In another sign of just how screwy things have gotten, Mitt Romney, the GOP nominee for president, steadfastly refuses to get involved in the political debate about immigration. He refuses to offer his own ideas about a national immigration strategy*, and he won’t voice an opinion on President Obama’s controversial decision not to deport illegal aliens who were brought here as young children.
But worry not: A supposedly nonpolitical Supreme Court justice, Antonin Scalia, is eager to jump into the political fray where Romney is too meek to tread. In his radical dissent to today’s ruling on the Arizona immigration law, Scalia argues that Arizona and the other 49 states have the right to exercise “what most would consider the defining characteristic of sovereignty: the power to exclude from the sovereign’s territory people who have no right to be there.”
“Even in its international relations, the federal government must live with the inconvenient fact that it is a Union of independent states, who have their own sovereign powers,” Scalia writes.
Just as remarkably, Scalia used his dissent to lambaste Obama’s decision regarding children of illegal immigrants, slyly referring to “the Executive’s unwise targeting” of available resources to combat illegal immigration.
“The husbanding of scarce enforcement resources can hardly be the justification for this, since the considerable administrative cost of conducting as many as 1.4 million background checks, and ruling on the biennial requests for dispensation that the non-enforcement program envisions, will necessarily be deducted from immigration enforcement,” Scalia complained.
Scalia plays politician; Romney plays possum.
———-
*Note: Here’s the official Romney response to today’s ruling:
“Today’s decision underscores the need for a president who will lead on this critical issue and work in a bipartisan fashion to pursue a national immigration strategy. President Obama has failed to provide any leadership on immigration. This represents yet another broken promise by this president. I believe that each state has the duty — and the right — to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law, particularly when the federal government has failed to meet its responsibilities. As Candidate Obama, he promised to present an immigration plan during his first year in office. But four years later, we are still waiting.”

Last I knew, two wrongs don’t make a right. I understand your rationale, but I think granting them licenses is just making it easy for them to remain illegal and even perhaps vote illegally. Besides, I think many insurers want you to have uninsured motorists protection on a car that is still being paid for. It is not the solution to the problem. imo.

I wonder why you haven’t gotten all over Obama for his lies and omissions in the drug war. The lie was that he said he wouldn’t raid marijuana businesses and growers that complied with state law, yet he has gone on to do so. The omission is that whenever people ask him about drugs, he laughs and refuses to take it seriously. When the White House had a poll about questions Obama would answer, pot legalization issues were the public’s number one request, and Obama laughed it off. As if all the unjust death and imprisonment caused by these policies are a meaningless joke. It’s not meaningless, but his refusal to even discuss it sure is political! He obviously cares more about winning an election than doing what is right, or doing anything to help people.
But hey, go one and heap scorn on Scalia. Easy target, and you won’t get attacked by sycophants like you would if you really criticized the bringer of light.

“Well, except for when he said he supported the Arizona law…”
Nothing wrong in saying that because the Arizona law in essence is the same as existing Federal immigration law. The Supremes didn’t rule that it was a bad law, they ruled that crafting and enforcing immigration law belongs to the Federal government’s authority and not to the state. The Court did not rule on the correctness or incorrectness of the Obama administrations refusal to enforce existing immigration law.

There will be an immigration overhaul regardless of who goes in and the plan will be pretty much the same. The idea of the dream act will be the first step since even among conservatives (not the nasty tempered “herd ‘em all up and roll ‘em out” back to the generation MY ancestors arrived) there is a hesitancy to punish the children for the sins of the fathers. Next there will be a triage andf those who have long established ties in the country and who have sunk roots here will be granted some form of amnesty, possibly including a path to citizenship. For those more recent arrivals with less ties to the country but good records and individuals willing to step up and speak their case, there will be some form of revised “work permit.” That will lower the number to be Removed (most interesting terminology there) to the Jacksonianly manageable. There’ll be enough debate on the details of the overall plan to satisfy the squabble happy, imauo.

“Hey Paul…my question to you is “Where the heck is Obama’s Immigartion Pln”
I know, Steve. You keep repeating that whenever anyone asks you what the boilerplate, strung-together buzzwords on Romney’s site actually mean.
I know you like one-click, simple pages, but if you did a bit of research you’d find Pres Obama’s made all sorts of calls for immigration reform, such as his recent State of the Union.
“”I believe as strongly as ever that we should take on illegal immigration. That’s why my administration has put more boots on the border than ever before. That’s why there are fewer illegal crossings than when I took office. The opponents of action are out of excuses. We should be working on comprehensive immigration reform right now.
But if election-year politics keeps Congress from acting on a comprehensive plan, let’s at least agree to stop expelling responsible young people who want to staff our labs, start new businesses, defend this country. Send me a law that gives them the chance to earn their citizenship. I will sign it right away.”
So while he put boots on the border, increased deportations, fined corporations more in a few months than the previous administration did in eight years, he still called on Congress for more. With a bit of research you, too, can find out how the House did on that.
Bottom line is this: while Obama’s efforts may not have been consistent, while he may not have brought consistent pressure to bear on Congress, that in no way translates to implying that Romney has any specifics of his own that could be used as a vote proposal by Congress.
“I am sitting here laughing at the lack of intelligence from the Left..”
And Steve, we’re not laughing at those who read Romney’s buzzwords and think they constitute a plan. We don’t consider it polite to laugh at those so unfortunate.

Excellent point. Hispanic unemployment in the U.S. is 11%. Mexican unemployment as of May 2012 is 5%. Rather than focus on trade agreements with friendly nations that have stronger economies, Obama continues to blatantly pander to special interest groups to try to buy votes at taxpayer expense. This weekend Barron’s had an interesting article on how the Obama administration issued a mandate forcing the U.S. Navy (the largest buyer of diesel in the world) to purchase a 50/50 biofuel/petroleum mix for the fleet with an average cost of $26 per gallon versus $4 per gallon for diesel that the rest of the world uses.Of course the biofuels come from Obama bundlers in Energy Dept. projects. Another great example of how this administration is completely clueless and out of touch with reality. At a time when the economy is struggling and the Navy is retiring a significant part of the U.S. fleet due to budget cuts, taxpayers are supporting a failed program paying 5 times the global average price because Obama simply does not know what he is doing. The goods news is that the President is partying with Cee-low and Tyler Perry again this week and we now have an additional 800,000 Hispanics in the U.S. looking for work with the rest of the population.

The Obamacratic Administration is the most racist and lawless administration in my life time. This administration through our no Justic Department has ignored crimes when committed by its favored minorities. Examples include the black thugs that were video taped using clubs and threats to prevent white voters from voting. In spite of the visual evidence proving the crimes beyond shadow of doubt, the no Justice Department against advice of its own attorneys dropped the charges in violation of law as well as decency. The no Justice Department has repeatedly refused to enforce federal immigration laws. The no Justice Department is at present failing to investigate the murder of one of our fellow ciizens and in fact is obstructing justice in that case and is violating contempt of congress law with the full knowledge and assistance of the president. The president himself has ordered the no Justice Department to not obey laws passed by our elected representives. President Obama prior to his election admitted he did not like our constitution, the one document that protects us from abuse from elected representives like him. This administration has proven over and over that it has no respect for our constitution or any of our laws that Obama or Holder disagree with. Whats next? There are no limits to the total disregard and contempt this Obama Administration has for our Country and our constitutional guaranteed rights. For the first time in my life I am ashamed of and in fear our government. Time is running out on the greatest nation in the history of the world. We must collectively stop our slide into another dictator controlled third world economy by defeating the four year Obama monarchy this November. A monarchy that falsely claims to believe in the once greatness of this country.

I find this whole discussion interesting but distressing.
Republicans charge that Democrats love all the illegals here so they can vote for their free benefits. Democrats charge that Republicans want to split up families while being torn by their need to support their corporate masters.
Neither statement is true. I think both sides can agree that we need to establish control over people coming into the country. We want a compassionate policy but one that is based in law and is consistent.
Why can’t Congress come together and further those objectives? The answer is simple. Both sides are pandering to their constituents. Neither side is advancing the interests of the country.
Until we get back to civility, bipartisanship and negotiation our nation is frozen in time. We don’t progress but we may slide backward. It is up to citizens to demand engagement from both sides. I think I heard that the U.S. House of Representatives will only be working for 28 days from now to election day. What is up with that? We give them 4 months of summer vacation? How does this stuff continue to get recycled?
The Department of Defense had a huge biofuels research program years before Pres Obama took office. It was pushed hard by general officers who consider it a national security issue – specifically to get away from ‘fuel the rest of the world uses” that comes from the Mideast.

… after watching Mitt Romney run for president the past few months, he makes John McCain look like George Washington (of “I Can’t Tell A Lie” fame).
Granted, presidential candidates are no strangers to disingenuous or overstated claims; it’s pretty much endemic to the business. But Romney is doing something very different and far more pernicious. Quite simply, the United States has never been witness to a presidential candidate, in modern American history, who lies as frequently, as flagrantly and as brazenly as Mitt Romney.
My personal favorite in Romney’s cavalcade of untruths is his repeated assertion that President Obama has apologized for America. In his book, appropriately titled “No Apologies”, Romney argues the following:
“Never before in American history has its president gone before so many foreign audiences to apologize for so many American misdeeds, both real and imagined. It is his way of signaling to foreign countries and foreign leaders that their dislike for America is something he understands and that is, at least in part, understandable.”
Nothing about this sentence is true.

“If employers didn’t hire illegal aliens, there wouldn’t be any illegal aliens.
How complicated is that?”
If we give them drivers licenses like JamVet says we’re crazy not to, how do we know they’re illegal?
How complicated is that?

How complicated is that?”
If government didn’t give them foodstamps, drivers licenses and cellphones, they wouldn’t be here.
How complcated is that?

Curious — “JHM Thanks.”
Thank you for reading it.
It should be pretty obvious to anyone with an attention span and the reading ability of a middle-schooler than I’m not in favor of unrestricted immigration, but people who are motivated more by partisanship and rhetoric are clearly more interested in arguing than in solving problems.

Hey now, take it easy on the Right Wingers. It’s not their fault that they got stuck having to support the guy who lost to the guy who lost to Obama.

“Quite simply, the United States has never been witness to a presidential candidate, in modern American history, who lies as frequently, as flagrantly and as brazenly as Mitt Romney.”
LMAO. Bill Clinton????

“If employers didn’t hire illegal aliens, there wouldn’t be any illegal aliens.”
Might also add…and if the Federal Government would aggressively prosecute employers who hire illegal aliens and discontinue suing states that attempt to prosecute employers that do so there would be a lot less jobs for illegal aliens resulting in a lot less illegal aliens.

I think liberals honestly believe in their mind that if they read something on a leftwing blog or hear a foaming at the mouth pundit say it on TV it must be true…

Looks like someone is trying real hard to compensate for what they lack. Just saying.
So, 2nd Amendment Supporter, where’s your FNM entry?? I can only hope you can aspire to be something more in life than a sideline sniper……
Speaking of which, where’s your entry, Jam?? I think everyone would be interested in hearing about your experience hanging out with Todd Rundgren in Hawaii. Maybe even the part about your delightful friend that you met there.

Bruno — “However, to start insulting people’s families, particularly their GFs, wives or children is not acceptable.”
Agreed. Doom once tried to slag on my wife shortly after he and I first tangled, but he’s not done it since.
I might get in a good-natured poke at someone’s spouse once in a while (my favorite jab is to ask someone if his wife was still sticky from all the stamps when they got married), but anything more than that is totally off-limits IMO. And I *never* diss someone’s kids, parents or pets.
Siblings are another matter, though. I’ve got a dirtbag for a younger brother and you can talk smack about him all you like.

“This administration through our no Justic Department has ignored crimes when committed by its favored minorities. Examples include the black thugs that were video taped using clubs and threats to prevent white voters from voting. In spite of the visual evidence proving the crimes beyond shadow of doubt, the no Justice Department against advice of its own attorneys dropped the charges in violation of law as well as decency.”
Excuse me, but this was the BUSH Justice Department’s handling of the Panthers…….don’t revise history!!

Scalia also uses his brain power to compare the health care mandate with forcing people to buy broccoli. OK – everyone uses the health care market, and everyone uses the food market. So, why can’t the government force you to buy broccoli. OK, Justice Brainchild. When people don’t buy broccoli, but use it, they’re stealing. When people use health care, but don’t pay for the services rendered, they’re stealing. The cost of broccoli is not determined by the people not eating it. But the cost of health care IS determined by the people using it but not paying for it. Simple enough?
