In the health-care debate, we’ve all watched as the proudest single accomplishment of a self-described “severely conservative” Republican governor has somehow been transformed into proof of Marxist intent once that same plan was adopted by a Democratic president.
It’s political alchemy at its best. In fact, as testimony to the power of propaganda, that one’s hard to beat. It reminds us that if people really want to believe something — even something manifestly ridiculous, illogical and countermanded by facts — they will still find a way to do so.
But this example of that same phenomenon comes in a close second:
“Gun sales are soaring nationwide and retailers say that’s not unusual to see during a presidential election year. “Basically the situation you have now is 2008 all over again,” said Steven B. Drew, owner of Georgia Gun and Loan.
Analysts say the 2008 spike came from fear that new gun control legislation would make it more difficult to acquire firearms. “People were uncertain what the new president and the new administration was going to do so there tends to be a upsurge in fire arm sales in general,” said Drew.
Now, they are seeing it all over again. “A lot of people got guns and they certainly don’t want to be without ammo. If they think they are going to cut back on the ammunition they are going to stock pile it so they wont be out,” said Jackie Sizemore, the owner of Backwoods Outdoors.
Sizemore says his store has been busy. He’s constantly having to re-order guns and ammo to keep supplies on the shelves. “You’ll be out of a lot of goods, people will be waiting on a lot of stuff ,” he said.
Weapons like pistols and tactical weapons like AR-15s.
“Those are what you will find on the chopping block first they will do away with tactical type guns like that and high capacity magazines stuff like that,”he said.
In fact, Sizemore says he can barely keep AR-15s on the shelf. “Everybody will be out of AR 15s. You won’t be able to find them anywhere,” he said.

A screen-grab from the NRA's "gunbanobama.com" website.
As I’ve noted earlier, we’ve been through this before. During the 2008 campaign, Wayne LaPierre and the NRA warned gun owners that Barack Obama had a 10-point plan to confiscate all of their guns and ammunition.
Point One was supposed to be a federal ban on the use of guns for home defense. Point Three was a ban on the sale, manufacture and possession of handguns. Point Four was the closure of 90 percent of American gunshops. Federal taxes on guns and ammunition were supposed to go up 500 percent, and the sale of ammunition for hunting rifles was supposed to be banned altogether.
And of course, none of that ever happened. It was all tinfoil-hat stuff, manufactured to part the gullible from their money, and it worked spectacularly well. Based on a completely fabricated threat, the NRA and its sponsors in the gun industry terrified the suckers into buying huge quantities of the gun industry’s products. Ka-ching!
Now, you might think that people who get fooled so badly would learn a lesson from that humiliation. They might get wary of those who had played them for dummies. But once again, such thinking fails to account for the fact that sometimes people just want to be fooled, and if people want to be played for suckers there is no way on earth to help them.
Consider, if you will, LaPierre’s explanation for why that 10-point plan was never implemented. He now argues that the fact that Obama has done nothing regarding gun control — the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has even given Obama an “F” rating — in fact proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’s a sinister gun-grabber.
And yes, that is actually the argument that they are using. And yes, that is the argument that is driving gun owners into the stores to buy still more guns. Like people lining up for a rollercoaster ride, they are scared because they want to be scared and, I suspect, even enjoy it at some level.
And the people scaring them are chuckling all the way to the bank.

Does anyone really think having stricter gun control will keep guns out of kids’ possession? Really! It is no secret Jay that the left would love to have stricter gun control so basically you are saying much that could also apply to the left, i.e., “In fact, as testimony to the power of propaganda, that one’s hard to beat. It reminds us that if people really want to believe something — even something manifestly ridiculous, illogical and countermanded by facts — they will still find a way to do so.” A statement that can also be made about the left!!! Consider this, if you will, Mr. Bookman.
Your side represents left wing kooks, elitists, geeks, academics, pacifists, and sissies afraid of guns. I’m sure I will get a reaction from your litte sharks, but it is what it is.
After your group hijacked this country via misinformation and low class propaganda in the last election, the pragmatic majority bought weapons and ammo as a knee-jerk reaction to what happened. Your liberal bunch in the Democrat Party has tried gun control for decades, but has failed. To a limited effect you all were successful in the sordid Clinton regime of banning magazines over the 10 round capacity and assault rifles. This liberal law was finally sun-setted in the Bush years.
Hillary Clinton has endorsed the UN’s proposal for gun control and we are quite aware of your intentions to levy a gun control law if the time is right for your success.
That time would be right if Obama was to be elected for 4 more years and the Senate and House would gain more Democrats. Since Obama would not have to worry about reelection, he and his troop of liberals would seize the moment with gun control.
We are hardly suckers, chump. We are pragmatists who know full well how you kooks think.
Besides, all this weapons and ammo selling is good for American business. Something that liberals know nothing about. This economy run by the contraints of Democrat government control is proof in the pudding.
This silly little essay of yours this morning only makes sense to your dedicated chior, preacher.

Adding to my previous post, another false excuse Mr. Romney is using to avoid releasing his tax returns is that John Kerry had only released two years of returns in 2004. This is not true. As in “pants on fire” false. John Kerry released his tax returns every time he ran for Massachusetts Senator. By the time he ran for President, he had already released 20 years worth of returns. As former Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney should know this for a fact.

Jay, since I have been visiting your blog I have learned a thing or two from you, mostly about economics, plus I can see where you most often do your homework before writing be it sometimes skewed by your idiology. But on this matter, you are all wrong.
The only, and I mean only reason there has not been changes in gun ownership is the grass roots up opposition that Obama cannot overcome. There may not be that many court decisions, etc, but there has been sufficient other Constitutional rights cases that he can see this one is unwinnable – except
If somehow Obama can get the UN Arms treaty approved by the Senate, he will at least partially accmplish some of his goal. If this was not the case, the US would not be participating in authoring the treaty.
I know the preface of the treaty references no conflict with our Second Amendment, but the preface is not the treaty.
There is absolutely no doubt that if Obama and the anti-gun portion of his base were to have their way, Americans would be stripped of most if not all their firearms.
Lastly, Obama is a Socialist. He is close to being a Marxist. If he had his way, he would be our last President. To take over a country, the first thing you do is take the weapons. There is a lot of history to suppport this theory. Call it tin foil hat. Call it what you will. But there are more people who believe it than there are hard Lefties. And no, I don’t have a link for all you doubters, but all you have to do is look to the Wisconsin recall results to see the power of the NRA and gun lobbies.

You’ve made an unsupportable claim and haven’t even tried to support it. What’s to dodge? (pointing, laughing)

You’re not worth any additional effort, at least not until you actually come up with an argument.

“I would ask a conservative how they are for the death penalty but against a woman’s choice. Not one person has been able to provide an answer.”
That’s an easy one – the unborn child is completely innocent; the death penalty recipient has been vetted to the best of our abilities, time and time again, and found to have demonstrated no redemable quality that justifies continued existence.

the cat- Most cons have death penalty inmates on a express lane and then refuse to allow a woman her own choice.
I think the real crime is keeping people on death row for years. I have no problem with choice, but am against the late term stuff. With modern technology, I think we should be able to save the fetis and get rid of it’s stupid incubator at that point.

The question was raised as to why a person who has a job and pays taxes would vote for a democrat (or liberal). I have a job and pay taxes, and I intend to vote democrat for three major reasons.
1. Since 1928 there have been three stock market crashes – 1929, 1987, and 2007/8. All three occurred with republicans living in the white house. I do not like stock market crashes, so I don’t support the idea of republicans living in the white house.
2. Since 1928 there have been three financial crises – the banking crisis of 1930/31, the savings & loan crisis of the 1980s, and the banking crisis of 2007-2008. All three crises started with a republican living in the white house. I do not like financial crises, so I don’t support the idea of republicans living in the white house.
3. Since 1928 the stock market has gained over 12,800 points while democrats were living in the white house and has a net loss while republicans were living in the white house. I prefer it when the stock market goes up, so I prefer a democrat living in the white house.
There are other reasons, but these are three economic reasons that I prefer to have a democrat living in the white house.

I prefer Chris Rock’s plan:
I think we need some bullet control. I think every bullet should cost five thousand dollars. Five thousand dollars for a bullet. Know why? Cos if a bullet cost five thousand dollars, there’d be no more innocent by-standers. That’d be it. Some guy’d be shot you’d be all ‘Dang, he must’ve done something, he’s got fifty thousand dollars worth of bullets in him!’ And people’d think before they shot someone ‘Man I will blow your head off, if I could afford it. I’m gonna get me a second job, start saving up, and you a dead man. You’d better hope I don’t get no bullets on lay-away!’ And even if you get shot you wouldn’t need to go to the emergency room. Whoever shot you’d take their bullet back. ‘I believe you got my property?’

The second ammendment authorizes a milita to keep and bear arms. At the time it was written, there was no standing professional Military as we have now. Citizen soldiers were the military. So, the Constitution authorizes our Military, any by extension, our Police, to keep and bear arms. It does NOT authorize civilians not in the military or police to keep and bear arms.

That is a popular argument. However, the Surpreme Court does not except it. Neither does the vast majority of Americians.
It’s not possible to say for sure what the authors of the Constition would think about citizens bearing arms in this day and age. I think they would still be in favor of it.
But trying to guess what they would now think is nothing but speculation.
They expected us to construct the kind of government we want now, that’t why they allowed for amendments to the constitution. Not to be governed by what we thought they would have wanted.

I’ve found no such quality in you, how about that?
People don’t have to justify their “continued existence” in our society. I don’t know what you do for a living, but it’s pretty clear that you operate in some sort of emotional/mental shoot-from-the-hip haze that doesn’t admit for very much attention to anything else.

By your own logic, you have repeatedly dodged clarifying your question because you won’t respond to me. Get over yourself.
I’m not dodging your question. I’m trying to get at why — if you think there are multiple factors that go into selecting the person for whom *you* will vote — you would demand that Democrats only consider *one* factor. That’s what your original question asked.
You need to pay closer attention to detail, Punkin.
“Where’s the obama love?”
Where’s the vaunted conservative wisdom and sense of fair play? If you’re going to stack the deck with the question and refuse to clarify yourself, then why should I play in your ballpark? You said it was a serious question, and I said that I didn’t believe you. The way it’s turning out, I was exactly right — you weren’t serious at all.
