Romney camp toying with symbolic birtherism

drudge

A screengrab from DrudgeReport.com, the conservative id, highlighting accusations from Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio that President Obama's birth certificate is undoubtedly a fake. It is complete with links to World Net Daily, which gleefully reports Arpaio's claim that this information "threatens to weaken national security.”

———————————–

John Sununu, a prominent spokesman for the Romney campaign, says that he is sorry for his remark Tuesday morning that “I wish this president would learn how to be an American.”

I do not for a moment believe that Sununu is sorry about that remark. Quite the contrary, he said what he intended to say and what the Romney campaign had instructed him to say.

After all, in a separate appearance Tuesday morning on Fox News, Sununu said much the same thing in slightly different words, claiming that Obama “has no idea how the American system functions. And we shouldn’t be surprised about that, because he spent his early years in Hawaii smoking something, spent another set of years in Indonesia.”

How is that functionally different from the comments for which he apologized?

Later that same day, Romney himself accused Obama of wanting to “change the nature of America,” claiming that “his course is extraordinarily foreign.” If Sununu’s statement had been a mistake and the campaign was truly chagrined by it, there is no way Romney would have publicly reinforced it.

In other words, Obama’s “otherness” was the Romney campaign’s message of the day. Their goal was to not to discuss Obama’s economic policies, but to cast their opponent as “extraordinarily foreign” and unAmerican in the eyes of voters. It is a slightly more subtle form of the lunacy playing out in the Drudge screengrab posted above.

That, in turn, is a sign of danger and weakness within the Romney campaign.

In the last couple of weeks, Romney has come under harsh attack from the Obama campaign, both in speeches and statements by Obama and in campaign ads airing in swing states. He hasn’t responded well. In fact, Romney’s inability to either defend himself or change the subject has brought also harsh condemnation from the GOP right, which is fearful that he is repeating the mistakes of John McCain.
For example, Byron York, in a much-publicized piece headlined “How Did Vaunted Romney Death Star Break Down?“, complains that “the Romney campaign is not displaying the super-aggressive effectiveness it showed in the primaries” against his fellow Republicans. If Romney doesn’t regain “the back-against-the-wall fighting spirit he had in the Florida primary,” York writes, “the Obama campaign will run over him.”

It has become an article of faith on the conservative right that in 2008, McCain lost because he did not play rough and did not fight back. He didn’t raise questions about Obama’s citizenship, about his patriotism, about Obama’s alleged goal of destroying America as we know it, about his ties to terrorists, etc. The conservative right is quite convinced that raising such allegations before the general public is the path to victory, because it matches so closely to what they themselves already believe.

The statements by Sununu and Romney on Tuesday were intended to reassure nervous conservatives that yes, they get it. However, to the degree that the Romney campaign is pushed closer to the lunatic fringe as a means of proving its toughness to its own base, it will lose. Popular as it is among conservatives, it simply is not an argument likely to convince the swing and independent voters who will decide this race. As the backlash to Sununu’s statement suggests, it is likely to do the opposite.

In fact, I suspect the Obama campaign is pushing the Romney folks hard for just that reason, hoping to provoke them to overreact. They know that the GOP base is pushing Romney in that same direction, and they too must have noticed that one of the striking attributes of the Romney campaign has been its inability to deny the right what it demands.

In other words, yesterday’s “slip” may become tomorrow’s campaign theme, and if that happens it will make the Obama campaign very very happy.

If the Obama administration would give the House of Representative the 90% of the “Fast and Furious” documents currently withheld, I would think Obama committed to Americanism – respect for our system of checks and balances, and hopefully proof that Holder and company were not conspiring to break laws for a perverse purpose. As is, Sununu has it right.

PrezBO in his own words is the best campaigner for Romney!

The quasi-Marxist droning of how achievers have not earned what they have achieved is unAmerican. It is a political theology by, of, and for losers seeking to take credit from those who accomplish things to those who did not. Quite possibly, if PrezBO had ever accomplished anything of merit under the American economic system (besides exist in one form or another subsisting off / redistributing that which is produced by others), he would have a perspective of how Main Street America works than he does.

It circles to the secondary reality that (regardless of what the liberal shills would have you think) most Americans are more interested in what PrezBO does with taxpayer money than what Romney does with his own.

The problem is that Romney can’t push back from its own screwup — not getting on top of his tax returns and Bain!! This should be evident how Romney handles issues: taxes were a problem when Romney faced Kennedy in his Senate run and his gubernatorial run in Massachussetts; Bain has been a problem since Romney signed papers to the SEC while supposedly “retired”. Romnmey has been running for President for EIGHT YEARS…and if John McCain saw 26 YEARS of Romney’s returns and chose Sarah Palin for VEEP…..something’s being HIDDEN…….and Romney has yet to fix that!! If Romney handles his personal issues like this…can you imagine how he’d handle the Presidency????

Hawaii: Obama birth certificate is real
Updated 7/28/2009 7:41 PM

In an attempt to quash persistent rumors that President Obama was not born in Honolulu on Aug. 4, 1961, Hawaii’s health director reiterated Monday afternoon that she has personally seen Obama’s birth certificate in the Health Department’s archives:

“I, Dr. Chiyome Fukino, director of the Hawaii State Department of Health, have seen the original vital records maintained on file by the Hawaii State Department of Health verifying Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen. I have nothing further to add to this statement or my original statement issued in October 2008 over eight months ago….”

On Oct. 31, Fukino originally tried to put an end to the belief among “birthers” that Obama was born in Kenya and thus was ineligible to run for the office of president.

Despite Fukino’s statements, the issue has continued to resonate from Capitol Hill to the national airwaves.

Last week, CNN’s Lou Dobbs demanded Obama’s original birth certificate. CNN/U.S. President Jon Klein told staffers of Lou Dobbs Tonight that the issue is a “dead” story, Kline told the Los Angeles Times in an interview published Sunday.

In an e-mail, the Times reported, Klein wrote that CNN researchers determined that Obama’s 1961 birth certificate no longer exists because Hawaiian officials had discarded paper documents in 2001 — a claim denied Monday by Hawaiian health officials.

In 2001, Hawaii’s paper documents were reproduced in electronic format, but “any paper data prior to that still exists,” Health Department spokeswoman Janice Okubo said.

Okubo would not say where Obama’s original birth certificate is but said, “We have backups for all of our backups.”

The Hawaii state assembly actually granted the authority to the state department of vital records to refuse requests for records which were, in the department’s judgment, harassing, unwarranted or repetitious. The good people of the state of Hawaii don’t like outsiders coming in and telling them how to run their affairs any more than the good people of the state of Georgia would.

I, for one, welcome this line of attack. Insular thinking seems to have become a particular problem with the right. They are constantly surrounded by like minds, watch a lot of Fox News at home and even when they are out and about need only turn on am radio to have every “Marxist” “socialist” “Kenyan” “un-American” “out to destroy America” thought reinforced.

Pretty soon they begin to believe that everyone else thinks as they do and that these very fringe ideas are actually part of the mainstream. After all, everyone they know thinks the same things and the rest of us are just liberal nutjobs. This is how you get to the point where an entire segment of the population is willing to state, with the full force of faith in the Gospel that anyone who would vote for the President is “ignorant”, “unintelligent”, “uninformed”, or “just plain bought off by government handouts”.

They cannot seem to grasp that there is more than one viewpoint on the best direction for this Country and adherence to one over the other, be it right or left, may be a point of disagreement for you but it says nothing about the true base nature of the person holding that allegiance.

Groupthink and an insular nature will continue to separate the right from the mainstream to the point of irrelevance.

Romney has a problem. That problem is an incompetent staff. The election is now about Romney’s taxes, offshore bank accounts, and two different stories on when he actually resigned from Bain. Today the election is not about Obama and the lousy economy.

His staff needs to put these stories to rest in July and not wait until September.

This election should be about the economy. But it is not. Now they are dragging out the birth certificate nonsense again.

The election is there for the taking. Real unemployment is off the charts with millions out of work with no sign of a job in the next several years. But the Romney staff is throwing that away on the dumb move not to release tax returns.

If Romney and his people cannot manage a campaign any better than this, I shutter to think how they will manage an actual country.

Here’s the deal: Obama is not perfect and I don’t agree with every decision that he’s made, but he is a far better choice than Mitt Romney. The mission of the GOP, from day 1, has been to get Obama out of office, and they don’t give a damn if they have to take the entire country with them. They know that the only way they can possibly win is to continue to lie to the American public about everything associated with Obama. I guess it never occured to them that putting forth some decent ideas and candidates who aren’t bats**t crazy might be a better alternative.

Wrong! At that time Social Security Numbers were issued after an application for one was completed by the person who wanted it; also one had to be 14 years of age or older to be eligible to get that number. I was born in Alaska but because I lived in Maryland when I reached the age of 14 my SSN falls in the Maryland numerical order.

Now SSN’s must be in a person name before the reach their first birthday in order to be able to be claimed on anyone’s taxes as a dependent so unless you move out of your birth state before then you will fall into that areas set of numbers.

There’s a big difference between “birthers” and “income taxers.” Obama’s BC has been proven and verified, so he is a US citizen. The POTUS has never before been required to show his BC to anybody, and the fact that he is the POTUS is proof enough that he is a US citizen.

On the flipside, presidential candidates have a history of showing their tax returns when running. Romney is refusing to release his, so there’s obviously something shady in there. Also, he released 23 years of returns to McCain when he was trying to run for VP and McCain STILL picked Palin.

I don’t think that anyone questions whether or not Romney paid his taxes. I really don’t think that’s at issue.

The issue I think we’re all dancing around — and the one Romney is likely concerned about — is what is IN those tax returns. If he’s got a couple of years where he paid nothing or close to nothing, that’s REALLY going to hurt him with some segments of the voting public. Obama could nail him as a Wall Street fatcat and you know — Romney wouldn’t have any sort of effective counterattack for that.

I think the Obama campaign glommed onto Romney’s weak point, and Romney knows it. The only thing I can’t figure is why Republicans are joining the call for him to release the returns. I guess it’s *possible* that they think he could weather whatever criticism he gets for them, but then again, they might be looking for a way to knock him off and put someone else up as candidate in his place.

Channel 120 and I am with Jay. I find myself screaming at Anderson Cooper for not being able to read the teleprompter. He is trying to be tough and then butchers the reading so bad I cannot tell what he is saying more less the poor person being interviewed. Brian Williams is about the only one I take to the bank, if he is lying he is so good at it.

Romney and this big money have no improvisation skills. I noticed that in the primaries. If Romney gets off script he is toast. The speech to the NAACP was a prime example. He was going to make that speech with those talking points for the mass public no matter what happened in that audience. He had the press there and he was not going to move an inch off what he was told to say.

Then there are the givens the big money research firms give him, one being the economy. Huge money is put into this attack and if it changes by August they have burned all that research and will have to start from scratch. Obama has been brilliant not responding to a lot of his tautening and letting the Romney campaign spend lots of money on dead end streets. At the right moment Obama responds and the Romney treasure chest has to retool leaking oil on the entire turnaround. Obama doesn’t need a big campaign chest he spend much more wisely than Romney and is much more flexible. Like Kennedy said about Nixon, it is much easier on me telling the truth than it is on Nixon remembering his lies.

There has never been a POTUS in this history of this country who has ever been asked to show his BC, but now that the black guy gets elected, it’s an issue. You birthers just cannot accept this fact. You all keep getting smacked down on this issue and yet you still persist.

Once again, the POTUS is an American citizen, and no amount of hand wringing will change that.

Some years ago, Republican leaders came to understand that fundamentalist Christians were not only the most likely to vote but, because of their total willingness to believe without any evidence, were most likely to accept Republican attacks on abortion and evolution as being completely sincere. The net effect of this is a Republican voting base composed of crazed religious nuts who are simple enough to actually believe that, somehow, Obama just is not a real American.

Republican ambition and total lack of conscience has resulted in an electorate who truly believe their politicians actually care for them and their crazy beliefs. They are just too gullible to realize they are nothing more than tools for those who lust for political power and have sold themselves to Big Business which has an unlimited desire for profit.

I just think that it’s a responsible thing to do and standard procedure for candidates, and that in his particular case if he is making the case that people at the top just NEEEEEED another tax cut, like he’s proposing, I suspect his tax returns would show pretty clearly that people at the top need no further help at all.

I would hope the degree is from an accredited school! As to the minimum GPA, I’d let that be decided at the polls.

My point is that I believe all candidates should release this information. We are voting for the most important elected office in the country. We have a right to know as much about a candidate as possible.

Sununu’s commentary on Obama’s background is very, very legitimate (even more so since I said “…very, very…”). “O” spent several years living in Indonesia during his youth and his father was a Kenyan national – both facts clearly support Sununu’s use of the word “foreign.” Couple that background with O’s economic and social politics which are certainly foreign in that they focus on the socialist/communist notion of “fairness” and not the American Founders focus on the liberty of the human spirit and justice under the law.

No, I think Sununu’s commentary is legitimate political conversation and highlights the fact that O’s policies resonate more so with those who have not found a way to achieve in this land of milk and honey rather than those who don’t live in “Whinersville.”

Adam — “Well whether or not it’s biased, it wasn’t right for the 2010 elections. Nate Silver WAS.”

EV does a good job for President and Senate elections, not quite so well for the House. Nate Silver does stats, but where he really excels, IMO, is meta-analysis and highlighting methodological and math flaws, so I rely on him as a reality check — he keeps me from relying on flawed pollsters.

For those who want to talk about accuracy, let’s not forget that Rasmussen called one poll FORTY PERCENT OFF; their results for Senator Inouye’s reelection in 2010 were horrendous. That alone ought to discount their work for this entire election cycle, IMO.

Wouldn’t win many hispanic votes. Cuban votes yes; general hispanic populace? NO.

cubans tend to be seen as “political prostitutes” to the other hispanic races in America. Cubans get an automatic right to stay in America, no questions asked, as long as they set one foot on American soil. All other hispanics? they get harrassed, picked on, and used as the poster boy/girls for “illegal alien invasion”.

Cubans, whether they ever try to “fit in”in america, get access to more government enabled programs than any other hispanic population.

I hope so, because the last time your boy ran, he couldn’t even beat McCain. Which in turn led to McCain being beaten by a Community Organizer.

I tend to agree with that. House is a given and Republicans have a great chance of taking the Senate.

The Romney campaign’s general strategy is obvious and not necessarily sub-optimal. Romney himself is just trying to avoid the big mistake while letting surrogates take cheap shots for him. This is probably the best approach since it has to be done, but the price of making the wrong attack personally could be quite high. The big problem for him is his tax returns. If he hasn’t released those come debate time, he is going to get absolutely skewered. His responses thus far have been inept and unconvincing. The people who will decide this election for him are barely even paying attention right now, but in a couple of months they will be. At this point, you have to assume that his camp has reached the conclusion that releasing will do more harm than not, and that cannot be a good sign.

I took your advice and looked at Rasmussen. It shows the President up by 56 and only 23 from taking it to the house. So I’m not sure what you are talking about. Are you?

Recon — “Okay you’ve answered my question, so now I’ll ask you one Joe or jackass I guess you now prefer the latter.”

Don’t guess, Punkin. KNOW. Try asking me.

There’s no shame in saying that you don’t know something, but it is shameful indeed to not know something and posture like you are because your ego won’t let you admit it.

“Did you read the current Rasmussen electoral map as you said that you did? If so what was your interpretation?”

I think it’s an outlier, as Rasmussen results often are. If you track the same question over time for multiple pollsters and then line up all the results, Rasmussen invariably tracks to the right. Sometimes only by a point or two, and sometimes in excess of five or six points, but it’s there and it’s quantifiable. I think that points to a house bias on Rasmussen’s part.

Does that mean I think it should be ignored? No, but I also don’t you should rely *exclusively* or *largely* on it, and that goes for any pollster. I prefer to use Rasmussen as a lower bound for my expectations; that is to say that I anticipate that whatever Rasmussen says, the *actual* results most likely will not pass beyond his results (in other words, I think Rasmussen’s results show the worst *possible* case for Obama, but not a very *likely* case).

I *prefer* poll aggregators like E-V.com and the like, because their blended approach (taking multiple poll results and averaging them) mutes the outlier figures and house effects of the different pollsters. The result is a slower, more gentle trend in the numbers that eliminates wild swings due to weird poll questions or survey population mis-sampling.

Just FYI, if we ever discuss an *individual* poll, I automatically ignore any individual poll with a margin of error greater than +/- 3.0%.

I realize that a community organizer is a formidable foe but I think we can muster up a few more votes than McCain…

Problem is, the formidable foe is now a sitting president. For info on why presidents lose, see Allen Lichtman.

Predicting the Presidential Election, 2012
By James Zogby

Their approach was based on a thorough analysis of the forces at work in shaping the political landscape in every U.S. presidential elections from 1860 to 1980. From this examination they developed their predictive model. And since then, Lichtman has used it to correctly forecast the outcome of every election from 1984 through 2008.

What I believe many people are missing on these discussion boards, is that Obama has never granted physical access to any independent forensic examiner to physically touch and and study the actual paper BC document. That document presumably sits in the Hawaii Department of Health.

Consider this: The mainstream media never really covered the birth certificate issue. Oh sure, they had their ‘debunking’ stories all line up in a cue and they played them to the America public who believed them and bought the line that it was a ‘debunked story”.

But they didn’t dismiss the story, except on April 27, 2011. That was the day that Obama decided to release the PDF file of his long form birth certificate. For 3 days, it was kind news. People were briefly talking about on talk radio. But all that conversation came to screech halt just 3 days later.

Conveniently, Obama wiped the story about his BC, off the map by killing Bin Ladin. Coincidence? Maybe. But maybe not. Both actions were in his control. So the day and days following Bin Ladin death, the BC story, was dead. No one was paying attention to the fact that various computer experts were claiming that the PDF file Obama released appeared fraudulent because of certain peculiarities.

The charge made here by the sheriff is very serious, but their investigation is confident they found fraud. Instead of pronouncing judgement when the best evidence has never actually been seen (the paper BC), read the actual forensic analysis before passing judgement.

The forensic report by was prepared by Mara Zebrest. (Just google her name). She has the credentials to be used as a witness in court cases. Her report shows a lot fascinating discrepancies.

What sickens me, is that the so called “birther” label was used to denigrate people that simply wanted the truth. Ronald Reagan used to have a saying when dealing the Soviets: Trust, but verify.
