For U.S., warmest spring and year on record … by a lot
The evidence continues to mount; the willful blindness to its consequences continues to keep pace.
From the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s newly released national climate overview:
“The national temperature of 57.1 degrees F during spring was 5.2 degrees F above the long-term average, besting the previous warmest spring of 1910 by 2.0 degrees F.
This marked the largest temperature departure from average of any season on record for the contiguous United States. The spring of 2012 was the culmination of the warmest March, third warmest April, and second warmest May. This marks the first time that all three months during the spring season ranked among the ten warmest, since records began in 1895
January-May was the warmest such period on record for the contiguous United States, with an average temperature of 49.2 degrees F, 5.0 degrees F above the long-term average….
The June 2011-May 2012 period was the warmest 12-month period of any 12 months on record for the contiguous United States. The nationally-averaged temperature of 56.0 degrees F was 3.2 degrees F above the long-term average, surpassing the previous record, set last month (May 2011-April 2012), by 0.4 degrees F. The 12-month period encapsulated the second warmest summer, fourth warmest winter, and the warmest spring on record. Every state across the contiguous U.S. had warmer than average temperatures for the period, except Washington, which was near normal.”
It’s not just the fact that new temperature records are being broken; what’s astonishing is the amount by which records are now being broken. For example, the chart below includes annual January-May temperature data for Atlanta going back all the way to 1929. You can see the normal range of temperatures, and you can also that the deep red line — representing the record year of 2012 — is far outside the norm.
More than 30 years ago, when scientists first began to warn us that this would happen, skepticism might have been understandable. However, that skepticism should be much harder to sustain given the fact that ever since then, climate events have been playing out pretty much as they predicted.
But hey, I guess it really isn’t happening if we refuse to see it, right?

Every single scientific association on the planet has issued a statement confirming that the climate is warming and that mankind is a significant contributor to the trend. Among active climatologists, 97 percent agree with both those statements. Your claim that “an equal number of eminent men of science” dispute the theory is true only of one small subgroup of scientists, petroleum geologists, who by definition have no training or expertise in atmospheric or climate science and who also have a very strong cultural and economic cause to believe as they do.

Did the article mention or put a link to the WORLDWIDE data? Surely, you aren’t just going by what happens in the continental U.S. If the climate change is happening, it would not just be localized to the U.S.
Secondly, so what if the temps rise a couple of degrees. I didn’t hear many people complaning in March and April when it was so nice this spring.
Thirdly, Jay, do you feel the same passion about the OVERWHELMING evidence that the U.S. is heading toward financial ruin and that major changes need to be made to Medicaid, Medicare, and S.S.? We have 100% evidence that we are heading their, yet, the Dems want to get all up in arms about “tax breaks for Big Oil and millionaires and billionaires” which would hardly make a dent. We would still be WAY over budget

Ugh – I am not a global warming denier by any means, but a warm spring in 2012 does not at all indicate anything to do with global warming! Global warming is a very, very slow trend that is taking place over a long period of time. The climate is always variable – global warming doesn’t have anything to do with that.

Marine Sgt. Maj. Bryan Battaglia, the senior enlisted adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently issued a video message to all military members in which he noted that suicides “are sadly on the rise.”
“From private to general, we shoulder an obligation to look and listen for signs and we stand ready to intervene and assist our follow service member or battle buddy in time of need,” Battaglia said.
The Sergeant Major is exactly right. Any service member who sees trouble signs from another troop should encourage that person to get help — and to help them with it, if need be, And there’s nothing wrong with using the chain of command, e.g. ‘hey, Sergeant, I’m worried about Jones — something seems to be eating his azz lately and he doesn’t want to talk about it.’
If the unit’s leadership is doing its job, they’ll look into it and get Jones help if he really does need it. It’s PM for the unit; just like periodically checking the oil in your military vehicle or cleaning your weapon. It may not require any action to fix, but you check it out just the same.

Skylights are great in the winter, letting in the sun’s warmth and light. But in summer, even with adjustable blinds, those searing rectangles of sunshine can turn the living room into an oven! With a ladder, some inexpensive room-darkening shades, and a few push pins, I bring the temperature and energy bills down a notch. We can’t control everything, but we can do little things that add up.
