Bill Kristol offers solution: Yep, you guessed it

War.

Whatever the problem, the ever-eager Bill Kristol believes that other people dying can solve it. The ardent cheerleader of our invasion of Iraq, where more than 4,400 U.S. soldiers died for a cause yet to reveal itself, now champions that same “solution” for Iran, a much more difficult problem. And in a piece in the Weekly Standard, complete with requisite Churchill quote, he and co-author Jamie Fly argue that if President Obama doesn’t do it, Congress should intervene:

Bill Kristol

Bill Kristol

“President Obama says a nuclear Iran is unacceptable. The real and credible threat of force is probably the last hope of persuading the Iranian regime to back down. So: Isn’t it time for the president to ask Congress for an Authorization for Use of Military Force against Iran’s nuclear program?

Instead of running away from it, administration officials could be putting the military option front and center and ensuring it is seen as viable. And if the administration flinches, Congress could consider passing such an authorization anyway. While any commander in chief has the constitutional authority to take urgent action to protect Americans and their interests, such legislation would give weight to the president’s commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. It would strengthen the president’s hand. It would show Tehran that America’s policy of preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon is a credible one. Bipartisan support for such an authorization would remove the issue as much as possible from the turmoil of election year politics. And the authorization could also make clear that the United States would come to Israel’s aid in the event that it decides it needs to take action….

We don’t expect the Obama administration to request an Authorization for Use of Military Force. But Congress can act without such a request. By doing so, it would serve the nation’s interest, and, indeed, the administration’s, if the administration means what it says.

Surely it is time for a concentration of congressional opinion and force capable of lifting our efforts to the level of emergency. The Obama administration may be committed to leading from behind, but Congress can choose to lead from the front.

You better recheck your history, willie. The American people were generally opposed to war in the 1930s, but Roosevelt and the largely Democratic Congress aided European countries opposed to the Axis powers in just about every way they could short of sending troops. Besides, liberals were *running* the US government during WWII, and did a fine job of it, too.

He was a low-life nobody when he was pulled over and acted in a manner that caused police to over-react (to the point where, as then-President GHW Bush said, “it made me sick to my stomach”). He found himself thrust into an international story, and this utterly pedestrian sort of person saw an entire metro area devolve into violence.

Why haven’t we bombed/attacked North Korea? They have Nuclear weapons, delivery capability, a stated desire to take over South Korea, unstable domestic conditions, and irrational leadership.

The answer to that question may be why Iran wants Nuclear power/weapons.

K71 — “Success….. Developing a viable nuclear weapon with an adequate delivery system to launch a nuclear attack from Iran. Also having the ability to sell a viable nuclear weapon to whomever you please. Failure….. none of the above.”

I appreciate your willingness to engage me politely on this topic, K71. Thank you. :)

I agree with your success/failure split. FWIW, I support our current covert initiatives to interfere with Iranian fissionables production (such as the STUXNET and Flame worms), as Iran has not been forthcoming with the international community. There’s a big divide between fuel-enriched uranium and weapons-grade (about 4% versus 90%), but Iran has confused the matter by doing some enrichment to around 20% or so. Twenty’s not nearly enriched enough for weapons, but it *can* be used in the production of medical isotopes, which Iran claims it wants to produce. The thing is, by the time you get much past 20%, you’ve largely gotten to the point where you can produce HEU (Highly Enriched Uranium) for weapons. So IMO, Iran should be more forthcoming about its program. If it really wants to produce power and medical isotopes for peaceful purposes, then show the world. They’ve got nothing to lose, and if they can convince IAEA inspectors of their sincerity, they gain respect and standing in the world. It’s really a win-win all around.

The fact that they won’t do it, or that they balk at it, suggests strongly to me that they *are* doing weps research. To me, that justifies the hacking and data intrusions we’ve been doing (and probably the Israelis too, I’d think). I would expect that the Pentagon has a contingency plan for some sort of strike on Iranian facilities, but IMO Iran could defuse the whole thing by just coming clean.

Hopefully, the Western and Japanese embargo on purchasing Iranian oil will start bearing fruit as the summer goes on. Oil is Iran’s best ‘cash crop’ to the world, and they can’t afford to go without customers. The country needs that money to support programs that keep their restive public from taking to the streets again.

1) You answered your own question. They “HAVE” nuclear weapons.

I can bet you South Korea wishes we had “BEFORE” they had them ……….. and we may someday also.

2) Here’s a second answer. The Korean War was a political one. North Korea to my knowledge has never engaged in a terrorist attack on the U.S.

We are now involved in a religious war (very few political leaders have the guts to admit that) with radical Islam. Radical Islam has attacked the U.S. many times. Iran is led by radical Islamists. We had better PREVENT them from acquiring nuclear weapons whatever it takes.

The Israeli President warns us now that Iran is on the cusp of producing a nuclear weapon. Heaven preserve us. Yet we reporters do not mention that Shimon Peres, as Israeli Prime Minister, said exactly the same thing in 1996. That was 16 years ago. And we do not recall that the current Israeli PM, Benjamin Netanyahu, said in 1992 that Iran would have a nuclear bomb by 1999. That would be 13 years ago. Same old story

We all have hopes that Iran will fail to produce a viable nuclear weapon and that sanctions and diplomacy will work to prevent this. They seem, however, to be engaged in delaying tactics to gain more time to do just that. My question to you and opponents of force to gain our objective, remains the same. What if it is inevitable that Iran will develop a viable nuclear weapon to sell to the highest bidder or to use against Israel and all of our diplomacy has failed? What then?

K71 — “What if it is inevitable that Iran will develop a viable nuclear weapon to sell to the highest bidder or to use against Israel and all of our diplomacy has failed? What then?

Case 1: Iran with a salable nuke

To whom would they sell it? Who can afford one, yet doesn’t already have one? Plus, they’re going to be picky about customers. They’re not going to sell it to Islamists who aren’t Shia, and why bother to sell it to Shia Muslims? The Shiites are already running the show in Iran. If they sell it to AQ, and AQ uses it, we’ll know in a matter of hours where the wep came from (based on fissile analysis of the fallout) — and that means war with both AQ and Iran — plus, much of the world will come in on our side. Unprovoked first use of nukes will bring a STRONG response from the world. So I see no upside for Iran to sell a nuke.

Long story short, Iran would be hard-pressed to find a suitable customer, and once sold, who would use it?

Case 2: Iran has nuclear weapon usable against Israel

Do you really think Israel will let it *get* this far? The reason Israel hasn’t hit them yet is because *they* don’t believe Iran has gotten that far. Israel proved it had the stones to do this when it hit the Iraqi Osirak reactor, and they’ve been screaming for over ten years about the “imminent” danger of Iranian nukes.

It’s pretty clear to me that Israel is trying to get us to do their dirty work, both to save itself the trouble and to protect itself from the inevitable backlash from their Arab neighbors. But IMO, Israel won’t let it *get* to the point you describe.

In short, I don’t see either case ending well for Iran, even if we don’t take any action before we get to the points you described.

It is to me infinitely more egregious that seven thousand millionaires paid nothing in federal income tax in 2011 than countless Americans living in borderline poverty – a couple with two children earning less than $26,400, for example – doing so.

JamVet (my friend)–You have taken numerous Cons here to task for sloganeering, yet you keep repeating the same bumper-sticker statement about the number of millionaires who pay no taxes. The reason those millionaires paid no federal taxes is because they utilized legitimate deductions such as medical expenses, charitable contributions, tax free municipal bond investments and capital gains losses. Unless you are suggesting that we do away with those legitimate deductions, then your bumper sticker slogan holds little meaning.

Per your hypothetical couple with two children making less than $26,400, I would have more sympathy if it weren’t for the fact that my family faced similar circumstances, and we got by by working our butts off. No food stamps, no welfare, no Earned Income Tax Credits involved. In fact, our tax rate was higher in the 1970s than it would be now under the Bush/Obama tax cuts.

They always yell “Allahu Akbar” just before they commit their sick Radical Islamic attacks.

So anyone who’s said “God is great” before performing some important task is a sicko for having done so?

I was taught to say those exact words at the start of a prayer before dinner when I was a kid. So did my siblings, when young. Were we all sickos?

Bruno – the help portion is called a social safety net. Democrats usually want to keep it. Republicans, like with the Ryan plan, want to dismantle it as much as they can.

Finn–If you wish to move past the BS “pushing Granny over the cliff” slogans from the Left, you will understand that the Repub/Con idea of getting us back on firm financial footing as a nation is far more compassionate toward the poor than is the current non-plan of simply throwing money we don’t have at problems which may not really exist.

http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Articles/2012/03/21/Ryans-Plan-Could-Decimate-the-Social-Safety-Net.aspx#page1

From the article:

“Tens of millions of Americans have turned to these safety net programs in recent years as they have attempted to weather one of the worst recessions of modern times. But Ryan contends that Medicaid health services for the poor and other programs are growing at an unsustainable rate and must be curtailed.

Medicaid for example has been growing on average of 9 percent a year – far faster than the overall economy, while federal spending on food stamps has quadrupled over the past ten years.
“The strains that many of these well-intentioned programs have placed on the nation have reached a breaking point,” he says.”

There is no doubt that medical care is becoming unaffordable in this country. Putting everyone on Medicaid is the easy, short-term answer. Addressing the problem in a fundamental way by reducing overall costs is the intelligent, long-term answer. Per the other “safety-net” programs such as WIC and food stamps, I would feel more compassion if I didn’t know so many people personally who abuse those programs. They drive better cars than me, have bigger TVs, all while working far less hours. The long-run answer to poverty is self-reliance, not dependency.

Bruno, why are you obsessed with the details/loopholes/giveaways/subsidies/income redistribution/socialism for the rich?

What part of they paid NOTHING is that hard to get?

NOBODY making tens of thousands of dollars a day deserves a free ride in this country.

It is a travesty that even ONE millionaire can get away with that, much less seven thousand of them…

Maybe because I’m willing to look at the “WHY” behind the bumper sticker slogans. Are you?? You might help your cause a little more by explaining exactly WHICH of the now-legal tax deductions you would do away with. Personally, I’m comfortable with just about all of them because they help ALL Americans, not just the rich.

0311 — “You forgot one thing.”

Nope.

“They always yell “Allahu Akbar” just before they commit their sick Radical Islamic attacks.”

Religion and governance are the same thing to them. However, you said WE are in a religious war. You don’t speak for everyone, and *I’m* certainly not in a religious war with them. So unless you’re prepared to agree with AQ that *Americans* are doing some sort of Christian Crusader thing over there, you’re simply buying into the same kind of pigheaded theocratic ignorance that AQ subscribes to.

“We are in a war against religious fanatical Islamists ………….”

You said that WE are in a religious war. Now you’re moving the goalposts. Your implicit concession has been noted and is appreciated.
