American history, as told through the two Romneys

mitt2010

georgerom

The political debate continues to be dominated by questions involving GOP nominee Mitt Romney and his financial history, more particularly his refusal to release any tax information other than his 2010 return and an estimate of his 2011 taxes.

The decision to withhold the information has begun to perplex even conservative pundits such as William Kristol (”It’s crazy”) to George Will (”He must have calculated that there are higher costs in releasing them).” In many cases, unflattering comparisons are being drawn between Romney and his father, George, who as a candidate for the GOP nomination in 1968 began the modern practice of tax disclosure by releasing 12 years of his returns.

While that debate rages, I thought it might be interesting to study what we know of the two Romneys not for what it might tell us about their character, openness, etc., but about the time and place in which each man lived.

Take a look at the thumbnail financial descriptions posted on the right. The younger Romney, as a passive, non-working investor now drawing upon his success at Bain Capital, collected income in 2010 amounting to 439 times the median household income of his fellow Americans.

His father, during a 12-year period in which he mainly worked as chairman and president of American Motors, earned an average annual income that was 44 times that of the median household income of his fellow Americans. Adjusted for inflation, his average income of $247,743 in 1965 dollars would be $1.7 million today.

In the ’50s and ’60s, a period considered the economic heyday of a free and capitalist post-war America, George Romney paid 37 percent of his income in federal taxes.

By 2010, Romney’s son paid a total of 13.9 percent of his income in federal taxes, this in an America that is supposedly well on its way to becoming a socialist state, with a confiscatory federal government intent on stealing the wealth of its highest earners.

Reality, in other words, directly contradicts mythology, but with little apparent effect. The fact that the “socialist” meme not only survives but thrives despite its obvious absurdity is, I would argue, testimony to the perception-altering power of propaganda. Or as the elder Romney might put it, a case of brainwashing.

John McCain is a respectful and respectable man. He was/is a class act. And that is why, as much as any other reason, he was/is labeled a RINO and damn near swift boated by his own political party..

Mitt makes no such mistake. He is absolutely dripping with classlessness. He even looks a bit like Nixon. And his demeanor is dead on. A mean little pr!ck.

The difference being that Nixon had VAST intellectual curiosity. On the trip to China, he devoured books about them and asked for more. Mitt seems to have sold what he ever had to appease the “sluggish” RNC…

I haven’t listened to Rush Limbaugh since college. I only listened to him 4 or 5 times before I started singing to myself with no radio. This was the 90’s and I’m still not sure what my father was trying to teach me by my driving a 2-tone chevette (luggage rack-4door and automatic) with only an AM radio.

Still, I wonder what Rush Limbaugh has said about Obama since he was first elected. My guess is that he’s been right-on for 3 years. Who listens to him?

Is this the “class act” everybody’s praising? The guy who voted for the “looming military cuts” and now wants to blame Obama for them?

Some of you really have a distorted notion of what a “class act” is. McCain is every bit the nasty, embittered old man that he was even before he secured the nomination. In fact, his pick of Palin, contrary to the notion that he was inspired, was a deliberate attempt to snub his opponents in the nomination race. Kinda like King 0bama invoking executive privilege to keep Fast and Furious covered up, eh? Or sealing his college records, for that matter. Or a half-dozen other things we know about, and probably dozens we don’t know about. Makes one wonder.

There must be higher costs to be paid if the truth gets out, you think?

But just being wealthy is a felony according to liberals (”439 times median household income”, and so forth). Why don’t you compare notes on your criminal activities with your favorite convicted felon (George Soros)?

Jm . Go find his voting record, and prove yourself wrong. McCain cut benefits for veterans, and services.

The days of that detestable, embarrassing (hat tip Natalie Mines) administration are behind us.

And now the goal is simple.

To never allow any Romney semblance of it to arise again.

They BOTH suck

Repealing obamacare via reconciliation is by the rules

It’s a spending bill

But democrats don’t need to worry about the whole legal morass that we live with being repealed

Though it might be nice to start with a blank slate

” it will not be the law you see today. It will be sliced and diced before it is all said and done.”

I’m hoping you’re right, and I’m hoping they (lawmakers) try as hard as possible to get it right. I visited the DMV last week & waited hours. The big change that has caused the mess? Bring your social security card. The healthcare law has the makings of a serious clusterf*ck.

Jam : Debbie, Karl Rove was disgraceful and pathetic human being. In every way. And to that extent he was the very face of the cowardly and immoral previous administration.

He’s working in MItt’s camp now — it’s the same song with a different singer. Mitt has Rove, Cheney, and even Rumsfeld as his “advisors”. It’s sickening how low these people will go.

And again, why McCain was, in that regard, the polar opposite of these gutless neocons…

Word.

Recon 0311 2533 :

Did you see this the other day??

“As one female Marine told msnbc.com, “No one questions why there aren’t any females in the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, etc. Olympic athletes are the elite of the elite. No one questions why the women compete against women and men against men. Those are great sports and achievements. But lives and missions aren’t on the line. In our world, if you move slower one day, you don’t get bumped off the medal stand, you could die or get someone else killed.”

As a life long anti-Republican, I could slice and dice McCain’s record and policies from now until next Sunday.

Nonetheless, in my estimation, he is essentially an honorable man.

And in my worthless opinion, Mitt Romney is not, and he is unfit to lead…
