Hillary: Russia arming Syria with attack ‘copters

One would assume that a player of Hillary Clinton’s experience would not make such a public charge unless she had considerable confidence that it was true and that she was prepared for the blowback it might create.

That said, from the New York Times:

“The Syria conflict fell deeper into crisis Tuesday as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton publicly accused Russia of supplying attack helicopters to the Syrian government.

Her accusation came as international cease-fire monitors in Syria aborted a fact-finding trip after they came under assault by an angry mob and gunfire, and the top United Nations peacekeeping official said Syria was already in a state of civil war.

Those developments — coupled with a newly released United Nations report that accused the Syrian military of using Syrians as young as 8 as human shields for troops — overshadowed fresh diplomatic efforts by Kofi Annan, the special envoy to Syria, to advance a peace plan that that has basically been ignored since it was put into effect two months ago….

Russia has repeatedly denied sending any armaments to Mr. Assad that could be used to crush the uprising against him. But Mrs. Clinton said the United States was “concerned about the latest information we have that there are attack helicopters on their way from Russia to Syria.” The shipments, she warned, “would escalate the conflict quite dramatically.” “

The Russians have been the primary obstacle to a more aggressive U.N.-led effort to remove the Syrian leadership. However, it is one thing to serve as diplomatic cover for the mass killings being carried out in Syria; it is another to provide the Syrian government with the weapons needed to conduct such massacres on an even larger scale.

And of course, all such things in the Middle East are not merely connected but hopelessly intertwined. Russian cooperation in the U.N. and elsewhere is essential in putting pressure on Iran to abandon its nuclear program. Iran and Syria are allies in supporting Hezbollah in Lebanon. And while the Syrian regime has been brutal in attempting to suppress the uprising of its own people, those likely to take power should the current Assad dictatorship topple are likely to be brutal in turn to Syria’s Christian and Alawite minorities.

Some problems can at best be managed, not solved, and at the moment Syria is probably the best example of such a situation.

Josef, but Hezbollah may have lost it’s supply route with Damascus in turmoil. Not a good idea to start a fight without supply routes.

And did you see this about Hamas?

Furthermore, the revolt in Syria has driven a wedge between Hamas and Iran that did not previously exist. The two have experienced a severe falling out over Hamas’ desertion of its Damascus headquarters and its decision not to support Assad. As punishment for Hamas’ turn against Tehran’s ally in Damascus, Iran has significantly (if not entirely) cut funding and arms supplies to Gaza. This reprimand, while intended to rein in Hamas, has actually had the opposite effect of reducing Hamas’ willingness to carry out Iran’s wishes. Such a state of affairs makes it less likely that Hamas would carry out Iran’s agenda in the event of war, as doing so would trigger an overwhelming Israeli retaliation in Gaza.

It is in this context that Hamas’ leader Ismail Haniyeh recently stated that the group would likely stay on the sidelines in the event of an Iran-Israeli conflagration, announcing that Iran “did not ask anything of us” and “is not in need of us.”

Jay, I agree with you about Gen.Powell. His actions were shameful and disgusting on all levels. I suspect the annals of history will judge him harshly. More harshly than anyone else in the Bush Administration, for his failure to properly perform his duties as sworn. Instead of acting as the Secretary of State for the American People.
Gen. Powell, acted as a military soldier and followed orders, knowingly that he and the American People and the entire world were being misled intentionally for varied known and unknown reasons. He did not have to express an opinion, however he had a duty to resign. To resign with complete SILENCE would have brought that IRAQ train to a screeching HALT. But being the good soldier that he was…… he complied willingly and without descent. His compliance sealed his fate as a co-conspirator in the longest War in American History. So Many of our kids,Moms, Dads, boyfriends, girlfriends and others have paid the ultimate price for his failure.
I try not to think of the injuries sustained, because its heartbreaking to the core.

We owe a great debt of gratitude for all who have sacrificed and especially their families and children left behind, for allowing such dastardly plans gone awry without the full Wisdom and Understanding of such a decision.

It’s hard to say. The Syrian Diaspora has always been highly respected for their business savvy and cultured way of life. They sent that back home. I think that what happened is that Assad played that to the hilt in his PR image to the West, meanwhile cracking down on calls for opening up. He played off one faction against another. It turns out that the factions have the names of the different sects and all “sides” have brought this into the arena. These conflicts were always there just beneath the surface, but muted in a secular and pluralistic society. I think that the fundie aspect is a relatively new development. It remains to be seen if the secular element CAN come out on top in the squabble for what’s coming in.

As retired General Wesley Clark writes in “Winning Modern Wars,” US foreign policy over the last 20 years has focused on regime change in seven countries: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Somalia and Sudan. All seven, except Syria, are oil rich countries targeted owing to their refusal to privatize their oil resources for the benefit of Anglo American oil companies. Oil-poor Syria is a target because of its strategic alliance with oil-rich Iran. Please note that this policy has remained consistent whether Republicans or Democrats control Congress and the White House.

Vladimir Putin and his henchmen remind me of Brezhnev and his doctrine:

From Wiki –

In practice, the policy meant that limited independence of communist parties was allowed. However, no country would be allowed to leave the Warsaw Pact, disturb a nation’s communist party’s monopoly on power, or in any way compromise the cohesiveness of the Eastern bloc. Implicit in this doctrine was that the leadership of the Soviet Union reserved, for itself, the right to define “socialism” and “capitalism”. Following the announcement of the Brezhnev Doctrine, numerous treaties were signed between the Soviet Union and its satellite states to reassert these points and to further ensure inter-state cooperation. The principles of the doctrine were so broad that the Soviets even used it to justify their military intervention in the non-Warsaw Pact nation of Afghanistan in 1979. The Brezhnev Doctrine stayed in effect until it was finally ended with the Soviet non-invasion of Poland during the 1980-1981 crisis[1] and later refusal of Mikhail Gorbachev to use military force when Poland held free elections in 1989 and Solidarity defeated the Communist Party.[2] It was superseded by the facetiously named Sinatra Doctrine in 1989.

RUSSIA CHALLENGES US-NATO: Russia prepares army for Syrian deployment

Given the worsening crisis in Syria, the Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper reported that the Russian army is apparently being prepared for a mission in Syria. Citing anonymous sources in the military leadership, the newspaper said that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the general staff to work out a plan for military operations outside Russia, including in Syria.

The units being prepared for an intervention are the 76th Division of airborne forces (an especially experienced unit of the Russian army), the 15th Army Division, as well as special forces from a brigade of the Black Sea fleet, which has a base in the Syrian port of Tartus.

The details of the operational plan are being prepared by the working parties of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, to which most of the post-Soviet states belong, as well as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, to which China and Russia belong.

According to the newspaper report, deployment depends on the decision of the Russian government and the UN. However, the plans also foresee that the troops might intervene without UN approval. The Russian government has so far not confirmed the report.

On Monday last week, three Russian warships were sighted off the Syrian coast. An anonymous source from the Russian government told the Iranian newspaper Tehran Times that Moscow wants to show NATO that it will not allow any military operation against Damascus under the guise of a humanitarian mission.

Well, there you have it. The “Israeli Lake” (the Mediterranean) ends at Syria. Either that or World War III. Take your pick.

Info Troll,

If you don’t want American right-wing zealots (Talibaptists) to be compared to the Taliban, then tell GRTL and those arson-tactic thugs to climb out from under the skirts of free American women and mind their own G**D*** business for a change.

You’re welcome.

They BOTH suck

“One would assume that a player of Hillary Clinton’s experience would not make such a public charge unless she had considerable confidence that it was true and that she was prepared for the blowback it might create.”

Give us a break Jay. This is the same idiotic woman who accused the republicans of a massive witch hunt when allegations first started coming out about her scum-bag husband & Monica.

Information,
So where do you draw the line? I’ve heard Obama called everything from Hitler to Stalin and all points in between on this blog. To me all the hyperbole sucks so I try not to participate. People do it to bait others, for attention seeking or in a vain attempt to bolster a weak argument.

getalife’s comment at 8:47pm is beyond offensive.

For getalife to compare the Taliban to conservatives in America goes right into the sewer of leftist thinking and public commentary.

getalife doesn’t seem to have a life other than ajc blogs.

Mr or Ms getalife – do you wear black socks with sandals and a tye-die wifebeater shirt?

I’ll bet the shelter gives you free stuff that i throw away every month.

Obama and his minions are too busy leaking top military secrets for political ends to be effective in actually managing the very serious situations in Syria or in North Korea. Obama and his 30 different “top Obama administration officials”have much to answer for.
