NRA, gun industry once again mine profit from paranoia

In the health-care debate, we’ve all watched as the proudest single accomplishment of a self-described “severely conservative” Republican governor has somehow been  transformed into proof of Marxist intent once that same plan was adopted by a Democratic president.

It’s political alchemy at its best. In fact, as testimony to the power of propaganda, that one’s hard to beat. It reminds us that if people really want to believe something — even something manifestly ridiculous, illogical and countermanded by facts — they will still find a way to do so.

But this example of that same phenomenon comes in a close second:

“Gun sales are soaring nationwide and retailers say that’s not unusual to see during a presidential election year. “Basically the situation you have now is 2008 all over again,” said Steven B. Drew, owner of Georgia Gun and Loan.

Analysts say the 2008 spike came from fear that new gun control legislation would make it more difficult to acquire firearms. “People were uncertain what the new president and the new administration was going to do so there tends to be a upsurge in fire arm sales in general,” said Drew.

Now, they are seeing it all over again. “A lot of people got guns and they certainly don’t want to be without ammo. If they think they are going to cut back on the ammunition they are going to stock pile it so they wont be out,” said Jackie Sizemore, the owner of Backwoods Outdoors.

Sizemore says his store has been busy. He’s constantly having to re-order guns and ammo to keep supplies on the shelves. “You’ll be out of a lot of goods, people will be waiting on a lot of stuff ,” he said.

Weapons like pistols and tactical weapons like AR-15s.

“Those are what you will find on the chopping block first they will do away with tactical type guns like that and high capacity magazines stuff like that,”he said.

In fact, Sizemore says he can barely keep AR-15s on the shelf. “Everybody will be out of AR 15s. You won’t be able to find them anywhere,” he said.

A screen-grab from the NRA's "gunbanobama.com" website.

A screen-grab from the NRA's "gunbanobama.com" website.

As I’ve noted earlier, we’ve been through this before. During the 2008 campaign, Wayne LaPierre and the NRA warned gun owners that Barack Obama had a 10-point plan to confiscate all of their guns and ammunition.

Point One was supposed to be a federal ban on the use of guns for home defense. Point Three was a ban on the sale, manufacture and possession of handguns. Point Four was the closure of 90 percent of American gunshops. Federal taxes on guns and ammunition were supposed to go up 500 percent, and the sale of ammunition for hunting rifles was supposed to be banned altogether.

And of course, none of that ever happened. It was all tinfoil-hat stuff, manufactured to part the gullible from their money, and it worked spectacularly well. Based on a completely fabricated threat, the NRA and its sponsors in the gun industry terrified the suckers into buying huge quantities of the gun industry’s products. Ka-ching!

Now, you might think that people who get fooled so badly would learn a lesson from that humiliation. They might get wary of those who had played them for dummies. But once again, such thinking fails to account for the fact that sometimes people just want to be fooled, and if people want to be played for suckers there is no way on earth to help them.

Consider, if you will, LaPierre’s explanation for why that 10-point plan was never implemented. He now argues that the fact that Obama has done nothing regarding gun control — the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has even given Obama an “F” rating — in fact proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’s a sinister gun-grabber.

And yes, that is actually the argument that they are using. And yes, that is the argument that is driving gun owners into the stores to buy still more guns. Like people lining up for a rollercoaster ride, they are scared because they want to be scared and, I suspect, even enjoy it at some level.

And the people scaring them are chuckling all the way to the bank.

In July, a federal judge in Florida permanently blocked an NRA-backed Florida law that threatened to strip doctors of their medical licenses if they warned patients about the proven risks of guns in the home. The court ruled that the law violates the First Amendment because it interferes with truthful speech about the dangers of easy access to guns.

Because in NRA land, the 2d amendment trumps the 1st and because no one should have the information to make an intelligent decision…. The NRA will lead the lemmings!

A federal judge in Texas agreed with the Brady Center’s legal briefs and threw out an NRA-supported challenge to the Obama Administration’s Mexico gun trafficking rule requiring that gun shops along the Mexico border report bulk high-powered rifle sales to law enforcement.

This victory exposes the lie behind the gun lobby’s claims that it wants to enforce the laws on the books, and it reveals the gun lobby hypocrisy over their feigned indignation about Attorney General Holder and the Fast and Furious controversy. The gun lobby wants to keep law enforcement from cracking down on gun trafficking to Mexico because it jeopardizes gun industry profits, and this ruling is a sharp blow to gun industry’s efforts to keep profiting off sales to traffickers.

OMG, you mean that the conned poutrage over Fast and Furious, spurred by the lies of the NRA guppies, could be feigned?

Bachmann does this creation of fear and rakes in political donations. This one’s for you, MiltonMan. You party pooper:

Virtually every gun starts out as a legally manufactured product, but the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) points to three common ways guns move from legal distribution channels to the criminal market:
•Corrupt federally licensed gun dealers: Federally licensed gun dealers send more guns to the criminal market than any other single source. Nearly 60% of the guns used in crime are traced back to a small number—just 1.2%—of crooked gun dealers. Corrupt dealers frequently have high numbers of missing guns, in many cases because they’re selling guns “off the books” to private sellers and criminals. In 2005, the ATF examined 3,083 gun dealers and found 12,274 “missing” firearms.
•Straw purchasing: Straw purchasing is the most common way criminals get guns, accounting for almost 50% of trafficking investigations. A straw purchaser is someone with a clean record who buys guns on behalf of someone legally prohibited from possessing guns. Straw purchasers are often the friends, relatives, spouses or girlfriends of prohibited purchasers. The two Columbine High School shooters recruited friends to buy guns for them at Colorado gun shows. One of the buyers admitted she would not have bought the guns if she had been required to submit to a background check.
•Gun Shows and private gun sales: Gun shows have been called “Tupperware parties for criminals” because they attract large numbers of prohibited buyers. A loophole in federal law allows unlicensed or “private” sellers, many of whom work out of gun shows, to lawfully sell or transfer guns without conducting a criminal background check. Gun show dealers have been known to advertise to criminals with signs that read “no background checks required here.”

So, using your logic, (1) The FEDERALLY licensed gun dealers = all cons; (2) Straw purchaser is a liberal who convinces his con friends to buy guns from a con dealer; (3)Criminals are libs who buy their guns at gun shows from cons. So the ATF agents in Fast & Furious were all libs who were forced to buy guns from all cons who also forced them to “hand-over” said guns to libs in Mexico.

NIGHT WATCHMAN

Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert.

Congress said, “Someone may steal from it at night.”

So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job.

Then Congress said, “How does the watchman do his job without instruction?”

So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies.

Then Congress said, “How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?”

So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people. One was to do the studies and one was to write the reports.

Then Congress said, “How are these people going to get paid?”

So they created two positions: a time keeper and a payroll officer then hired two people.

Then Congress said, “Who will be accountable for all of these people?”

So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal Secretary.

Then Congress said, “We have had this command in operation for one year and we are $918,000 over budget, we must cut back.”

So they laid-off the night watchman.

NOW slowly, let it sink in.

Quietly, we go like sheep to slaughter. Does anybody remember the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY during the Carter administration?

Anybody?

Anything?

No?

Didn’t think so!

Bottom line is, we’ve spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency, the reason for which very few people who read this can remember!

Ready??

It was very simple… and at the time, everybody thought it very
appropriate.

The Department of Energy was instituted on 8/04/1977, TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.

Hey, pretty efficient, huh???

AND NOW IT’S 2012 — 35 YEARS LATER — AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS “NECESSARY” DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR. IT HAS 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES ANDAPPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES; AND LOOK AT THE JOB IT HAS DONE!

(THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY, “WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?”)
34 years ago 30% of our oil consumption was foreign imports. Today 70% of our oil consumption is foreign imports.

Ah, yes — good old Federal bureaucracy.

NOW, WE HAVE TURNED OVER THE BANKING SYSTEM, HEALTH CARE, AND THE AUTO INDUSTRY TO THE SAME GOVERNMENT?

Hello!! Anybody Home?

Signed….

It’s political alchemy at its best. In fact, as testimony to the power of propaganda, that one’s hard to beat. It reminds us that if people really want to believe something — even something manifestly ridiculous, illogical and countermanded by facts — they will still find a way to do so.
++++
One man’s propaganda is another man’s truths. There is a big difference between doing something at the state level and doing something at a national level. For one the people of Mass probably favor the legislation while nationally people don’t. Also, Obama criticised Hillary for manadates. All politicians are flip floppers.

If Obama could not do it with 60 Dem Senators and a majority in the house then I don’t think there is much of a threat now.

I hope you are right. However this president has shown he has no obligation to uphold his oathe of office and ignores our laws and constitution as he chooses.

I make plenty of sense. You’re just not listening.

The SCOTUS did *not* call the ACA a tax, no matter what else anyone wants to say about it. The assertion that the ACA is a tax is simply not objectively true.

“But I guess that’s a liberal thing….

I can’t help it if you can’t keep up with me, Joseph. :D

Given how quickly Sununu had to back off and apologize for what he said the other day, I’m really don’t impressed by anything he has to say.

Besides, Punkin, you’re reduced to posting Yahoo links to argue with the SCOTUS. I’m not a bit concerned. (laughing) :D

Well, I would just say to look at who is meeting in New York City right now discussing their Small Arms Treaty. The UN and its anti-USA detractors are meeting on our soil to discuss moves to implement removing small-arms, both military and private, from the hands of the citizens of its member nations. Guess who’s citizens hold the most small-arms in their possession…..USA, of course. So, why not be paranoid when dealing with a President that advocates his Secretary of State voting for and signing the Small Arms Treaty on July 27th in NYC. He will try to circumvent the legislative process in the US for enforcing international rule that he feels will need no approval, other than his. Yes, there is reason to be paranoid.

Congress has passed a series of laws that allow easy access to guns and restrict law enforcement’s ability to go after traffickers. Three policies in particular impede law enforcement’s ability to prosecute traffickers:
•Keeping crime gun trace information secret: Until 2002, the ATF released aggregate crime gun trace reports to local police departments, researchers, policymakers and public safety advocates. The reports revealed for the first time that 1.2% of federally licensed gun dealers supply 57% of the guns used in crime. But, bowing to pressure from the gun lobby, Congress voted to restrict police access to crime gun trace data and cut off public access altogether. These restrictions, known as the Tiahrt Amendments (named for the Kansas Congressman who sponsored the bill), have passed in every Department of Justice budget since 2003, despite the fact that prominent law enforcement associations oppose them as a serious threat to public safety.
•Handcuffing the ATF: The ATF, the sole government agency charged with enforcing federal gun laws, has operated without a permanent director since the Bush Administration, and operates with just 1,800 agents to monitor approximately 77,000 gun dealers. Given these constraints, it would take ATF 22 years to inspect all federally licensed gun dealers. Even if the ATF had the manpower to inspect most gun dealers, federal law limits the agency to a single unannounced inspection of a dealer in any 12-month period. Congress has made it increasingly difficult for the ATF to revoke licenses of crooked gun dealers.
•An absence of records: It is impossible for law enforcement to know the whereabouts of millions of firearms in circulation today because Federal law explicitly bars the ATF from establishing a database of retail firearms sales, and private gun sellers are not required to keep a paper trail of transactions. Prior to 2001, federal authorities maintained criminal background check records for up to six months. Under President Bush, Attorney General John Ashcroft reversed this policy and ordered the destruction of all criminal background check records within 24 hours. Even though the General Accounting Office found that destroying these records endangers public safety, the policy remains in effect.

MiltonMan forget to tell us that Bush and Ashcroft were libs! Them libs and their guns!

Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony.

It’s hard for Jay and his lefty friends to appreciate freedom. Bookman has never cared about liberty or freedom, only government control. When those of us who don’t like the rising level of government control buy guns, it never occurs to Jay to solve the problem, only to regulate the response. Pretty soon life will come with a ten thousand page rule book that Jay and the democrats draft to keep the rest of us in line. It’s what collectivists have always done when actual people don’t properly appreciate the “workers paradise” that the elites have created for them.
To Jay, there are no problems that more rules can’t fix.

Well ……….. this deserve another post:

A: Guns have only two enemies – rust and liberal Democrats.

B: It’s always better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

C: Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you.

D: Never let someone or something that threatens you get inside arms length.

E: Never say “I’ve got a gun.” If you need to use deadly force, the first (and last) sound they hear should be “boom, boom” (double tap always).

F: The average response time of a 911 call is 23 minutes, the response time of a .357 is 1400 feet per second.

G: The most important rule in a gunfight is: Always win – cheat if necessary.
