Telling friend from foe, and foe from annoyance
Two contrasting quotes from yesterday’s news cycle, then three observations:

My conclusions?
1.) It takes disturbingly little to “shock and stun” Mitt Romney. What would he do if something truly serious happened? Keel over in a faint?
2.) We are the United States, with the world’s largest economy — by a lot — and the world’s largest military — by a lot, lot more. Chavez is a cancer-ridden tinpot dictator of a country with an economy the size of Maryland’s and a defense budget that’s 0.45 percent of the Pentagon budget. His entire schtick is to puff himself up by pretending that he poses some threat to the mighty United States, and Romney has given him exactly what he wants.
3.) According to Romney, Russia “is, without question, our number one geopolitical foe,” while “the greatest threat that the world faces is a nuclear Iran.” He says that “unless China changes its ways, on Day One of my presidency I will designate it a currency manipulator and take appropriate counteraction” and he now wants to treat little Venezuela as a serious threat to our national security. He also promises that as president, he “will commit to eliminating North Korea’s nuclear weapons and its nuclear-weapons infrastructure.”

We have serious differences with each of those countries, which pose challenges of varying sorts to American interests. Romney seems intent on handling all of them with the same overwrought approach. In addition, the foreign policy team that he has selected is dominated by those who advised President George W. Bush in his first term, more specifically by members of the Cheney faction that Bush gradually moved aside, if a little too late.
Foreign policy isn’t going to get a lot of attention in this race, but as we’ve learned the hard way, a single unexpected event can suddenly make it the most important item on the national agenda. To my mind, Obama has provided a calm, steady hand in foreign affairs; there is every sign that Romney would provide leadership of a different sort.

Generally speaking? I agree with you in principle. I think it’s rude to a blog host to go off topic on the first or second page (i.e., 50-100 posts in), and if there are people making an earnest effort to keep on topic, you don’t indulge the trolls.

You’re right in that he could move them. What you don’t acknowledge, though, is that he can’t do that unless Congress appropriates the money to do that exact thing. Contrary to popular rhetoric, Obama doesn’t hold the US checkbook. Congress does.

Almost exactly one year after discovering dwarf planet Pluto’s fourth moon – though not before actually naming poor little P4 – NASA announced Wednesday a fifth moon has been discovered orbiting the ex-planet.
Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope found the irregularly shaped moon, which they said measures 6 to 15 miles across. For now, it’s being called P5.
Pluto’s other moons are Charon, Nix, Hydra and Gingrich.

You can manipulate the slide bar above the graph and see how many detainees were held and how many were transferred. By that chart, we’re under 180 detainees currently there. The highest number held was 684 in June 2003. Seems like Bush kinda put the brakes on detaining people as well, long before Obama was even sworn in.

How would a 9/11 go down today? Would passengers just sit there and let this unspeakable thing happen? I think you would have had three planes not one dumped in some field in the northeast, if it had to go that far.
When the battle is on our shores the selfish have to get involved not just the summer help. This is a little of the point Obama makes on all paying their fair share of taxes. It is not just the budget that the right wreaks when they are in office and then make political hay when they are not, it is the involvement of all citizens in this country. We have seen money and citizens bolt our country because they have no dog in this hunt. We have seen half baked military planning because we are in foreign lands and have forgotten even why we are there. What O says is lets put a heart back into America. Do this and the economy with revive itself. This use to be the character of the country, now we have watered down loyalty especially from the rich. They might not let that plane they are on be taken by terrorist because of selfish reasons ,not patriotism, but they will let this country go down for the same selfish justification.

The reality is that when he made the campaign promise, Obama was naive about the political fall-out he would receive if he relocated the prisoners to one of the states and when he took office he found out things aren’t as simple as they look from the outside.
