The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.
That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”
Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

“any of the gun people on this forum please let me understand why it is a right to carry a weapon that can kill 100 adults or otherwise living creatures at a clip?”
It’s called the 2nd Amendment.
Let me explain.
You have also heard of the 4th, 5th and 6th amendments I am sure (the right against unreasonable searches, the right against self-incrimination and the right to an attorney).
Over the period of our nation’s history (modern history at least) thousands and thousands of violent criminals have been released or there was a failure to convict due to the application of those three Amendments. It most cases, the issue involved a mere “technicality” that allowed those individuals to be turned loose in society. As a result, innocent people have been (and are being) murdered, raped and assaulted – by the thousands. Who knows the exact figure over time but it will happen probably dozens of times somewhere today.
However, we hold those three Amendments so SACRED that we as a nation have decided to accept the consequences. In other words, we will release or fail to convict a murderer due to a technical violation of the 4th Amendment even though we know he will kill again.
The 2nd Amendment is no less SACRED. All are equal and should be equally enforced.
Just my opinion.

And now we return to the reality of the day…
Two-thirds of likely voters say the weak economy is Washington’s fault, and more blame President Obama than anybody else, according to a new poll for The Hill.
It found that 66 percent believe paltry job growth and slow economic recovery is the result of bad policy. Thirty-four percent say Obama is the most to blame, followed by 23 percent who say Congress is the culprit. Twenty percent point the finger at Wall Street, and 18 percent cite former President George W. Bush….
The saddest reality of the day:
…The poll found sharp differences in opinions along racial lines, with 94 percent of African-Americans saying Obama had taken the right actions on the economy, compared to 34 percent of white voters.
It has never been about skin color, now has it. 94 percent, 94 percent. A stunning commentary.
(The Hill poll was conducted July 9 among 1,000 likely voters, and has a 3 percentage point margin of error.)

That’s a “magazine” question separate from the gun itself. Thus far, Congress, the President and the Supreme Court are o.k. with it. I have some feelings both ways on the subject.
However, that said …………… there are many who argue the 2nd Amendment protects military style weapons in the hands of civilians. Otherwise, the true reason for the 2nd Amendment would be gutted. That’s also what the supreme court said in Miller and in Heller.
In Miller, the only reason the government COULD regulate sawed-off shotguns is because they were NOT military weapons.
The test through the years has always been what is “reasonable” and that will probably go up and down as it always has.
As I posted the other night …………. if I have to defend myself against multiple assailants in a close in area and you offer me a Glock pistol, an AR-15 (I don’t care how many rounds the magazine holds because it “will” jam) or a good shotgun (will all the rounds I can carry) ………….. I’ll take the shotgun EVERYTIME.

The 2nd ammendment gives a MILITIA the “right to keep and bear arms”. In today’s world, that would be the Military, and by extension, our POlice. It does NOT give civilians that right. Anyone who can understand American history and plain English can see that. Those who see it otherwise are, for the most part, people so attached to guns that they purposely distort our Constitution.

On June 26, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 5-4 opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller. Justice Scalia, writing for the majority, held that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess handguns for use in self-defense in a person’s home. However, he stressed that this right is not unlimited.
Although the Court split 5-4 on the whether the right granted by the Second Amendment is tied to militia service, all nine Justices agreed that a wide variety of gun laws are presumptively lawful. The Court listed many types of laws that would not be barred by the Second Amendment and stated that this list does not purport to be exhaustive.
•Bans on gun possession by dangerous persons such as felons and the mentally ill
•Laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings
•Laws imposing conditions and qualifications on gun sales, which could include background checks, licensing, and limits on bulk sales of handguns
•Prohibitions on carrying concealed weapons
•Prohibitions on dangerous and unusual weapons, such as machineguns and military-style semiautomatic assault weapons
•Safe storage laws to prevent gun accidents.

Uh oh! Romney’s past comments come back to haunt him!
Mitt Romney has criticized President Obama for his “you didn’t build that line,” when it came to businesses. The president was making an “it takes a village” argument, which the Romney campaign and conservatives have roundly panned.
But in 2002, during his speech at the Opening Ceremonies at the Winter Olympics — the games in which Romney was lauded for turning around the management of the event — Romney made a similar argument about Olympians.
“You Olympians, however, know you didn’t get here solely on your own power,” said Romney, who on Friday will attend the Opening Ceremonies of this year’s Summer Olympics. “For most of you, loving parents, sisters or brothers, encouraged your hopes, coaches guided, communities built venues in order to organize competitions. All Olympians stand on the shoulders of those who lifted them. We’ve already cheered the Olympians, let’s also cheer the parents, coaches, and communities. All right! [pumps fist].”

Thank you for that. FYI, that poll wasn’t conducted by The Hill. It was conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, which is a spinoff outfit spawned by Rasmussen.
I’m looking through the data returns to see if there’s anything about the methodology in there, but given that POR = Rasmussen, I doubt I’ll find anything. That said, given that Gallup’s standard MOE for a nationwide poll with a sample size of ~1000 is +/- 4%, I think that Pulse Opinion Research might be engaging in a bit of wishful thinking.

Furthermore, as far as discrediting goes, well, Rasmussen already did that with their 2010 results; including the single most *incorrect* result in modern polling history. If you’re credulous enough to believe that a brand-new polling outfit is an entire order of magnitude more accurate than Gallup is, then the issue is yours, not mine, and the issue is uninformed credulity, not informed accuracy.

All guns laws need strict enforcement (as do any U.S. laws) …………… some loopholes need to be closed and in other states laws need to be liberalized (i.e., Illinois needs to have a reasonable requirement for carry permits).

“Why don’t you see if you can play ……………. honestly today.”
Just remember your post from yesterday regarding “5,000 criminal gun toters in Texas” if you want to talk honesty.
IN OTHER WORDS, CONCEALED WEAPONS PERMIT HOLDERS (IN TEXAS) ARE CONVICTED OF A CRIME AT A RATE THAT IS A TINY FRACTION OF THAT OF THE GENERAL POPULATION’S.
“Assuming the search is for the “percentage of concealed weapons permit holders who commit crimes in any given year,” the only complete database is from Texas, which has a database showing the number of individuals who are convicted of a crime with the percentage of CCW permit holders who are convicted.(pdf)
That is, if there were 1,000 crime X’s during a year, and two of those convicted were CCW holders, the percentage is 0.0020. If you click on the link above, you will find that for most crimes the percentage is a whopping 0.0000%.
That does not mean that a Concealed Weapons Permit holder never commits a crime. For 3,680 persons convicted of “aggravated assault” during 2009, just 8 had a CCW. That is a whopping 0.0022 percent of those convicted of aggravated assault.
There were 1,913 robbery convictions, none by a CCW holder, for a 0.0000% rate.
And the overall rate for the 65,541 individuals who were convicted of some crime during 2009 was a whopping 0.1541 percent. Many of those were relatively minor “slips of the mind,” carrying a gun into a bottle shop, for example.
For Texas overall, just 0.002654 percent of the population was convicted of a crime during 2009. In more familiar terms, Texas had a conviction rate of 265.5 per 100,000 population. Concealed Weapons Permit holders had a conviction rate of 0.408 per 100,000 population.
In other words, Concealed Weapons Permit holders are convicted of a crime at a rate that is a tiny fraction of that of the general population’s.
Incomplete data from other states strongly suggest that Texas experience is either typical or a bit high. But Concealed Weapons Permit holders are an extremely peaceful lot.”

Many who face fallic inadequatecy will go to any lengths, so to speak, to compensate for this. They will gladly trample over the legitimate meaning of the 2nd ammendment to compensate for their failings by demanding the right to keep and bear arms. Lawmakers will gladly go along with this to keep their corporate masters happy. Weapons manufacturers are happy to ignore the constitution because of their crazed greed for more and more profit.
The net result of this is an average of 30,000 gun deaths in America every year.

Scout, repeated posting of blog that shows that TX CWH that undergo a criminal history background check and monitors those licensed to ensure their continued eligilibity is below the “general population” and yet still has a number of people that are convicted, demonstrates that doing background checks and monitoring helps but does not eliminate all violations and thus in and of itself is not fully adequate. We’ll never get perfectiion.
I am all for full background checks, waiting periods and monitoring as well as licenses and I agree with you to support those sensible changes…. including requiring that at gun shows and not merely for concealed weapons. See, we can agree.

Kammie, do you want to argue about the shape of the table next?
I’m not “arguing” anything.
I asked a simple question.
You unequivocally stated, “We all admit.”
I want to know who granted you that authority.
So, who was it?

the problem with that is what a liberal thinks is sensible is nowhere near what a conservative thinks is sensible and the outcom of any chanes would not likely be considered sensible by one or both
Yep, wingnuts and the NRA will never see sensible when they see conspiracies in everything and everything is evidence of the conspiracy (ask the “birthers” about “sensible” –
) ….. however the majority of Americans can agree on a range of sensible laws. Now we may have some minor differences but let’s be clear, I doubt there is anything that the NRA proposes that would be in the “sensible range”….

Actually, it a puerile little linguistic trick that works on them, so in a display of “monkey hear, monkey do” they repeat it elsewhere, but they’re not prepared to deal with challenge to a supposed authority.

In this heat, I’d suggest one of those frosty tea-and-juice drinks they offer. But a decaf granita would do the trick too.

That’s cute. We’re discussing gun control issues and have Joe arguing whether the MOE is accurate in some study and kammie arguing about whether or not a meaningless comment not even the focus of my post is 100% accurate.
And you want people to take you seriously????

I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess what’s in them. IMO, it’s one or both of two things.
1) Last week, someone from the campaign said (I think this was on Morning Joe) ‘no, he did not pay zero taxes in any year.’ I think that’s kind of a non-denial denial (especially since no one on the show had asserted or asked if he had paid zero), so I think he’s going to show either an abnormally LOW amount of tax due (maybe due to offsetting capital losses in 2008 and 2009) . . .
2) . . . or a REFUND (for the same reasons). Being a millionaire and getting a tax refund when workers all about you are losing their jobs would be hell of a thing for any candidate to have to talk his way out of.

That Colorado kook appeared in court today with orange hair….. said he was tired. Sort of looked like a Wall Street protestor. Every liberal talking head is trying to connect this idiot with the Tea Party but it doesn’t seem to be working. He just doesn’t seem to look like some old grey haired, brown shirt Nazi with a lawn chair, now does he?
