Billionaire Adelson: ‘Limitless’ $$$ for Romney

From Forbes:

“Forbes has confirmed that billionaire Sheldon Adelson, along with his wife Miriam, has donated $10 million to the leading Super PAC supporting presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney -– and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. A well-placed source in the Adelson camp with direct knowledge of the casino billionaire’s thinking says that further donations will be “limitless.”

Adelson, who has built Las Vegas Sands into an global casino empire, will do “whatever it takes” to defeat Obama, this source says. And given that Adelson is worth $24.9 billion –- and told Forbes in a recent rare interview about his political giving that he had been willing to donate as much as $100 million to his initial presidential preference, Newt Gingrich –- that “limitless” description telegraphs potential nine-digit support of Romney.”

This is the world wrought by the naivete and partisanship of the Roberts court.

Paul,

What you call hyperbole I call common sense. For example do you honestly believe that the average American has a clue as to how the business or the economy work. Or better yet that the average American knows more about the economy than say an enormously successful businessman like Adelson? If anyone believes that I’ll sell them my multi-million dollar beachfront condo in Omaha for a paltry 100k.

JHM: Doom — “For example he should accuse Romney of knowing a helluva lot more about the economy and business for starters. Then he should accuse Romney of having eminently more executive experience than Obama. Then he should accuse Romney of being vastly more competent for the job of potus than himself. Then he should accuse Romney as Clinton did of having a “sterling” business career- something O completely lacked. And last he should accuse Romney of having zero experience as an all important community organizer.”

For a salesman, you sure are pitching a lousy advertising campaign.

Oh, I know, he should talk about Soros any time he mentions campaign donation problems, or should talk about Hollywood any time he mentions supporters of Romney in a negative light. Or something. Yeah, that’ll work. He’ll surely get conservatives to vote for him if he just starts saying bad things about himself and good things about the opposition!

Doubling down on ‘imminent collapse”?

No need to, really. It’s enough to make the case the economy will continue to struggle and Republican policies would speed the recovery.

‘cept I haven’t figured out how Republicans can do that without intervening in the market, telling entities what they can and can’t do, or picking winners and losers.

Some of our posters here — on both sides — diss pro athletes and Hollywood actors for not actually *producing* anything for the economy. By that standard, Adelson doesn’t either, no matter how much he happens to be worth.

In Wisconsin Walker spent 88% of the money to get 53% of the vote.
Since Obama is a much better speaker than Romney, I think Romney will need and advantage like that to offset his problems connecting with people. While it looks like he’ll have a lead, I don’t think it will be 88-12.
Also, the noise at Obama speeches reminds me of Nixon. Except Nixon tried to be a little more clever and hide his involvement. I think Romney’s campaign team may be out of control. He probably has a couple young Roger Ailes in there. Romney may think these are pranks, but they tend to lead to bigger trouble, as Nixon found out.

Remember, you can still win the popular vote for presidency and still loose the so called general election. ‘The Electorial College’. Who are these people? It must be people like billionaire Sheldon Weldon of Nevada. Look at who controls the GOP idealogy, a guy named Grover Norquist hope the last is spelled correctly. He commands them including Mitt Romney to sign ‘A No Tax’ pledge. How stupid can you be and you want to be president of this country. Mr. Romney cannot even make up his mind on tax or no tax. I have this great idea, the nation should just get rid of all taxations and see what happens. Call it donations what ever you can afford to the national and local governments. Imagine with over 270 military installations to support. WAKE UP AMERICA……………Tea Party folks be realistic and start a ligit new party and not be a soragate party to the senseless GOP fools. Joe Mama,

I see that you are downplaying Adelson’s success with the statements that he doesn’t produce anything or that he’s just a casino owner. Well he actually does produce something- a pleasurable gaming and hotel experience that apparently a lot of people enjoy. And Vegas is pretty competitive with quite a few casinos. Attorneys, insurance agents, heating and air service people, landscapers, retail sales clerks, IT people, there’s a lot of people that don’t “produce” anything tangible. They do however provide a service or important advice or an enjoyable experience. Disney’s amusement park doesn’t produce any tangible goods other than the concessions but people sure as hell love it.

Whatever you or I or anyone else thinks of the man he is enormously successful. And that’s saying something whether you start a company that sells mop handles or a gaming company or whatever. And I don’t think his business acumen or knowledge of the economy can be discounted given that success.

I haven’t previously expressed any upset with Mr. Adelson. I merely pointed out to Doom that Adelson’s ‘business acumen’ is mostly based around getting tourists to play blackjack and slots, which is shooting fish in a barrel. Throw up a hotel and put in a couple of buffets, and you’re in business.

FWIW, my personal view is that either corporations and groups should be completely and utterly PROHIBITED from all cost-based political activity and spending (as they are not persons and therefore have no Constitutional First Amendment rights), or that they should be constrained to the same limits as individuals.

However, I would impose a soft-money donation limit equal to the hard-money donation limit per election cycle. But my preference would be to prohibit all corporations and groups from ANY political activity or spending entirely. Corporations and groups could certainly mount protests, distribute signs, buttons, shirts, etc., but IMO should not be permitted to access advertising or promotions of any sort.

My bottom line — if you don’t have the right to vote, then you shouldn’t have the right to engage in any political activity whatsoever.

Look up Brian Darling of the HEritage Foundation

He is a huge voter fraud advocate….. He went on tv and couldn’t name ONE case

hahahahahah

Appearing on MSNBC on Monday morning, Heritage Foundation senior fellow Brian Darling tried to advocate on behalf of Republicans’ efforts in several to purge allegedly fraudulent voters from the rolls ahead of the 2012 presidential election.

However, under questioning Darling was unable to cite a single verified instance of actual voter fraud, leading host Chuck Todd to declare that he was “actually proving” Democrats’ contention that the Republican Party’s actions are unnecessary.

“Where is this voter fraud?” Todd asked. “I mean, it’s not this giant…”

“We’ve had recent examples,” Darling said. “…We just had a Michigan Congressman resign… not run for reelection, because… his campaign gathered signatures that couldn’t be validated.”

Todd pointed out that petition gathering is much different from actually voting in a public election. “I mean, that’s a different law there,” he said.

“Yeah, but it’s very hard to catch voter fraud,” Darling replied. “Look at what James O’Keefe did. He walked into D.C., he didn’t have any ID…”

“Did he vote?” Todd asked.

“No, he didn’t vote,” Darling responded. “He didn’t vote, but he asked for a ballot and they were gonna give it to him.”

“Right, but you’re actually proving the point here,” Todd said. “That the fraud didn’t take place because they prevented it.”

Headline (ABC): “White House Forgets to Pay Father’s Day Lunch Tab”

The above is the kind goofy headline that should not have ever been printed. For one thing, presidents don’t carry cash around ……….. they never need it. Some staffer forgot to pick that up
on his behalf.

BIG DEAL !

Actually, yes it is. It’s absolutely my business as an American how elections are run.

So What if Mr Adelson exercises his right to contribute to the candidate of his choice! The people need to remember that in the last election, Mr Obama closed his books and the Arabs and the Chinese bought his election for him! His campaign has never filed disclosures because he opted out of the public funding program as he had promised Senator McCain! I will be writing a check to Governor Romney’s campaign as we have seen what a disaster electing an inexperienced community organizer to our country’s highest office was! My entire family and friends will be voting for HOPE and CHANGE in November! Yes we can! By the way saw a great bumper sticker which said “Obama, Jimmy Carter’s second term!”

He has the power of veto too. And if you think backroom dealing doesn’t go on you’re living in a fantasy world.

They both suck,

I have to admit Joe’s response was pretty funny. But in the end his whining and Jay’s whining and anyone else whining about the money that Adelson or anyone else spends is just that- whining. Boo hoo for them.

“Community organizing is soooo much more relevant to the job of being president.”
______________________________________________________________________

Lets explore that option instead of dismissing it out of hand in a knee jerk conservative fashion ( http://psp.sagepub.com/content/38/6/808 ).

What does “community organizing” entail? 1) Identifying perceived problems in a community by listening to the members of the community. Oooooh! I would hate for a President to listen to the majority of U.S citizens. Just let a few billionaires tell you what is needed. 2) Work with the community to identify possible solutions to the problems. Horrible! Better just to suggest more tax cuts for the rich and forget about it, right? 3) Assist the community to identify organizational, financial, political, and manpower resources to implement the desired solutions. But, but, but, that might cause the few and powerful to have upset tummies at the thought they won’t be able to so easily exploit others less fortunate than themselves for financial gain!

Hmmm, maybe having a community organizer as President isn’t so bad.

They BOTH Suck:

“The Supreme Court answered this question in 2008 when it upheld Indiana’s voter ID law. “Flagrant examples of such fraud … have been documented throughout this Nation’s history by respected historians and journalists,” the court said, “[and] not only is the risk of voter fraud real but that it could affect the outcome of a close election.”

Same question to you as to the person who raised the same point earlier:

Has Soros, or any Democrat, said they’d donate anywhere near to $100 million to defeat Romney?

And this is exactly why you should be in the same boat with me on this.

Ban groups and corporations from all political activity and contributions.

Place a HARD limit (let’s say $2,500) on both hard and soft money that individuals can contribute per election cycle (2 years).

Bring elections back to what they’re supposed to be about; candidates persading the voting public and not candidates chasing money and producing slick ads.

They BOTH suck

TD

The law is the law. Anyone can contribute what they want. With that said, I don’t care if it is Soros, Koch Bros. , trial lawyers etc……. These people are not giving all that money for the love of the USA.

Good for them, but I do not personally think it is a positive thing for America

I’ve called out Obama numerous times about being a hypocrite on Super Pacs. Asked Jay to write a column. He has given me some comments, but hasn’t felt that it was worthy of a column

Rejected. I’ll repeat it again so that even you can understand. As long as its legal and the appropriate 501c filings or whatever paperwork and compliance is maintained its none of your damn business how much the man contributes. He can contribute whatever the hell he wants to as long as its compliant with the law. And there aint a damn thing you can do about it- cept whine. And we know how good you guys are at that.

As usual, your reading comprehension skills are teh FAIL.

I’m opposed to ALL groups and corporations making political contributions. That would include unions, Doom.

I’m also opposed to ALL wealthy people making outsized political contributions. That would include George Soros and the Hollywood elites with their $40K a plate fundraisers.
