National Review to Romney: Release the tax returns

You know, when even the editors of the highly conservative National Review are willing to take the GOP presidential nominee to task for not releasing his tax returns, the debate is pretty much over:

“The Romney campaign says he has released as many returns as candidate John Kerry did in 2004, and cites Teresa Heinz Kerry’s refusal to release any of her tax returns. Neither is an apt comparison. John Kerry actually released returns from 1999 through 2003, and also released tax returns during his Senate runs. As for Teresa Heinz, Romney isn’t the wealthy spouse of a candidate, but the candidate himself. In 2008, John McCain released two years of returns, but he had been filling out financial disclosure forms for decades as a senator. Romney protests that he is not legally obliged to release any tax returns. Of course not. He is no longer in the realm of the private sector, though, where he can comply with the letter of the law with the Securities and Exchange Commission and leave it at that. Perceptions matter.

Romney may feel impatience with requirements that the political culture imposes on a presidential candidate that he feels are pointless (and inconvenient). But he’s a politician running for the highest office in the land, and his current posture is probably unsustainable. In all likelihood, he won’t be able to maintain a position that looks secretive and is a departure from campaign conventions.”

In other words, get it all out and get it over with, because this current stance is unsustainable. But of course, the more stubbornly Romney refuses to follow the advice even of his friends and supporters, the more suspicious his behavior becomes. This is something that he should have handled back during the primaries, or at the very least right after clinching the nomination.

You do have to wonder why he hasn’t.

Just wondering, Jay, if you read the rest of the front page of NR…. Or any of the Corner pages? Good stuff…. You may indeed learn something beyond the “objective, unbiased, legitimate” reporting of the “mainstream” media. (Yeah, right: sarcasm, in case you can’t tell.) And Breitbart is pretty good too. (Of course, Brietbart wouldn’t even exist if people like you in the media would actually do their jobs and report from all sides of an issues, instead of giving the Obama party line on everything: the piece that John Nolte did today exposing the media’s idiocy regarding Sununu’s statement is a clear example–one of thousands–that we center/right people have to deal with on a daily basis). Honestly, Romney is right. He’s complying with the law, and any and everything he gives the Obama media will be misconstrued and lied about in as many a ways as possible. These hacks have NO intention of balance or perspective: their only goal is to protect the worst President we’ve known in generations. Anything they can do to ignore his failures–regardless of how much they have to lie and contort Romney to do so–they will do. No doubt about it in my mind or anyone else’s. And, if we want our Presidential candidates to be so forthcoming, then let’s deal with Obama’s college transcripts. Let’s deal with why, out of the blue, he decides to use executive privilege to defend Holder–or himself? I’d love to see the “media” do a tenth of the “investigative” reporting on him that they gave Palin in three weeks. But that ain’t gonna happen. They’ve had five-six years to examine this man and they’ve not done a smidgen of the job yet. And the sad part: all the so-called intelligent people who believe them. I mean, seriously. The brains are so little that they’re still believe the lies about Bain? They believe that Romney’s tax returns beyond anything lawfully required are more important than the proclamation that Obama will unilaterally refuse to enforce the constitution and our laws if he doesn’t like them….? That they’re more important than the Fast and Furious cover-up? That they’re more important than unilaterally deciding to, again, ignore law and undo Clinton’s welfare reform–just because he “wants” to? I And, obviously, I could go on and on and on…..) I mean seriously: people are so small-minded that the fabricated media narrative against Romney is more important than actually dealing with the dangerous failings of this President?

And, please, don’t insult your intelligence by trying to defend this so-called media. Any thinking person with some common sense and any desire whatsoever to be fair knows that the media is indefensible.

But, seriously, Jay and all the rest of his sycophants who visit this site to gobble up the garbage: read the articles on these sites you go to and find something to comment about other than the one or two items every now and then which you happen to find as fodder for your propaganda. You really will learn something and be a far better human being because of it.

And, btw, one reason I love NR: there are various opinions there. Unlike most democrats who are so used to the same status quo bull that they wouldn’t recognize a valid opposing opinion if it bit them in their *s* (….I mean mouth), conservatives do engage in meaningful examination of the issues from a myriad of perspectives.

“The question is whether voters will accept that “somebody” as their president, where a different set of rules and expectations apply.”

Hundreds of Counties in Red and Blue States have fired people over the last couple of years. Most of them because voters on both sides were unwilling to increase their property taxes to make up for shortages. Seems like the voters would be holding a candidate to a different standard than what they are more than happy to do in their own community.

Even after the Sununu squabble, Romney himself goes on the campaign trail to accuse Obama of wanting to “change the nature of America” and claiming that “His course is extraordinarily foreign.”

In other words, Sununu didn’t misspeak. He expressed exactly the message that the Romney campaign had consciously settled upon, to cast Obama as “extraordinarily foreign” and unAmerican.

While Romney is heming and hawing and delaying, his top dollar tax lawyers and CPA’s are working around the clock to produce a set of tax returns and financial statements that will satisfy the American people. Although these documents will be complely fraudulent, they will appear so authentic and contain so many fail-safes that even the closest scrutiny will not reveal them for the fakes they are.

Jay, your comment at 6:57 speaks volumes. Yes. Exactly. The facts of Obama’s education and influences are clear. It’s just that the leftist media has never gotten around to telling America this…. because? They agree. They agree with the radically left influences on Obama—and they’ve done everything they can to construe this as all “normal.” Sorry, it won’t fly anymore. Americans are, thankfully, not that dumb. We’re not willing to have the wool thrown over our heads and lead around like idiots any more. And the New Media is playing a huge part in this. Thank God. Literally.

I told one of my buddies in Athens not long ago–and after having lived there, working at UGA for a while, I know what I’m talking about. “You guys are so used to talking with each others’ *s* holes that you don’t even recognize what they are anymore.” Media people all hang out together and say the same things that they want to hear. I’ve lived out there twice, G Mare, once as a kid when my father was stationed near Tillamook, and I worked eight years as a journalist in the Portland area. So I know it pretty well.

And B., the “leftist media” never got around to telling people that his name was Barack Hussein Obama, that he lived in Indonesia as a kid, that his natural father was a Kenyan? Really?

So all that came as a surprise to you? When did you discover all those facts (no doubt on your own, since everyone had conspired to keep them from you)?

Here’s the brutal facts: The American people learned all those things and more, they learned them from the mainstream media, and THEY DECIDED THEY DIDN’T MATTER!!!!

That’s the thing that conservatives cannot bring themselves to accept. This whole “the media didn’t vet him” garbage is an excuse to save themselves from having to admit that the American people really do know all this stuff about their president, and they like him anyway or in some cases because of it.

Peter, just wondering: are you aware of how debunked that whole Bain is Bad thing really is? (Even by people who are Obama toadies?) Are you also aware of how much Obama and this government is guilty of the same thing you’re accusing Romney of–except in his case, he’s wasting tax dollars not money from investors? Are you aware of how unfriendly the tax code is in this country which makes outsourcing such a viable option? Are you aware of the fact that unions have institutionalized mediocrity to such an alarming extent while extorting unsustainable benefits that companies (who are earning money for their shareholders–as they are supposed to–money which nearly everyone in this company who owns stocks or retirement plans or mutual funds benefits from) have often had no choice?

I’m going to consider two options: either you don’t know all of this because you trust the media and have never had any other perspective offered you.

Or you willfully want to deny anything which doesn’t fit your pretty little picture with a haloed Obama in the center.

And as far as being a “Stooge,” as Steve says. Sorry. Won’t fly. Guy has been successful at pretty much everything he’s ever touched. Great academic record. All the Republicans Calling on Romney to Release His Tax Returns

The chorus of conservatives calling for Mitt Romney to release more of his tax returns has grown from being mostly those with an ax to grind to elected officials and the conservative establishment. Here’s who’s on the record wanting Romney’s taxes on the record so far:

Rick Perry. The Texas governor told the Associated Press Tuesday, “I’m a big believer that no matter who you are, or what office you’re running for, you should be as transparent as you can be with your tax returns and other aspects of your life so that people have the appropriate ability to judge your background and what have you… I think anyone running for office, if they get asked within reason to give people background about what they have been doing, including tax returns, should do that.”

Ron Paul. “Politically, I think that would help him… In the scheme of things politically, you know, it looks like releasing tax returns is what the people want,” the former presidential candidate told Politico Tuesday.

Brit Hume. “Anytime it’s an issue between disclosure and non-disclosure, you always wonder whether it’s better just to put it out there,” the Fox News commentator told Bill O’Reilly Monday night.

No Jay I don’t have to wonder why because I DON’T CARE!!!

Questions Jay:

1. What information do you hope to gather from Romney’s tax returns?
2. Would you change your opinion of him if he released his returns?
3. If for example he gave a lot to charity, would that lead you to change your mind about him and potentially vote for him???
4. What if he paid a really high effective tax rate? Would you consider voting for him then??

If you answer No and No to questions three and four, than why do YOU care??

Answer…Because Romney is a Republican you automatically can’t stand him and his wealth. Therefore lets make up a bunch of non stories to try and make him look bad.

No offense Jay, but this is pretty bush league. Who cares how much Romney or anyone for that matter makes…I think our country has far bigger issues…don’t you????

Jay, I know why Romney will not release his tax records, at least for now. Obama will use it to show how rich Romney is and that he’s out of touch from the average American and that he will only protect the rich. Again, I find this thing a distraction because Obama refuses to talk specifics about his policies, if the average American knew what Obama really meant by spreading the wealth around, he would lose his re-election bid. I sure wish politicans had the courage to speak policy issues and direction instead of personal attacks…..

B, your fellow Americans know all that stuff too. Hell, Obama confessed half of it himself in his two books.

But they, unlike you, have decided it doesn’t matter. I know you can’t accept that reality. Because if you accept it, then you have to also have to accept the fact that it is not Obama who is out of touch with America. It is you. America has changed, and you have not, and it is now you who is out of place.

That fact cannot be allowed to penetrate. You will believe whatever is necessary — birth certificate, media conspiracy, whitey tapes, etc. — to keep that thought at bay.

They BOTH suck

I wouldn’t claim that Romney said Obama need to learn to be an American, because that would be a lie.

Maybe you just made a mistake

yeah that is it

josef . I am out of here to go do a project……..

I was an Art major in college…… did drawing, Lithography, painting, clay, sculpture…….but my favorite that I did the most of was hand blown glass… I got pretty good at it. My roommate from college is a world renowned glass artist.

I sold glass around the northeast including in a gift shop in Rockefeller center.

I do stained glass, and pride myself in that all I make, I create the designs.

Currently I am redoing a ranch…so off to work on the bathroom marble design.

Creativity is a wonderful release !

Hey! They were suggesting some reads for you. I got one. If you haven’t already read it, John Kennedy Toole’s “A Confederacy of Dunces.” Best thing since “Don Quijote” and guaranteed to give you a thigh slapping laugh in your time of troubles…It sure did us in ours…

I knew what he meant, however he was being dishonest while speaking of others being dishonest

He probably doesn’t even see the irony.

Heck it is early in the game. The mud slinging, lies and bs hasn’t even really started on either side.
