National Review to Romney: Release the tax returns

You know, when even the editors of the highly conservative National Review are willing to take the GOP presidential nominee to task for not releasing his tax returns, the debate is pretty much over:

“The Romney campaign says he has released as many returns as candidate John Kerry did in 2004, and cites Teresa Heinz Kerry’s refusal to release any of her tax returns. Neither is an apt comparison. John Kerry actually released returns from 1999 through 2003, and also released tax returns during his Senate runs. As for Teresa Heinz, Romney isn’t the wealthy spouse of a candidate, but the candidate himself. In 2008, John McCain released two years of returns, but he had been filling out financial disclosure forms for decades as a senator. Romney protests that he is not legally obliged to release any tax returns. Of course not. He is no longer in the realm of the private sector, though, where he can comply with the letter of the law with the Securities and Exchange Commission and leave it at that. Perceptions matter.

Romney may feel impatience with requirements that the political culture imposes on a presidential candidate that he feels are pointless (and inconvenient). But he’s a politician running for the highest office in the land, and his current posture is probably unsustainable. In all likelihood, he won’t be able to maintain a position that looks secretive and is a departure from campaign conventions.”

In other words, get it all out and get it over with, because this current stance is unsustainable. But of course, the more stubbornly Romney refuses to follow the advice even of his friends and supporters, the more suspicious his behavior becomes. This is something that he should have handled back during the primaries, or at the very least right after clinching the nomination.

You do have to wonder why he hasn’t.

“you have to wonder why he hasn’t”

I would suggest that Romney’s refusal is a natural by-product of his upbringing and business career. Romney was born into a rich family, went to expensive schools and always had to best of everything.

In his business career, he was at the top and had, at his beck and call, the best lawyers and accountants to give him every tax break and dodge possible. Romney’s rich friends, naturally, has access to these same kinds of lawyers and accountants and used every tax shelter and dodge that was legal(and perhaps many that wern’t).

So, Romney’s mind set is that of a very wealthy man who doesn’t have to play by the same tax rules we more or less middle class do. This is so much a part of him that, amazingly, he seems to think, even as a Presidential candidate, that we should give him a free pass on this because he’s of the wealthy, upper crust class.

That’s also the point of the whole Bain thing. What Romney and Bain did was not by any means illegal, and you can make a strong argument that firing people is dirty work but in a capitalist economy striving for efficiency, somebody has to do it.

The question is whether voters will accept that “somebody” as their president, where a different set of rules and expectations apply.

Romney’s already lost HUGE on this issue. He looks weak by demanding an apology, which he’ll never get. He looks secretive. I think it might not get as far as Romney announcing his VP pick.

If McCain saw four years ago what Romney’s now trying to hide and still chose Palin over Romney as his running mate, that tells me there is something politically damaging there.

If you’re not clear on the point of all the Bain and tax return attacks, it’s this:

Romney isn’t running on anything at this point other than his business abilities. Not his governorship, not his running the Olympics. Nada. Just his time at Bain. Obama is turning that into a huge liability before Romney gets a chance to “introduce himself” at the convention. Leaving Romney absolutely nothing good to run on. It’s brilliant strategy and it’s working well so far. Romney looks completely ineffective trying to defend himself.

O no! Last time Bookman went fishing we wound up with something like 5,000 posts before Paul put a end to them all. Have mercy, Bookman. Leave a couple new write-ups with somebody at the AJC that can put them up for you.

As for this tax return business, I recall a time when I would of been ashamed to let somebody else see my returns. I made so little money in those years I couldn’t even pay for new tires for my cement mixer. This was back when I was hanging sheetrock and doing odd jobs.

I bet that’s the reason why Romney won’t release his returns. He probly went flat-out busted and would of hung his head in shame if anybody saw his returns.

On the other hand. . . naw, a straight-up guy like Romney wouldn’t of pulled any shenigans with his money. I hope he’s not holding the returns back because it would be all over for him if somebody saw the fast ones that he pulled.

Anyhow, I’m looking up old Newt again just in case Romney needs to pull out of the race. Newt’s got some great positions, but he’s awful hard on other peoples women. I don’t know who to be scared of most—Newt or Those People. Both will use your woman like a rented mule.

Just wondering, Jay, if you read the rest of the front page of NR…. Or any of the Corner pages? Good stuff…. You may indeed learn something beyond the “objective, unbiased, legitimate” reporting of the “mainstream” media. (Yeah, right: sarcasm, in case you can’t tell.) And Breitbart is pretty good too. (Of course, Brietbart wouldn’t even exist if people like you in the media would actually do their jobs and report from all sides of an issues, instead of giving the Obama party line on everything: the piece that John Nolte did today exposing the media’s idiocy regarding Sununu’s statement is a clear example–one of thousands–that we center/right people have to deal with on a daily basis). Honestly, Romney is right. He’s complying with the law, and any and everything he gives the Obama media will be misconstrued and lied about in as many a ways as possible. These hacks have NO intention of balance or perspective: their only goal is to protect the worst President we’ve known in generations. Anything they can do to ignore his failures–regardless of how much they have to lie and contort Romney to do so–they will do. No doubt about it in my mind or anyone else’s. And, if we want our Presidential candidates to be so forthcoming, then let’s deal with Obama’s college transcripts. Let’s deal with why, out of the blue, he decides to use executive privilege to defend Holder–or himself? I’d love to see the “media” do a tenth of the “investigative” reporting on him that they gave Palin in three weeks. But that ain’t gonna happen. They’ve had five-six years to examine this man and they’ve not done a smidgen of the job yet. And the sad part: all the so-called intelligent people who believe them. I mean, seriously. The brains are so little that they’re still believe the lies about Bain? They believe that Romney’s tax returns beyond anything lawfully required are more important than the proclamation that Obama will unilaterally refuse to enforce the constitution and our laws if he doesn’t like them….? That they’re more important than the Fast and Furious cover-up? That they’re more important than unilaterally deciding to, again, ignore law and undo Clinton’s welfare reform–just because he “wants” to? I And, obviously, I could go on and on and on…..) I mean seriously: people are so small-minded that the fabricated media narrative against Romney is more important than actually dealing with the dangerous failings of this President?

And, please, don’t insult your intelligence by trying to defend this so-called media. Any thinking person with some common sense and any desire whatsoever to be fair knows that the media is indefensible.

But, seriously, Jay and all the rest of his sycophants who visit this site to gobble up the garbage: read the articles on these sites you go to and find something to comment about other than the one or two items every now and then which you happen to find as fodder for your propaganda. You really will learn something and be a far better human being because of it.

And, btw, one reason I love NR: there are various opinions there. Unlike most democrats who are so used to the same status quo bull that they wouldn’t recognize a valid opposing opinion if it bit them in their *s* (….I mean mouth), conservatives do engage in meaningful examination of the issues from a myriad of perspectives.

“The question is whether voters will accept that “somebody” as their president, where a different set of rules and expectations apply.”

Hundreds of Counties in Red and Blue States have fired people over the last couple of years. Most of them because voters on both sides were unwilling to increase their property taxes to make up for shortages. Seems like the voters would be holding a candidate to a different standard than what they are more than happy to do in their own community.

It’s just that the leftist media has never gotten around to telling America this…. because? They agree. They agree with the radically left influences on Obama—and they’ve done everything they can to construe this as all “normal.” Sorry, it won’t fly anymore. Americans are, thankfully, not that dumb. We’re not willing to have the wool thrown over our heads and lead around like idiots any more. And the New Media is playing a huge part in this. Thank God. Literally.

I told one of my buddies in Athens not long ago–and after having lived there, working at UGA for a while, I know what I’m talking about. “You guys are so used to talking with each others’ *s* holes that you don’t even recognize what they are anymore.” Media people all hang out together and say the same things that they want to hear. And B., the “leftist media” never got around to telling people that his name was Barack Hussein Obama, that he lived in Indonesia as a kid, that his natural father was a Kenyan? Really?

So all that came as a surprise to you? When did you discover all those facts (no doubt on your own, since everyone had conspired to keep them from you)?

Here’s the brutal facts: The American people learned all those things and more, they learned them from the mainstream media, and THEY DECIDED THEY DIDN’T MATTER!!!!

That’s the thing that conservatives cannot bring themselves to accept. This whole “the media didn’t vet him” garbage is an excuse to save themselves from having to admit that the American people really do know all this stuff about their president, and they like him anyway or in some cases because of it.

Peter, just wondering: are you aware of how debunked that whole Bain is Bad thing really is? (Even by people who are Obama toadies?) Are you also aware of how much Obama and this government is guilty of the same thing you’re accusing Romney of–except in his case, he’s wasting tax dollars not money from investors? Are you aware of how unfriendly the tax code is in this country which makes outsourcing such a viable option? Are you aware of the fact that unions have institutionalized mediocrity to such an alarming extent while extorting unsustainable benefits that companies (who are earning money for their shareholders–as they are supposed to–money which nearly everyone in this company who owns stocks or retirement plans or mutual funds benefits from) have often had no choice?

I’m going to consider two options: either you don’t know all of this because you trust the media and have never had any other perspective offered you.

Or you willfully want to deny anything which doesn’t fit your pretty little picture with a haloed Obama in the center.

And as far as being a “Stooge,” as Steve says. Sorry. Won’t fly. Guy has been successful at pretty much everything he’s ever touched. Great academic record. All the Republicans Calling on Romney to Release His Tax Returns

The chorus of conservatives calling for Mitt Romney to release more of his tax returns has grown from being mostly those with an ax to grind to elected officials and the conservative establishment. Here’s who’s on the record wanting Romney’s taxes on the record so far:

Rick Perry. The Texas governor told the Associated Press Tuesday, “I’m a big believer that no matter who you are, or what office you’re running for, you should be as transparent as you can be with your tax returns and other aspects of your life so that people have the appropriate ability to judge your background and what have you… I think anyone running for office, if they get asked within reason to give people background about what they have been doing, including tax returns, should do that.”

Ron Paul. “Politically, I think that would help him… In the scheme of things politically, you know, it looks like releasing tax returns is what the people want,” the former presidential candidate told Politico Tuesday.

Brit Hume. “Anytime it’s an issue between disclosure and non-disclosure, you always wonder whether it’s better just to put it out there,” the Fox News commentator told Bill O’Reilly Monday night.

No Jay I don’t have to wonder why because I DON’T CARE!!!

Questions Jay:

1. What information do you hope to gather from Romney’s tax returns?
2. Would you change your opinion of him if he released his returns?
3. If for example he gave a lot to charity, would that lead you to change your mind about him and potentially vote for him???
4. What if he paid a really high effective tax rate? Would you consider voting for him then??

If you answer No and No to questions three and four, than why do YOU care??

Answer…Because Romney is a Republican you automatically can’t stand him and his wealth. Therefore lets make up a bunch of non stories to try and make him look bad.

No offense Jay, but this is pretty bush league. Who cares how much Romney or anyone for that matter makes…I think our country has far bigger issues…don’t you????

Jay, I know why Romney will not release his tax records, at least for now. Obama will use it to show how rich Romney is and that he’s out of touch from the average American and that he will only protect the rich. Again, I find this thing a distraction because Obama refuses to talk specifics about his policies, if the average American knew what Obama really meant by spreading the wealth around, he would lose his re-election bid. I sure wish politicans had the courage to speak policy issues and direction instead of personal attacks…..

B, your fellow Americans know all that stuff too. Hell, Obama confessed half of it himself in his two books.

But they, unlike you, have decided it doesn’t matter. I know you can’t accept that reality. Because if you accept it, then you have to also have to accept the fact that it is not Obama who is out of touch with America. It is you. America has changed, and you have not, and it is now you who is out of place.

That fact cannot be allowed to penetrate. You will believe whatever is necessary — birth certificate, media conspiracy, whitey tapes, etc. — to keep that thought at bay.

The thing that’s really weird about this is Romney’s own father set the precedent for releasing tax returns. I never thought W was half the man his father was. Now I can say pretty much the same about Mitt. When you apply for the biggest job in the country, people have a right to look at you under a microscope.

Mitt’s an arrogant blow hard. Two bets. Mitt caves and releases his tax returns, and Obama doesn’t apologize to him. He didn’t apologize to Bin Laden, don’t expect him to apologize to the Mitster.

The tax returns could show Romney to be as alien to average Americans as the R’s have portrayed Obama. Instead of being of mixed race and Kenyan paternity, the voluminous and infinitely complex tax returns will show him to have millions in numbered Swiss and Cayman Island accounts, esoteric tax shelters, etc. Instead of innuendos about Muslim ancestry, the tax returns will accentuate his active support for what millions of Americans believe to be a weird cult.

It is ironic that Romney’s main claim to legitimacy as a candidate was health care reform in Massachusetts, but he can’t run on that because it is so much like the federal health care reform that was patterned after it and which partisan politics now requires him to renounce. Because he can’t run on his record as Governor, he has to run on his business experience. But because the business experience involves so much outsourcing jobs, bankrupting companies, destroying jobs, etc., and the personal wealth he gained in that manner is so alien to middle class Americans, he can’t run on that either.

Unfortunately, it has gotten to the point that normal middle class centrist Americans, no matter how capable and brilliant, cannot get through the nominating process to run for President. So we are left with Obama and Romney.

We could do better. We should do better. Somehow we must do better.

Jay, you’re not getting away with it. 80% plus in survey after survey of media types indicate that they support liberals. And the number of positive to negative articles about Obama runs about 6 to 1 whereas positive about republicans runs about 1 in 6. (Don’t have the research in front of me–sorry.) More negative articles came out in three weeks about Palin than came out in the entire campaign about Obama (2008 campaign). So don’t sit there and feed me bull about the media doing its job. And how the public was fully informed. You’re right: the info was in those books. (At least the parts that hadn’t been excerpted out in subsequent editions). And you tell me that if a conservative had something comparably explosive in his books that it wouldn’t be front and center news day after day after day!!!! Honestly, Jay, not even you can be that dishonest. For Obama, anything that was remotely controversial was tucked away as securely as possible.

And, I’m not sure, but I think you were accusing me of racism. HOW DARE YOU!!!!! I don’t give a flying fart what color someone is as long has he or she has a vision of this country which works, which honors the constitution which they’re supposedly bound to uphold. Which is not bound and determined to make us a nanny state, which is deadset on making us a nation of dependents. (How horrible. Liberals should be ashamed of themselves for what they’re doing in creating a permanent underclass of society…. It’s horrifying.)

Did you sean Nolte’s Breitbart column today about the Sununu press conference. You should…. as I said earlier: you read something other than the party line once in a while and you might learn something. Small business people who are furious with Obama. Where’s the coverage? One was a black woman (matters to the racists on the left perhaps, but not to me): totally ignored. Because it’s not the narrative that the lefties want to give….. But that’s the media that we’ve had to deal with for decades. Tell us what the paternalistic bastards who thinks we’re too dumb to think for ourselves wants us to hear. I’m not that stupid.

The Negro terrorizes simply by being himself; I however, must browbeat a bit in order to achieve the same end. Perhaps I should have been a Negro. I suspect that I would have been a rather large and terrifying one, continually pressing my ample thigh against the withered thighs of old white ladies in public conveyances a great deal and eliciting more than one shriek of panic. Then, too, if I were a Negro, I would not be pressured by my mother to find a good job, for no good jobs would be available. My mother herself, a worn old Negress, would be too broken by years of underpaid labor as a domestic to go out bowling at night. She and I could live most pleasantly in some moldy shack in the slums in a state of ambitionless peace, realizing contentedly that we were unwanted, that striving was meaningless.”

How about documents on how he sent guns to drug lords in Mexico how have murdered hundreds of people including Americans?

How many billions of tax dollars in stimulus has Obamam sent to other countries?
How many billions of our tax dollars has he diverted to his union thug buddies?
how many billions of tax dollars have been wasted on his “shovel ready job nonsense”?

No it is much more important that liberal rags like the AJC harp on what Mitt did with HIS OWN MONEY! NOT TAX DOLLARS BUT HIS OWN MONEY.

Funny how nobody points out how Obama used every trick in the book to avoid taxes on his money.
He and mooochelle even gave the max amount of cash to their daughtes “as a gift” to avoid taxes on that.

If you’ve rejected the faith you were exposed to in your early years, I’m not far enough in my walk to help you but never the less I wish you well , however, please don’t condemn those of us that believe differently than you.

And what’s more interesting I believe than tax returns, is his
divesture of Bain, a $4 bil company after which he claimed
his net worth was $200 mil, while simultaneously claiming
he’s a ‘good bidnessman.’

That’s like the Premier division of Clearchannel claiming $200mil

I do agree with you, Jay, and with the others who have called upon Romney to release all his tax returns. I believe he should, and the longer he refuses to do so the more it hurts him.
I disagree with the “National Review”, however, and do believe that the refusal of Teresa Heinz Kerry to release her tax returns is a valid comparison. During his Presidential campaign, John Kerry was critical of companies that outsourced jobs and that kept large amounts of cash overseas in order to avoid taxes and of large corporations who paid absolutely no taxes, and I think that the voters had a right to know whether his own wife owned stock in companies that did the very things he was complaining about.
And I also feel that, like both John Kerry and George Bush, President Obama should release his college transcripts and materials. I am not a birther, and DO believe that the President is a citizen. His mother was a citizen and he was born in Hawaii, and that settles it. But I do believe that we voters have the right to know whether or not he ever claimed foreign citizenship in order to qualify for financial aid programs or for special acceptance programs that were only available to foreign nationals. And I also believe that we have the right to read some of his college papers and writings on important legal topics. President Obama was the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review, and no one earns that post without having a collection of writings on various legal points to present in support of their application. And I believe that we have the right to read some of his ideas and analysis of key legal issues. We have been able to do that with other candidates in the past, and I think the voters deserve to read those legal briefs.
Like Romney’s refusal to release his tax returns…the more the refusal, the more suspicious it becomes. And as you point out, you do have to wonder why he hasn’t.

The media hurts Romney’s effort by criticizing his limited release of tax returns brought up by the Obama campaign.

For years the media criticizes the effort to entice Obama to release his birth certificate, an issue brought up by conservatives. They even coined a term, “birthers” to sneer and heap derision on those actively concerned with the issue.

We see how things are in “the media.” Vetting is a selective thing here in media-land. The Washington press corps isn’t in the White House to report the news, but to protect Obama from scandal.

Also, you can’t say that National Review is very conservative, not since Rich Lowry took over.

I am still confident that Obama has less support than he did in 2008. The vast number of people affected by the recession are not seeing any progress or creative ideas coming out of the administration to get us out of this mess. The American dream used to involve self sufficiency and personal freedom. It was considered embarassing to be dependent on the Government dole. Obama wants it to be socially acceptable to be dependent on the Government because he thinks he knows what is best for our interests. You can’t blame him. This comes from his background as a community organizer. He simply does not have the experience to grow the economy, completely overhaul the tax code (like 1986), or address entitlement reform. Because of his background, Obama’s proposals (when we get them) are always going to be tax the rich because the man is keeping me down. Unfortunately, the problems facing the U.S. today are bigger than Obama can handle. Romney may be boring, but he has successfully turned around $billion problems with his own money. He would be a more responsible guardian of ours.

What’s up with that?

It certainly explains why almost none of them are apparently capable of basic research or “showing their work”.

Almost to a man they are incapable of providing empirical data or proof. It truly seems beyond their grasp. Thus for them opinions are facts and the basic, long established truths are of no value at all.

Dear Kamchak @ 10:03, sorry to break your heart, but you know only leftists march lock step to whatever tune their overlords play. If Bookman cites a purportedly conservative authority to persuade – who, conservatives? – and it fails, why does it fail? Because he erroneously assumed that conservatives are like leftists, and respond to that citation to authority. Conservatives respond to intelligent arguments, which are MIA on this discussion.

Barnum and Bailey strikes again. He just laughs to the bank at his minions who actually believe this stuff. Same as Maddow, Shultz, etc.

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on Tuesday suggested that Hollywood liberals have been plotting for years to release the third and final Batman movie before the election in 2012 with a villain who’s name sounds like GOP hopeful Mitt Romney’s former company, Bain Capital.

“Do you know the name of the villain in this movie?” Limbaugh asked his listeners. “Bane. The villain in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is named Bane. B-A-N-E. What is the name of the venture capital firm that Romney ran and around which there is now this make-believe controversy? Bain.”

“The movie has been in the works for a long time, the release date has been known — summer 2012 — for a long time,” he added. “Do you think that it is accidental that the name of the really vicious, fire-breathing, four-eyed, what-ever-it-is villain in this movie is named Bane?”

“And now there’s discussion out there as to whether or not this was purposeful and whether or not it will influence voters. It’s going to have a lot of people. This movie, the audience is going to be huge. A lot of people are going to see the movie, and it’s a lot of brain-dead people, entertaining the pop-culture crowd. And they’re going to hear ‘Bane’ in the movie and they’re going to associate ‘Bain’ and the thought is that when they start paying attention to the campaign later in the year and Obama and the Democrats keep talking about Bain — not Bain Capital — Romney and Bain that these people will think back to the bad man.”

ragnar danneskjold,

Don’t believe Senator McCain’s skills include vetting things very well, and that is pretty well known by now (cheap shot, I know). I think McCain actually said he didn’t think he saw anything that would preclude Romney from being President. What do you really think that means? It is obviously a game of words. What would be on a tax return that would preclude anyone from President of the United States (not Bain Capital)? Really, as far as the Constitution is concerned I am sure Romney’s old enough to be president, and we are all going to trust he was actually born in America. But, here is the thing, most Americans are inherently patriotic, and even if they could save a buck, they wouldn’t put their money in a foreign bank, for ANY reason. Not everyone jumps hoops to avoid taxes at ALL cost. Most of us could find some shady tax shelter to invest in, but our morals or patriotic duty don’t let us do this. I don’t know how anyone could want to be President, and do all he could to not pay taxes, given how much God has given him. I really don’t He loves his church, but not his/our country?

Fascinating analysis by the CJR about the whole Mittens / Bain fact-checking situation:

“Readers are often frustrated with the narrow and seemingly pedantic nature of fact-checking by watchdogs like PolitiFact and Factcheck.org, which typically focus on the specifics of a given claim rather than the larger issue or debate in question. But there’s a good reason for the narrow focus of the genre—broader questions about significance and responsibility are simply beyond their purview and cannot be answered within the realm of facts. For example, as BostInno’s Walt Frick noted in a clever “Choose Your Own Adventure”-style Romney/Bain explainer, the significance of the dispute will vary depending on your answers to a series of highly subjective questions

How relevant do you think Romney’s time at Bain Capital is to his presidential candidacy?…

Is someone responsible for the business they own, even if they’re no longer involved in decision-making?…

How worried are you about offshoring of US jobs?

There are no objective answers to these questions. The irony is that many liberals were outraged by PolitiFact’s choice of the Democratic charge that the House GOP budget would “end Medicare” as its so-called 2011 “Lie of the Year.” As Chait wrote at the time, “it’s obviously a question of interpretation, not fact.” The same principle applies to Romney’s responsibility (or lack thereof) for decisions made at Bain during the period when he was technically its owner and CEO but not involved in “day-to-day” management of the firm. Some claims are too important to check.”

Why, because the alternative is to focus on Barack Obama’s record during this recovery which is the worst ever following a major recession. If we focused on how this president has handled his presidency, it might sway enough people to say let’s try someone who has run large organizations successfully. In fact, succcess is not bad, it is good because it actually creates jobs contrary to the presidents version where he thinks all jobs and all success is a result of government action.

I HIGHLY recommend any of you out here who have not seen “The End Of America” documentary, please watch it! It paints a pretty clear picture of the parallels of what has transpired over the almost past 12 years in DUMBING down of the U.S. citizenry (displayed by much of what we see on these blogs daily) and the OLIGARCHY, and what took place in Nazi Germany, starting in the late 20s.

Many of these moonbats are SOOOOO braindead it’s ridiculous!

“You do have to wonder why he hasn’t.”
Not really. You folks are going to have a hard time talking openness while not applying the same rules to the current administration.

gm above is on the money about outsourcing..
Good reporting on MSNBC about the heart of the controversy which will probably decide the election-outsourcing and government assistance to corporations that outsource making people like Romney and Bain very rich. Nobody here so far talking about that 1998 filing of Bain to set up plant in China to outsource appliance amnufacture jobs or that plant Bain is closing right now in Freeport Illinois to outsource jobs to China. Nobody here talking about bills before Congress that have died to end outsourcing. I guess it is because Georgia is not a state up for grabs in national politics and jobs actually coming back to Georgia like Caterpillar.

First president to attempt to close tax loopholes for overseas investments by US companies -JFK! Some good reporting on this would be helpful for the illiterates and Obozo haters..

Not one Romney supporter, in all the comments that I’ve read on any article on this topic, has argued that Romney shouldn’t release his tax returns. Every single pro-Romney comment takes the form of attacks on Obama. Not one actually supports Romney’s decision; they are *only* able to support their candidate in the form of a “No, you!” argument.

Johnny – that’s because all of this is bs to divert attention away from Obamas record. Nobody really cares whether Romney releases them because as soon as he des, the Obama camp will release a new smokescreen to keep people from focusing on the issue: has Obama done the things needed to get this economy back on track and if not, why not (and blaming someone else is not a valid answer).
