I am reminded that today, June 14, is Flag Day. So, with Father’s Day right around the corner as well, I thought I’d publish the text of a commentary I did a few years ago on NPR about flags and dads to mark the Fourth of July. (The audio is available here, for those who prefer to listen):
“What we needed, Dad said, was a flagpole.
Not one of those flimsy ones that’s just stuck on the side of the house with their puny little American flag hanging from it. What we needed was a real flagpole, a flagpole tall enough to put a real American flag rippling in the breeze where it belonged, where you had to look up at the sky to see it. And we needed to put that new flagpole right there in the middle of the yard.
So one weekend in the summer of 1967, we brought out the shovels, the concrete, the gravel. Dad and a couple of his buddies dug a deep hole and in a few hours, they had planted themselves a tall flagpole. The next morning, Dad’s color guard — me and my little brother, Alan — reported for instructions:
Raise the flag every morning. Take it down every evening. Fold it in the officially prescribed manner, and never ever allow it to touch the ground. Dad, you see, was a sergeant in the Air Force and he made sure we did it right.
We Americans love our flag. We fly it everywhere from courthouses and churches to car dealerships. We pledge allegiance to it. We sing songs about it. And this year, like every year, politicians are trying to make it a crime to burn the flag.
Personally, I burned a flag or two in my time – not in protest, though. Dad would disown me if I have ever pulled anything like that. But, you see, Dad was a stickler about retiring flags that had faded or torn. And he taught us it would be the height of disrespect to just toss an old flag in the garbage.
Instead, when Old Glory grew too worn to stay in service, we would set it afire in a solemn little backyard ceremony, then dispose of the ashes. Even today, I’m offended every time I see a tattered flag still flying. That kind of desecration, done out of apathy and neglect, bugs me a lot more than flag burning as an act of protest. Flag burners understand its real power as a symbol. Whatever you think about their judgment, they care enough to express their opinion. And apathy and neglect are far greater threats to our freedom than passion.
A couple of years ago, I happened to be in the area of our old house and I drove by to see it. A lot had changed in the neighborhood. But if you can pardon the paraphrase, the visit gave proof to my eyes that our flagpole was still there. I can’t say I was surprised. Dad always built things that last.”

Great story.
Practical question–as a Boy Scout, I was taught to never leave it out in the rain (and so I never leave mine out, unattended, if I think it might shower). How’d your father feel about raising the flag when rain was forecast? Or, was there always someone home to take it down if it did rain, so this was a moot point?
(Oh, and I get after my kid as well if she ever allows the flag to touch the ground.)

Twenty five years ago a neighbor went in a nursing home and the son was eager to clean all her packrat trash out of the hose so he could quickly sell it. The whole front yard was piled high with trash he expected the city to pick up. Sitting in the middle of the mess was old glory-48stars. I salvaged it and she proudly is displayed on our front porch every holiday. One’s man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

I remember how disgusted I was at the many filthy and tattered flags on cars a year after 9/11. People who were caught up in the patriotic fervor of post 9/11 who forgot what that flag was all about. It almost made me appreciate the magnetic flags that at least did not shred.

Speaking of corporate-sponsored apathy of the flag…
I was in a hotel in Augusta for Hugo in ‘89. Actually, it was more of a motel, with every door opening onto the parking lot and (or course) large glass windows in each room. Next door was a car dealership flying a HUGE flag. At night. During a strong hurricane. 2 am and it sounded like a train was rumbling through my room.
By morning, all that was left of the flag were 3 stripes, still blowing in the breeze.

To diverge just a hair–one of the more shocking things to me when I moved Down Here from the Northeast was that whole subdivision culture.
I’d always lived in neighborhoods that had been built house by house, (or apartment building by apartment building) that didn’t have those kinds of individual restrictions, where people could put up a flagpole or a cornfield or whatnot if they wanted to, and found it somewhat comical that a supposedly rugged-individualistic / proudly-conservative region allowed itself to be told what to do like that.
I mean, God forbid you don’t sod your front lawn Just So, and don’t be thinking about leveraging the full-sun coverage to grow something you can actually *eat*, where people can see it!

When I was in the Navy and my ship was in port, I always liked the sunset flag ceremony. Standing on the fantail, at attention and saluting the lowering of the ensign while the bos’un’s pipe trilled. Always moved me.
I also took part in a decommissioning ceremony one time where the Stars and Stripes was lowered from the flagstaff for the last time. That was special too. An old warrior retired from the fleet to be broken up after serving for so many faithful years and countless crews aboard her. It was sad, in a way…not many ships become museums, you know, but it is the way of things.
I say this because maybe on Flag Day, we should remember those Veterans who are on the beach needing help and trying to stay away from their own personal breaking yard. Too many Vets need help…our help.

Great read!
We are in an era of veterans from World Wars dying of old age. The last man turns the lights out stuff. Nature took care of what the Germans and Japanese couldn’t as proud good American soldiers die off.
Some of these men were only boys when they were sent to combat, 18 years old. They were rightfully so scared and all they had were each other. You see them now very old men, sitting in metal chairs at services, having to be helped to and from. The world has changed so much since they owned it. I’m sure some of that fear is back they felt in those wars. Now they don’t even have each other, it must be lonely. But they and we still have that flag, and I hope what it stands for. I pray that flag someday unites us all like those soldiers were years ago. We are all we got and on most days that and God is all we need.

–
Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!
Long has it waved on high,
And many an eye has danced to see
That banner in the sky;
Beneath it rung the battle shout,
And burst the cannon’s roar;–
The meteor of the ocean air
Shall sweep the clouds no more!
Her deck, once red with heroes’ blood,
Where knelt the vanquished foe,
When winds were hurrying o’er the flood
And waves were white below,
No more shall feel the victor’s tread,
Or know the conquered knee;–
The harpies of the shore shall pluck
The eagle of the sea!
Oh, better that her shattered hulk
Should sink beneath the wave;
Her thunders shook the mighty deep,
And there should be her grave;
Nail to the mast her holy flag,
Set every threadbare sail,
And give her to the God of storms,–
The lightning of the gale!

Well, they’re certainly not exclusive to the South. It’s more of a newer-development kind of thing. I’m sure there are plenty of similarly restrictive housing developments in the NYC tri-state region; it’s just that out of the housing stock to choose from, your odds are greater that you’ll wind up in a home that’s NOT part of this world, the closer to the city you get.

Jay, After reading your article I was touched and had a Rockwell moment. Those type of stories are ones that can eassily be found anywhere in Pennsylvania. However, in the deep south Flags have an altogether different feeling and meaning. Growing up here in Atlanta, the only Flag I remember seeing the most was one that brought out the most distatseful feelings of hate, fear and intimidation.
The Confederate Flag was and still is one of most hateful symbols of the American landscape. You can still see it flying around the metro area but nowhere near the numbers it use to be. I wished we all could have shared in such an experience as you. However, in the South the American Flag is not always as cherished as it should be. Even today many of the South’s state capitals still fly this symbol of Hate proudly. In time, it will eventually change and they will and can be only found in Musems for historical purposes as where they should be. However, this change will come not fast enough for me and many who know the real significance of flying such a symbol of Hate.

Bernie – the Confederate Flag has unfortunately been coopted as a symbol of Hate by folks who DO NOT understand its heritage – the views of the segregationist southern legislatures and hate groups do not speak for me & numerous other Southerners who have a different perspective on that symbol. As recently as 25 years ago it was still a symbol of regional pride – it was a symbol of those who were willing to fight & die for their beliefs – that belief that this was a Voluntary union and that some might wish to withdraw from it. The common perception that the War Between the States was over Slavery is another revisionist interpolation of the actual history – but understandable since those who win the wars write the history. That flag – the Stars & Bars – the Confederate Battle Flag – to me means that my Southern ancestors were willing to fight & die for their beliefs – even when they had no weapons, clothing, or food to fight with. I fly mine with pride – right below my Stars & Stripes – it is a symbol of my heritage & honorable ancestors – NOT a symbol of Hate. Too bad that folks cannot sit down to exchange/share viewpoints because all is sometimes not necessarily as it seems.

In defense of all the HOA’s that end up in the news, flagpoles often violate safety clauses or other junk that was originally intended to stop people from building ski jumps on their roofs or whatever. I have framed on one wall of my office a poster entitled Tattered Banners published by the Alabama Dept of Archives and History. It depicts the 25 Confederate Battle flags of 25 Alabama units and the day of the flag’s capture and where it was taken. One of the most interesting of the lot is the flag of the 28th Alabama infantry. It is a white flag with a sunburst as it’s main character. It was made from the wedding dress of the unit’s commanding officer and was captured at Orchard Knob, the Battle of Chattanooga on November 23, 1863.

http://www.gwu.edu/~action/2004/dnc0203/dean022103spt.html
I post this not to endorse his framing of “Repubs bad Dems good” (although longtime listeners know those would reflect my personal leamings) but rather to ask folks, as Josef had done, to see a bigger picture, beyond the obvious symbolism, as Dean was in his somewhat inartful way, trying to do.
Here’s the passage for which he drew so much flack, even though, apparently, the audience included many African-Americans who cheered what he had said. Emphasis mine.
———–
Let me tell you something else I’m going to do.
One of the things I thought was terrific about Bill Clinton was that when he became president in 1992 he said that his Cabinet would look like the rest of America. And he did it; and he did it. [applause].
I want all of our institutions of higher learning–our law schools, our medical schools, our best universities–to look like the rest of America, and I thought [applause], I thought that one of the most dispicable moments of this president’s administration was three weeks ago when on national primetime television he used the word quota seven times. The University of Michigan does not now have quotas; it has never had quotas. Quotas is a race-loaded word, designed to appeal to people’s fears of losing their jobs. [cheers, applause].
I intend to talk about race during this election in the South, because the Republicans have been talking about it since 1968 in order to divide us, and I’m going to bring us together, because you know what, you know what? White folks in the South who drive pick ups with Confederate flag decals on the back ought to be voting with us and not them because their kids don’t have health insurance and their kids need better schools too. [cheers, applause].

Thanks Jay, apporpriate and moving. Brings back memories. The elementary school I attended chose three students each week to raise and lower our flags. It was an honor to be part of that ceremony, particularly for me as my brother was then in the Pacific defending our nation. We as with many families at that time had a blue star hanging in our window at home honoring my brother and a flag was mounted on our house. My job at home was to place that flag before I went to school
and take it down each evening. Thanks again Jay.

Anytime I see the flying of the Confederate Flag in front of a businesses, services or residences, I cringe and remember what this flag truly means and not from any place of historical pride or heritage. I do not patronize those businesses and encourage everyone I know and business associates to avoid such places, for they are places that do not truly believe in what this country stands for.

Excellent little commentary, IMAM, a tip of the hat to you. I trust those who like to sling mud at your loyalties to the republic will take note and remember this.
Today and here are probably not the best time and best place to be bringing up the Late Misunderstanding, so I will refrain from passing my own comments as a not completely reconstructed citizen of the unified republic.
As Unmentionable, like Jay, a military brat says, “it is the flag of my nation and a symbol of who we are, good and bad. Of course there are those times when I look at it, I am reminded of what it means, historically, to be an Indian in America. But I am also reminded that I am an American and that is my flag, too.”
So, on a day such as today, let’s contemplate, not our failures as a nation, but our triumphs.

When the Iraq War Dead started being publicized in the early 2000’s, my Dad, a WW II Veteran, lowered his flag to half-mast to mourn our losses…Since we continued to have losses for the next 7 or 8 years, he continued to keep his flag at half-mast until he passed away at 86 years old. He was a Veteran, but thought that War, in general, was STUPID and a HUGE WASTE.

Romney Plan for Pre-Existing Conditions Draws Dem Fire
Mitt Romney this week has been highlighting his opposition to Obamacare, telling voters and donors of his eagerness to see the U.S. Supreme Court strike the law down and a willingness to do the deed from the White House if the court does not.
“You know, regardless of what they do, it’s going to be up to the next president to either repeal and replace Obamacare or to replace Obamacare,” Romney told a crowd in Orlando on Tuesday.
But it’s Romney’s unabashed public opposition to one of the law’s most popular provisions – a ban on health insurance company discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions – that is once again stirring the political pot.
The former governor said this week, reiterating a position he’s articulated in the past, that only Americans who have had constant, uninterrupted insurance coverage should be guaranteed access to a health plan, regardless of any pre-existing conditions.

The Confederate flag has different meanings to different people. To ignore those who view it differently than you do is narrow minded. And that applies to both sides. But I won’t display it because of those who are intimidated by it and I don’t want to be thought of as someone who hates. As Lewis Grizzard said (paraphrased), the confederate flag does represent the heritage of the south but the good people of the south allowed it to be used as a symbol of hate and did not speak up when that happened. And so it now bears that stain.

Just for the heck of it, and since this thread is about common bonds I’m going to try to put this diplomatically, and directly, to Joseph. And yes, I’ve read the admonitions to ignore the man (if he is a grown man, I’m assuming he is.) Here goes.
Joseph, could you at least consider the possibility that what you experience in your circle of acquaintances is not necessarily representative of the entire nation? Could you think about how birds of a feather tend to small-flock together, and that there might be flag retirement ceremonies across the country where self-identifying liberals actually outnumber conservatives?
And if what you’re intimating at its core is true—that more self-identifying conservatives than liberals are in our armed forces—did you ever think about any historical reasons for that, beyond some character defect or cowardice in the former group?
Did it ever occur that America’s armed forces themselves haven’t always welcomed all Americans as equals in their ranks? Have you forgotten the trials and tribulations to racially integrate the forces in the middle of the last century, to say nothing of the decades-long debate over gays serving openly? Many want to serve their country; many, undoubtedly, have found it difficult to square that with an organization that openly discriminated in a way that was literally illegal in some states of this nation.
I don’t expect you to do a 180 on your preconceived notions about liberal patriotism; I won’t even be surprised if you snap back by informing me that “liberal patriotism” is an oxymoron. I’ve heard it all, plenty of times already, so go ahead if that is your wont.
I just ask that you consider, on this Flag Day, re-evaluating what sounds to me like an unexamined slice of your own life.

Joseph, could you at least consider the possibility that what you experience in your circle of acquaintances is not necessarily representative of the entire nation?
Its certainly representative of the great state of Georgia….
And if what you’re intimating at its core is true—that more self-identifying conservatives than liberals are in our armed forces—did you ever think about any historical reasons for that, beyond some character defect or cowardice in the former group?
I think you know there’s more Conservatives than liberals in the armed forces. I’ve honestly never met a vet that wasn’t Conservative. Remember libs make up only 20% of the electorate according to recent pools…

“Liberals are certainly not as patriotic as Conservative Americans”.
Joseph,
I’m a Democrat. Served in the Army from Nixon through Clinton. I always thought I supported the military regardless of which party was in power and consider myself patriotic. How many veterans are Liberals or Conservatives today can be argued, but I’d bet there is a mix. Was Cheney, Gingrich, etal any more patriotic than the those Liberals? There’s a lot of soldiers, dead and alive, that carried their water because they had “more important” things to do. Letting someone else serve and put it all on the line in your place is what I call unpatriotic.
In my opinion, real disrespect is those that could have served, didn’t serve, and wrap themselves in the flag. Bottom line is they didn’t care enough about the country or their countrymen to pitch in and help out. All they need to do is look in the mirror and ask themselves “Where was I when my country needed me?”

A combination of the worsening debt crisis in Europe and uncertainty over whether Congress will manage to stave off the scheduled expiration of various lower tax rates at year-end, dubbed the “fiscal cliff,” is souring business and consumer confidence. Job growth has slowed in the past four months, with employers adding the fewest jobs in a year in May.

josef: “The Affair” was the backstory after something like 15 novels with the character. It was the second one of his that I read, so now that I know how he got started, I’m starting over at the beginning to see where each novel takes Harry. I started with Gone Tomorrow and that one just kept me rapidly moving from chapter to chapter. Starts with a woman on a NYC subway train checking off most of the points in an Israeli Army checklist for someone who is a suicide bomber. And Harry decides he should intervene….
I’ve decided I can’t wait for retirement to get to all these books I want to read. I just set aside an hour or two a night for it. Usually better than TV.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – About two-thirds of Americans believe Republican former U.S. President George W. Bush is responsible for the nation’s struggling economy, with a smaller percentage blaming Democratic President Barack Obama, a Gallup poll showed on Thursday.
About 68 percent of the more than 1,000 adults surveyed nationwide said Bush, who left office in January 2009, deserves a “moderate amount” or a “great deal” of the blame for the U.S. economic woes compared to 52 percent who pointed to his successor Obama, the poll found.
