An apropos glide into a potentially stormy weekend

Got home from an evening meeting last night to find my girl watching the 1943 classic black musical “Stormy Weather,” starring Lena Horne and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. Once I started watching, I was hooked.

The movie was fascinating on many levels, not least as an historic artifact of racial attitudes at the time, documenting how black performers were both confined by stereotypes and caricatures while also finding ways to defy them.

But what really blew me away was the quantity and quality of musical and dance talent showcased in the movie, from Cab Calloway (doing an early moonwalk) to the Nicholas Brothers dance duo to a hilarious homage to the black vaudeville comedy duo Miller & Lyles, which ranks up there with anything done by Abbott & Costello.

I mean, when you’ve got all-time jazz greats such as Illinois Jacquet and Coleman Hawkins as uncredited background players, you’re talking talent.

Anyway, enough socio-historic babble. It’s Friday, and almost quitting time. Here’s a clip featuring one of my favorites, Fats Waller, with the great blues singer Ada Brown. (Tragically, Fats died shortly after the movie was released at the age of 39.)

And yet, even after all the progress we’ve made in civil rights, a goodly number of black artists and authors just can’t tear themselves away from using their talents to keep reliving these bad days and only thinly disguising their hatred for all whites, then and now.

Well, I ain’t in the mood for blues, but let me take you back to 1959. I was just out of my 3rd year in the 5th grade when this one hit the radio. I know some of you weren’t even born in 1959, but this one was important to those of us that were sick of the usual stuff, including the Everly Brothers and Elvis, and needed something upbeat. See, there was music even before your Dad got that look in his eye when he saw your Mom. Have a good weekend everybody.

Radio DJ in college, eh?

That brings back some great memories of listening to album rock late at night.

When I got to England i immediately discovered Radio Caroline.

Now they’ve gone digital. (of course)

But back in the day they were a pirate station broadcasting from offshore in the North Sea. Talk about some sweeeeet music!

After being exposed yesterday of advertising for illegals to get on foodstamps using “soap opera novellas” on hispanic TV channels, the USDA today said they had pulled those adds. How Obama’s cockroaches scurry when they are exposed out in the light.

Anyway, in that light, I offer this. Only substitute “SNAPS card” for MTV and “Checks” for chicks! And there you have the democratic base!

Imagine yourself a black man in the 1930s in the deep South. Imagine putting up with having to use a different restroom than the whites,a separate drinking fountain, sitting on the back of the bus, being denied entry into a restaurant, forbidden to love a white woman, being called names and watching KKK members burn down and hang close friends. Now fast forward to now, when the person in the White House is a black man. Now you can understand why that tear was flowing down the face of Jessie Jackson on election night. We should all feel proud that we chose the best man for the job — black, white, yellow, red or purple. Those who feel like they are better than those with a deeper complexion, get a life and stop judging. You are not any better then the black folk.

my daughter’s birthday is Sunday — she would have been 40.

I had to get a lot of stuff together for the grandkids, as they are going to the beach for a memorial. my sister is taking them.

I had her cremated and bought some keepsake urns for me and them. But one let it slip out that my oldest granddaughter was planning on giving some of her ashes away.

I found a jeweler who will permanently seal the urns for me.

Unfortunately I won’t make the Sunday deadline, but that’s the way it goes.

I was able to mail some goodies to the two youngest for them to enjoy, tho.

Yes Josef. Jessie was pissed at Barack because of a policy disagreement. However, the “tear” was shed on a much deeper scale because of the civil rights marches — heads hammered with batons and massive arrests — untaken with MLK. You couldn’t help but see in his face a glimmer of a smile that the great Martin Luther King was also grinning in his grave that — at least for this short spell in time — the nation had come to its senses and realized the value and importance of a black man with Obama’s determination and intelligence.
