Telling friend from foe, and foe from annoyance

Two contrasting quotes from yesterday’s news cycle, then three observations:

images-12

“… overall my sense is that what (Hugo) Chavez has done over the last several years has not had a serious national security impact on us. We have to be vigilant. My main concern when it comes to Venezuela is having the Venezuelan people have a voice in their affairs, and that you end up ultimately having fair and free elections, which we don’t always see.”

– President Obama

——————————-

images-11

“This is a stunning and shocking comment by the president. It is disturbing to see him downplaying the threat posed to U.S. interests by a regime that openly wishes us ill. Hugo Chavez has provided safe haven to drug kingpins, encouraged regional terrorist organizations that threaten our allies like Colombia, has strengthened military ties with Iran and helped it evade sanctions, and has allowed a Hezbollah presence within his country’s borders.”

– Mitt Romney

——————————-

My conclusions?

1.) It takes disturbingly little to “shock and stun” Mitt Romney. What would he do if something truly serious happened? Keel over in a faint?

2.) We are the United States, with the world’s largest economy — by a lot — and the world’s largest military — by a lot, lot more. Chavez is a cancer-ridden tinpot dictator of a country with an economy the size of Maryland’s and a defense budget that’s 0.45 percent of the Pentagon budget. His entire schtick is to puff himself up by pretending that he poses some threat to the mighty United States, and Romney has given him exactly what he wants.

3.) According to Romney, Russia “is, without question, our number one geopolitical foe,” while “the greatest threat that the world faces is a nuclear Iran.” He says that “unless China changes its ways, on Day One of my presidency I will designate it a currency manipulator and take appropriate counteraction” and he now wants to treat little Venezuela as a serious threat to our national security. He also promises that as president, he “will commit to eliminating North Korea’s nuclear weapons and its nuclear-weapons infrastructure.”

A chapter heading from Mitt Romney's statement of foreign policy, titled "An American Century".

A chapter heading from Mitt Romney's statement of foreign policy, titled "An American Century".

We have serious differences with each of those countries, which pose challenges of varying sorts to American interests. Romney seems intent on handling all of them with the same overwrought approach. In addition, the foreign policy team that he has selected is dominated by those who advised President George W. Bush in his first term, more specifically by members of the Cheney faction that Bush gradually moved aside, if a little too late.

Foreign policy isn’t going to get a lot of attention in this race, but as we’ve learned the hard way, a single unexpected event can suddenly make it the most important item on the national agenda. To my mind, Obama has provided a calm, steady hand in foreign affairs; there is every sign that Romney would provide leadership of a different sort.

A Simple Man — “Was the wrong? He is in a contest.”

I don’t think I said that he was wrong. You might want to reread my post and see where I never said that. :D

My point is that people are focusing on how supposedly brave Romney was in going to the NAACP, when there was nothing brave about it at all. IMO, Romney went in there *expecting* to take some lumps and some dissing from the crowd; I think he *wanted* to be treated that way so he could use it to his advantage with his base.

He has tenuous support among conservatives anyway, so using the NAACP event in this way is simply a method for him to get more low-hanging fruit (conservative votes) that might not have been motivated to turn out on Election Day. It’s a smart move, but it also smells of desperation, too.

Your conclusions are all wrong. Being that this blog site is a leftist soap box, foreign policy discussion is not in your realm of expertise. You people need a surgeon to cut those rose colored glasses from your face. Appeasement is the name of your game and enemy identification goes only as far as the Republicam Party.

The world’s bad guys depend on the American electorate to vote for Democrat politicians. Why? Simply because they know that Democrats typically are weak minded, corrupt, and inept at foreign policy. They know that liberals have a disconnect with reality and they know that pacifism runs deep in their veins. They know that Democrats take their eye off the defensive ball when in power. They know that Democrats will relentlessly savage their own opposite political party rather than unite against their own common enemy.

Hence, we had FDR disregarding intel about Pearl Harbor, Jimmy Carter creating the Islamic Republic of Iran, Bill Clinton having infidelity in the White House while Islamic terrorists learned to fly jets in our country, and now Obama disregarding our present enemies. This same type of disregard and disconnect is mirrored by Obama’s legion of liberal followers. This systemic malady is carried forth by the Bookmans of this country and their myrmidons.

Bookman failed to inform his little liberal sharks of another threat to our country. No, it’ s not Mitt Romney. It’s that guy who used to be a KGB agent who keeps hrunning Russia long after Communism went away over there. Mr. Putin loves you Democrats and despises Republicans. Wonder why?

Wake up liberals. Put away your textbooks, Disney World observations, and inward fields of tulip-tripping. There are evil minded people out there in the world with evil minded intentions for the United States.

Mitt Romney is fully aware of the dangers and he knows that our enemies fully respect the threat of force projection.

Conservatives – why are you suddenly backing this Romney clown, when he was skewered by the true conservatives during the primary?

“Too bad those critical thinking skills don’t translate to independance and self reliance, but instead lead to government dependance and liberal bed-wetting.”

In addition to “Ben Shockley’s Amazing Stories and Little-Known Facts” Ben Shockley has also given us “The Ben Shockley Dance”!

(I usually overlook misspelt words, but this was just too good to pass up…)

pointing out that blacks vote over 90% Dem isn’t playing the race card. It’s playing the fact card.

Why is there a need to single out Black, with a capital B, voters at all? Americans are Americans regardless to what race they are. If one wasn’t so focused on racial issues, why would you need to play that “fact” card? I don’t recall anybody here, including you, ever making the claim to be an intellectual giant. I hope you realize that burning all that straw could lead to wildfires like Colorado has.

From CBS news:

While Republicans lambast the cost of implementing health care reform, a new report shows that their efforts to repeal the law have come at a major cost to taxpayers — to the tune of nearly $50 million.

Paul, I think you are laboring under the mis-impression that I answer to you. But I’ll humor you, because I’m feeling generous.

If you lefties are so great at critical thinking, why can’t you provide your own health insurance, invest your own money for retirement, decide where to send your own kids to school, etc? Is it because your critical thinking and analysis leads you to the conclusion that you really just aren’t smart enough to handle those things, and you’d rather just turn total control of your lives over to government?

G. Heathen — “Sorry JHM, You are correct.”

Yes, I am.

“I should have stated, “It is my opinion, based on my observations of JHM’s previous purely partisan analysis, that he and the wifey would be critical of Romney for not speaking to the NAACP just as much they would be for him speaking to the NAACP.”

Yes, you should have. Then I would have simply disregarded your uninformed speculation.

Once again, I spent over 20 years voting with the GOP, and a dozen years volunteering for them as well. When you set me up as some sort of dyed-in-the-wool liberal, you’re not only demonstrating that you *haven’t* been paying attention to anything I say; you’re also demonstrating that you’re not very good at analysis and thought yourself.

In other words, you make yourself look like a jackass. Once again, if you want to know what I think, then ask me.

Am I seeing the makings of the Ben Shockley Exception to the Kamchak Corollary? The exception would include making up so much sh*t that it obviously could not have been pulled from a single colon?
