A little music, and a little perspective
It’s been a rough if interesting week in the world of politics and here on the blog as well. Emotions have flared, expectations have been dashed. Time for the healing power of music, I would say.
But as important as politics might seem to some, a little perspective might be in order. I’ve got a couple of folks in my personal life — relatives by marriage, technically, but over the years they’ve become much more than that description could ever imply — who are facing health issues. One of them has already gone through the fire, so to speak, and has emerged safely on the other side; the second is about to begin that voyage, and we’re gonna make sure she comes through it as well.
So … this one is for Wendy, and for her best friend Ted.

Peadawg, as posted earlier, I think Roberts saw what I and others saw, that the court was indeed in danger of losing the credibility from which its authority flows. So he acted to prevent that outcome, and I laud him for it.
Now … back to the music!

I was in SE Missouri around 1980 when people were dropping like flies in the cities. It was around 110 and the wind would blow like hell all day. Very similar feeling to this.

Most people forget that Halle Berry played a crack head in that movie. Her first movie role was a crack head in Jungle Fever. Her first major starring role in a movie was a drug addict in Losing Isaiah. She did a few movies in between, most notably Boomerang, but I always remember her as starting off as a crack head.
On the other hand, Samuel L was a drug addict who had completed rehab not too long before shooting that movie. I think he was in rehab a year before or something like that.

Well, I hope Bookman’s friend pulls through and lives alot more years. Me, I lost my only surviving uncle on Wednesday morning. He was a good man. Drafted into the Army at the start of WWII, spent almost five years there, came home and married a fine woman, raised a fine son, and spent his life farming and doing some lumber work. He never left the little village where he was born. I use to work in the hayfields with him on his farm when I was a kid. He told me once of seeing his father, who had been dead five years at the time, walking through a hayfield in the distance. Well, I’m hoping Uncle Jed’s back in his prime in a hayfield someplace up there. The farm was the only place where he was happy. Blind, disabled, and miserable in a nursing home, he passed at age 92. His funeral will be held in the little church in the village on Sunday afternoon. Here’s to you, Uncle Jed. It’s from 1959 and it tells the story of your life:

“Chief Justice Roberts Is A Genius

Before you look to do harm to Chief Justice Roberts or his family, it’s important that you think carefully about the meaning – the true nature — of his ruling on Obama-care. The Left will shout that they won, that Obama-care was upheld and all the rest. Let them.
It will be a short-lived celebration.
Here’s what really occurred — payback. Yes, payback for Obama’s numerous, ill-advised and childish insults directed toward SCOTUS.
Chief Justice Roberts actually ruled the mandate, relative to the commerce clause, was unconstitutional. That’s how the Democrats got Obama-care going in the first place. This is critical. His ruling means Congress can’t compel American citizens to purchase anything. Ever. The notion is now officially and forever, unconstitutional. As it should be.
Next, he stated that, because Congress doesn’t have the ability to mandate, it must, to fund Obama-care, rely on its power to tax. Therefore, the mechanism that funds Obama-care is a tax. This is also critical. Recall back during the initial Obama-care battles, the Democrats called it a penalty, Republicans called it a tax. Democrats consistently soft sold it as a penalty. It went to vote as a penalty. Obama declared endlessly, that it was not a tax, it was a penalty. But when the Democrats argued in front of the Supreme Court, they said ‘hey, a penalty or a tax, either way’. So, Roberts gave them a tax. It is now the official law of the land — beyond word-play and silly shenanigans. Obama-care is funded by tax dollars. Democrats now must defend a tax increase to justify the Obama-care law.
Finally, he struck down as unconstitutional, the Obama-care idea that the federal government can bully states into complying by yanking their existing medicaid funding. Liberals, through Obama-care, basically said to the states — ‘comply with Obama-care or we will stop existing funding.’ Roberts ruled that is a no-no. If a state takes the money, fine, the Feds can tell the state how to run a program, but if the state refuses money, the federal government can’t penalize the state by yanking other funding. a serious problem. Are we going to have 10, 12, 25 states not participating in “national” health-care?Therefore, a state can decline to participate in Obama-care without penalty. This is obviously Suddenly, it’s not national, is it?
Ultimately, Roberts supported states rights by limiting the federal government’s coercive abilities. He ruled that the government can not force the people to purchase products or services under the commerce clause and he forced liberals to have to come clean and admit that Obama-care is funded by tax increases.
Although he didn’t guarantee Romney a win, he certainly did more than his part and should be applauded.
And he did this without creating a civil war or having bricks thrown through his windshield. Oh, and he’ll be home in time for dinner.

Chief Justice Roberts did what 8 other justices failed to do- he remained judicial. The others were sadly political. He correctly said this is not a decision for the courts to make. It is a legislative decision, an executive decision and – In the end, the people’s decision – at the ballot box.
Roberts’ decision was not activist. On the contrary, it was an incredible exercise of judicial restraint. He judged the law, not the wisdom of the policy that gave birth to the law.
If the country doesn’t want Obamacare, it simply speaks in November. If Romney wins or loses, we have our answer.

Your 10:41 post is essentially correct on all counts except that the states who opt out of Medicaid expansion will still have to set up exchanges. The federal government will need to subsidize the premium payments in the exchanges for those that the states who opt out won’t otherwise be placing on an expanded Medicaid. Because the Fed then will have to foot the bill for insured expansion in those states who won’t be expanding their Medicaid roles it will mean that all taxpayers will be footing the bill and that will mean raising the tax burden for all income earners who pay tax including the middle class. This will become a huge tax increase that Obama won’t be able to hide from the public as he and his supporters are still attempting to do by referring to it as only a penalty on those who won’t purchase insurance. Romney now has a huge campaign issue placing the Obama campaign on defense right up to November. Additionally, because of the confusion associated with this huge 2700 page law and the S.C. ruling there will be many court challenges ahead including some that could go once again to the SCOTUS.

I’d debate this with you but it appears you know very little about the Supreme Courts upholding AHA on the basis of Congress’s ability to tax and not on the basis of the Commerce Clause along with the implications of striking down the state mandate. No, Nate, the Supreme Court said nothing of the sort.
First, Roberts wrote that while ” the statute reads more naturally as a command to buy insurance than as a tax,” the mandate penalty could still be construed as a tax constitutionally. He said nothing about the size of said tax/penalty, which will be paid by an estimated 1 percent of US taxpayers.
Furthermore, as Politifact points out, the GOP claim that ObamaCare in general imposes “the largest tax increase in history” is total pants-on-fire bunk:
“… the tax increases resulting from the health care law would be about the size of tax increases proposed and passed in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter, in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush and in 1993 by President Bill Clinton.
The health care-related tax increases are smaller than the tax increase signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1982 and a temporary tax signed into law in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson.”
As a percentage of GDP, ObamaCare taxes are roughly 37 percent smaller than the increases signed into law by Reagan in ‘82. But to conservatives, “a tax increase considerably smaller than that signed into law by President Reagan” doesn’t quite have the same ring as “the largest tax increase in history.”
It does have the virtue of being much more accurate, but in these debased times accuracy has little or no value compared to a useful lie.

If the states say all 26 that brought law suit decide to opt out of expanding their medicaid roles to accommodate the expanded income means test of up to 133% above the poverty level what will the Federal government do to ensure health care coverage for those people? The Fed will have to place these folks in the exchanges at taxpayer expense. Also there’s the tax’s within AHA that aren’t discussed such as the tanning tax, cadillac health insurance tax along with several others. Sorry but this is a tax increase that will effect the middle class.

Not sure I get your point, Recon. Why would it matter whether those people are covered through Medicaid or through subsidies in the exchanges? It’s federal money either way.
And yes, there are taxes to support the program. Would you prefer the approach taken by Bush and the Republicans who passed a major Medicare expansion without bothering to fund it, simply adding it to the deficit? Is that what you want?
Finally, in terms of policy, ending the tax subsidy for Cadillac plans is a good idea. Why should taxpayers subsidize — through a 100 percent deduction — overly generous plans that require employees to pay nothing for their own health care, no deductible, etc.?

Jay, only 100% Federal taxpayer dollars for a few years and then a portion, I believe ten% will have to be state funded. Regardless the taxpayers will be footing the bill for all of it, so adding it all up this will be a huge tax increase for all not a penalty tax for only 1% of the population.

The collectivists at MoveOn.org are trumpeting yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling on Obamacare as “a huge victory for people power.” On this point, I agree with them: It is a “victory” for “people” who enjoy “power” over others! The “people” who savor this enormous tax increase are not those who have to pay additional money to the federal government, but the “people” at Big-Pharma, insurance companies, government bureaucracies, and other special interests who will be on the receiving end provided by such increased revenues.
