The Los Angeles Times has a damning piece explaining how our good pals at JPMorgan & Chase have allegedly manipulated the electricity market in California and perhaps in the Midwest as well, stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from consumers and businesses and depositing it in the accounts of JPMorgan, pretty much risk free.
The focus of the alleged scam is the California Independent System Operator, which fulfills the state’s energy needs by taking bids from private power marketers to provide electricity to the state.
Here’s how the Times explains it (and don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as it may seem):
“The alleged scheme involves two related wholesale electricity markets maintained by the ISO. There’s the day-ahead market, in which power plant owners place bids to provide power for the California electricity grid in the future; and the real-time market, an auction market through which ISO buys electricity for immediate distribution to homes and businesses.
To give plant owners an incentive to participate in these auctions, ISO guarantees to cover their costs for starting up or running their plants at a minimal level, even if their bids aren’t accepted. This is known as “bid cost recovery.” ISO rules allow bidders to claim payments of up to twice their real costs.
In simplest terms, JPMorgan submitted bids in the day-ahead market that were so low the firm was certain to be accepted onto ISO’s roster of potential electricity suppliers — in fact, they were negative bids, essentially offering to pay ISO to take their electricity…. ISO believes that JPMorgan never intended to make that sale, but the beauty of its low bids was that they made it eligible to collect bid cost recovery payments.
The next step was for JPMorgan to make sure that ISO didn’t actually buy its electricity, presumably because the profit margin from the bid cost recovery claim was greater than from actually selling energy. So in the real-time market, it priced its electricity so high that ISO wouldn’t buy it.
The bottom line, the ISO says, is that JPMorgan’s traders never intended to sell it electricity via these bids. The scheme, it says, seems to have been designed purely to capture a bid cost recovery payment the bank didn’t deserve, at a rate that was inflated anyway.”
In other words, pretend that you’re ready to sell electricity at a low rate; collect a handsome fee for pretending to sell electricity at a low rate; then bid high to ensure that you never have to actually provide that electricity.
Repeat, day after day, collecting some $57 million in improper payments in just six months between 2010 and 2011, with more such payments perhaps yet to be discovered. Free money!!!
But of course, it’s impolite to even notice that Wall Street continues to rip us off in a seemingly endless series of scams. To do so is to be anti-capitalist, even socialist. So forget I said anything, will ya?

“As my wife says, I don’t think I want to give my money to people that hate us or our friends.”
Just another bigoted statement. Its not about hate Joe. Its about the fact that the Cathy’s simply disagree with gay marriage due to their religious beliefs. Trying to construe it as “hate” is a dishonest argument.
“Shrug. What do you want, a cookie?”
No. I already told you. I want one a them delicious chick fil a sandwhiches.
“I’m not telling anyone else what to do, but you certainly seem troubled by what my wife and I plan to do.”
Nope. I think its great that you, your wife, and other liberals are going to vote with your pocket books and not patronize chick fil a. Democracy in action. The only thing I object to is the rather intellectually weak and dishonest point that just because they oppose gay marriage on religious views that they must be bigoted, narrow minded people. That view in and of itself is narrow minded and bigoted. Oh but the irony.
“I doubt it, too. But word gets around.”

“Maybe you can also find some BBQ places out in the country that don’t cotton to nonwhite folks, too. Perhaps you’d also find *that* to be a “very pleasant” dining experience.”
Can’t think of one single BBQ place out here in the country that doesn’t openly cater to people of all races. And perhaps you could quit suggesting racism as is your modus operandi as well as that of many a liberal on here. You did it with johnnyreb and now you’re doing it again. If you’re going to suggest racism at least have some semblance of concrete evidence before going down that wabbit hole. Bigotry is the practice of rejecting someone because of their race, religion, skin color, age, sex, income level etc. Rejecting the act of homosexual sex based on religious beliefs or personal beliefs is not in and of itself bigotry. You can disagree with Cathy and decide not buy his fast food sandwich but there is no basis to call him a bigot.

Talk to a CFA franchisee. There is a waiting list a mile long, communities all over the US are waiting for one to open nearby. Top of the list for profit per location of all fast food. I understand your reasons, I boycott places myself. But they are doing something right, of course with someone else’s help, not by themselves.

Can you provide evidence or proof thereof? Because that’s a pretty serious charge you’re making. When I go into chick fil A I see minorities working there and I see minority managers. What I do notice though about them is that they do discriminate against kids with tattoos all over them, nasty hair, earrings on men, nose rings, eyebrow rings, etc. And they do discriminate in favor of clean cut, wholesome looking kids including many very nice looking African American and Hispanic kids.

I’m amused by those who are just now reacting to Mr. Cathy’s outspoken opinions and stances. This is no news. I haven’t graced the doors of his establishments for decades now. That’s my choice. It’s his business and if he wants to put the imprimature of his business product on a socio-political stance, so be it. I hold him in no higher regard than he does me. So be it
BUT why are y’all not talking about the Boy Scouts and their anti-gay policies. That’s a much, much different institution which does practice discrimination against a class of our society and benefits greatly from the support of such institutions as our public schools where they are not only allowed, but encouraged to recruit.

“Do you not know of how many have committed suicide due in part to the way they were treated?”
And I don’t condone picking on or treating anyone in a viscious or mean spirited manner simply because they are gay. As for suicide there are plenty of kids who commit suicide because they were bullied or picked on for all sorts of reasons. So what’s your point?
“I just love how the very in your face CHRISTIAN Mr. Cathy could have this view.”

Doom — “Just another bigoted statement.”
That is the single stupidest statement I have ever seen you make on here, Doom, and that’s saying something.
If you can demonstrate some degree of hatred on my part for Mr. Cathy, then have at it. Otherwise, you’re just full of it, as usual.
“Its not about hate Joe.”
Of course it is.
“Its about the fact that the Cathy’s simply disagree with gay marriage due to their religious beliefs.”
Then why does Mr. Cathy feel the need to mix his religious beliefs up with the conduct of his business? Why can’t he disagree as an individual instead of dragging his business into it? I’m not the only person here who’s said they could overlook his views if he simply hadn’t involved his business.
“Trying to construe it as “hate” is a dishonest argument.”
Trying to say it isn’t is even more dishonest.
“No. I already told you. I want one a them delicious chick fil a sandwhiches.”
And as Kamchak and I already told you, you’re going to have to have five.
“Nope. I think its great that you, your wife, and other liberals are going to vote with your pocket books and not patronize chick fil a. Democracy in action. The only thing I object to is the rather intellectually weak and dishonest point that just because they oppose gay marriage on religious views that they must be bigoted, narrow minded people.”
Which is something I’ve neither said nor thought, Strawman Doom.
“That view in and of itself is narrow minded and bigoted.”
Yes it is, and it’s a good thing I don’t hold it.
“Oh but the irony.”
If you find some in there, let me know. Your notion of irony is predicated on me holding an opinion I don’t actually hold. Maybe you’d be better served by asking me what I think instead of guessing — after all, you’ve got such a poor track record of guessing correctly.
“And they also will be free to vote with their pocketbooks.”
Agreed. I don’t begrudge anyone the right to choose on this point, and I certainly won’t berate anyone for their choice. You, however, seem discomfited by my choice and dishonest as well, speculating inaccurately on the reasons why we’re doing it.
“Can’t think of one single BBQ place out here in the country that doesn’t openly cater to people of all races.”
Try being Hispanic way out in Sticksville and see what happens. I’m sure you’ve got a clue.
“And perhaps you could quit suggesting racism as is your modus operandi”
Sorry, but it’s not. And you know better.
“as well as that of many a liberal on here. You did it with johnnyreb”
JohnnyReb has recently begun expressing racist views and then excusing them under the aegis of ‘well, I’m just not politically correct.’ What he’s said has nothing whatsoever to do with political correctness; it’s just outright racism on his part.
“and now you’re doing it again.”
If you’re going to express pleasure at the notion of excluding entire groups of people from your dinner table, don’t be surprised when it starts to look and smell like racism to others.
“If you’re going to suggest racism at least have some semblance of concrete evidence before going down that wabbit hole.”
If you’re going to give JR a pass for this racism, then maybe you’d have more credibility if you’d actually read what he said before taking up for him.
“Playing the race card with no evidence is unbecoming of you- not to mention just plain low down”
Expressing glee at the possibility of excluding entire groups of people from your dinner table is unbecoming of *you* and is just as low down. If you don’t want to be thought of that way, then maybe you should keep such feelings to yourself.
Kind of like Mr. Cathy should have.

Bigamy is a completely separate issue from the civil right to same sex marriage. There was a time when Catholics couldn’t marry Protestants and Jews couldn’t marry Christians…society evolved past that. Now it has evolved beyond same sex criteria. Who knows what the future holds. If you mean polygamy and polyandry, there are plenty of societies, many of them Christian by religion, which permit and condone polygamy.

You are correct. She had found a “white elephant” (an extremely difficult requirement to fill), but had actually managed to find someone with *all* the qualifications they wanted for an IT position at their HQ. They actually went to the trouble — and this is very unusual — of doing background checks and the like *before* they had actually met him; that’s how strong his resume was. Normally, hiring authorities want to meet someone before doing those sorts of checks.
Anyway, the guy was Orthodox Jewish, and his warm welcome apparently evaporated the moment the CFA bigwigs got a look at him.

not sure I see the distinction/difference that you do…was it unlawful for a Christian to marry a Jew…or a Catholic a Prod etc?…but polygamy is unlawful….besides you never answered…would you support it?

You have no right to not be offended.

I would…provided there were good legal protections for ALL involved, and provided it applied to ALL multiple marriage.

Da Vinci didn’t paint the Mona Lisa. Someone else created the paints, someone wove the fabric. Someone else grew the animals whose hair was used to make the paint brushes. And a carpenter made the easel. And finally of course the government created an army which prevented an invasion and saved Da Vinci from being taken as a slave and worked to death in the fields

I don’t speak for anyone else except for me. The Cathy’s give a lot of money to charities and college funds and I can respect that very much. Interviewed Bubba Cathy (one of Truet’s sons) for a marketing project during college, so I know first hand their religious & political views. Never really thought about it one way or the other, until now.
They made a choice to wear those views on their sleeves as a corporation and I have made a choice not purchase their product.
No hard feelings from me. I will not go hungry and certainly the Cathy family will not go broke.

I made the mistake of reading bigamy when you had said polygamy and that was my error.
Would I support polygamy…as a personal choice, no. As a cultural thing, out own Western Judeo-Christian social norms are not in favor and that, like same sex marriage, is reflected in our legal system That is another issue.
Now, do I think that polygamous unions contracted in countries under legal systems where it is recognized, yes, I would. It’s sorta like the Israeli approach…polygamy under Israeli civil law is not permitted, but polygamous unions contracted in countries where it is legal are recognized by the state on immigration.

My commentary on the forward market for electricity arbitrage trades is that, as long as it’s legal, it will and should happen. Makes the market more efficient as, now, the CA ISO will likely adopt new rules clarifying who can receive a “bid cost recovery payment” (likely only a provider) and that problem will be solved. Same thing SHOULD happen with the Internal Revenue Code and any Welfare statues. Smart people will take advantage of such opportunities and and God bless the smart souls who seize the OPPORTUNITY. You are truly an American.
Look, on this Chic-fil-A thing, you’ve got to understand that the Cathy family wears their religious beliefs on their collective business sleeves. Always have. They’ve pulled out of golf tournament sponsorhsips over it, close their stores on Sunday and will fire you for immoral behavior (so I hear). This latest comment from Dan Cathy is consistent with their beliefs and no big change. If you don’t think they’re serious, try buying a chicken sandwich from ‘em on Sunday.

Based on your dumb logic the business I started myself isn’t really mine because I drive to work on roads built by the government. LOL That’s pathetic.
Who said anything about “ownership”, squirt. You did not build the roads, we all did through payment of taxes. Try to run your business for a week without using infrastructure and services provided by the taxpayers.

“Try being Hispanic way out in Sticksville and see what happens. I’m sure you’ve got a clue.”
I’ve never seen one turned away at any restaurants in my life Joe. Perhaps you would be better suited putting away your imagined racial boogeyman. Its making you look stupid.
“And perhaps you could quit suggesting racism as is your modus operandi”- Doom
“Sorry, but it’s not. And you know better”.- Joe mama
Nope. From what I’ve seen today and of late you sure seem to love playing the race card. Can’t get enough of it can ya?
“as well as that of many a liberal on here. You did it with johnnyreb”
“JohnnyReb has recently begun expressing racist views and then excusing them under the aegis of ‘well, I’m just not politically correct.’ What he’s said has nothing whatsoever to do with political correctness; it’s just outright racism on his part.”- Joe mama
Nope. That’s just you in all your grand self righteousness and your supposed mind reading ability throwing out your usual race card.
“If you’re going to express pleasure at the notion of excluding entire groups of people from your dinner table, don’t be surprised when it starts to look and smell like racism to others.”
And as has been explained to you numerous times chick fil a does not discriminate. Their owner simply expressed that he does not believe in gay marriage due to his religious beliefs. Period. And here you trot out with your deck of racism cards. Sheesh.
“If you’re going to suggest racism at least have some semblance of concrete evidence before going down that wabbit hole.”- Doom
“If you’re going to give JR a pass for this racism, then maybe you’d have more credibility if you’d actually read what he said before taking up for him.”- Joe Mama
Not referring to JR. I’m referring to your comment to me that maybe I would be more comfortable eating at a BBQ restaurant that to paraphrase doesn’t like serving Hispanics. It was an overt suggestion of racism and it had no place in the conversation. You simply decided to start trotting out your strawman racism card again. There was no reason for that.
“Playing the race card with no evidence is unbecoming of you- not to mention just plain low down”
“Expressing glee at the possibility of excluding entire groups of people from your dinner table is unbecoming of *you* and is just as low down. If you don’t want to be thought of that way, then maybe you should keep such feelings to yourself.”
Please point out to me where I am expressing glee over entire groups of people being excluded from the dinner table? I express no glee in this. I do express glee in laughing about your poutrage. Your ridiculous assertion is erroneous for 2 reasons. Number one any gay person that wants to can walk right into chickfila and order a sandwich. Nothing is stopping them so put away your poutrage.
Number 2 is that my only defense of Mr. Cathy is his right to say what he feels and if he feels that gay marriage is wrong then that’s his damn right to feel that way. You don’t like it that’s just tough. It doesn’t mean that he hates gays or is bigoted as many on here have suggested. You need to get out of your own narrow minded thinking and realize that just because someone doesn’t believe the same things as you doesn’t make them a hateful bigot as many of you liberals have asserted.
And put away the race card Joe. Its old and tiresome. Especially with the frequency with which you use it.

Both the Old and New Testament were written by unknown authors and there’s not a shred of evidence that God so much as inspired even one word in them.
