Bill Kristol offers solution: Yep, you guessed it

War.

Whatever the problem, the ever-eager Bill Kristol believes that other people dying can solve it. The ardent cheerleader of our invasion of Iraq, where more than 4,400 U.S. soldiers died for a cause yet to reveal itself, now champions that same “solution” for Iran, a much more difficult problem. And in a piece in the Weekly Standard, complete with requisite Churchill quote, he and co-author Jamie Fly argue that if President Obama doesn’t do it, Congress should intervene:

Bill Kristol

Bill Kristol

“President Obama says a nuclear Iran is unacceptable. The real and credible threat of force is probably the last hope of persuading the Iranian regime to back down. So: Isn’t it time for the president to ask Congress for an Authorization for Use of Military Force against Iran’s nuclear program?

Instead of running away from it, administration officials could be putting the military option front and center and ensuring it is seen as viable. And if the administration flinches, Congress could consider passing such an authorization anyway. While any commander in chief has the constitutional authority to take urgent action to protect Americans and their interests, such legislation would give weight to the president’s commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. It would strengthen the president’s hand. It would show Tehran that America’s policy of preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon is a credible one. Bipartisan support for such an authorization would remove the issue as much as possible from the turmoil of election year politics. And the authorization could also make clear that the United States would come to Israel’s aid in the event that it decides it needs to take action….

We don’t expect the Obama administration to request an Authorization for Use of Military Force. But Congress can act without such a request. By doing so, it would serve the nation’s interest, and, indeed, the administration’s, if the administration means what it says.

Surely it is time for a concentration of congressional opinion and force capable of lifting our efforts to the level of emergency. The Obama administration may be committed to leading from behind, but Congress can choose to lead from the front.

You can try to make it partisan all you want, but all it does is make you look classless. Regardless to what anybody does in life, there is nobody alive with the moral authority to judge his sin. My wishes come from my Christian faith and transcends politics altogether. If your thinking is too shallow to see or acknowledge such, then may God have mercy on you.

I agree with what you said.

There are plenty of people who I don’t particularly care for and who are not particularly nice people. However, wishing they rest in peace (and a peace they never knew in this life, for whatever reason) does not alter one whit my opinion of them in life. Later, the wake over, we can “go off on” the sociological and personal. Right now, let his soul go to his M*ker for judgment.

Brocephus,

I disagree. Seems to be there is too much excuse making from people on the left regarding anti-social behavior and not enough demands for people to simply act and live life in a decent manner.

“Regardless to what anybody does in life, there is nobody alive with the moral authority to judge his sin.”

Bullspit liberal gobbledeegook. We don’t have the moral authority to judge his afterlife. God does that. But we damn sure do have the moral authority to judge his actions on earth. We do it everyday in courts of law sir. We do it when a jury convicts a heinous murderer to death. We do it when a judge hands down lengthy sentences for all manner of crimes from robbery to rape to beating and threatening women to DUI- several crimes of which Mr. King committed. So you can dispense with your damn ridiculous bullspitting crap about making judgments. Judges, juries, and people in general do it every freaking day. And they should.

Recon,

The inconsistency is appalling. No one says let Hitler’s soul rest in peace. Why? Because we have already judged him and many others like him to be bad, horrible people. Making a judgment like that on Rodney King is no different.

I’ve no sympathy for a man that has a well documented past of beating women, of making death threats against them, and even of running into his wife with a 4,000 lb car. In the same way that people routinely judge Hitler as a bad person without a second thought I will judge Rodney King as being a sorry ass person. Eff him. It will be up to God what happens to him for eternity.

I like beer but can’t consume anywhere near what I could in younger years. Fortunately, with the help of some neighbors we finally have the keg done to where one person can lift it with one arm. Rodney king (rip) said it best, “can we all just get a bong?”.
Man, is tiger woods finished or what. He’ll always be in contention, but he’ll win as much as the other top twenty. Golf depends on the golfer’s state of mind. Many have mastered golf technique, but few have mastered the Zen of golf, that is, the application of disciplinary mindset that forms the basis for behavior. Choices reflect mindset. Tigers choices predicted his fall. He stinks. His ex really got even and totally broke his heart and soul. We’ve all been there, and faltered just as bad. He’s no god, he bleeds red.

It doesn’t. But it sure seems to bother others what my opinion of him is.

“Again, whatever your opinion and many of us may share it, it should not preclude you wishing that his soul may rest in peace.”

Ya know josef I’ve never really understood why people say that phrase. Does it really matter if I or anyone for that matter wishes that his soul rest in peace? Whether we are sympathetic or unsympathetic to the man does it really matter? Or is it just politeness? If its just that I’m being impolite then I get what you’re saying. Otherwise it really doesn’t matter if any of us do or don’t wish that his soul rest in peace. And btw I never said that I don’t wish that the man’s soul rest in peace. My point is more about the fact that I just think he was not a good person by any measure and certainly not a person deserving of sympathy.

“And as someone said, this is not a partisan issue.”

I agree and I disagree. Its not a completely partisan issue but I think it is somewhat of an issue in our culture. Part of the problem I see in society is too many people not willing to make judgements on what is unacceptable vs acceptable behavior. I think all that does is lower the standards, the morality, and the coarseness of our society and societal values. And the people who seem most acceptable to not wanting to make judgements on anybody are those on the far left. And that’s where I think it is at least a little bit partisan.

I thought I rectified that.

Saying “Maybe I was a little hasty with that phrase” is not rectifying, it is p*ssying out.

If you can’t own up to when you lie, don’t call others out for it.

josef,

You must have a really short black list. Aint too many cons in Hollywood. And a blacklist of Ronnie’s movies don’t count since no one watches them anyhow.

Wrong. My beliefs lead me to let the judgment come from the one who’s job it is to judge someone’s soul. Regardless to what someone has done on Earth, my religious beliefs dictate that only one can judge. The fact that you still refuse to acknowledge MY Christian upbringing is funny to me. Many of y’all can talk the talk, however your actions show otherwise.
