In another sign of just how screwy things have gotten, Mitt Romney, the GOP nominee for president, steadfastly refuses to get involved in the political debate about immigration. He refuses to offer his own ideas about a national immigration strategy*, and he won’t voice an opinion on President Obama’s controversial decision not to deport illegal aliens who were brought here as young children.
But worry not: A supposedly nonpolitical Supreme Court justice, Antonin Scalia, is eager to jump into the political fray where Romney is too meek to tread. In his radical dissent to today’s ruling on the Arizona immigration law, Scalia argues that Arizona and the other 49 states have the right to exercise “what most would consider the defining characteristic of sovereignty: the power to exclude from the sovereign’s territory people who have no right to be there.”
“Even in its international relations, the federal government must live with the inconvenient fact that it is a Union of independent states, who have their own sovereign powers,” Scalia writes.
Just as remarkably, Scalia used his dissent to lambaste Obama’s decision regarding children of illegal immigrants, slyly referring to “the Executive’s unwise targeting” of available resources to combat illegal immigration.
“The husbanding of scarce enforcement resources can hardly be the justification for this, since the considerable administrative cost of conducting as many as 1.4 million background checks, and ruling on the biennial requests for dispensation that the non-enforcement program envisions, will necessarily be deducted from immigration enforcement,” Scalia complained.
Scalia plays politician; Romney plays possum.
———-
*Note: Here’s the official Romney response to today’s ruling:
“Today’s decision underscores the need for a president who will lead on this critical issue and work in a bipartisan fashion to pursue a national immigration strategy. President Obama has failed to provide any leadership on immigration. This represents yet another broken promise by this president. I believe that each state has the duty — and the right — to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law, particularly when the federal government has failed to meet its responsibilities. As Candidate Obama, he promised to present an immigration plan during his first year in office. But four years later, we are still waiting.”

Darwin — “Scalia also uses his brain power to compare the health care mandate with forcing people to buy broccoli. OK – everyone uses the health care market, and everyone uses the food market. So, why can’t the government force you to buy broccoli.”
Scalia’s analogy is poorly drawn. Broccoli isn’t the *only* foodstuff available in the market.
Show me someone who doesn’t buy *any* food at all, and his argument might grow some legs.

Nope, Ben, Clinton was not anywhere near the liar that Romney is. And the proof would be you list Bill’s and I’ll list Flip’s.
But ain’t no way in hell you’d even try.
Because, a) you don’t do research (being utterly ignorant on such matters is your forte) and b) you know you’d get crushed like a bug…
And here are just a few of the things that you desperately don’t want to know about…
First, there is Romney’s claim that the 2009 stimulus passed by Congress and signed by President Obama “didn’t work”. According to Romney, “that stimulus didn’t put more private-sector people to work.” While one can quibble over whether the stimulus went far enough, the idea that it didn’t create private-sector jobs has no relationship to reality. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the stimulus bill created more than 3m jobs – a view shared by 80% of economists polled by the Chicago Booth School of Business (only 4% disagree).
How stupid a lie is that?
Romney also likes to argue that the stimulus didn’t help private-sector job growth, but rather helped preserve government jobs. In fact, the Obama years have been witness to massive cuts in government employment. While the private sector is not necessarily “doing fine”, as Obama said in a recent White House press conference, it’s doing a heck of a lot better than the public sector.
He knows that the truth is not necessary for you to kiss his ass, though.
Romney also accused Obama of raising taxes – in reality, they’ve gone down under his presidency, and largely because of that stimulus bill that Romney loves to criticize.
Keep kissing.
Romney took credit for the success of the auto bailout – even though he wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post titled “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt”.
Still puckering up, Ben?
He’s said repeatedly that businesses in America see Obama as the “enemy”, and that under his presidency “free enterprise” and economic freedom” are at risk of disappearing. In reality, since taking office, corporate profits, industrial production and the stock market are up, while corporate bankruptcies have actually decreased.
Your lips must be tired by now.
So go ahead and share Bill’s with me.
I’ve got dozens more from your severely conservative hero!
LOL…

Homeland Security suspends immigration agreements with Arizona police
The Washington Times
Monday, June 25, 2012
The Obama administration said Monday it is suspending existing agreements with Arizona police over enforcement of federal immigration laws, and said it has issued a directive telling federal authorities to decline many of the calls reporting illegal immigrants that the Homeland Security Department may get from Arizona police.
Administration officials, speaking on condition they not be named, told reporters they expect to see an increase in the number of calls they get from Arizona police — but that won’t change President Obama’s decision to limit whom the government actually tries to detain and deport.
Isn’t this nice? More laws the Obamanazis refuse to enforce! We must play by their illegal rules or they will take their ball and go home. More evidence of how dangerous this administration is.

Yes but, only one Supreme Court justice agreed with him. This ruling will stand the test of time. Like it or not.
Romney should come up with a plan for the federal government to meet “its responsibilities”, and he should state what needs to cut from the budget, to pay for it. It is all about resource allocation, especially for tough times, and high deficits. Congress doesn’t have to wait for the next election to get it done. Please get something done.

But at the same time, this doesn’t mean I think the government should be supervising health care. I do not trust it for that role.

The Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus was appointed by Obama. He created the “Great Green Fleet” program. This program is different from the one you mistakenly pointed out. The Dept. of Defense experimented with biofuels as a defense mechanism merely by testing Air Force equipment to make sure it was compatible in the event that supply chains were disrupted from the Middle East. Rather than create trade agreements with friendly nations like Canada and Mexico, the Obama administration has decided to mandate the purchase of biofuels. GLOBAL biofuel production is 25,000 barrels a day. The Navy uses 1.2mm gallons of marine diesel per day. Regardless of when the idea was created, it was a stupid idea then and it is a stupid idea now. Cancelling this program now would save U.S. taxpayers millions. Unfortunately, that would require the President to admiy he made a mistake. Obama is too focussed on re-election to do anything positive for all Americans, he has to concentrate his time on fund raising and pandering to special interest voting blocs.

Who pressured Justice to drop case against voter intimidation in Philly? After screaming for 8 years about Bush “politicizing” the Justice Department, it appears that there is a clear cut case of interference in a legitimate prosecution of the New Black Panther Party for intimidating voters at a polling station in 2008 by Obama appointees.
Charges Against ‘New Black Panthers’ Dropped by Obama Justice Dept.. Charges brought against three members of the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense under the Bush administration have been dropped by the Obama Justice Department, FOX News has learned. The charges stemmed from an incident at a Philadelphia polling place on Election Day 2008 when three members of the party were accused of trying to threaten voters and block poll and campaign workers by the threat of force — one even brandishing what prosecutors call a deadly weapon.

The United States declared war on Japan, which prompted Germany (and Italy, snicker) to declare war on the United States. But as I said; comparing US participation in WWII (we were among the last major power to enter the war) with Afghanistan and Iraq is silly. I encourage all to read The Amateur to understand what was elected in 2008. Even the black leaders in Chicago who supported him in the early days have turned on Obama. They soon found out that they were used by him and that Obama was and is only concerned about one thing and that is himself. He is not concerned with this country, its people or anybody else. He is only concerned about his legacy. At this point, he doesn’t have a legacy, he has a fiasco. Early on, he knew that he could only be elected because of his skin color and he chose to use it to his full advantage and in the course of this, he used many, many people who wanted to believe in him. He was not a competent state Senator nor a decent US Senator. Of course, I don’t expect Obama supporters to read the book because they do not want to know the truth about their messiah.

OK folks, let’s be honest. the term “illegal immigrants” is poli-speak. these people are undocumented workers. their presence in the United States is no different than the thousands of students, wannabe actors, ski bums, and other Asian, European, and African workers who call the United States home. It is very simple; as noted my many others, make it illegal to hire undocumented workers; or require employers to hire whomever they like, as long as they secure the proper (legal) “documentation” (MLB franchises do it all the time).
They BOTH suck

It is all about supply and demand……. There is a demand therefore the supply will be met.
No different than the weak drug war that we have been engaging in for 40 yrs.
I can honestly say that Scout more than another who wants illegals gone has always mentioned the business owners that hire illegals and how we have failed to properly go after them.
Regardless of one’s stance on the issue, the illegals are the result not the cause. The catalyst more than anything are the employers.

“That’s true, but this is how our government has seen fit to handle the matter. You’re certainly free, though, to press your elected representatives to change things.”
Yes, perhaps because elected officials on both sides of the isle never meant to take the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 seriously (and obviously). I suppose that will all change when an illegal immigrant they don’t deport turns out to be a terrorist who sets off a nuclear dirty bomb. I guess there will be no end to the hearings then…

BTW, I don’t want them gone – I just want people to be here legally and fairly (however that come to happen). It is indisputably the right thing.

Obama just loves inviting known terrorists to the Whitehouse, doesn’t he?His latest is Egyptian terrorist Hani Nour Eldin. Now why would an American president condone visits to our Capital from known terrorists? I think the man actually relates to them.

Towncrier. Interesting thread. do you know how many of the 9/11 terrorists were here “illegally” vis a vis how many were here legally? AND, in the case of those here illegally; why didn’t the Bush White House demonstrate leadership in terms of immigration reform and round them up to be deported? don’t tell Soothsayer (or Charlie Sheen) I said this, but one might think the U.S. government WANTS an illegal immigrant to detonate a dirty bomb.

Like you and I were saying the other day, this is not a partisan issue. If you and I (of all people!) can find common ground, then so can the politicians. That they don’t means they just flat ain’t listening to folks like me and you…
