To borrow from the great Sherlock Holmes, it is the curious case of a watchdog that should have barked, but for some reason hasn’t.

As many of you know, on July 1 the process of renewing your Georgia driver’s license became much more complicated and time-consuming, requiring among other things an official copy of your birth certificate, an official Social Security card and, if you’re a married woman, a copy of your marriage license to justify use of your married name rather than your birth name.
Digging up all that material can be a real chore — personally, I haven’t seen my Social Security card in years if not decades. And once you’ve gathered it all, you then have to run the gauntlet at the overwhelmed Department of Driver Services, where waits of four or five hours have become common. People are getting angry about the situation, and for good reason.
But here’s the thing: The changes aren’t Georgia’s idea, and in fact have been forced upon the state by new federal regulations. So why haven’t we heard state elected officials blaming the feds for “shoving this change down Georgia’s throat”? Why aren’t they deflecting public anger over long lines by redirecting it at Washington, which in truth is causing the problem in the first place?
It would be so easy, even a liberal could do it. You mention the Tenth Amendment, states’ rights and federal overregulation, then close with the fact that dictating how states issue driver’s licenses is not a power enumerated by the Constitution. Voila! Instant poutrage!
As it turns out, however, Gov. Nathan Deal has a very good reason for staying silent on the matter. Back in 2005, when the federal legislation in question was being passed into law, then U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal co-sponsored the measure.
And Republicans in general are muting their usual complaints because the REAL ID bill was a GOP initiative, part of their effort to prove that no measure was too extreme or intrusive if it could be excused as a counter-terror measure. In the House, for example, Republicans voted 219-8 in favor of the requirement, while Democrats voted 42-152 against it.
In other words, as Holmes so wisely surmised, the dog doesn’t bark at its own master.

More evidence that Republicans don’t care about states’ rights. Nor do they care about less government, low taxes (Ryan and Romney’s proposals raise taxes on the poor and middle class), or any of the other things they claim to care about. It’s all smoke and mirrors.

Oh Noes! Tell me it ain’t so! In fact, that is nothing at all like how Speaker Ralston described it. He said it was the state’s fault (excluding himself obviously from being a part of the state) and that they are only having to Deal with it because it is federal law. Okay. I’m not 100% sure if Ralston complained about having to Deal with it or not.

Jay,
Here’s a portion of the law…
Under the new rules, which began Tuesday, drivers have to bring an original
or certified birth certificate, proof of Social Security number (a Social
Security card, W-2 form or federal tax return) and two documents proving
where they live. Previous rules required these forms of identification when
applying for a new driver’s license or ID card, but now the forms are also
required for renewals. Also, the first renewal after the law change must be
done in person, not online.

Getting a drivers license is not a RIGHT
It might not be, but according to the 24th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States:
“Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.
Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
If you’re going to require ID to vote in state elections, that’s all fine and good. When you step into the federal realm, you might wanna make those ID’s as easy and accessible as possible to obtain. There are a few states that face extra scrutiny when it comes to electoral processes. If they really want that scrutiny to go away, you don’t do that by kicking the proverbial hornet’s nest.

When you leave the place they could tell you, “Here’s your new drivers liscence and you better get that polyp halfway up your gut looked at.”
Anyhow, whatever happened to the Right of Privacy? You can’t get a drivers liscence without telling the guvmint everything about you and you can get arrested if you don’t tell the guvmint about every penny you make. And every 10 years the guvmint sends people around to ask all kinds of personal questions, and you got to answer them. That’s why I always look around the toilet bowl before I ever set down. I don’t want to be watching TV one night and see a news clip about my butt showing up because I never noticed the little camera the guvmint put down inside of the bowl. Course, I think the idea of a guvmint bedroom monitor is still a pretty good one.
Have a good p.m. everybody.

There are a few states that face extra scrutiny when it comes to electoral processes.
Hmmmm.
Wonder what that means?
Oh, yeah, that’s right.
Here in Dixie we have to have the feds watching us like hawks so the White Power boys don’t rig the elections anymore!
The Voting Rights Act established extensive federal oversight of elections administration, providing that states with a history of discriminatory voting practices (so-called “covered jurisdictions”) could not implement any change affecting voting without first obtaining the approval of the Department of Justice, a process known as preclearance. These enforcement provisions applied to states and political subdivisions (mostly in the South) that had used a “device” to limit voting and in which less than 50 percent of the population was registered to vote in 1964. The Act has been renewed and amended by Congress four times, the most recent being a 25-year extension signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2006.

You can not buy a beer in this state without a photo id. You can not receive welfare benefits without proving identity. Why should you be allowed to vote without proving who you are and if you are legal.
If it acts as a tax, regardless to what it’s called, it is still a tax. Did you not learn that a few weeks ago? Sorta like the ruling from Chief Justice Roberts… When the Constitution is amended to protect those things you listed in the same manner that the right to vote is protected by the 24th, you’ll have a valid point. Identity and Lawful Presence Requirements
Non-US citizens are required to present immigration documents in person at a Customer Service Center to prove identity and lawful presence in the United States. Original documentation must be submitted each time a service is requested pertaining to a driver’s license or identification card. In some cases, one immigration document is sufficient to prove lawful presence. In others, additional immigration documents are required to prove lawful presence. The chart below provides details about these requirements.
If any people with no legal status obtained a legitimate Georgia Driver’s License, that would be due to them being able to pass fraudulent immigration documents off as legitimate, using an assumed identity through fraud, or they may actually be in possession of an “ID Only” document. There’s also the possiblity of an altered or counterfeit driver’s license as well. I’ve come across very good counterfeits that most people wouldn’t be able to tell were not state issued.

As I understand it, the law requires all registrations to be submitted for scrutiny — hence the registration for Mickey Mouse, Elmer Fudd etc. It might make “sense” to you to streamline the process by allowing those doing the registering to weed these out, but I think that would put too much power in potentially unscrupulous individuals rather than spreading out the process to allow checks and balances.

When I was a kid and “The Sound of Music” came out, the lines at the movies were long, long. So we hit on the idea of going and selling coffee to those waiting in line. Made a nice little profit. Maybe this will create some opportunities for “job creation.” Would the state permit it and would the little one have to have the same documents, a green card, a business license, health permit…oh, yeah, and a food stamp card…

Apparently, tons of Americans have legitimate concerns about Flip Robme.
Prepare your enemas now, cons. He is the next John McCain…
“I am not concerned about the very poor they have their own safety nets.”
That’s more than a gaffe…He was telling the truth. The other part of the truth is
if he, god forbid, was ever elected, the very poor, the poor, the middle class, ALL
of us will have no safety net.
This man is a liar, we know his views on women. Not good.
He out sources jobs to Singapore, China and India. He also has off shore banking via his
tax havens in Cayman Islands, Bermuda and many more places. The big question…If his
money is legal, then he is UN-AMERICAN. No president, has ever had these accounts.
The bigger question that begs for an answer is why did he transfer the Bermuda account to his wife on the eve of his bring sworn in for Gov of my state?

Scout (From Page 1): I would do that in a heartbeat if I knew only citizens and folks who had a little rudimentary knowledge of how our governments works were voting !!
OMG — seems Scout has been listening to that lunatic Bortz again, (as was I). Bortz was on this morning trying to advocate for only “smart” people being able to vote. He kept grouching about how all the “dumb” people and “lazy people who want gubmint handouts” got into this mess by voting Obama into office.
Then he went one step further by saying that the STATES should decide who should be able to vote and who shouldn’t.
So anyway, that’s how I found out what next week’s repuglican talking points are going to be. First I hear it on Bortz, (LimpBalls probably said it first — but I’d rather eat glass than listen to him); then in a few days you’re going to start hearing it everywhere.

For that matter, if we have to produce these documents just to get a license then shouldn’t we have to produce them (or a drivers license) to vote? The validation of a persons right to vote in this country is far more important than a persons wish to drive a car, don’t you think? Of course large numbers of Obama’s base don’t even know who their parents are much less be able to get a birth certificate. And we all know that they probably won’t have a social security card because they are either illegal or have never worked. Or are they issuing them at birth nowadays?

Actually, just another way to take away a few more liberties. Why did we rolled over and play dead every time Bush/Cheney said doing this or that or the other will make you safer. No it won’t.
We don’t live in a safe world. We’ve been very fortunate in the US that we’ve not had attack after attack that many other countries live with daily. Giving up our liberty is not gonna keep those attacks from happening if someone wants to come in and attack. Or, attack from inside. WHAT?
Every politician of note since and including Ronald Reagan has used a teleprompter?
That’s it!
I’m moving to Singapore!
Seriously, the cons are so pathetically desperate that only in their demented parallel reality was it ever an issue..
There’s one reason above all others that President Obama uses a teleprompter in delivering most of his speeches: he’s good at it.
Ronald Reagan was the same way. He was more at ease in reading his speech off the dual screens of a teleprompter than looking up and down at a speech text on his lectern
Not so, George W. Bush. He often got that nervous, deer-in-the-headlights look when giving an address from a teleprompter. He would seem stiff and ill-at-ease. He did not convey a sense of understanding.
“He preferred using large index cards,” said his one-time White House Press Secretary Ari Fleisher, “plus I think he was just more comfortable with the cards.”
It’s definitely a finely honed skill to deliver a speech from a teleprompter (seen in the top right corner of the above picture from Mr. Obama’s speech today in Columbus, Ohio). It takes as much if not more focus or concentration than reading a paper copy.
LOL at George…

Farmers have been getting rich and are getting subsidies to produce corn for ethanol instead of food. What do you think is going to happen to food prices and gasoline prices if the US corn production falls because of drought this year? And the government is now talking about increasing the ethanol content of gasoline to 15% instead of 10%. This is just another case of government intervention that is going to cost everyone of us dearly and on the world stage it will decrease the amount of food available for consumption.
And I see the AJC just put out an article about energy prices going up. Obama said that his energy policy would increase energy prices for the citizens of this country. By using his EPA as a bludgeon he is now forcing coal burning plants to shut down which will do nothing but increase the costs of cooling and heating our homes. At least in that one instance, Obama was truthful about the impact of his policies for Americans. His environmental policies are increasing the price of energy for the us and the cruel reality of his skewed and unreal liberal ideology are about to come home to every last one of us. Get ready to pay bigtime people.

Jay, you know exactly what I mean. I hold GOP led TX up as a job creator; you imply that it is due to their natural resources; I note that (liberal) CA has similar resources, yet stinks at job creation.
What I mean, of course, is that TX job creation may/may not be due to its natural resources, but even if it is, CA certainly has not taken the same advantages.

It was a pretty long poll (took about 25 minutes). The first part was the usual questions about what statistical categories you fit in and who will you vote for and how likely are you to vote. It then switched to about 20 or 30 questions about Medicare and Social Security and how you about the programs, their future, who would do a better job protecting them and should they be changed.

Sink,
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) is pushing a vote on an amendment Tuesday that would end ethanol subsidies and eliminate tariffs on foreign supplies of the biofuel. That would allow companies to use sugar-based Brazilian ethanol, which is cheaper than the domestic corn-based variety, though presents environmental challenges.
Ethanol is a key national issue for the GOP because of the importance of Iowa’s early caucus to the presidential primary. Former Gov. Jon Huntsman (R-Utah) is skipping the state, he has said, because his opposition to the subsidies is toxic in the state. The issue has split the Republican Party, with free market advocates and deficit hawks pushing for elimination of the subsidies and corn-state politicians fighting back.
The conservative power broker Grover Norquist has battled Coburn, arguing that ending the handouts is equivalent to increasing taxes, meaning that candidates who signed a no-new-taxes pledge would be breaking their word. He has charged that Coburn “lied his way into office.”

http://cbp.gov/xp/cgov/border_security/border_patrol/usbp_statistics/
Statistics for Border Patrol apprehensions beginning as far back as 1925.
——————
Conditions on the border have changed dramatically since the last national strategy, putting pressure on the agency to adapt to a new landscape. An unprecedented hiring boom more than doubled the number of agents to 21,000 since 2004, accompanied by heavy spending on fencing, cameras, sensors and other gizmos.
At the same time, migration from Mexico has slowed significantly. Last year, the Border Patrol made 327,577 apprehensions on the Mexican border, down 80 percent from more than 1.6 million in 2000. It was the slowest year since 1971.
—————-
Today, Immigration and Customs Enforcement director John Morton announced that 396,906 people were deported during the 2011 fiscal year, the largest number in ICE’s history.
“These year-end totals indicate that we are making progress, with more convicted criminals, recent border crossers, egregious immigration law violators and immigration fugitives being removed from the country than ever before,” said Morton.
While the numbers are historic, they’re not dramatically larger than 2010 deportations, which were reported at “more than 392,000.”
As Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano alluded a few weeks ago, 55 percent of the deported immigrants — about 216,700 people — had criminal convictions (felonies or misdemeanors). Overall, the number of criminals deported has increased 89 percent since 2008.
—————-
And to think, some have the opinion that feds are not enforcing immigration laws, why don’t you try selling that to my colleague’s family.
A U.S. Border Patrol agent was killed in an ATV accident while on patrol near Fort Hancock early Friday evening, officials said Saturday.
Agent Leopoldo Cavazos Jr., 29, died in an ambulance on the way to an El Paso hospital, Border Patrol spokesman Doug Mosier said.
It sounds like a good talking point to say crap like that, but I can guarantee that people who put their lives on the line would beg to differ with the thought that we are not enforcing immigration law. I tell you what, I’ll agree to enforce more laws when you agree to pay more taxes to pay for the enforcement.

Well damn, the next thing you’ll tell me is that water is dry. I guess you completely missed the part about RECORD deportations. I guess you completely ignore the fact that deportations have increased under Obama year after year. What about the fact that despite those increases, there are serious vacancies on the federal bench. I’m guessing you don’t realize that when the border patrol apprehends, or arrests, a border crosser, that person is not allowed to enter the US except for certain circumstances and they are deported.

Hmmmmmmmm… No signs of immigration law being enforced around here.
In recent years, immigration attorneys say, concern about foreign gangs entering the U.S. has prompted Washington to delay or deny green cards, or legal permanent residency, to some applicants with tattoos.
The tattoo checks have ensnared scores of immigrants—mostly from Latin America—even though they have no criminal conviction. The denials are based on a section of immigration law that justifies “inadmissibility” on national-security grounds, including possible affiliation with criminal organizations.
In the fiscal year ended September 2006, the State Department refused immigrant visas to only two people it had “reason to believe” sought to “solely, principally or incidentally” engage in organized crime. In fiscal 2010, the latest year available, the number had jumped to 82 people.

First thing you should know is that Obama’s policy only helps those already here. If they leave and try to come back, they don’t get the benefit of Obama’s help. The reason we have to do this again and again is because I refuse to let people expouse stuff, regarding immigration, that has no part of reality whatsoever. I don’t know what most other people do here, but I take great pride in my job and the efforts that my colleagues and I put into it every day.
You claim that laws are not being enforced. I proved you wrong. Why not just claim that selective laws are not being enforced? That’s what’s got you peeved. Don’t make blanket statements because I will prove you wrong. I don’t defend Obama’s policies, and those policies have little to no bearing on my job. Your beef is with ICE.
http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local/couple-stuck-mexico-over-immigration-problem/nPXhb/
If you have a problem, then phrase your dislikes here in that direction. I don’t defend politicians, but I will stand up for my fellow officers. It doesn’t matter if it’s you, Jay, or any other poster here. If you don’t like it, then don’t bring up immigration in a manner that disparages those on the street level.

“I’d gather that I probably know more about immigration than most any other person on this blog.”
As far as I’m concerned that could very well be true. My experience was having to hire H1B’s during the 90’s when that mess began. I was in the I.T. professional service business. I was exposed to the immigration process again with my wife’s immigration. We met professionally as she was hired and came here on an H1B visa. From my experience it’s an expensive broken system that’s been in need of fixing for far too long. I believe we need to fix our existing system before we start putting illegal aliens regardless of their circumstances ahead of those who’ve going through the system legally. To do otherwise would be extremely unfair to those who’ve been waiting. It shouldn’t be that difficult a problem to fix but the government continues to fail in doing so.

It’s not your fault or any others, who partake in the controls, it’s Obamas.
Your fine point request seems to be based on your own defensiveness. You know the entire immigration argument is about control. It in know way is made to defame the agents, it’s a critic of the policy, not you.

Some states have enhanced driver’s licenses that can be used to cross land borders in lieu of having a passport. The states currently issuing them are all along the Canadian border. If I remember correctly, part of the deal with the Real ID was to incorporate them as a form of border crossing ID for travel within the Western Hemisphere in close proximity to the US without having to carry a passport. As it stands now, if you live in the US and work in Canada, you need a passport or passport card to go back and forth, except for those who’s states issue the enhanced ID’s.
Mama
Show me one time where you degraded the politicians. That’s the point I’m trying to make with you. Words on a screen are nothing more than words on a screen. YOU might be talking about policy, but that’s not the case with everyone else. Contrary to what people think, when you blame “government”, that “government” isn’t limited to the elected people in DC unless you specifically say as such. I am just as much a part of the federal government as any elected person in DC.
I don’t sit in DC and write policy, but if I find a trend in immigration, you best believe I have the ability to write something up to address what I’ve observed that ends up becoming policy. And, yes, I am defensive because I’m tired of the broad brushed swipes, whether you think they are not is irrelevant to me.

I don’t have to go back to anything Kam, I can cite Bros response, illegals are still coming in and you don’t see a need to secure the vote.
I mentioned nothing about the “need to secure the vote.” This is what’s known as a “strawman” argument. You’ve created a position that I did not take and you are tearing it down.
Seems that you and Bro sometimes get confused over immigration.
No, in my business I have worked side by side with IAs for the past 30 years and neither party said one single solitary word about this issue until about 4 years ago when conservatives started jumping up and down foaming at the mouth.
Arresting illegals does not mean the government is enforcing anything.
Again — “strawman” as I never said anything about arresting illegals, but I see that SoCo/Bro is pwning you about deportation.
It would be like arguing that because the police arrest those with marijuana that the courts are throwing the book at them, when in fact we know they are not.
You really suck at analogy.
I am also sorry that for some unknown reason you fail see that there is a correlation to the fact that 93 % of the Hispanics favor Obamas immigration policies and the fact that 90% of Hispanics favor the democratic party.
Another “strawman” argument as I haven’t said anything about voting tendencies. Did you perchance go to your local seed and feed store and buy multiple bales of straw?
Sorry guys you can say what you like it doesn’t change facts.
I have yet to see you display any “facts.”
And if your argument is that it ain’t cool to be in favor of enforcing the law, well you are wrong in that also.
Again — “strawman”
Why don’t you ask me what my argument is before responding to what you want me to say?

Dozens of states, cities and other government entities are exploring whether they lost money because of the alleged manipulation of a crucial benchmark used to set interest rates on hundreds of trillions of dollars worth of loans and investments.
Baltimore City is leading a federal lawsuit against the group of big banks that set Libor, the London interbank offered rate, accusing it of conspiring to suppress the benchmark. The banks named in the case include JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Barclays, CitiBank and Deutsche Bank.
In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Manhattan, Baltimore said the banks kept Libor artificially low during the financial crisis and its immediate aftermath, robbing the city of millions of dollars in returns on investments such as interest-rate swaps.

I know you wish to act like you haven’t got a clue but the Hispanic reference to voters and immigration are well known polling that has been released by most of the major polling organizations.
You seem to totally forget that anyone can walk into a polling place on election day and ask for and get a provisional ballot. anyone !
Prior to the new voting laws there was no promise that any ballot would be confirmed.
I will tell you one more thing, of course it’s antidotal which means you will ignore it, but As a cop I see how easy it is to acquire another’s identity.
There was a certain auto establishment who kept giving loans to dead people. The loans would come to light when the estates were being settled and family members would find out they owed several thousand dollars on cars their mother never bought.
After about 7 months of investigation and GBI assistance we discovered that three people in Americas Georgia were going to local cemeteries and writing down the deceased name and DOB. They then had their plant inside one of the credit agencies provide SSNs. They then sold the identities to the dealership. When illegals or others with no credit or bad credit came in wanting a car the salesman just assigned oneof these ID s to the loan.
The illegal drove away with a new car and a SSN and the salesman got his commission.
Based on that the illegally obtained SSN he illegal was Able to register to vote, collect social security and work. All under the deceased name— dead people voting, you may have heard about it.
Either way it’s a problem regardless if you libs think it is or not.

I am stealing this from USinUK, I think: OY TO THE VEY. People, we are a nation of immigrants! The only NATIVES here are the people who were here then. And we all know what happened to them! I think what we all might want to think about is WHO ARE THE REAL ILLEGALS HERE! Yeah, I get the this land is my land rhetoric, but if you are not a “native Amrican,” this land is NOT your’s! Am I glad that it is now my land? Yes. If my forebears had not come here from Germany back in the day, I hope I would have stood up for the Jews. I am grateful that I didn’t have to make that choice.
My point here is this: we can not, must not, ever judge who is “other.”

“— In many states, retail electricity rates are set by regulators every few years. As a result, lower power costs haven’t yet made their way to customers.
— Utilities often lock in their costs for natural gas and other fuels years in advance. That helps protect customers when fuel prices spike, but it prevents customers from reaping the benefits of a price drop.
— The cost of actually delivering electricity, which accounts for 40 percent of a customer’s bill on average, has been rising fast. That has eaten up any potential savings from the production of electricity.”

I don’t normally follow celebrity news unless it concerns some well known creative genius I actually care about (you know, like Justin Bieber?)
But I’m starting to think there could be a useful national discussion about the bright line we Americans draw between child abuse and “raising your children to be good [fill-in-the-name-of-your-religious-affiliation-here]” in the Holmes-Cruise bustup.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/tom-cruise-katie-holmes-divorce-scientology-344687?page=show
A number of former Scientology members say Holmes must know that as Suri gets older, the church might start exerting more of an influence on her.
“She’s at the age where the kids get indoctrinated,” says Headley. “It’s like, playtime over. You’re a Scientologist now. And they really de-emphasize the family. Katie becomes a lot less important as a mother. It’s all about the organization over the individual.”
Soter compared the religious training of children to the practice in Catholicism of beginning to receive Holy Communion at age 7. “Parents may choose to begin educating their children about religion at any time, much as in any other religion,” his statement said. “There is nothing unusual here.”
Headley, who began working 100-hour weeks at the Sea Org base in Hemet when he was 16, often for no pay, was shunned by his Scientologist mother when he left in 2005.
“You’re either in or out when it comes to Scientology,” says Headley. “That’s why Katie is making custody such an issue in the divorce petition. If you’re out, the way she seems to be, they want to cut you off from everyone, including your kids.”

Last month, Mitt Romney’s campaign got into a dustup with the Washington Post after the newspaper reported that Bain Capital, the private equity firm the GOP presidential candidate founded, invested in several US companies that outsourced jobs to China and India. The campaign indignantly demanded a retraction, claiming that these businesses did not send jobs overseas while Romney was running Bain, and the Post stood by its investigation. Yet there is another aspect to the Romney-as-outsourcer controversy. According to government documents reviewed by Mother Jones, Romney, when he was in charge of Bain, invested heavily in a Chinese manufacturing company that depended on US outsourcing for its profits—and that explicitly stated that such outsourcing was crucial to its success.
That’s our Mitt. As refreshing as yellow snow.

July 12th, 2012
7:54 am
Is it too much to ask to have original (real) documents to prove who you are? If the driver’s license is the de facto ID in this country (it probably should not be as one drive on the roads tells you a large percentage of the people are not even qualified-much less insured, I’m sure-to drive).
Perhaps it will make people actually save these documents, rather than continue our lax ways about ID (and border defense) in this country.
And don’t you only have to do it every 10 years?
Francia Lindon
July 12th, 2012
9:12 am
It took me 4 trips to the Cumming Dept. of Driver Services and a final 5 hour 40 minute wait at which time I was told that my recent Jury Summons from Fulton County did NOT qualify as one of the 2 required proofs of address. Neither did my expired drivers license with a 17-year history at the same address, nor a blank check with my address, nor my voter registration card issued by the state within the last week. Fortunately I had my car registration with me and after making it very very clear I was not going to leave without a license, they accepted the car registration.
This will have consequences beyond just being able to drive. It will impact GA voting rights. There are other states following the same Federal law that aren’t making renewing a license a perfect Kafkaesque nightmare.
