American history, as told through the two Romneys

mitt2010

georgerom

The political debate continues to be dominated by questions involving GOP nominee Mitt Romney and his financial history, more particularly his refusal to release any tax information other than his 2010 return and an estimate of his 2011 taxes.

The decision to withhold the information has begun to perplex even conservative pundits such as William Kristol (”It’s crazy”) to George Will (”He must have calculated that there are higher costs in releasing them).” In many cases, unflattering comparisons are being drawn between Romney and his father, George, who as a candidate for the GOP nomination in 1968 began the modern practice of tax disclosure by releasing 12 years of his returns.

While that debate rages, I thought it might be interesting to study what we know of the two Romneys not for what it might tell us about their character, openness, etc., but about the time and place in which each man lived.

Take a look at the thumbnail financial descriptions posted on the right. The younger Romney, as a passive, non-working investor now drawing upon his success at Bain Capital, collected income in 2010 amounting to 439 times the median household income of his fellow Americans.

His father, during a 12-year period in which he mainly worked as chairman and president of American Motors, earned an average annual income that was 44 times that of the median household income of his fellow Americans. Adjusted for inflation, his average income of $247,743 in 1965 dollars would be $1.7 million today.

In the ’50s and ’60s, a period considered the economic heyday of a free and capitalist post-war America, George Romney paid 37 percent of his income in federal taxes.

By 2010, Romney’s son paid a total of 13.9 percent of his income in federal taxes, this in an America that is supposedly well on its way to becoming a socialist state, with a confiscatory federal government intent on stealing the wealth of its highest earners.

Reality, in other words, directly contradicts mythology, but with little apparent effect. The fact that the “socialist” meme not only survives but thrives despite its obvious absurdity is, I would argue, testimony to the perception-altering power of propaganda. Or as the elder Romney might put it, a case of brainwashing.

My wife and I were discussing that very point over the weekend, but we concluded that there *had* to be something damaging in them — otherwise, why would McCain have chosen Palin over Romney as a running mate? Romney had a full term as Governor under his belt, had managed a much larger budget, had extensive business experience (so we’ve been told), and we just couldn’t see what Palin had over all that EXCEPT for her gender.

Either McCain was more desperate than we’ve been led to believe or else there really is something damaging in the tax returns. Or maybe both. :D

Robert is entitled to express his opinion. He’s also entitled to be wrong, of course, and in this case he is making full use of that right.

For example, much of the elder Romney’s income in those years was also capital gains, in the form of stock options from AMC.

In addition, much of the younger Romney’s income is NOT capital gains, but rather income that he earned as commission in his private equity business that through the carried interest loophole is misclassified as capital gains.

Third, the “they already paid corporate tax” argument would be much stronger if so many corporations had not, in fact, paid taxes.

Fourth, the extremely favored treatment given capital gains in the modern tax code is part of the basic point of the comparison in the first place.

I don’t think you’re looking at history from the correct perspective on this one. On the surface, they are both one and the same. They are capitalists who are/were good at what they did during their era in US history. The real story is the de-evolution of what we call capitalism. During the elder Romney’s period, capitalist did not bite the hand that fed them, i.e. they understood and realized that a strong country allowed them to benefit from their endeavors. Nowadays, the top class has taken capitalism hostage and removed most all teeth that protected the system from greed. The current idea of “every man for himself” would not have been welcomed back in the earlier days when capitalism was at it’s best.

George Romney had to work his way up the financial ladder to make it to the top.

Mitt was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and, as such, hasen’t a clue as to what sort of financial cares average Americans have. He went to the best schools, had the best clothes, the best cars, in short – the best of everything.

It’s not suprising that his true allegiance is to the rich, since these people are the only ones he’s ever really known or identified with.

So, if you want a President of the rich, by the rich and for the rich, vote for Romney.

The difference between Obama’s BC and Romney’s tax returns is no one has certified Romney’s tax returns have no smoking gun pointed at them. I agree with George Will…what in the world is he hiding? Much ado about nothing if there is nothing damaging there and he won’t release them just to be…what?…ornery? He could let the air out of Obama’s balloon by releasing them if there is nothing there and make a big deal about it. But Romney is sure putting up a fuss about them.

1. Mitt didn’t write the tax code, our current and former presidents and congresses did

2. Individual tax rates are meaningless since all the corporate taxes paid by mitt are not seen

3. This is because mitt is an investor and George was a wage earner

4. So mitt is likely paying a higher effective rate than his dad if his investments are in stocks, but you can’t tell that from personal tax returns

Conclusion: jays blog post not accurate or detailed enough to be relevant to the dialogue about tax rates

Those in the middle-class will become fewer, and then Romney, et. al., will pull the rug out from under the once middle-class, now the poor, by eliminating Social Security, Medicare and other important government programs. However, if the rich aren’t careful and get too greedy too fast, even the dim bulbs among us might eventually catch on and begin a movement to take government back — by any means available.

One could conclude that he might have income from Bain that conflicts with his denials that he stopped working there in February, 2002. On the other hand, the highest FIT rate in 1960 was 91% while the highest FIT rate now is 35%. The capital gains rate was 20% (I believe) then and is 15% now. I don’t know if tax law in 1960 had a carried interest loophole. In order to make a real comparison we would need to apply the same rates to the inflation-adjusted dollars, no?

The real question here is should people with just trade stocks pay a lower tax rate.

I can see having a lower tax rate if you are “investing” in a company.. but in todays world of stock trading, the only time people are truly investing in a company is when they buy at the initial offering ( or secondary etc ). At these times, the company is actually getting $$ the buyers paid for the company’s shares. The company and then uses this money to help their business out. All other trades are just gambling and the company doesnt get a cut.

Your argument holds water if the investment is to help the company. However, most stock purchases are “investments” hoping that the investors will benefit. Home ownership has the same result (at least it did before the bubble burst).

People who object to capital gains taxes by saying that the tax has already been paid once when the initial money was earned have an empty argument. We pay taxes repeatedly (year-over-year) all the time. One example: ad valorem tax on a vehicle. We also pay taxes on interest income.

Your fiscal & economic understanding is shockingly abysmal (but unfortunately par for the course for most shills and propogandists for liberals).

- Anyone who buys shares after offering is as much an “investor” in a company as the original purchaser. The sale transfers ownerships of that investment (and subsequent gains or losses) the the purchaser who now has MORE stake in the positive / negative outcomes than does the seller.

- As for comparisons of the tax rates, there is already a distinction between “investors” versus “traders” or sellers. With a modicum of research, you can find:

“Short-term capital gains are taxed at the investor’s ordinary income tax rate, and are defined as investments held for a year or less before being sold. Long-term capital gains, which apply to assets held for more than one year, are taxed at a lower rate than short-term gains.”

Profits from short-term gains are ALREADY taxed at the same rate as ordinary income (just as are gambling winnings).

- Finally, even the Capital Gains Tax Rates are “progressive” since the lowest two income brackets for long-term gains only pay a 5% rate versus all other filers who pay 15%. So (yet again) those at higher tax brackets are ALREADY paying higher rates even in the case of capital gains.

Happy to share some facts among your opinion…..

Here’s something to ponder: many years ago now I saw the argument that the “Income Tax” was being illegally assessed against the wages earned for services provided. Interesting thought…that all the working people in the USA are being taxed illegally, because their paychecks are not income, but wages.

Capital gains, is that welfare? I guess not, the poor never receive it. But it is money given away from one American to another and so far they have not declared it a tax, but in the spirit of recent stretches seems to me we could call it welfare. I not even sure it is that large a stretch.

I would be interested in see as Romney’s fortune increases how the poor have made out during this era. Socialism is a equaling of classes, we are all comrades. Did not I read that poverty is at a all time high, as a population, how proud we must be. 2) Who paid more money in income tax during 2010, Mitt Romney or Warren Buffett? I think the answer is Mitt Romney even though Warren Buffett has a net worth about 200 times greater than Mitt Romney. Can you please confirm that? Interesting news story there if you think about it.

My point is that I do think a wealthy person can be bought. I have not nor will knock Romney’s wealth. With that said, people are bought in various forms every day without money.

I am not saying he doesn’t love this country, even though I did post about him taking some of his money offshore. I do not think he has done anything illegal, but I WOULD NOT DO IT……. period

And he like the vast majority of politicians have egos, so I doubt this is all for mom, apply pie and chevrolets.

But it does sound good.

Heck Obama can make more than 350k with his credentials. Dog him all you like, but he can be working at a high powered firm as we speak making big BANK. He like Romney has an ego and will do what it takes to get elected.

Using that for “love of country” idea, one can argue with the Obama’s net worth vs Romney’s, Obama “loves” the US more because he doesn’t have that big of a cushion. But I wouldn’t claim that because to me it sounds pretty stupid.

Another piece by Jay to deflect the reality of the misery that Obama is inflicting upon this country. That is what Jay and the Obama campaign have been reduced to since Obama has nothing else to offer. He has made a bad situation worse. Anything to divert what a complete and abject failure the Obama administration has been. Innuendo is the calling card of Chicago politics and apparently for Jay and the Democratic party. It doesn’t matter if it is factual or if it is make believe, just as long as they introduce doubt. They are hinging the whole Obama campaign on the premise that if they throw out enough garbage on Romney that the swing voters will believe them and turn the election. We do know that Obama will lie. We do know that Obama has made the American economy worse. We do know that record numbers of people in this country are on government assistance because of Obama. What perplexes me even more is that supposedly intelligent people fall for these small-time political tactics and in that way perhaps I give the American people more credit than they deserve. Despite what the Obama campaign might want voters to believe, Mitt Romney’s record as a businessman is stellar. The tax records he has not released and the multimillion-dollar bank accounts Romney holds (including the recently closed Swiss account) do not tarnish his success; they simply prove it.
A good executive in the private sector turns a profit for his company—period. Mitt Romney did just that for Bain Capital, whether he left in 1999 or 2002, and he was handsomely compensated for his work. There is controversy as to whether laying off thousands of workers and outsourcing labor to foreign countries led to Bain’s fortunes during Romney’s reign, but in the world of private equity, these practices are both common and well within the government regulations that Romney now ironically claims are so problematic to a successful American economy.
Considering his accomplishments, American voters should not be surprised that the Republicans’ blue-blooded, white collared nominee is running on his business record alone. It is understandable that he does not cite his actual governing experience–where he successfully implemented a health care mandate and created fewer jobs than 46 other states. Instead, Mitt Romney (the business opportunist) has been relegated to preaching that America’s negative balance sheet offers him a chance to do what he does best: financial engineering, the euphemistic term for what was once known as hostile takeover.
But there is a major crack in Mitt Romney’s foundational premise: America is not a business, and even if it were, it would be the kind of struggling business that corporate executive Romney chopped up and sold for spare parts—or worse, declared bankrupt. These are not options for America the country, and that is why CEO Romney is not the right man for the job of President. Maybe Governor Romney can still give it a shot.

The real rate is more like 12 or 13% if you count the ones who have just quit looking. Anything but the economy….. women, Sandra Fluke, birth control pills, latinos, Mexican illegals, tax returns, out sourcing of jobs, Bain Capital,…… anything but the economy. But it won’t go away, will it libs? It just hangs around like a 50# weight on your back. The elephant in the living room….. the emperor with no clothes. Bookman won’t touch it…. Bozo ignores it. But it is still there. Wouldn’t you be humiliated as a president if you still had domestic growth at 1.6%. Any true American would. Today’s society reminds me very much of The Hunger Games. Where only a few rule (ruling class); and the rest, (99%) are left hungry and starving and have to kill each other of for a few scapes of food.

That’s because the ruling class LIKED to keep us hungry and fighting amongst ourselves — that way they took the onus off of them, and put it on us.

Its amazing that with record drop losses in the past TEN YEARS, (way before Obama set foot in office); how some people can say that by further cutting the “job creators” tax rates create jobs!

Where are all these jobs after 10+ years of this way of thinking? Why are some people so mired in rhetoric that they can’t see the forest for the trees?

Remember it? McCain said during his campaign if they kept talking about the economy they would lose the election. Well, Obama later quoted McCain’s quote in an ad of his own. Then the Mittster intentionally deleted Obama’s reference to McCain, and went with an attack ad making it as if Obama had said these words himself. This is the pinnacle of sleaze. When Willard was asked by reporters about the obvious outright lying ad, he said “Well, what is sauce of the goose is sauce for the gander.” What the hell does that mean? Somebody is hitting the sauce alright, and it ain’t Barack. The Mittster is slimy, greasy, dirty, filthy, dishonest, a thug, cheat and liar. He would tie his own mother on the roof of his car and travel across the continent if it would win him the election. His is a despictable life form. Now, please excuse me as I go shower.

From the Weekly Standard;

Jeff Zients is the head of the Obama administration’s Office of Management and Budget. “Like Mitt Romney, the man who would unseat his boss, Mr. Zients (rhymes with science) got his professional start at Bain Consulting,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Zients has only praise, it would seem, for Bain:

After graduating in 1988, Mr. Zients started as a consultant at Bain & Co. in Boston, where he “fell in love with Bain’s culture, teamwork…and analytical rigor,” according to a Bain alumni newsletter. (He didn’t work with Mr. Romney, who already had left to start Bain Capital.)

At Bain, Mr. Zients reported to Mary Menell, four years his senior, who became his wife, with whom he now has four children. They were married in Mrs. Zients’s homeland of South Africa, with Nelson Mandela, her parents’ friend, in attendance.

Mr. Zients left Bain to return to Washington and become an entrepreneur. He helped run Advisory Board Co., a research firm, and its spinoff, Corporate Executive Board, which together grew to more than 1,000 employees, and launched an initial public offering for each. In 2002, Fortune magazine named Mr. Zients in its list of the 40 richest Americans under 40. His net worth is conservatively estimated at around $200 million.

As I have said before, Obama knows his base and he is playing people like apparently Jay for fools. Or perhaps they are like Obama and don’t care what the truth is as long as they can win. Bain certainly seems to have touched many, many people in Obama’s inner circle just as the big banks did with people like Geithner and the many lobbyists he has hired (even though he said he would never hire a lobbyist).

2. Lets play fair children. After Mitt finally shows his taxes for at lest as many as the President we can then demand both of their college transcripts and writings. We can then request any reports of misbehavior or merit from senior and junior high school. And lastly any and all drawing from kindergarten must be presented. To bad they did not do ultrasounds in the 40’s, 50’s or 60’s then we could investigate them in the womb too.

3. When Reagan started taxing unemployment compensation the argument was that this money had already been taxed. If that didn’t work for the small amount received for unemployment then it should not work for capital gains. Hell, you only get about $25.00 a day for Jury Duty and that’s taxed (Also Reagan). If the men and women in the military are taxed at the regular rate then the millionaires and billionaires whose money and interest they are protecting need to pay not only as much but more.

Furthermore, the reason that richest Americans pay more of the tax these days is because they also collect a lot more of the income than they used to, as the Romneys illustrate quite well. It’s not because they’re being taxed more heavily. Again, look at the percentage paid by the two Romneys. Mr. Kerry’s office dismissed Mr. DeMint’s head-count, saying that vote counts taken months before a proposed vote are “just a snapshot of where our politics are in this instant.”

“No letter or whip count changes the fact that rock-ribbed Republican businesses and the military and every living Republican secretary of state say that this needs to happen, and that’s why it’s a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’ for the Law of the Sea,” said Kerry spokeswoman Jodi Seth.

Ms. Seth said the senator’s decided long ago to hold off on requesting a vote on the treaty until after the November elections because “right now we’re in the middle of a white hot political campaign season where ideology is running in overdrive.”

“That’s why Senator Kerry made it clear from day one that there wouldn’t be a vote before the election and until everyone’s had the chance to evaluate the treaty on the facts and the merits away from the politics of the moment,” she said.

A married filing joint return would be able to claim two standard exemptions and one standard deduction for a total of $18,700 that can be earned in wages without paying any federal income taxes. And remember, the standard exemption and standard deduction are the ones that all tax return filers are allowed to claim, even if they make millions of dollars in earnings. But, at least some of those people that made less than $19,000 had to pay federal income taxes, right. Well, yes, 9 million returns with AGI’s of less than $19,000 paid some amount of federal income taxes.

Here is the results from the Bian capitol deal and the Steel company they bought and closed.

Our ruling

Obama’s ad, and the news release announcing it, packed a lot of claims about Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital and how it handled its investment in a Kansas City steel mill.

We are checking this claim: “After purchasing the company, Mitt Romney and his partners loaded it with debt, closed the Kansas City plant and walked away with a healthy profit, leaving hundreds of employees out of work with their pensions in jeopardy.”

We found, through corporate filings, interviews and investigations by other news organizations, that the statement is accurate but needs some clarification. First, it’s true that Bain added significantly to GST’s debt load while paying dividends to itself. The plant’s closure, however, happened after Romney had left daily operations at Bain, though he led Bain during six years of its majority investment in the plant. And other, outside factors were at work, making the steel industry a tough business. Steel prices were low and electricity costs were high, and those forces drove other steel mills out of business around the same time.

The statement’s last two claims are solid: Bain (and Romney) made a profit from taking over GST, and the employees lost many benefits their union had negotiated, including supplemental pension payments. The federal government had to step in to shore up the fund.

We rate the claim Mostly True.

Bankruptcy due to a prolonged illnes of you or a family member

Bankruptcy due to your job being shipped overseas, or if you work for yourself –

–Bankruptcy due to no one having the money to “buy your wares”.

Bankruptcy due to some investment banker asconding of your money and going to South America to live in luxury.

Bankruptcy due to a catclysmic stock market crash that affects you because you, unwisely, put all your money in MItt For Pres stock.

Bankruptcy due to your out of control spending

Bankruptcy due to divorce (’cause your wife/significant other finally leaves you because she/he’s sick and tired of your crap AND he/she takes all your money and spends it on that no-good tax-dodging Mexican illegal yard guy who was cutting MORE than your grass).

Jay – the wife and I are small business people. Because we are an S-Corp the income shows on our personal return. We take all the legal deductions and have one of the most prestigious accounting firms on the South side of town. We still pay over 30% rate. We dont take vacation more than a day or two at a time and never stop working except for a few hours in the evening (I cheat and blog some during the day, as you know).

We are in the group Obama wants to raise our rate. You don’t hear me saying take it from Romney or someone else wealthier than I. They worked to get what they have, just like my wife and I have done.

I don’t need the government to spread my money around. It’s mine, not the government’s, and I don’t like at all what they are doing with it or want to do with it.

Those less fortunate than I – I’m ok with asistance to those incapable of working, but the idea that capable people are on the government assistance when they could be working, compared to how I work, is repulsive.

This whole fake idea that higher income taxes on the rich is going to have any real effect on our economy really proves how unintelligent Democrats are…

Higher taxes on the rich is merely a political issue, Obama could really care less, but if he didn’t say he wanted to raise taxes on the rich he wouldn’t get elected. That simple.

Creating jobs is the issue this election, and everyone knows taxing the wealthy doesn’t create jobs for anyone. If you actually believe that taxing the wealthy creates jobs that’s scary.

“There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. ”

OK, here’s the entire Fright-Wing Neoliberal Mantra. Know it. Own it. If any of this sounds vaguely familiar to you, it’s because it’s what we’ve (and most of the World) has been living under for the past 40+ years. Most attributed to Milton Friedman –the arch-Neoliberalist.

Also heard on Lush Limpballs every day.

The supremacy of the free market. The market was to rule supreme, unrestrained by the intervention of government, labor unions, or anything else (other than corporate monopoly power) that constrained the operation of market forces, regardless of how much social disorder, suffering or exploitation results. Any undesirable effects are to be ascribed simply to “unidentified interventions” which, when they were identified, could be eliminated, and the problem solved thereby. Monopolies were simply assumed, against all evidence, to be self-limiting (though no one ever managed to explain how DeBeers Consolidated Mines had managed to create and maintain a worldwide monopoly on the diamond business for more than a century).

Cutting, and eliminating when possible, expenditure for social services. Again, in the name of reducing government interference in the market, it was not necessary for government to involve itself in social welfare programs. To explain the obvious suffering that results, it is therefore claimed that when the poor suffer, it is due to their own laziness that they do not better themselves. That the accumulation of money was equivalent to the accumulation of power, with its attendant distortion of the functionings of the market, was not a concern. That this led inevitably to the disempowerment of the poor was not a concern – the poor were blamed for their condition by claiming their “inferiority” or “bad decisions.” Social justice was a non-issue.

Deregulation. If government is interfering in the market, it will only lead to a loss of profits, and therefore, government regulation had to be assumed to be bad. Therefore, it has to be reduced or eliminated, even in monopolistic situations. One neoliberal, Grover Norquist, an official in the George W. Bush administration commented that he wanted to reduce the size of government to the point where he “could drown it in the bathtub” – and then go on to do so.

Privatization. Since government is assumed, as a given, to be inefficient, lazy, bloated and uneconomical in the provisioning of goods and services, it was only reasonable to presume that private enterprise could and would perform the delivery of services in a more efficient manner, and hence any activity that delivers goods or services to citizens should and must be privatized. Never was an explanation offered for the contrary incentive of capitalism – that the capitalist’s basic profit-driven incentive is to charge as much money as possible for providing as few goods and services as possible.

Elimination of the concept of “Community” or the “Common Good.” Since this is antithetical to the notion of privatization and “rugged individualism,” the concept of the commons (the air we must all breathe, the water we must all drink, etc.) to them, reeks faintly of Communism, it is assumed to be bad, wrong, and hence is oppositional to the “neoliberal” agenda. Such notions as public health, public education, etc., are to be replaced by private initiative, as anything else is simply considered to be a manifestation of lassitude, indolence and governmental dependence.

Such as it is. This, in a nutshell, is the “disease” that infects America, yea the World.

It is time for Obama to come clean with the american people. No more hiding and lying. No more deception, No more double talk. No more deflection. Let us have the proof. If he is not the most dishonest, the most secretive president ever, then It is time to release his college transcripts. It is time to tell us why his social security number is from a state he never lived in. It is time he explained why his selective service card is an apparent forgery. It is time he explained why he has employed an armada of attorneys to keep his vital and personal records hidden and not available to the public. He wants our trust, he should demonstrate his commitment to the truth and return that trust. What is he hiding? Is he a US citizen? Did he attend college as a foreign exchange student?. Did he live in the foreign students dorms while at Harvard? What were his High School grades like? Was he an affirmative action student? Who paid for his college education? Was he a drug dealer? We know he was a heavy user. We know of his communist party connections. Was he ever a member of the communist party? How come so many of his friends and acquainences are communists and or anti american blame the US for everything flag haters. Come on now, communists are scarce as hens teeth and he knows a lot of them? Why? Come on folks. Why did he resign from the Illinois Bar Association while he was being investigated by the Bar for fraudulent errors on his application for membership. It is past time to vet the man in the white house. It is past time to find out who this man is that has his finger on the nucleur button. I mean really, we know more about Mitt Romney than we do about Barack Obama. We know where Mitt was born, when, who his parents were. He as has a track record of success in every endeavor he has ever been in charge of. We know who he is? He was hired as head of the Salt Lake City Olympics, to bail them out of trouble which he did. He was responsible for the success of many businesses. His businesses created thousands of new jobs. He obtained two degrees at the same time. He was governor of a state that had serious financial problems and he left them with budget financial reserves. Heck, people he went to school and university with remember him unlike Obama who no one remembers even being there. If Obama has nothing to hide, fine. Put the documents out there. In until he does I will think he has something to hide and I will bet it is something so bad, so derogatory that he is scared to death for it to be known. I believe his followers are scared too, which is why the present deflection campaign to focus on Romneys tax returns. The DNC sent out a memo to all to deflect, deflect, deflect. Watch the left, keep your eye on the left hand folks.

JM … … It’s ridiculous. One of the things that bothered me about the former administration is that you knew every time the man spoke, the word “terrorists” was going to be the subject. He didn’t talk about anything else!

Obama, after only 3 1/2 years, has become just as predictable. He just has to talk about the people who have “too much” and demonize them. The strings on the puppets simply wont work if he doesn’t play that card.

He takes credit for anything good (which is rare), but he seems to forget that people are struggling, the economy is suffering- and it’s on his watch. But, where does he place the blame?

He’s a smooth talker and puppet master.

I want him to admit we already have the most progressive taxing structure in the universe and increasing it is not the answer. Don’t bet on either of us giving in.

My remark was in the context of you staing the black population is 13% and, my understanding, would have little impact on the election outcome.

My remark was, I can seldom watch a political show where there is not a mouthpiece talking about this that and the other affecting the black community. Decisions affect us all, not just blacks. And for one, I’m past being tired of mouthpieces framing issues as if blacks deserve priority or are owed more than others.

Wash. Post Fact Checker: Romney’s effective tax rate is higher than about 80% of Americans paying taxes. Also, one ”LITTLE” thing the libs such as Jay seem to ALWAYS leave out when talking about Romney and his taxes: his tax burden is less than it would be because (unlike most libs—especially the politicians) he is personally generous with his money—he gives a lot (about $7 million in 2010 and 2011) to charity!!!

Also: Romney paid both 15% (capital gains) AND corporate income taxes (usually 30%+) on his investments, as all do.

Here’s what it boils down to: In 2011 (I know, not the 2010 that Jay was referring to, but close enough), 2011 the Romneys paid out 42 percent of their income in taxes and charity.

Also: When it comes to the libs obsession with Romney’s wealth:

According to 24/7 Wall Street, many U.S. Presidents were among the wealthiest (using 2011 dollars) Americans of their time. In fact, according to 24/7’s figures, Romney would be far from the richest president in U.S. history.

That honor would go to our first President, George Washington. With his vast amount of land (approximately 60,000 acres), his wife’s inheritance, and given that his presidential salary was two percent of the total U.S. federal budget in 1789, 24/7 Wall Street estimates that Washington was an elite “one-percenter” with a net-worth of about $525 million.

Thomas Jefferson was also a “one-percenter.” With his architecturally extravagant home, Monticello, containing 11,000 square feet of living space and perched on a 5,000 acre estate, Jefferson had an estimated worth of $212 million.

James Madison and Andrew Jackson were both worth north of $100 million, while John Adams, James Monroe, and John Quincy Adams were all worth over $20 million.

Teddy Roosevelt was born into significant wealth and was the beneficiary of a large trust fund, which, of course would make him one of the most reviled of the “one-percenters.” His net worth was estimated to be $125 million. This means that if Abraham Lincoln hadn’t been such a slacker (worth less than $1 million), Mount Rushmore could have been named “One Percent Peak.”

Teddy’s fifth cousin and later U.S. President, Franklin Roosevelt, was also born into privilege that qualified him as a “one-percenter.” As a youth, he made frequent trips to Europe, attended an elite boarding school, and later went to Harvard. The architect of the New Deal was also the beneficiary of a large inheritance. He had an estimated wealth of $60 million.

However, each of these pales in comparison to the Kennedy family fortune. Preceding his father Joe Kennedy in death, John F. Kennedy was unable to inherit his father’s vast wealth. And vast it was. Through stock, industrial, commodity, and real estate investing, along with what some have deemed to be illicit means, Joe Kennedy accumulated a truly enormous amount of wealth. In 1957, when Forbes magazine published its first list of the richest Americans, Kennedy’s fortune was estimated to be between $200 and $400 million ($1.6 to $3.5 billion in today’s dollars). This placed him in Forbes’ top 20.

If alive today, perhaps President Kennedy, when addressing the Occupiers (if he were allowed to speak) would utter something like, “Ask not what your country can do for you, just ask a ‘one-percenter’ like me!”

Thanks

Democrats Mock GOP For Protecting Own Health Care In Repeal Vote

July 16th, 2012
8:22 pm

WASHINGTON — Democrats are mocking Republicans in the House of Representatives for voting to repeal the health care reform law and keep their own enhanced medical care.

When Congress passed the health care law, it required members of Congress to get their insurance on exchanges with the rest of the public. But in voting to repeal that law, Republicans and a handful of Democrats were also voting to go back to the old system where the lawmakers get a sweeter deal than most of the rest of the country.

Intellectual curiosity. It seems to be dead in this modern GOP.

They used to have numerous men in positions of power who prided themselves on their superior intellect.

Now it seems they do not value it at all. Instead their mental giants are George W. Bush and Andrew Breitbart. (Oops, in the last case make that were) Shakespeare??? Who was he?

They’ve cheered on he removal of the humanities (We don’t need no stinking music and art appreciation) and physical education from our public schools.

To the point where they now ridicule accepted science and want to teach unintelligent design.

Even their MDs (Frist and Price) appear to be low brow nuts…

Jay Bookman writes: “the reason that richest Americans pay more of the tax these days is because they also collect a lot more of the income than they used to”
—————————————————————————————————————
Is this really true, or true to anywhere near the degree you think it is Jay? And by “used to” do you meant the 1990s, or perhaps the 1950s?

Most of the wealthy derive increases in their wealth from stock market gains. But the stock market hasn’t really gone anywhere in over a decade.

Also, lower marginal income tax rates and capital gains and dividend rates also mean that less income is hidden. Marginal tax rates were very high in the 1950s. But the 1950s was before the computer age. The very wealthy in the 1950s very easily could hide income and not report it. There wasn’t a computer trail of every transaction one undertook. There were also massive tax shelters as well where income ended up being categorized as something else.

So it’s hard to really know just how much the income of the rich has risen compared to past times as opposed to how much of the income is now out in the open and actually reported compared to past times.

Is this the “class act” everybody’s praising? The guy who voted for the “looming military cuts” and now wants to blame Obama for them?

Some of you really have a distorted notion of what a “class act” is. McCain is every bit the nasty, embittered old man that he was even before he secured the nomination. In fact, his pick of Palin, contrary to the notion that he was inspired, was a deliberate attempt to snub his opponents in the nomination race. Even if republicans win the senate, they won’t have a filibuster proof majority like the democrats did

And what makes you think Republicans will play by the rules? In fact, McConnell has already said that he will use reconciliation, wherein a simple majority is sufficient, to repeal Obamacare. And if that tactic can be used in that case, it can be used in others. One of the huge mistakes the Senate Democrats have made is to put too much faith in Harry Reid, who does play by the rules, thereby permitting a Senate minority to veto just about everything.

The proposal defeated on Monday was a scaled-back version of a measure that was blocked by Republicans in 2010.

The centerpiece of the legislation would force tax-exempt “501(c)” groups, which include labor unions and chambers of commerce, to publicly report any donor giving $10,000 or more to the Federal Election Commission.

McCain: Don’t expect GOP cooperation on legislation for the rest of this year
By Michael O’Brien – 03/22/10

Democrats shouldn’t expect much cooperation from Republicans the rest of this year, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) warned Monday.

McCain and another Republican senator decried the effect health reform legislation has had on the Senate, a day after the House passed the upper chamber’s bill.

GOP senators emerged Monday to caution that the health debate had taken a toll on the institution, warning of little work between parties the rest of this year.

“There will be no cooperation for the rest of the year,” McCain said during an interview Monday on an Arizona radio affiliate. “They have poisoned the well in what they’ve done and how they’ve done it.”

Repealing obamacare via reconciliation is by the rules

And so would be a drastic cutting of Social Security benefits. And so would be a conversion of Medicare to a voucher system. There aren’t many things that aren’t “spending bills.”

But the Democrats respected the filibuster in passing Obamacare, working to achieve a 60-vote majority. That’s more than a Republican majority would ever do.

And I’ll remind you of what Bill Frist did as Senate majority leader. He threatened to discard all the rules if the Republicans didn’t get their way with Bush’s SC nominees—the so-called nuclear option. And Frist resembles a strait-laced Puritan in comparison to the smarmy Mitch McConnell.

Get rid of all the preferences in the tax codes and Mitt Romney’s effective tax rate would go up. Also have to remember that if Mr. Romney is tithing 10% of his income to charity (LDS), that is a lower taxable income amount to actually tax (he would be itemizing). No note is made in article of whether the “income” you quote is AGI (what many quote as income, but that is not what you pay tax on). But you get a tax code riddled with these things when your nearest Rep and Senator are for sale and bake such things into the code after lobbying. Don’t blame Romney, blame the system.
Teresa Heinz Kerry made several multiples of Mitt’s income and paid less in tax, her money is mainly in Municipal bonds. And no one every hears peep 1 about Ted Kennedy ever paying taxes (also tied up in muni bonds)…interest free.

Revealing the content of tax returns, including all attachments, is important because it informs voters:

it will give voters a better idea of any potential conflicts of interest, specifically with regard to any foreign and/or international entities.

it will enable voters to make an assessment of a candidate’s beliefs w/regard to charity.

it can enlighten voters w/regard to whether or not the candidate has been living w/i or beyond his means.

yeah, I read about that…

http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/07/15/sarah-palin-still-waiting-for-romney-invite-to-tampa.html

The Mitt Romney campaign hasn’t invited Sarah Palin to speak at — or even attend — next month’s Republican National Convention, in Tampa, Newsweek’s Peter Boyer reported.

[...]

Palin surely knows that the official schedule isn’t set, but that didn’t prevent her from pouncing at Boyer’s inquiry, saying she suspects she’s “not the only one accepting consequences for calling out both sides of the aisle” and that “in accepting those consequences… you don’t invite yourself to the Big Dance.”

Palin has never shied away away from an invitation to knock the Republican establishment, and she has a knack for turning those knocks into rallying cries. Boyer gifted her with just such an opportunity, which turned into a dare to the Romney camapign: Want to fire up the right wing? Watch this.

I dunno, it all sounds like pro wrestling; I think Palin and Romney and all these rich, powerful wads-o’-f### know exactly what they’re doing to try to keep us poor, dumbass voters thinking the stories are more interesting than they really are. But I’m cynical that way.

well yeah, actually, this is the time of year when they DO start to pay attention. Of course it’s not enough to allow Obama to coast to victory, but it keeps him ahead for now, in this matchup, and Romney knows that by the end of the summer he’s going to need to have some good news cycles to turn it around.

(and yes, I realize that having a rich crime-boss benefactor taking out a hundred million or so worth of ads will help Romney somewhat, but swing-vote people… well, they’re dumb, generally, but they aren’t quite THAT dumb that they they’ll vote solely on what the attack ads tell ‘em.)

Jay,

It was good to see you “go there” regarding the propaganda. The biggest problem we face is anger-porn (i.e. talk radio), which is designed to poke, poke, poke the frustration in much the same way sexual pornography is used to poke a different part of the brain. We’re out of balance – the rich are using their extraordinary power to gobble up more and more.

Look at those parroting the right-wing talking points right here – “He is comparing George Romney’s income tax to Mitt’s capital gains tax. Mitt has already paid income tax on that money,” says Robert. Are you kidding me? No, he hasn’t – that’s utter nonsense. Investment income has become the great new tax dodge, allowing for incredible accumulation of wealth for those connected.

What’s even more amazing is how these same posters are the first to cry about the deficit/debt. Does it ever occur to any of them that as the middle gets pushed DOWNWARD, more government services will be required simply to sustain livability?

One last point: If you simply take the 1980 minimum wage ($3.10) and multiply it by the value of a 1980 dollar ($3.57) you come up with a MINIMUM WAGE north of $11 now. But we can’t have that, because having 44 times the average income isn’t enough for today’s titan. No, no, it has to be 400-500 times the average. Capitalism cannot survive without a thriving middle class.

The last comment said he has already paid income tax on the gains.absolutely clueless.do not talk about what you have no knowledge about. It almost like saying ” why am I paying sales tax when I have already paid payroll tax. The fact is that during George Romney heydays the capital gain tax was 48% . Capital taxes were levied to capture the portion of income that is not from regular employment because the wealthy were channelling most of via the capital route and thus avoiding paying the taxes.

American History as told through Obama:

Grow national debt by 5 trillion, bow to every foreign leader, cower to the Russians and Iranians, Hang Israel out to dry, pee off the Christians, bend over backwards for the islamists (terrorists), ignore our constitution, ram obamacare down our throats (even though most don’t want it), take God out of anything public and the military, surround himself with communists, etc, etc etc.

I’m sure ya’ll can come up with more…feel free to add to the list.
