women’s sports. Don’t be surprised if several of the women’s sports are cancelled or money spent on those programs is reduced because of reduced football revenues. The lesser sports and athletes who play those sports will also be unfairly punished.
Just my opinion that a lot of people are going to be unfairly punished for something that they had nothing to do with and that I wish there was more of a focus on punishing the 3 men left who actually did the cover up. That’s all.

For proof of exactly just what low levels network news will sink to, ABC’s reporting that the mother of James Holmes saying (early Saturday morning) that “they had the right person” is dispiccable. She knew nothing about the shooting when they called her in the early hours of Saturday and she was referring to herself. NBC, ABC, CBS, and most all of the rest of them have become nothing but tabloid networks who have no objectivity at all and are enamoured of liberalism/progressivism. They have all officially sold out. Their unwavering non-critical/non-questioning reporting of Obama should be proof enough of the deterioration of their credibility, but the Holmes story is proof positive. You can throw the NYT’s, the Washington Post and every medium sized big city newspaper in this country (including the AJC) into this unsavory pile as well. Journalism is dead and 5th branch of government no longer exists. No longer is there anywhere that the people of this country can go to find unbiased journalism to find out what is going on. Nowhere.

1) Shouldn’t Title IX be extended to professional sports? Heck, that ain’t fair to women.
2) Shouldn’t college and professional tennis have the same number of sets for men’s and women’s championships?
3) For that matter, shouldn’t one of the two U.S. senators from each state and half the Congresspersons be required to be women via Constitutional Amendment ?
I mean ……….. fair is fair.

Doom: I understand that “because that’s the way they’ve always done it” explanation but that doesn’t make the punishment right.
It makes them consistent. Question: What would’ve happened if, after decades of making the School pay for trangressions of people who had sometimes left 5 years earlier from the program; the NCAA would’ve suddenly changed their policy for Penn State?
Riddle me that one.

Don’t know if you caught Maureen Dowd’s column yesterday or not…but an interesting read,
“If I were the Decider, I’d leave it up. But I’d put up another darkly alluring statue behind Paterno, whispering in his ear: Mephistopheles”

The word PROFESSIONAL negates your whole sentence.
2) Shouldn’t college and professional tennis have the same number of sets for men’s and women’s championships?
Again, the world PROFESSIONAL negates your whole sentence.

“The next time President Obama hits the links, it will be his 100th round of golf since coming to the White House. That’s quite a milestone in just 3 1/2 years. As it takes him about six hours to drive to the greens and complete 18 holes, Mr. Obama has spent the equivalent of four months’ worth of work time golfing. Meanwhile, the U.S. economy has been stuck in a sand trap.”

Frog: I read a column today in ESPN by a writer who questioned WHY PSU signed the infraction document with such speed. I’m thinking, like you, that there’s so much more that’ll come outta that closet in the next few weeks, that they wanted to take the first deal offered, slap their signature on it, to keep what little they have a football program intact before more information came out.
Here’s an excerpt from the column:
When Penn State president Rodney Erickson signed the consent decree imposed by the NCAA, he and the school agreed not only to the punishments but also to the monitoring, the supervision and to an enforcement process. This is not just a settlement contract. It is the document that governs enforcement and provides for penalties if Penn State screws up.
These agreements are typically negotiated by two organizations in the middle of a dispute. There is no indication of a negotiation or even a minimal role by Penn State or its president and his lawyers. A typical decree would say that Penn State neither admits nor denies wrongdoing. This decree is all about wrongdoing with Penn State admitting everything.
Consent decrees are ordinarily sterile legal documents, but this one expresses outrage. The decree states the evidence against Penn State “presents an unprecedented failure of institutional integrity leading to a culture in which a football program was held in higher esteem than the values of the institution, the values of the NCAA, the values of higher education, and, most disturbingly, the values of human decency.”
Penn State did not negotiate this document. Penn State surrendered to the terms of this document.
It is possible for a wealthy alumnus, a season-ticket holder, a coach, a taxpayer or even a student-athlete to file a lawsuit challenging the sanctions and the consent decree. But any lawsuits are doomed to failure. Erickson’s signature on the consent decree means that the university has agreed to the sanctions and to be bound by them for five years.
No one has the standing or the authority to challenge what Erickson and the university have agreed to do. Penn State expressly agrees that it cannot be challenged with “judicial process.” Anyone who files a lawsuit would face not only an early dismissal of the case but also the payment of the legal fees incurred by the NCAA and Penn State as they obtain the dismissal. The lawsuit would be an expensive failure.

“What does it take for this to be considered bad for you?”
Alright now, I never said anything about it not being bad. “Bad” is very mild word. It’s beyond bad, and I’m not sure how my suggestion that those who are guilty, be held responsible. it’s the fault of very few people. It’s those few people who are responsible. It’s not the fault of the students, players, fans, or community (past, present, future,).
I even added that those who were responsible for the hiring, promoting, appointing etc…should be held accountable.
A man just recently walked into a theater and killed more than a dozen people. If I’m understanding your way of thinking, he isn’t the only one responsible for the murders. At the very least, his parents should be locked up and charged, right? How about past teachers? Shouldn’t the people who made and have made violent movies be responsible, too?
ps…I’m no college football fan. I have better things to do than sit around all day on saturdays watching that stuff. The “fine: by the NCAA doesn’t upset me at all. I just think it’s wrong…that’s all.

I figured when you had a minute you was going to post the following, but thought I would save you this post. Glad I was able to save you a minute or two.
There has been criticism of the president’s vacation at this time. But how does the number of vacation days the president has spent compare to his predecessors? CBS Radio’s Mark Knoller has kept track of presidential vacations for years and supplied the data.
So far, President Obama has taken 61 vacation days after 31 months in office. At this point in their presidencies, George W. Bush had spent 180 days at his ranch where his staff often joined him for meetings. And Ronald Reagan had taken 112 vacation days at his ranch.
Among recent presidents, Bill Clinton took the least time off — 28 days.

josef – thanks for the link. From the article:
But Freeh learned the sulfurous truth: that it was Paterno who persuaded Graham Spanier, who was the university president, Gary Schultz, a vice president, and Tim Curley, the athletic director, not to report Sandusky to state authorities. Eager to protect the brand and their cash cow, they decided to rationalize. Euphemistically, they said they wanted to do the “humane” thing; so they warned Sandusky to stop bringing children onto campus. As far as the noble coach was concerned, Sandusky could simply switch the venue of his child rapes.
Paterno, Freeh said, made “the worst mistake of his life,” committing the deadly sin of pride. After all those decades acting the part of a modest, moral man, he put his own reputation above the welfare of children. The saint in black cleats sold his soul, and Satan leads the dance.
She’s very eloquent and she nailed it on the head.

Changes:
““In the past six months Obama has been fundraising 106 times, golfing 10 times and has met with his “jobs council” …………….. ZERO times.”
My post was about fundraising and golf outings ………… not vacations.
But that said, you left this out:
“These numbers are separate from his 20 visits to Camp David spanning all or part of 48 days.”
And I don’t see (and really don’t care) any figures on the comparative costs between the presidents’ various “vacations” ………. for example going to the ranch in Texas (one’s home) vs. Martha’s Vinyard.
