If Tom Cruise were a tomato, what kind would he be?
If the modern industrialized tomato were a celebrity, it would be Tom Cruise, the modern industrialized actor.
The similarities are striking:
The actor and the fruit both look superficially appealing. They both have thin skins, not to mention an artificially long shelf life. And neither is as flavorful, juicy or interesting as its perfect appearance might suggest. Bland and boring as cardboard would be more apt descriptors.
In contrast, the old-fashioned, home-grown heirloom tomato — the kind that you pick warm from the vine on this Fourth of July, slice thin and sprinkle with salt and pepper — might be deemed the Tom Hanks of the gardening world. Like Hanks, its features may be a little more irregular and misshapen, and it comes in a wider palette of red, green and yellow. But in the end, it offers a far more interesting and rewarding flavor.
The difference between them is significant. For example, try to imagine Tom Cruise playing Forrest Gump. The very thought will make your brain cramp, as if you ate too much ice cream too quickly.
That’s all I’m going to say about that.
How then can you account for the ubiquity of Cruise and his tomato counterpart? In both cases, as in too many others, the answer comes down to a genetic weakness for marketing over quality.
According to a study published in the journal Science last week, the blandness of the modern tomato can be traced to the work of botanists roughly 70 years ago. After discovering a genetic mutation that made tomatoes turn a uniform and attractive red, they began to breed that mutation into almost all commercially available strains of tomatoes. At the time, they either didn’t understand or didn’t care that the same mutation that made tomatoes turn uniformly scarlet also made tomatoes less sweet and juicy.
And why was it so important to breed tomatoes to have a uniform red color? Why was that attribute valued so much more highly than actual taste and flavor?
Because human beings, like other primates, are genetically programmed to prefer red fruit. We respond instinctively to the color red because in nature, red tells us that the fruit in question is ripe and rich in natural sugars and other nutrients.
In other words, the modern industrialized tomato has been genetically altered to lie to us. Its bright red color promises our lizard brain a burst of juicy flavor that the fruit itself can no longer deliver. It has been bred into a fraud.
However, according to Ann Powell, a biochemist and one of the lead authors in the new study, there is hope that the damage done by science to the tomato can be undone, returning the fruit to its true nature.
“This information … provides a strategy to recapture quality characteristics that had been unknowingly bred out of modern cultivated tomatoes,” Powell says, predicting that “some of the qualities that people value in heirloom tomatoes can be made available in other types of tomatoes.”
Now, I recognize that in a world wrestling with a tough economy, global warming and other major issues, the possible reincarnation of the old-fashioned tomato isn’t exactly news to make you jump up and down on Oprah’s couch, should you be inclined to express joy in such a fashion. And on the scale of scientific achievement, it’s not as if they’re resurrecting the wooly mammoth from DNA salvaged from a melting glacier.
On the other hand, it’s often the small pleasures in life that see us through hard times. And if science can undo a mistake, if the sweet promise of a tomato’s deep scarlet can once again be made real, that’s good.
One less thing, you might say.

Thusla, Granted we should manage our diets better and get more exercise. It is interesting that earlier generations didn’t have to worry about that because if took a lot of exercise just to survive and so many people died of infectious disease before their diet could kill them.
Speaking of HFCS, it is also a myth that it is somehow worse for you than sucrose. Both are bad for you when too much is consumed but one is no worse than the other. HFCS is just cheaper to produce than sucrose from cane or sugar beets.

I don’t know that that is universally true. As an example, I used to drink Mountain Dew regularly (sweetened with HFCS) and gradually I found myself drinking more and more each day – sometimes as many as 9 or 10 a DAY.
When I started drinking Mountain Dew Throwback (sweetened with cane suger) I drink 2 a day. Period. 2 a day. Clearly there is something about HFCS that cause MY system to crave it, that isn’t there in Throwback.

While their candidate is out bashing Mitt Romney’s Bain Capital as a job outsourcer and greedy corporate raider, President Obama’s campaign is endorsing the essence of one of Bain’s biggest success stories, low-price office supply store Staples.
Created in a 1986 partnership with Bain during Romney’s leadership at the private equity firm, Staples was so successful Bain received a near seven-fold return on its investment and Romney sat on the Staples board of directors for over a decade.
Team Obama turns out to be a big fan, spending $17,963.04 at Staples this year alone, according to Federal Election Commission reports. The Obama campaign just doesn’t walk into stores to shop, it also participates in the Staples Advantage business-to-business market where a majority of the spending went.

Today the UN is trying with US support to get an international agreement to restrict the sale of guns in violation of the US Constitution, Second Amendment. This is the Obam administration once again going around our constitution. It is clear the Obama administration is anti second amendment and will do anything to stop the legal sale of guns. Fast and furious is an example of the lengths this administration will go to. Imagine a government that cannot keep track of two thousand guns when they had their agents eyeballing the transactions keeping track of millions of guns in international trade. What a joke. The administrations interest in this law is to further restrict the freedom of the american people.

If you have an individual or family policy today you can keep it forever and ever if you want to. You cannot be singled out and cancelled nor singled out for rate raises. Surely you knew that right? Which makes your point moot. And as far as group plans go you can take your group plan with you for 18 months for an individual and 36 months for a family if you leave your employer. And under current law in many states when that 18 or 36 months is then exhausted you can then apply for health insurance through state pools that already exist. But of course you didn’t know that either did you?
Also, you alluded yesterday to the fact that under Obamacare that preventive care will be included in health plans. Lemme splain something to you silly- Preventive care is already covered in current individual and group plans. If you are going to speak intelligibly about something youngster you should at least take the time to learn what the hell you are talking about rather than taking your spoonfed talking points and acting as if you are dispensing some sorta new found knowledge.

Marking the start of July’s month-long United Nations conference to negotiate a small arms treaty, National Rifle Association top lobbyist Chris Cox authored an op-ed for The Daily Caller making the hysterical — and baseless — claim that the treaty could “seriously restrict your freedom to own, purchase and carry a firearm.” In fact the proposed treaty seeks to regulate the international trade of firearms – curtailing the illicit arms trade that keeps weapons flowing to human rights abusers — and will not change ownership rules domestically.

stands: Don’t bother. The UN v Second Amendment thing is a conspiracy theory like Fast and Furious, only even more lacking in evidence. And considering even Fast and Furious conspiracies are severely lacking in evidence (but plenty of counter evidence)…. that’s saying something.

I wonder if I’m the only person left who remembers that the original proposal for 400 was to take it all the way to Knoxville? If I remember correctly, that part of the proposal died when it was made clear the that Great Smokey Mtns National Park absolutely would not approve a new roadway through the park, and to go around would have been exorbitantly expensive./
