So is there a Plan B should metro Atlanta reject the one-penny sales tax for transportation?
Theoretically, sure there is. State law says regional leaders can propose another list of projects to voters in two years, when many who oppose the current list argue that a “better” list would be more likely to win voter approval.
That’s wishful thinking. The same political forces that produced a list that is too heavy on transit to some, and too light on transit to others, will still be in play come 2014, and at best will produce a list much like this one.
Besides, let’s be honest: Most who oppose this T-SPLOST would also oppose any future tax increase for transportation. Their opposition is based not on these specific projects but on the idea of a transportation tax increase, period. That will not change.
And frankly, I doubt that two years from now, public officials would be able to agree on any list at all. As highly politicized and contentious as this process has become, elected local officials will be much less willing to engage again in the give-and-take that was necessary to produce the current list, and much more likely to grandstand in defense of their own small corner of the region.
For example, even if Cobb County Chairman Tim Lee survives his current primary challenge, I doubt he’ll be willing to stick his neck out once again on behalf of regional projects. If Lee does not survive, his fate will become an object lesson for other local officials. The spirit of cooperation that allowed regional leaders to support the current list unanimously will never be recaptured should voters reject this plan.
And of course, if the measure does fail, it won’t be hard to find people to blame. Near the top of the list will be former Gov. Sonny Perdue, who year after year told Georgia to Go Fish rather than focus on transportation, and who in the end left us this convoluted funding mechanism as his legacy.
In his last days in office, Perdue also broke the state’s longstanding pledge not to extend tolls on Georgia 400, shattering what was left of public faith that political leaders will keep their word on such issues. And while Gov. Nathan Deal’s announcement this week that he would end the extended tolls at the end of 2013 explicitly acknowledges the damage done by Perdue’s move, it may have come too late.
Fingers will also be pointed at state legislative leaders, who shucked off responsibility for making tough decisions onto local leaders, then sat back and in some cases took potshots at what those local elected leaders decided.
In the end, though, the failure will be our own. This will be the first time in the history of the Atlanta region that it has the chance to actually debate, vote and act as a region. Defeat would mean that we failed that test. It would mean that voters inside the perimeter became too concerned that voters outside the perimeter might be getting a better deal, and vice versa, and that voters in general lacked faith in their public institutions to perform what is really a very basic function of government.
And if we prove to have no faith in our leaders or institutions, why should outsiders looking to invest time, energy and money have that faith either?

Congestion could be eliminated if everyone would just stay home and blog and leave the streets to me and ice cream trucks.
Every time there is a tragedy such as the shooting at Virginia Tech or the theater in Colorado political vultures descend trying to score points for their side instead of just mourning the dead. So we are being told that the shooter at the movie was a Tea Party member while others are claiming that he was a registered Democrat. He isn’t important. The people who died are. Give it a rest.

What I find offensive is people who claim to be Christian and who think that the government should be completely excluded from the goal of helping the poor, the sick, and the elderly, as well as thinking that Jesus supported gun rights somehow. I grew up Christian, and Jesus was about kindness, helping the poor and the elderly and the sick, and about non-violent action.
No one really knows what he would say about guns, but I can say for sure that simply having one on your person is much more likely, statistically, to DECREASE your chances of survival in a violent encounter than it is to increase your chances. This is a FACT that many pro-gun people ignore, presumably because they think if they admit that one little thing somehow the entire 2nd amendment will be instantly deleted from the Constitution.

If a person spends $1,000 monthly in Fulton Couny (8%) they can buy $920 worth of merchandise.
If TSPLOST passes in Fulton County (9%) they can purchase $910 worth of merchandise.
That is $10 less in purchasing power per month. It is $120 less in purchasing power per year.

Charles Douglas Edward – good point. I want to add to your statement. I you earn $1000 working, you pay an average fed and state tax of 32% which would be $680 left to spend. Now take that and everything you buy is now at 9 cents taxed you lose another $60 bucks leaving you $620 to spend. Then you also have to take into consideration all of the hidden taxes in the products we buy. After you factor that in, you are left with about half what you started with. Sucks doesn’t it? Between 2004 and 2006, when subprime lending was exploding, Fannie and Freddie went from holding a high of 48 percent of the subprime loans that were sold into the secondary market to holding about 24 percent, according to data from Inside Mortgage Finance, a specialty publication. One reason is that Fannie and Freddie were subject to tougher standards than many of the unregulated players in the private sector who weakened lending standards, most of whom have gone bankrupt or are now in deep trouble.
During those same explosive three years, private investment banks — not Fannie and Freddie — dominated the mortgage loans that were packaged and sold into the secondary mortgage market. In 2005 and 2006, the private sector securitized almost two thirds of all U.S. mortgages, supplanting Fannie and Freddie, according to a number of specialty publications that track this data.

Uh, no. You are mistaken. That is NOT according to the report. That is according to a Republican Congressman REACTING to the report.

Oh brave brave Sir Scout…. what no link to support your claim about a Ft Hood report? The actual report itself not some wingnut recap.
But I am sure Steve will be calling you out for your lack of class with your post.
Finally, it’s too bad that an off-duty officer or legal gun toter wasn’t available to end the carnage.
So I guess those 2 AF reservists and a Navy service member that were injured were not carrying? No one in the theatre was? Perhaps your political spiking of the ball with NRA nonsense remains premature.
Let me suggest that everyone follow the words of the President: He called for reflection after the attack. “There are going to be other days for politics,” Obama said during an abbreviated appearance in Fort Myers, where he led a moment of silence on behalf of the victims and their families.

Is there a “fight” song? I would have thought that fighting implied desire, which is a roadblock to enlightenment.

Whether or not he fell through the cracks before this incident or whether or not someone in the theater was “carrying” has nothing to do with politics. Facts are facts.
What will be interesting is to see what transpired in his life for the several years leading up to this. His mother indicated almost immediately she knew it must be him …………… that presupposes a long, ongoing problem. Who was previously involved? What were the signs? Should someone have intervened but didn’t? All of these are valid questions.

“They will know we are Christians by our guns by our guns”
Or:

No wonder it’s a dieing belief system.

Scouty, again, you put forth a bunch of crap without facts. Now you want to claim “legimate questions”. Your analysis is just scummy and factless spin and projection. Why don’t you simply man up and leave it alone until the facts are out before you spin wildly with your partisan NRA nonsense.
To those with family members and friends that happen to live in that area, including some of us who are still trying to locate them, it is offensive.
