At the nexus of neology, theology, technology

We’ve all experienced it, and most of us have probably done it:

You’re talking with someone in a social or business situation and a cell phone rings. Maybe it’s your phone; maybe it’s the other person’s. Either way, the previous conversation ends abruptly, because in the modern communications hierarchy the outside phone call or text message generally takes priority over mere face-to-face, human-to-human interaction.

Sure, it’s rude. But most people do it anyway, sometimes with a quick word of apology to the ignored party, but often not. And while some may not find the practice socially acceptable, the battle against it is quickly being lost.

If someone breaks off a face-to-face conversation to text-message or take a cell-phone call, then you have just been

The phenomenon of technological capture can also be more subtle. While the ratio varies from situation to situation, as a rule of thumb I would guess that in any group of people under 50 years of age, an average of one in six has withdrawn from the conversation to page through messages or emails. In my observation, such behavior is highly contagious — once one person does it, others feel they have tacit permission to withdraw as well. The epitome of the phenomenon is the scene of two people, each of them with smart phone in hand, trying to converse face-to-face while also text-messaging to various third parties.

It is, in other words, an increasingly common aspect of modern life. But as far as I can determine, we have invented no term for it. And to tame it, we must name it.

That claim might sound odd to some, but for millenia experts in the human psyche have understood the power of naming. Once given a name, any danger somehow becomes less frightening. Once something is named, our brains can begin to plot to bring it under control.

It is no accident that in the book of Genesis, the animals are brought to Adam one by one so that he can name them, and by doing so establish dominance over them. In some sects, the fact that Adam was granted the right to name Eve is still cited as evidence that God intended man to be superior to woman.

Conversely, in the Jewish tradition the name of G-d can neither be uttered nor written, because He cannot and should not be captured in a word.

So, back to the original question: What do we call this phenomenon? We can’t develop social norms for something that we can’t even name. The phrase used above, “technological capture,” might be descriptive but it is also bulky and awkward. I don’t think it’s going to catch on.

Therefore, I propose the problem be “crowdsourced,” itself a new phenomenon that could not be understood until it was named. Suggest a term and throw it out, to see what catches on. Earn a little bit of immortality by making a contribution to the English language.

My own lame proposal is to call it an “e-ruption,” with the verb form “e-rupt”. As in, “it’s rude to e-rupt a conversation.” Or “don’t e-rupt me, bro.” Or “the conversation was so boring that I had to fake an e-ruption to escape.”

Reminds me of a story I read many years ago. Someone gave the advice that you should have your phone near a door, so that if you needed to get out of a call you could reach out, ring the doorbell, and then say you had to go – someone was at the door. The person who relayed that story said she just always said “I’ve got to go, got a phone call” and then hung up before the othe person realized when she just said.

Rude behaviour is the fault of the person’s parents.

When this occurs IRL and it’s not a boss doing it, I just leave. When some person comes over near my table at a restaurant to have a chat on his phone, I join in till they leave. Always with a smile of course…

Washington Post Admints Lying about Romeny Outsourcing Jobs While at Bain Capital

After being caught for the third time in as many months coordinating with the Obama campaign to attack Mitt Romney, the Washington Post finally — in the most cowardly and slippery manner imaginable — came clean today regarding the provably false charge that the presumptive GOP nominee outsourced American jobs during his tenure at Bain Capital:

The above is a reprint from the Washington Examiner. The news isn’t that the Washington Post lied. We all know that the Obama controlled news organizations lie whenever it can to help the president. The news is they admitted it. Honesty is very strange coming froma liberal organization.

Maybe I’m just weird that way.

Jay it already has a name. It is called “rude”. My friends, relatives and business associates know I will not interupt a conversation to answer the phone or a text message. They may leave a message or call back. When at dinner I put the phone on buzz and leave it in the car. when at home I ignore it or answer with a mesage that I am busy and will call back. Jay,

Your provided case study does not include the fact that the amount paid by a family that is Federally mandated to do so is a tax increase on that family. To otherwise deny it is a simple fallacy of the facts. Where do these new taxes get added and what % of GDP does this effect? This is also the largest regressive tax in the history of the country.

“The median U.S. family income is about $50,000. Family health coverage can easily run $20,000 a year — and rising quickly. In that scenario, the coverage mandate is essentially a 40 percent tax on that family, which is now required by law to ensure that every family member has qualifying coverage.”

Erwin’s cat,

That seattle restaurant policy sounds good. I really don’t care that much if someone has a cell conversation in a restaurant except that the problem is that often the person can’t hear the person they are talking to so they raise their voice louder and louder. Or they think they person they are talking to can’t hear them so they get louder and louder and LOUDER.

You can purchase one of those jammers for a pretty reasonable price I think $50-$100 or so. I’ve been meaning to do it just to use in a movie theater only. And even then I would give the person 10 seconds to tell the caller he’s in a movie theater and he’ll call him later. But if a conversation ensues its zapper time. And I wouldn’t use it in a restaurant unless someone is getting super loud and becoming an annoyance. Would be funny to see the look on their face when they keep getting zapped.

She sluffed me. He’s sluffing.

Variant spelling of ’slough’ – as in ‘to shed dead tissue.’ Like she’s sluffing us off like we’re dead.

Takes after ‘punked’ and ’slammed.’ Not a word comprised of part of the word it’s about. It’s a recognizable term that can be used as a verb (she’s sluffing at dinner) or a noun (he’s a hardcore sluffer.).

I find it curious that over the last 25-30 years we have surrendered all of our personal lives to the technological demons. Since Bell first said “Watson, come here; I want you.” we have been at the mercy of any idiot that was capable of making some kind of electrical connection. Now folks voluntarily expose their whole lives through social networking services.

Human society has become more and more like a beehive, in which no individual has any identity apart from the group.

I read the AJC article but not an indepth article on his reasons why. I just figured that’s his business. Made it sound like it was just a formality for him. I had no idea the man was Gloria Vanderbilt’s son. That bit of info was much more interesting to me.

Yep. Its made life more and more impersonal. Another thing I’ve noticed is that everyday it seems someone in the news is having to retract a tweet because its something that they would never say in person to a group of thousands of people but yet they mistakenly do in a tweet. I notice in email conversation some people get a little meaner and nastier behind a keyboard. And hell half the things we say to each other on this forum we probably wouldn’t say in person due to the constraints of public decency and proper decor.

AC tells a funny story about his other roots. During Katrina one of CNNs trucks went off the road and a couple of Bubbas came along and helped them out. One of ‘em says, “y’all work for CNN. You might know our cousin who works there.” The crew was sorta like “unh-hunh like we know everybody there” figuring they were talking about some clerk, technician or what have you. So when they said, “what’s his name and where does he work?” in a not completely gentlemanly fashion, Bubba says, “Anderson. Anderson Cooper. He does the news.” When the crew was mentioning it to AC, he says, “oh, yeah I got family all over around here.”

When one of the talking heads he was on a panel with during the Mississippi primary took a swipe at the Magnolia State, AC fixed him in a stare and said, ever the gentleman, “I go to my family reunion in Quitman.” It had its effect!

Once it was said that videos were killing the radio songs. Now cellphones and computers are killing the human aspect of communication. There is much to be learned by actually having to look a person in the face and to talk to that person. There are things in human communication that cannot be replaced by speaking via computer or phone. The “Human Nuance” if you will. If you took two people that think that they hate each other via their communication by electronic media, they just may find they have much more in common than they would have ever thought if they had to speak face to face. Then again, they may just hate each other! The point being, either way, we are all too isolated now and the electronics are the cause of it. The anonymity created by the electronic world enables people to be what they think and say what they want to without any repercussions or even any human reaction. I am not sure that is good.

Flip flopper and anthropogenic climate change?

As governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney championed what he called a “no regrets” policy on climate change. He came into office vowing to eliminate the state’s SUV fleet and to close its dirtiest power plant. In 2004, his administration outlined a sweeping long-term vision for cutting the state’s emissions, improving efficiency, and promoting sustainable development that was considered among the most aggressive in the country.

That was then.

As with his virtually all of his positions on other hot-button issues, he has reinvented himself to toe the line with the power brokers in the anti-science party. (hat tip Jon Huntsman).

The man is the absolute epitome of a sell out.

It never ceases to amaze me how people, many of whom are supposed to know better, lump together “biased, prejudiced and bigoted” together as if they were synonyms. I got ticked one time when somebody “accused” me of being “prejudiced against Northerners.” Unmentionable says, “no, he’s not.” He was immediately given a list of some of my less good neighbor policy statements, “and you mean to try and tell me he’s NOT prejudiced.” Unmentionable says, “well, look at what you cited. It makes my point, he’s not prejudiced at all,” The splutter went near apoplectic, “How can you say that?” “Well,” Unmentionable says, “prejudice implies some forethought. He doesn’t even bother. He’s not prejudiced. He’s bigoted!”

And that’s a point I try to make with some of our posters who don’t think twice about their comments on “those people” whoever those people may be. They’re not biased. They’re not prejudiced. They’re downright bigoted.

Going tribal for a minute here, but when Bruno and I tangle on that, I try to make that point of how central mentoring is to the tribal identity. It’s not something you “choose” to do, it’s something you are obligated to do.

You already know the role of the woman’s brothers among our local Noble Savages. When our boys’ parents died and they came to stay with us, folks kept telling Unmentionable how “good” he was to do that. They simply could not grasp that it was his role, his obligation, and to not do it was to turn his back on the tribe. That he took that obligation with joy and gratefulness is what spoke to his character, not that he was doing it.

============================================

Josef, I see that you are still attempting to depict me as a caricature on this blog. Do you not realize that painting a person in stereotype dehumanizes that person and, thus, takes away their humanity? To paint a person in caricature is the worst type of insult that you can give another person because, when you do that, you try dehumanize your target. I wrote recently on this blog that “insulting is verbal abuse.” I believe you do know what you are doing and that you are still attempting to demean my thinking, and to diminish my credibililty on this blog, through deliberately trying to present me as a caricatured human being. However, what you do not realize is that you are playing a losing adolescent game (not with me, but with yourself), because I am not a caricature, nor is any other human being a caricature.

I told you before that it takes a small person to do what you are attempting to do regarding me. I am saddened by you, that you have such a small-minded need to be played out, here, at my expense, for whatever reason you have for doing so. Please do not attempt to say that you were simply being light-hearted and that I should be less serious-minded. There is a history, here, between us which denies that simple, surface perception. I do not hate you for what you have been attempting to do at my expense, but I do not respect what you have been doing. I hope that you will reflect on what you have been trying to do and, at least, attempt to stop it. What you are attempting to do, in my regard, demeans you, not me.

“Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint. Both have trouble walking and appear to require hip surgery.

The FIRST patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week.

The SECOND sees his family doctor after waiting 3 weeks for an appointment, then waits 8 weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray, which isn’t reviewed for another week and finally has his surgery scheduled for 6 months from then pending the review boards decision on his age and remaining value to society.

Why the different treatment for the two patients?

The FIRST is a Golden Retriever taken to a vet.

The SECOND is a Senior Citizen on Obama care…

In November if He and his Czars get another term, we’ll all have to find a good vet! “

I had my struggles, couldn’t relate to the other students, etc. but this is ridiculous !!

“Among the approximately 800,000 military veterans now attending U.S. colleges, an estimated 88 percent drop out of school during their first year and only 3 percent graduate, according a report forwarded by the University of Colorado Denver, citing the analysis by U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education and Labor and Pensions.”

If that figure is true, then our tax dollars are being wasted with that approach. There has to be a better idea/way.

Trying to get the blog back on track (talk about getting off subject)….

I never cease to be amazed at how inconsiderate people and, yes they tend to be the under 30 crowd are. I am not picking on them or harbor any ill will on them but…..

Whether it is standing on a train a Hartsfield, riding the elevator at work, urinating in a men’s room or sweating like a pig at the gym – technology haunts me. I can’t escape it.

I take a couple of spin classes at a local gym each week. On my Friday afternoon session (a great way to start the weekend), there is a very nice 20-something woman who invariably takes the bike next to mine (not because she is interested in me for heaven’s sake).

But each time the instructor gives us a brief recovery to towel off, catch our breath and grab some water she is checking her text messages and firing off a couple.

The same happens while sitting around a pool, eating at a restaurant or enjoying a museum. There is a generation of technology-obsessed individuals that cannot separate themselves from their technology for even an hour.

I love my technology but I have to find time to get away from it.

Not sure what name to give it, but there’s a way to get somebody off the phone when they do. Look them dead in the eye and tell them “phone check”. If they’re in the know, they’ll un-ass the phone..

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=phone+check

My work environment is a no electronics/phones area. It never fails when I use that term. Whether they speak English or not, they kinda get the meaning. I guess it helps if you give them the look like they should expect reprecussions if they don’t get off the phone. :)

Thanks Brosephus….I’ll try that but I am afraid she will look at me like I have lost my mind.

I have considered joining a different gym that I know has a no-tolerance policy on use of phones anywhere except in the public waiting area in the front of the club. This is probably a good legal strategy in the event someone does some photography in the locker rooms or elsewhere. The club can claim they have a no tolerance policy and the offender clearly violated their stated policy.

But it is attractive. No phones while working out. Heck part of my reason for going to the gym is to de-stress, de-stress from all the e-mails, phone calls, text messages, etc. from the work day. Why would I want that to follow me to “my time”?

.
Sirimavo Bandaranaike

A house wife to a president, she took his place when he was assasinated. She was elected president, which was from public sympathy for her husband’s murder.

She ruled that all foreign businesses, which were operating in Sri Lanka, should be stolen from the owners by the government. Think of a shop like Ikea, being stolen by the British from the Swedish, and you’ll get an idea of how unfair that is. As a result of this, Britain and the US imposed sanctions on Sri Lanka.

She imposed wide spread social change on her country, her communist interventionist beauraucracies, stifled business, leading to economic downslide, unemployment, and starvation. In 1973, rationing had to be imposed due to these problems, that she caused.

She acted as a dictator. She first took over the country’s largest newspaper, enforcing censorship on it. Then she shut down the “Independant newspaper group”, which was a harsh critic of her dictatorial ways. I can imagine it was probably done with violence, and certainly with force.

Sirimavo increased and refused to let up, the situation of police and state violence against the Tamil minority. There has been both an ongoing state violence against the Tamils under her rule, and occasions of genocide in which mobs and the state collude against the Tamils. The Tamil’s non-violent freedom leader Thanthai Chelva, was ignored by her. Under her rule, the Sri Lankan government, which collected taxes from all the people, neglected the Tamil areas in national development schemes.

Going back in time to the earlier part of her career… Her country, had more than one main language. Sinhala and Tamil. The Sinhalese who spoke Sinhala, are the majority of the country’s population.

Her first move after she came to power, was to increase the historical oppression against the Tamils, by ruling that Sinhalese should be used for all government business. Before then, English was used, as the unifying language. (Quite a good idea I think to use English as a unifying language! After all, it is the worlds most commonly spoken language, especially in scientific communities, who have a great need to converse.)

This action meant that most Tamil in government, were unable to continue their government. The Tamils, responded by non-violent civil disobediance. Sirimavo responded to this, by declaring a state emergency. This language change, and state of emergency happened within one year of her election victory.

Sirimavo was banned from politics for 7 years, for abuse of power.

Strangely, at times, she was much liked abroad by the political leaders (at the top, like Prime Ministers and Presidents) from other countries. This was because she was a woman, and they were too far away to have to up with the deaths and loss of living standards she caused.

I got to call home each Saturday night and to do so I would walk over to the wall, take the handset off the left side of the wooden phone box; put it to my ear and then crank the handle on the right side of the phone box one long time to get the operator (usually my older cousin) in the little town about 15 miles away.

Nice try Corporal, but Veterinarians aren’t obligated to take in uninsured Golden Retrievers and treat them at great losses that you and I must cover through our insurance premiums and out of pocket expenses, now are they?

Therefore, of course it’s no problem to get your dog in quickly for hip surgery if you’re willing to pay the bill when you check pick the dog up, isn’t it?

Despite holding a narrow lead over his rival, the president informed the supporters that his ability to campaign and broadcast advertisements in key battleground states such as Florida and Ohio directly depended on their generosity.

If given control of the Senate next year, McConnell said he would support using budget reconciliation rules to repeal it. Doing so would prohibit Senate filibusters and require only 51 votes to succeed. In 2010, Republicans lambasted Democrats for relying on these rules to pass the health care bill, calling their tactics unusual and hyperpartisan.

“I’m confident they’re going to give us the votes to repeal it,” he said of the American public. Associated Press

Well, there’s the strategy. It’s out in the open now. If you don’t want Obamacare, then see to it that Republican senators take the majority in the Senate and that Mitt Romney is elected. The strategy requires both events.

“Let me get this straight . . .

We’re going to be “gifted” with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don’t! Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn’t understand it, passed by a Congress that didn’t read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a Dumbo President who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn’t pay his taxes, for which we’ll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese , and financed by a country that’s broke !!!!!

What the hell could possibly go wrong?”

Was it because he promised to close gitmo, – Nope.

and promised not to raise taxes (McCain promised that last one too)? – Nope.

Was it ANY of his promises? – Yup. His promise to usher in a new climate of gov’t. To be more for the voters and less for the monied interest. His promise of transparency. His promise to address the divisiveness in Washington and this country.

Yes, he made promises that he had failed on , IMO.

The point I was making was that all of this vitriol and hate for the bill was partially hinged on tying it to Obama’s name. And now that it has been upheld, all that effort to hinge it on his name will now be a net benefit to Obama, rather than a negative, which was the whole point of 3 years wirth of virtiolic BS.

I think if someone’s going to spend 3 years on the same exact vitriolic BS then you deserve to be smacked in the face over it. And it’s not even the opposition’s hand that does it – it’s their own.

The editor emeritus of The Washington Times has a piece on Roberts that’s a howler, worth sharing.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jul/3/pruden-the-seduction-of-chief-justice-roberts/

Chief Justice Roberts has bequeathed to the rest of us a monstrosity of a health care system, now embedded in the law, where it will only grow, fester and metastasize. Worst of all, Chief Justice Roberts has given Congress, and all the Congresses to follow, the unrestrained power to rob, plunder and pillage as long as they call it a “tax.”

The damage is likely to be catastrophic. The voters, we are confidently told, can fix the damage in November if they elect a new president. That’s an enormous “if,” and absent a George McGovern or Walter Mondale there’s never a slam dunk in presidential politics. Despite his promise to “repeal and replace” as the first act of his presidency, Mitt Romney could have a compliant House but he’s unlikely to inherit a Republican Senate. Without enough congressional allies, all the new president can do is shake his fist while Obamacare grows, festers and metastasizes.

Aww. Sound like someone needs a little cheering up.

Hey JamVet, something to make your day. To file away for all those “but those aren’t subsidies, they’re compensation for risk” and “we have the highest corporate taxes in the world!!!” ypes.

“Old law saves drillers on taxes

“Chesapeake Energy has made $5.5 billion in pretax profits since its founding more than two decades ago. But the second-largest U.S. natural gas producer has paid income taxes on almost none of it.

Chesapeake paid $53 million over its 23-year history, or about 1 percent of the cumulative pretax profits during that period, data compiled by Bloomberg show. That’s less than half the compensation received by CEO Aubrey McClendon in 2008 alone, for example.

“…The company and other U.S. oil and gas producers can thank a century-old rule that allows them to postpone income taxes in recognition of the inherent risk of drilling wells that may turn out to be dry. The break may be outdated for companies such as Chesapeake, which thanks to advances in technology struck oil or gas in 99.6 percent of its wells last year…”

I disagree

To pay for the expansion of Medicaid, financial resources will have to be taken from everyone else

A good portion of thos people live at the margin, and will therefore have to elect to stop paying for something (possibly even health insurance, or maybe it’s buying a safer new car, who knows), and they will be harmed

And since the government does such a poor job of allocating and using Medicaid money, it is probably a net loss to the system

The hospitals have a full-court pressure press underway. Lots of good info about, it’s not just the federal Medicaid dollars lost, it’s the increased costs that occur with nonimplementation.

But remember, we have a deficit well over $10 billion (state’s not exactly sure how much) and a governor who, as we saw in the primary battle, thinks he balanced the state’s budget, so……..

Adam

Actually no, expanding medicaid does NOT cause harm to their constituents. NOT expanding it doesn’t just mean they won’t have coverage, it ALSO means some of them will be assessed that individual mandate penalty. And regardless of what the states do or do not do with Medicaid, the same number of people making over 200/250k or getting capital gains or using tanning beds etc will STILL pay the same amount in taxes.

NOT expanding Medicaid has only one benefit, and that is to make it more possible that the whole law won’t add tot he deficit by the federal government not having to give the states extra money. And that benefit doesn’t go the Republicans’ way either.

They are placing all their eggs in this basket of assumption that Obama will be blamed if THEY deliberately deny health care to their citizens. I think that’s pretty dumb. Hard red states might not vote them out, but they WILL NOT like that, and they wont’ blame Obama except in that hard right “everything is Obama’s fault” way.

24/7 Wall St.: With the U.S. presidential election heating up, 24/7 Wall St. decided to examine public companies’ political contributions in the current election cycle. The donations include monies given to political parties, candidates, and political action committees. The figures are staggering and have prompted many to ask whether money can buy a seat in the House, Senate, or even the presidency itself.

The Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, the Romney Victory Fund, and the Republican National Committee raised more than $76.8 million in May alone. This one month does not include what Romney and his supporters raised for the primaries, or the growing amount he will need as the presidential election shifts into high gear. While President Obama has raised more overall, his campaign and the Democratic party only raised $60 million for his re-election effort in May.

How plainly can I put this?

It’s not about how the tax laws are now written to benefit a particular industry.

It’s about, //as the headline to the article stated// that those laws are from another time, no longer have the effect they were intended to have with nearly 100% of drilling operations hitting paydirt and that it’s a multibillion-dollar sweetheart deal.
