National Review to Romney: Release the tax returns

You know, when even the editors of the highly conservative National Review are willing to take the GOP presidential nominee to task for not releasing his tax returns, the debate is pretty much over:

“The Romney campaign says he has released as many returns as candidate John Kerry did in 2004, and cites Teresa Heinz Kerry’s refusal to release any of her tax returns. Neither is an apt comparison. John Kerry actually released returns from 1999 through 2003, and also released tax returns during his Senate runs. As for Teresa Heinz, Romney isn’t the wealthy spouse of a candidate, but the candidate himself. In 2008, John McCain released two years of returns, but he had been filling out financial disclosure forms for decades as a senator. Romney protests that he is not legally obliged to release any tax returns. Of course not. He is no longer in the realm of the private sector, though, where he can comply with the letter of the law with the Securities and Exchange Commission and leave it at that. Perceptions matter.

Romney may feel impatience with requirements that the political culture imposes on a presidential candidate that he feels are pointless (and inconvenient). But he’s a politician running for the highest office in the land, and his current posture is probably unsustainable. In all likelihood, he won’t be able to maintain a position that looks secretive and is a departure from campaign conventions.”

In other words, get it all out and get it over with, because this current stance is unsustainable. But of course, the more stubbornly Romney refuses to follow the advice even of his friends and supporters, the more suspicious his behavior becomes. This is something that he should have handled back during the primaries, or at the very least right after clinching the nomination.

You do have to wonder why he hasn’t.

The thing that’s really weird about this is Romney’s own father set the precedent for releasing tax returns. I never thought W was half the man his father was. Now I can say pretty much the same about Mitt. When you apply for the biggest job in the country, people have a right to look at you under a microscope.

Mitt’s an arrogant blow hard. Two bets. Mitt caves and releases his tax returns, and Obama doesn’t apologize to him. He didn’t apologize to Bin Laden, don’t expect him to apologize to the Mitster.

The tax returns could show Romney to be as alien to average Americans as the R’s have portrayed Obama. Instead of being of mixed race and Kenyan paternity, the voluminous and infinitely complex tax returns will show him to have millions in numbered Swiss and Cayman Island accounts, esoteric tax shelters, etc. Instead of innuendos about Muslim ancestry, the tax returns will accentuate his active support for what millions of Americans believe to be a weird cult.

It is ironic that Romney’s main claim to legitimacy as a candidate was health care reform in Massachusetts, but he can’t run on that because it is so much like the federal health care reform that was patterned after it and which partisan politics now requires him to renounce. Because he can’t run on his record as Governor, he has to run on his business experience. But because the business experience involves so much outsourcing jobs, bankrupting companies, destroying jobs, etc., and the personal wealth he gained in that manner is so alien to middle class Americans, he can’t run on that either.

Unfortunately, it has gotten to the point that normal middle class centrist Americans, no matter how capable and brilliant, cannot get through the nominating process to run for President. So we are left with Obama and Romney.

We could do better. We should do better. Somehow we must do better.

Jay, you’re not getting away with it. 80% plus in survey after survey of media types indicate that they support liberals. And the number of positive to negative articles about Obama runs about 6 to 1 whereas positive about republicans runs about 1 in 6. (Don’t have the research in front of me–sorry.) More negative articles came out in three weeks about Palin than came out in the entire campaign about Obama (2008 campaign). So don’t sit there and feed me bull about the media doing its job. And how the public was fully informed. You’re right: the info was in those books. (At least the parts that hadn’t been excerpted out in subsequent editions). And you tell me that if a conservative had something comparably explosive in his books that it wouldn’t be front and center news day after day after day!!!! Honestly, Jay, not even you can be that dishonest. For Obama, anything that was remotely controversial was tucked away as securely as possible.

And, I’m not sure, but I think you were accusing me of racism. HOW DARE YOU!!!!! I don’t give a flying fart what color someone is as long has he or she has a vision of this country which works, which honors the constitution which they’re supposedly bound to uphold. Which is not bound and determined to make us a nanny state, which is deadset on making us a nation of dependents. (How horrible. Liberals should be ashamed of themselves for what they’re doing in creating a permanent underclass of society…. It’s horrifying.)

Did you sean Nolte’s Breitbart column today about the Sununu press conference. You should…. as I said earlier: you read something other than the party line once in a while and you might learn something. Small business people who are furious with Obama. Where’s the coverage? One was a black woman (matters to the racists on the left perhaps, but not to me): totally ignored. Because it’s not the narrative that the lefties want to give….. But that’s the media that we’ve had to deal with for decades. Tell us what the paternalistic bastards who thinks we’re too dumb to think for ourselves wants us to hear. I’m not that stupid.

“I do admire the terror which Negroes are able to inspire in the hearts of some members of the white proletariat and only wish (This is a rather personal confession.) that I possessed the ability to similarly terrorize. The Negro terrorizes simply by being himself; I however, must browbeat a bit in order to achieve the same end. Perhaps I should have been a Negro. I suspect that I would have been a rather large and terrifying one, continually pressing my ample thigh against the withered thighs of old white ladies in public conveyances a great deal and eliciting more than one shriek of panic. Then, too, if I were a Negro, I would not be pressured by my mother to find a good job, for no good jobs would be available. My mother herself, a worn old Negress, would be too broken by years of underpaid labor as a domestic to go out bowling at night. She and I could live most pleasantly in some moldy shack in the slums in a state of ambitionless peace, realizing contentedly that we were unwanted, that striving was meaningless.”

How about documents on how he sent guns to drug lords in Mexico how have murdered hundreds of people including Americans?

How pathetic the left is harping on nonsense like this when real crime by the Obama administration just continues on a daily basics.
How many billions of tax dollars in stimulus has Obamam sent to other countries?
How many billions of our tax dollars has he diverted to his union thug buddies?
how many billions of tax dollars have been wasted on his “shovel ready job nonsense”?

No it is much more important that liberal rags like the AJC harp on what Mitt did with HIS OWN MONEY! NOT TAX DOLLARS BUT HIS OWN MONEY.

Funny how nobody points out how Obama used every trick in the book to avoid taxes on his money.
He and mooochelle even gave the max amount of cash to their daughtes “as a gift” to avoid taxes on that.

I do agree with you, Jay, and with the others who have called upon Romney to release all his tax returns. I believe he should, and the longer he refuses to do so the more it hurts him.
I disagree with the “National Review”, however, and do believe that the refusal of Teresa Heinz Kerry to release her tax returns is a valid comparison. During his Presidential campaign, John Kerry was critical of companies that outsourced jobs and that kept large amounts of cash overseas in order to avoid taxes and of large corporations who paid absolutely no taxes, and I think that the voters had a right to know whether his own wife owned stock in companies that did the very things he was complaining about.
And I also feel that, like both John Kerry and George Bush, President Obama should release his college transcripts and materials. I am not a birther, and DO believe that the President is a citizen. His mother was a citizen and he was born in Hawaii, and that settles it. But I do believe that we voters have the right to know whether or not he ever claimed foreign citizenship in order to qualify for financial aid programs or for special acceptance programs that were only available to foreign nationals. And I also believe that we have the right to read some of his college papers and writings on important legal topics. President Obama was the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review, and no one earns that post without having a collection of writings on various legal points to present in support of their application. And I believe that we have the right to read some of his ideas and analysis of key legal issues. We have been able to do that with other candidates in the past, and I think the voters deserve to read those legal briefs.
Like Romney’s refusal to release his tax returns…the more the refusal, the more suspicious it becomes. And as you point out, you do have to wonder why he hasn’t.

Ok man. If you can show were I have broad brushed all Christians, show it. You are one of the Kings of making derogatory comments, assertions and claims to what seems like all of the left, Democrats, etc on a regular basis.

You see it your way and I see it mine. With that said, we are all welcome to challenge and exchange on this board.

If you do not like being challenged when you make unsubstantiated assertions and claims, best I can say is not to make them. However, that is your choice, but I live on a two way street.

“I’m not far enough in my walk to help you ” Wasn’t a sad departure more than it was a progression. Kind of the like the opposite of your progression. So no assistance needed, but thanks for the offer……….. I guess.

I am not a birther, and DO believe that the President is a citizen. His mother was a citizen and he was born in Hawaii, and that settles it. But…

That “but” makes you a birther.

Not guaranteed by a long shot. I think Obama will win but it will be much closer than people think, either way.
