Telling friend from foe, and foe from annoyance

Two contrasting quotes from yesterday’s news cycle, then three observations:

images-12

“… overall my sense is that what (Hugo) Chavez has done over the last several years has not had a serious national security impact on us. We have to be vigilant. My main concern when it comes to Venezuela is having the Venezuelan people have a voice in their affairs, and that you end up ultimately having fair and free elections, which we don’t always see.”

– President Obama

——————————-

images-11

“This is a stunning and shocking comment by the president. It is disturbing to see him downplaying the threat posed to U.S. interests by a regime that openly wishes us ill. Hugo Chavez has provided safe haven to drug kingpins, encouraged regional terrorist organizations that threaten our allies like Colombia, has strengthened military ties with Iran and helped it evade sanctions, and has allowed a Hezbollah presence within his country’s borders.”

– Mitt Romney

——————————-

My conclusions?

1.) It takes disturbingly little to “shock and stun” Mitt Romney. What would he do if something truly serious happened? Keel over in a faint?

2.) We are the United States, with the world’s largest economy — by a lot — and the world’s largest military — by a lot, lot more. Chavez is a cancer-ridden tinpot dictator of a country with an economy the size of Maryland’s and a defense budget that’s 0.45 percent of the Pentagon budget. His entire schtick is to puff himself up by pretending that he poses some threat to the mighty United States, and Romney has given him exactly what he wants.

3.) According to Romney, Russia “is, without question, our number one geopolitical foe,” while “the greatest threat that the world faces is a nuclear Iran.” He says that “unless China changes its ways, on Day One of my presidency I will designate it a currency manipulator and take appropriate counteraction” and he now wants to treat little Venezuela as a serious threat to our national security. He also promises that as president, he “will commit to eliminating North Korea’s nuclear weapons and its nuclear-weapons infrastructure.”

A chapter heading from Mitt Romney's statement of foreign policy, titled "An American Century".

A chapter heading from Mitt Romney's statement of foreign policy, titled "An American Century".

We have serious differences with each of those countries, which pose challenges of varying sorts to American interests. Romney seems intent on handling all of them with the same overwrought approach. In addition, the foreign policy team that he has selected is dominated by those who advised President George W. Bush in his first term, more specifically by members of the Cheney faction that Bush gradually moved aside, if a little too late.

Foreign policy isn’t going to get a lot of attention in this race, but as we’ve learned the hard way, a single unexpected event can suddenly make it the most important item on the national agenda. To my mind, Obama has provided a calm, steady hand in foreign affairs; there is every sign that Romney would provide leadership of a different sort.

Romney consistently says stupid things that have to be walked back by staff and the main stream media on his behalf.

How will they cover him for this:

Remind them of this: If they want more stuff from government, tell them to go vote for the other guy—more free stuff. But don’t forget, nothing is really free.

Gen Powell was reflecting the professional military’s reticence of getting into a conflict, especially one where there is not a clear-cut threat to America.

Big difference between Albright and Kristol: Albright’s op was accomplished without any American combat deaths and stopped the slaughter of untold numbers of innocents.

Kristol’s mindset would lead to an horrific number of American combat deaths and the slaughter of untold numbers of innocents.

In other late breaking, but boring news, Romney was shocked and stunned by the car repair bill I just paid. Obama thinks it is unfair that I had to put it on my credit card, and declares a new tax to help people like me pay the bill.

“Obama was just going to actually talk with Iran

Do you have any source at all that documents that was the strategy and the desired outcome?

Aside from Rush and Hannity as sources, that is.

See, this is another example where the Right asserts what Obama tried and why he tried it, in a situation that does not have the outcome they assert, then they use that to state he failed.

It’s like saying “Toyota’s chairman says they’re going to produce a line of hybrid cars and in two years they will replace gasoline-only cars. Hybrids haven’t replaced gas-powered cars, therefore Toyota failed.”

(You can substitute ‘Obama” “Iran” and “everything will be swell” in that quite easily. And it’s about as true, too).

Normal: Whether or not I agree with the drone strikes, they are accomplishing the goal they set out to accomplish and we know all about them because of transparency. And my overall major point was that Obama’s foreign policy record is clear. It is STRONG, and he is showing LEADERSHIP.

I still disagree with the drone wars. Now we don’t even need to have a human cost to war, and if a Romney or other hawk were to ever get into office you can bet our killing would increase while we enjoy nice fat tax cut checks here at home. “We believe in all these things and they won’t cost anybody anything.”

CIA admits drone strike killed six in Wisconsin wedding party(at least the “wedding crashers”escaped unscathed).
.

After a three months of investigations, the CIA now admits that a NATO Predator drone flew off course on July 10 of this year and mistakenly launched a missile strike on a wedding reception being held in Pamperin Park in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

CIA investigators report that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which was flying missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, misidentified the Miller-Peterson wedding celebrants for Taliban insurgents and launched an attack, killing six and wounding 17.

After failed attempts to establish radio contact with what were then suspected to be militants and having no other indication that the attendees were actually “friendlies,” the drone operator was given a go-ahead to launch the attack on the gathering. On that fateful Saturday evening, the Predator drone soaring a mile over the north Green Bay suberbs launched its radar-guided AGM-114 Hellfire missile and struck the reception area with pinpoint accuracy, just as the DJ was announcing the arrival of the wedding party.

The explosion caused the collapse of the nearby gazebo that held the wedding cake, launched charred tables, chairs and wedding guests out of the blast zone and destroyed the sign-in table, leaving the bride devastated and totally embarrassed.

.

Those immediately killed in the attack included the Best Man, the photographer and four guests on the bride’s side. Among the wounded were the couple’s parents, two groomsmen, several friends no one had seen since college and two wedding crashers who later fled from the hospital before being identified.

“This completely ruined my wedding,” the recently married Melissa Peterson-Miller told investigators. “First, theflowers were all wrong, then Rodney [Stevens, one of the groomsmen who was injured in the attack] threw up on the cheese tray at the rehearsal dinner last night, and now this!”

The incident report reveals that the drone pilot believed the targets on the ground appeared to be militants wielding weapons and firing them into the air in an act of aggression. It turns out, the guests were merely conducting a “raise the roof” dance move as part of the DJ’s appeal for support and “a little energy” while the wedding party arrived to take their seats at the head table.

And for those inquiring, the sanctions against Iran are actually going very well. Obama and more accurately his secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, have put together an international embargo far more extensive and punitive than anything managed under the previous administration, and it is inflicting major economic pain on Iran. Inflation up 21 percent; cost of bread up 40 percent; oil production closing down because they have nowhere to sell it.

We’ll see if it has the desired effect, but to argue that it isn’t worth a try and that it isn’t forcing Iran to recalculate its policies would be foolish.

My wife and I were discussing this last night, and we concluded that Romney’s appearance at the NAACP event was not *aimed* at the NAACP membership, or at black Americans in general.

It was aimed at his base.

Romney can now use that event as evidence that he *tried* to speak calmly and respectfully to the leadership of those mean, hateful black folks, and they booed him. As a consequence, everyone should help Romney heal from his owie by sending him lots of cash and checks, and by voting for him. That’ll make the hurt go away.

Again, folks, that appearance wasn’t for *gaining* black votes. It was about gaining conservative votes and about shoring up his base. Think about it.

Is there a problem in the whole entire universe that libs can’t solve with a tax increase on the rich?

Joe Mama,

Was the wrong? He is in a contest. He is trying to win. He knows that, according to the latest polls, he will get maybe 5 – 6% of black vote. If he goes, he is wasting time talking to a crowd that won’t turn his way. If he doesn’t go, he’s a racist that doesn’t care about the black community. He made the best of the situation and turned it to his advantage as best he could. Obama wouldn’t do that? Please…

I noticed Luckovich did not include any “Intelligent” white guys in the GOP. Then again, how else should he handle the occassional outlier, should one arise.

We were also bigger by Osama bin Laden’s empire by a lot. We still saw POTUS celebrating the removal of that threat.

We were bigger than Egypt by a lot.

We saw POTUS get behind the removal of that leadership.

It’s not Romney moving hardware towards Iran.

It’s Obama.

Why are you not questioning that?

You’ve gotten enough from the President. Let’s go over what documents Obama has presented:

-Short form birth certificate
-Long form birth certificate
-Tax returns for 12+ years

Public records:
-Graudated magna cum laude from Harvard Law
-Record as a State Senator
-Record as a US Senator
-Record as a professor
-Record as PRESIDENT for 3.5 years

What has Romney presented? He won’t even talk about his Massachusetts record!

Obama: Open book
Romney: Secretive

JHM @ 9:35;

When Geore W. Bush attended Coretta Scott King’s funeral, several of the speakers that day were openly hostile and disrespectful to the president, with him sitting right there in the front row. It was the same with Romney’s appearance the other day. The black community is monolithic in their voting habits and ideology, and they make no attempt to listen respectfully to the other side. You can try to spin it any way you want, but Romney ain’t the one who acted badly in this instance.

Hey Mitt, why is one of your top campaign donors under justice department investigation for aiding clients to create illegal off shore tax havens?

BTW, why do you have off shore accounts again? Just for shlt’s and giggles?

Oh yeah, where are those tax returns? Every other presidential candidate releases them, why not you?

godless: The meme from the left is that the tax cuts don’t create jobs, unemployment is at 8%, but the stimulus worked great, unemployment is at 8%.

Tax cuts during the first year of Reagan. Result: Recession.
Tax increases during subsequent years of Reagan, spending on government jobs and stimulus. Result: Growth
Tax increases during Clinton years. Result: Growth and a balanced budget
Tax cuts during Bush years. Result: stagnant jobs, eventual deep recession.

You don’t need to only look at the Obama years to see that tax cuts don’t create jobs.

JHM: My wife and I were discussing this last night, and we concluded that Romney’s appearance at the NAACP event was not *aimed* at the NAACP membership, or at black Americans in general.

And if he didn’t speak to the NAACP you and wifey would be concluding that the reason Romney didn’t speak to the NAACP would be to appease his base, the old white guys that comprise 99.99999999% of the Republican voters.
