As we slide out of a Tuesday and prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July, that quintessential American holiday, we also say goodbye to a quintessential American in Andy Griffith. The 86-year-old actor and national icon died today at his home in North Carolina, the state of his birth and the inspiration for much of his career.
As Andy Taylor, the wise and kindly sheriff of Mayberry, Griffith and his cast captured something about small-town America that even back in the ’60s had begun to fade, a fact that made audiences treasure it all more. TV at the time was dominated by cornpone comedies such as “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “Petticoat Junction,” “Green Acres” and “Hee Haw,” but Griffith’s show treated its characters and the community they shared with a respect that other shows never even tried to attain.
Anybody who ever watched more than two or three episodes, for example, will smile at the following exchange among Sheriff Andy, his hapless and overeager deputy Barney Fife and the town drunk Otis Campbell:
Barney Fife: Andy, I’ve this one dead to rights! Otis was drunk. I even gave him a test. I drew a line on the sidewalk and told him to walk it. You know what he said?
Andy Taylor: What?
Barney Fife: He asked me what line. I’ve got this one right, Andy. Otis was drunk!
Andy Taylor: That right, Otis? Did you ask Deputy Fife what line?
Otis Campbell: Yeah; but I didn’t have my specs on and drunk or sober, I can’t see much without my specs.
Andy Taylor: Otis, three hours ago when Deputy Fife arrested you were you drunk?
Otis Campbell: I don’t know; I wasn’t wearin’ my glasses.
Happy Fourth of July everyone, and to serenade us into the holiday, here’s Andy himself, singing a tune you might recognize:

As a nation that slips more and more into wanting government dependence and cradle to grave nanny statism, why do we even celebrate “Independence Day” anymore? More households today are on some form of government assistance than ever in America’s history. We’ve had 50 years of an alleged “war on poverty” yet the poverty rate in America has not declined. We’ve already blown nearly a trillion dollars in a so-called stimulus bill that was to have stopped unemployment from going above 8%, create “shovel ready” jobs, and provide the foundation for “green energy” job growth. Fail, fail, and fail and all three parts.
But there are silver linings in the dark clouds looming over America: foreign companies are building manufacturing plants in America. The latest will be Airbus, which will be bringing 1,100 jobs to Mobile with a new airliner production plant. Note that Airbus – like the Japanese, Korean, and German automakers that came to America before it, – didn’t choose California, New Jersey, Ohio, or Michigan to build its plant. Let’s see Obama try and stop that from happening like he did Boeing in South Carolina because it’s a right to work state.
Happy Dependence Day.

That is a hard statement to disagree with, but I do disagree.
I think it super important that we honor those who have given so much. But America I’d about (or should be) more than our brave servicemen.
America is a tapestry. Soldiers. But also business people, mothers, dads, inventors, artists, musicians, and yes, even civil servants. And all of them help (or can help) make America great, or at least what it is.
And so on the fourth, I celebrate all of America. All of it.

“ON JULY 4, REMEMBER: WE ARE NOT FRENCH”
“It has become fashionable to equate the French and American revolutions, but they share absolutely nothing beyond the word “revolution.” The American Revolution was a movement based on ideas, painstakingly argued by serious men in the process of creating what would become the freest, most prosperous nation in world history.
The French Revolution was a revolt of the mob. It was the primogenitor of the horrors of the Bolshevik revolution, Hitler’s Nazi Party, Mao’s cultural revolution, Pol Pot’s slaughter, and America’s periodic mob uprisings from Shays’ rebellion to today’s dirty waifs in the “Occupy Wallstreet” crowd.
The French Revolution is the godless antithesis to the founding of America.”

Interesting take on the Greece-Germany thing:
Germany occupied and plundered countries like Greece before 1945, stealing and destroying both public and private wealth. Yet it was not asked to pay reparations. The Allies even forgave Germany’s World War I reparations. So Germany’s insistence that Greece pay all of its debts is not just hypocritical, it’s a complete misunderstanding of one of the key sources of post-1945 German economic success: massive debt forgiveness and free money—the exact opposite of austerity.

Afterwards he says… “well that was great but what was that about?” She replies, ” well research has shown that if a guy ejaculates before a vasectomy he tends to be more relaxed, the surgery goes better, now lets go back to the waiting room and wait for the doctor.” Upon returning to the waiting room he see 5 men sitting on the floor all looking at a playboy and masturbating in a circle together. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/wp/2012/07/05/mitt-romney-now-says-the-individual-mandate-is-a-tax-who-cares/
Nor is it credible to say that this distinction will have real political consequences. “Tax” is not a popular word. But neither is “penalty.” It’s very difficult to imagine the voter who loved the idea of paying a penalty for going without health insurance — aren’t penalties great? — but is morally appalled at the prospect of paying a tax.
And, remember, the individual mandate is a well-known policy that is already extremely unpopular. In fact, it’s the most unpopular provision of the health care law, and always has been. The people who don’t like it already know they don’t like it. The people who do like it are, at this point, well aware that they like it. The idea that, this late in the game, even one vote will be decided by whether Republicans call this already-disliked policy “a tax” rather than “a penalty” or “government coercion” or “jackbooted thugs making you buy health care” strains credulity.

After looking into the ACA thing a bit more, I think it’s about as much of a tax as a speeding ticket is a tax. In the most basic explanation, revenues to the government come in the form of taxes since that is the only legal way that government can raise revenue. Whether it’s a tarriff, a fee, or a penalty, it is still a tax at it’s most basic function.
Expanding the IRS would probably be a great idea if you’re interested in true deficit reduction. I think the most recent number was somewhere in the neighborhood of a 4 to 1 ratio on collections vs tax dollars budgeted. I’m trying to find the actual number now.

The reason the IRS can’t collect all those taxes is in no small way related to incompetency and a tax code that is too complex to manage effectively. Once again, the problem is special interests who will throw endless cash to avoid a simple flat tax or the like….

No we can’t afford any that you mentioned.
Incorrect.
We can afford anything if we choose our priorities wisely.

BRO,
I doubt Romney is dumb enough (I’ve been wrong on many occasions) to go this far down the road to try to hide cash….maybe house his dog on roof of car but…..
Too bad Obama and Holder are also clearly hiding something as well…

Can you answer your own questions?
Do support the complete GOP platform?
If not please let us know those policies with which you do not agree and let us know why.
It’s kind of a slow day and I am curious.

The reason the IRS can’t collect all those taxes is in no small way related to incompetency and a tax code that is too complex to manage effectively.
If, by incompetency, you mean Congress’ inability to fund the IRS so that it can be adequately staffed to maximize it’s revenue collecting ability, then I’ll somewhat agree with you. On the other hand, if you’re simply calling government workers incompetent, I’ll refrain from saying what I want to say for the sake of civility.
The SCOTUS ruled that the penalty has the functionality of a tax. They didn’t directly say it was a tax. There is a big difference between the two, but obviously a segment of America can not deal with such subtle issues.

Do you suppose Romney is breaking any laws?
Why Stevie, I’m glad you asked! The answer is YES — he’s probably breaking about 14 tax laws, deliberately. Anytime someone, and let’s admit the obvious, HIDES their money in a Cayman account is to NOT pay taxes rightfully owed in America. Period.
Now you can paint that pig up real nice and put it in a pretty dress or maybe even add a little lipstick. But guess what? It’s still a dang pig.

ADAM,
We are already spending a trillion or more per year than we take in…President Trillions also spent a trillion on failed stimulus, and a trillion or so more is committed to this crap legislation. The much talked about deficit of 16 Trillion or so is actually over 100 Trillion when you consider how SS, Medicare et al are so often forgotten….
If we are already spending more than we are taking in, where is the money gonna come from? The idea that we have to borrow more money to keep afloat would quickly sink (and has) any family budget don’t you agree?

“set up some known effective means to provide healthcare to those in need but do not continue to spend money we or your kids have yet to earn….”
Romneycare helped us start that process as the forerunner of Obamacare.

Your GOP colors are showing. You seem to have faith that Romney’s on the up and up, but clearly know that Holder and Obama are hiding something. Yet, there is no definitive proof of either.

DEBBIE,
If that’s the case, why hasn’t he been rung up on these 14 charges? I was unaware of any politicians who cheated the IRS and got far in a race for president….that’s game changing news can you direct me to more detailed information on those specific laws he is ignoring?

I was able to fix my air conditioning problem simply by removing the electrical panel on the compressor and checking the connections to the starter capacitor!
Jam. Good news. You should go ahead a buy one or two of the capacitors. Last one I bought was $5.00 and I replaced it myself. My friend who is the HVAC biz says that since they don’t have PCBs in them anymore they are prone to fail. I don’t know about that, but they are somehow programmed to fail on a Friday night or Saturday morning or holiday when the temp is over 90 degrees.

BRO,
I have no reason to think Romney is on the up and up. My point is that if he is evading taxes, I’d be shocked if that wasn’t vetted at this point.
UH OH,
Yes, in both situations the only thing we know for sure is both are being disingenuous for some reason or another…..if BUSH and his wingnuts of Attorney Generals did the same exact thing, those of you who are defending OBAMA would be attacking Bush with same vigor….tell me I’m wrong…

People with Romney’s money have tax attorney’s on speed dial. They also have accountants, tax advisors and lawyers. So if the tax code was too complex for his cadre of people, then he, being the great businessman that he says he is should FIRED them.
Man! I hate to be the one to break up heart like that but reality sucks huh?
