The first time I saw the great Elvin Bishop, we were both younger men. It was back in the early ’70s, in Raleigh, N.C., right about the time he put out his excellent and underrated album “Let It Flow.” Looking through the song list from that album — “Travelin’ Shoes,” “Stealin’ Watermelons” — is like going back in time.
That album also included Elvin’s classic celebration of fishing, the aptly titled “Fishin’.” It’s a critically important theme, so important that Mr. Bishop felt obligated to revisit it at more length in a later song, the equally aptly titled “Gone Fishin’ Again,” as in “me and my no-good friends are gone fishin’ again.”
Which of course we are. See ya’ll back here in a couple of weeks. Be good, be cool and be wishin’ you were with us, ‘cuz we plan on having us a damn good time.

It is a convenient time to leave, since your bosses will be having a hard time dealing with the facts for a few days—and you won’t be forced to lie as Luckovich did this morning. My husband shares your love of fishing and has been able to do so all over the country. So that is something we have in common. Have a good time, be safe, and catch and fry up some good ones.

Well, there is something both sides on the aisle can agree upon. Fishing. Some of my best fishing memories were of summers at lakes up in Northern Minnesota and the Boundry Waters. The serenity up there is unbelieveable, uncongested and the next best thing to the wild of Alaska. If I had your money JB, that’s where I’d spend my summers on a yearly basis, and if I could, I’d do my best to rent you a cabin for the winter up yonder. Hope you get your limit of Carp…

Good choice.
Decades of de-sensitizing the American people to violent imagery by Hollywood has once again created another monster. The idolization of psychos by Hollywood is now just good business for them. The devil is now the hero in the garbage they put out. The more extreme and un-stable the villain, the more young Americans adore them. What has happened to people? Guns don’t fire themselves, knives don’t walk off the table and stab people and bombs don’t detonate themselves. We have fooled ourselves into thinking that death and destruction can be eliminated by getting rid of a few things that can be used to reek them but the truth is their are untold numbers of ways to kill. And they cannot all be regulated away. Something is very, very wrong with the inner workings of our society. Violence is a staple of the American diet now. Children are weened on it. Video games they play are full of it. They kill in virtual reality and they themselves feel no pain or guilt. Sad, very sad.

heathen, I found the lyrics, but not the song. (I think.).
Well I hate to say the farmer
Was the last of a dying breed
Living off the land
And taking what he needs
Don’t say much for the future
When a family can’t survive
I’d hate to say the farmer
Was the last of his kind.
In the struggle for parity
Not one man’s voice can sound
Cause the foundation of the conglomerate Is firmly in the ground.
Yeah, they want to feed the world
But for power and for greed
Then they’ll cut off the supply
Until they get what they need.
Well I dreamed I saw a dust bowl
Where the farmers used to live
Earth was flying through the sky
It had nothing left to give
Tractors were burning
On the Whitehouse lawn
Just woke up one morning
And the farmers all were gone
