The political debate continues to be dominated by questions involving GOP nominee Mitt Romney and his financial history, more particularly his refusal to release any tax information other than his 2010 return and an estimate of his 2011 taxes.
The decision to withhold the information has begun to perplex even conservative pundits such as William Kristol (”It’s crazy”) to George Will (”He must have calculated that there are higher costs in releasing them).” In many cases, unflattering comparisons are being drawn between Romney and his father, George, who as a candidate for the GOP nomination in 1968 began the modern practice of tax disclosure by releasing 12 years of his returns.
While that debate rages, I thought it might be interesting to study what we know of the two Romneys not for what it might tell us about their character, openness, etc., but about the time and place in which each man lived.
Take a look at the thumbnail financial descriptions posted on the right. The younger Romney, as a passive, non-working investor now drawing upon his success at Bain Capital, collected income in 2010 amounting to 439 times the median household income of his fellow Americans.
His father, during a 12-year period in which he mainly worked as chairman and president of American Motors, earned an average annual income that was 44 times that of the median household income of his fellow Americans. Adjusted for inflation, his average income of $247,743 in 1965 dollars would be $1.7 million today.
In the ’50s and ’60s, a period considered the economic heyday of a free and capitalist post-war America, George Romney paid 37 percent of his income in federal taxes.
By 2010, Romney’s son paid a total of 13.9 percent of his income in federal taxes, this in an America that is supposedly well on its way to becoming a socialist state, with a confiscatory federal government intent on stealing the wealth of its highest earners.
Reality, in other words, directly contradicts mythology, but with little apparent effect. The fact that the “socialist” meme not only survives but thrives despite its obvious absurdity is, I would argue, testimony to the perception-altering power of propaganda. Or as the elder Romney might put it, a case of brainwashing.

Nice to see Gooper Senators doing what they do best–standing in the way of a functional democracy.

The proposal defeated on Monday was a scaled-back version of a measure that was blocked by Republicans in 2010.
The centerpiece of the legislation would force tax-exempt “501(c)” groups, which include labor unions and chambers of commerce, to publicly report any donor giving $10,000 or more to the Federal Election Commission.
I honestly wonder sometimes how these ass wipes can look themselves in the mirror.

McCain: Don’t expect GOP cooperation on legislation for the rest of this year
By Michael O’Brien – 03/22/10
Democrats shouldn’t expect much cooperation from Republicans the rest of this year, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) warned Monday.
McCain and another Republican senator decried the effect health reform legislation has had on the Senate, a day after the House passed the upper chamber’s bill.
GOP senators emerged Monday to caution that the health debate had taken a toll on the institution, warning of little work between parties the rest of this year.
“There will be no cooperation for the rest of the year,” McCain said during an interview Monday on an Arizona radio affiliate. “They have poisoned the well in what they’ve done and how they’ve done it.”

Repealing obamacare via reconciliation is by the rules
And so would be a drastic cutting of Social Security benefits. And so would be a conversion of Medicare to a voucher system. There aren’t many things that aren’t “spending bills.”
But the Democrats respected the filibuster in passing Obamacare, working to achieve a 60-vote majority. That’s more than a Republican majority would ever do.
And I’ll remind you of what Bill Frist did as Senate majority leader. He threatened to discard all the rules if the Republicans didn’t get their way with Bush’s SC nominees—the so-called nuclear option. And Frist resembles a strait-laced Puritan in comparison to the smarmy Mitch McConnell.

I agree McCain is honorable and a decent person

In the end, I hate to say it, but Obama was still the better choice
McCain is honest, against wasteful spending
But there isn’t a military fight he wants to avoid
And he doesn’t always put the most thought and due diligence into his decisions (see palin)

Romney gave McCain twenty years of taxes;he took a look at them and immediately selected Pailin.
The Repubs are in the same situation as 1972 when they put a crook back in the White House only to have him resign or face impeachment a year later. Everyone knows Romney is hiding something and it could be grounds for impeachment as soon as he is sworn in to office. Its not too late for an open comvention. As I stated earlier today, even though I believe Romney has not done anything illegal with his money, I’m not one who would take advantage of the good and then move money offshore in accounts as he as done.
With that said, I do think he is a good family man and surely an industrious hard working individual.
I do not adhere to the majority of his policies and will not be voting for him, but I there is some credit to be given and I have no problem acknowledging it.

Get rid of all the preferences in the tax codes and Mitt Romney’s effective tax rate would go up. Also have to remember that if Mr. Romney is tithing 10% of his income to charity (LDS), that is a lower taxable income amount to actually tax (he would be itemizing). No note is made in article of whether the “income” you quote is AGI (what many quote as income, but that is not what you pay tax on). But you get a tax code riddled with these things when your nearest Rep and Senator are for sale and bake such things into the code after lobbying. Don’t blame Romney, blame the system.
Teresa Heinz Kerry made several multiples of Mitt’s income and paid less in tax, her money is mainly in Municipal bonds. And no one every hears peep 1 about Ted Kennedy ever paying taxes (also tied up in muni bonds)…interest free.

Well, all this talk about McCain brings back bad memories. First there was the “lipstick on a pig” speech and everybody got real excited and next the polls showed McCain in the lead against Obama and a few weeks later there was a coffin arriving at McCain’s house where him and Sarah and a few others were having a barbecue and saying they lost. And after that they spent a few weeks trying to figure out which clothes to give back to the department store.
And the next day was the real bad news. No. 1 Foxy Lady got on here and told all us conservatives to . . . well, you know.

That would be nice for us to do, but that kind of hurt & loss must truly be beyond much of anything we can do. Hard as it is to lose parents, even spouses, it is no comparison to losing a child. Here’s the deal on the whole battle over when Mitt Romney retired from Bain and over his refusal to release any tax returns other than 2010 and, eventually, 2011: Of course he’s hiding sh-t. The question is whether that sh-t is illegal or just, in a general sense, immoral, even sinful, if you believe in that sort of thing, with unchecked avariciousness at the core of nearly every decision Romney made at Bain.
What we’re seeing in the ludicrous scramble to justify Romney’s retirement date and his lack of disclosure of his tax returns is that Romney doesn’t want to let the rest of the nation know exactly how sweet the deals are for the wealthy. He doesn’t want the curtain opened.

not that I’m a mind reader so maybe MM has another answer, but based on what I’ve seen of most who cry “release the college transcripts”, I believe it’s got a lot to do with thinking among too many conservatives that black people have it easy because of quotas and set-asides, and boy howdy, wouldn’t it be cool to find out that Obama only got into that fancy Ivy League school on account of quotas and set-asides?

So some of you want to defend Mitt? Really? Unbelievable!
They have no choice. Mitt was selected from their star lineup of the best they had to offer after a thorough vetting in front of the party constituency.

Mind you, they’d still have a lot of ’splaining to do as to why Obama was somehow able to successfully manage the Review, and then a nonprofit operation, and then get elected state Senator, and US Senator, but they’ve pretty much all agreed that it’s the monolithic Librul Media what did all that for him.
All he had to do was read off a teleprompter.
Right, guys?

She said the GOP forgot to mail out her invitation to speak at the convention.
yeah, I read about that…
http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/07/15/sarah-palin-still-waiting-for-romney-invite-to-tampa.html
The Mitt Romney campaign hasn’t invited Sarah Palin to speak at — or even attend — next month’s Republican National Convention, in Tampa, Newsweek’s Peter Boyer reported.
[...]
Palin surely knows that the official schedule isn’t set, but that didn’t prevent her from pouncing at Boyer’s inquiry, saying she suspects she’s “not the only one accepting consequences for calling out both sides of the aisle” and that “in accepting those consequences… you don’t invite yourself to the Big Dance.”
Palin has never shied away away from an invitation to knock the Republican establishment, and she has a knack for turning those knocks into rallying cries. Boyer gifted her with just such an opportunity, which turned into a dare to the Romney camapign: Want to fire up the right wing? Watch this.
I dunno, it all sounds like pro wrestling; I think Palin and Romney and all these rich, powerful wads-o’-f### know exactly what they’re doing to try to keep us poor, dumbass voters thinking the stories are more interesting than they really are. But I’m cynical that way.

those who haven’t made up their minds aren’t even paying attention
well yeah, actually, this is the time of year when they DO start to pay attention. The primaries are over, the news conglomerates have basically one or two types of political stories that they run “above the fold” (so to speak) and the swing voters get a whiff of this or that bit of negative press that they carry with them until the next time they absorb a story, a week or three down the road.
Of course it’s not enough to allow Obama to coast to victory, but it keeps him ahead for now, in this matchup, and Romney knows that by the end of the summer he’s going to need to have some good news cycles to turn it around.
(and yes, I realize that having a rich crime-boss benefactor taking out a hundred million or so worth of ads will help Romney somewhat, but swing-vote people… well, they’re dumb, generally, but they aren’t quite THAT dumb that they they’ll vote solely on what the attack ads tell ‘em.)
Not ‘Party of the Rich,’ But ‘of Those Who Want to Be Rich’
So much more politically correct than simply calling them “Greedy, selfish a##holes,” which is how most people would describe these, um, “aspiring rich.”

Romney’s condensed statement – “GOP is the party of the greedy rich.”
Where else do you find billionaires whining about paying 14% in federal income taxes and constantly looking for ways to reduce it even farther through off-shore accounts, etc. The greedy can never be rich enough.

When did Mittens release his college transcripts? Oh, he didn’t?
While we’re at it, how about Mittens releasing his draft deferment papers so we can see his rational behind dodging the draft to live in a French chateau for a couple years until it was safe to come home..

Funny how we are pointed down the wrong path sometimes. Shouldn’t the real argument be, “How was it moral for the govt to take 37 cents of every dollar the elder Romney made?” And, regardless of the %, the younger Romney contributed $3 million dollars to the govt. That is more than enough for one person to pay. Oh yeah, and then there’s the fact that the top 20% paid 67.9% of income taxes. Jay, you are focusing on the wrong issues.

You are born, grow up, educated and look at life in America. Key word America. A place where ANYONE can make it big ( Look at this guy running our country…..did I say running, I meant ruining). If you are moaning and bitching about the rich, it’s because you aren’t. I’ll take the Romney path. Obama’s way of thinking is if there is not enough ice cream to go around, then nobody gets ice cream.
Or, the ice cream YOU WORKED for, went to the store and bought, needs to be shared with all who don’t have ice cream. Obama is not worried about immigration…..because he’s making this country a place where some will now look around before coming here. He is a total loser. Why F’up the best country in the world because a few losers are not sharing in the dream. Geez.
