Remember those right-wing bloggers and commentators who got bent out of shape by the creation of “African Americans for Obama,” accusing Obama of playing the race card or even being racist?
Just this week, Victor Davis Hanson was complaining that to Obama, “‘Us’ now means all sorts of targeted appeals to identity groups like African-Americans for Obama, Latinos for Obama, gays for Obamas, greens for Obama, or students for Obama.”
Yet Hanson and his colleagues were oddly silent this week when Mitt Romney announced the creation of “Juntos Con Romney,” or “together with Romney,” a team led by former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez to “help guide the campaign on important Hispanic initiatives and outreach.”
Nor did they complain when Romney produced ads such as these:
(Among other things, the ad promises that on Day One — Dia Uno — Romney will introduce tax cuts “that reward job creators, not punish them.” That means either higher deficits or higher taxes on the rest of us, but I digress.)
Personally, I’m glad to see Romney making the effort, hypocritical as it may be in some ways. As Jeb Bush noted this morning on CBS, the GOP needs to change its approach on immigration issues and its attitudes toward immigration.
“I worry that it’s shortsighted because tonally, in terms of the tone of the debate, it sends a signal ‘we want your support but you really can’t join our team…,’” Bush said. “Demographically, Latino voters, Hispanic voters, are gonna be important in this election but, going forward, even more so. … I think there needs to be a lot more intense efforts to recognize the demographics of the country are changing and our messaging, not our views, not our principles … need to change as well.”
Bush, for example, has endorsed the concept of a DREAM Act allowing young immigrants who were brought here illegally as children to attend college. Gutierrez, the chair of “Juntos con Romney,” has also endorsed the legislation. Romney has said he would veto such a bill.
And rather than be frightened or angered at the sound of Spanish, Bush argues that “When we hear foreign languages in the streets of America, that is a validation of the Republican vision to create a place where people want to come and make their lives.”
Romney, in contrast, has long supported making English the nation’s official language, an effort that many Hispanics see as an insult. In other words, while Romney may make superficial gestures of inclusion, and while he personally may feel differently, he is too weak to try to challenge forces within his party that make tangible, effective outreach impossible.

GT,
Alabama’s starting nose guard Jesse Williams is of Samoan ancestry. I think he’s actually an Australian citizen but he is playing at Bama with no problem.
I remember reading about Chester Brown but it makes no sense to me because even if he or his family is here illegally our colleges offer full schollys to foreign students all the time. I can’t understand what the problem would be in his case.

Marco Rubio is suppose to introduce acts in the Senate that would lighten the load on illegals in this country, sometime this summer. Where was Rubio when Newt and his GOP choir were throwing red meat out to the crowd in Fla. during that debate. One thing I can say about a Klansman, he is consistant. I don’t think JB Stoner would have picked Herman Cain to be his VP running mate, but if asked I bet Cain would have been proud to run.

Cheesy, here’s what I think of “trickle down”, it starts around the middle.
Don’t Forget,
There is no such thing as “trickle down” economics. Its just a catchphrase that liberals came up with to criticize the Reagan revolution. After all when you can’t dispute the 16.1 million jobs created under Reagan or the 21 million new jobs from the trough of the 81-82 recession then you are often left with little more than childish catchphrases.
As a matter of fact there was a conservative economist who put out a public challenge to any liberal to come up with a conservative economist or politician who espouses any such thing as a “trickle down” economic theory. To date no one has met that challenge.

So white retirees who move to an American enclave in Mexico when they retire are on an equal footing with ’such people?’

GT,
Part of the problem is knee jerk responses that if you are against immigration that its got to be “hate”. I happen to be pro immigration- I just want it to be orderly is all. And the reality is that there are costs associated with illegal immigration. There is an enormous toll on our health care, judicial, educational, and social services systems. Talking about the obvious costs to us and our society does not constitute “hate”.
And the ironic thing is that the people affected most by illegal immigration are the people at the bottom of our economic rung- mostly unskilled labor, blacks in particular affected by downward pressure on wages. I’ve seen several studies which have shown that illegal labor puts downward pressure on wages for unskilled labor at around 15%.
So its a complex issue and I don’t think that simply attributing “hate” to people who oppose immigration is helpful.

A major feature of these policies was the reduction of tax rates on capital gains, corporate income, and higher individual incomes, along with the reduction or elimination of various excise taxes. David Stockman, who as Reagan’s budget director championed these cuts at first but then became skeptical of them, told journalist William Greider that the term “supply-side economics” was used to promote a trickle-down idea.[7]
“ “It’s kind of hard to sell ‘trickle down,’ so the supply-side formula was the only way to get a tax policy that was really ‘trickle down.’ Supply-side is ‘trickle-down’ theory.”[8]

Excellent Article by a very liberal professor !
“Why working-class people vote conservative”
First paragraph: “Why on Earth would a working-class person ever vote for a conservative candidate? This question has obsessed the American left since Ronald Reagan first captured the votes of so many union members, farmers, urban Catholics and other relatively powerless people – the so-called “Reagan Democrats”. Isn’t the Republican party the party of big business? Don’t the Democrats stand up for the little guy, and try to redistribute the wealth downwards?”
Last paragraph: “In sum, the left has a tendency to place caring for the weak, sick and vulnerable above all other moral concerns. It is admirable and necessary that some political party stands up for victims of injustice, racism or bad luck. But in focusing so much on the needy, the left often fails to address – and sometimes violates – other moral needs, hopes and concerns. When working-class people vote conservative, as most do in the US, they are not voting against their self-interest; they are voting for their moral interest. They are voting for the party that serves to them a more satisfying moral cuisine. The left in the UK and USA should think hard about their recipe for success in the 21st century.”

Not sure you saw this on the previous thread:
“I realize you’re being ganged up on and I always feel obliged to defend the underdog, so read this as a defense. I try to respect your beliefs, even though they’re different from mine. I won’t call you a bigot. You’re not. You do put thought into it. However, you treat the Bible like a Chinese menu. So do we all. But if you would just go ahead and acknowledge that, and then tell how you came to pick the particular one and ignore the others, you’d have more credibility, imauo.”
And this my friend is where we disagree on that subject:
1) Many factors must be taken into account ………. O.T. ceremonial law/eating shellfish ? (no longer applicable to the N.T. Christian). Even Jesus violated the sabbath rules to make that point.
2) Context ? Always important !

It was Thomas Sowell who issued that challenge and he noted that David Stockman is the only conservative person to have ever used that term. Otherwise it is nothing more than a catchphrase and nobody considers “trickle down” as an actual serious term or theory.
josef,
Like I said its a complex issue. The hard part is getting at a true analysis as to whether or not immigrants benefits outweigh their costs. My view is that short term they do not but longer term they do. From there the only issue I would have is whether or not they are assimilating and becoming Americans first and foremost by the 2nd generation similarly to previous immigrants. If not then the last thing we need is further Balkanization of America.

This whole “illegal” thing is stupid. Here in Georgia it will disappear as soon as the independent farms that used migrant labor are bankrupted and bought out for pennies on the dollar by the big churn and burn “farms.” At that point the issue will “disappear’ and the illegals will be back picking cotton , peanuts, peaches, and whatever the hell else the Republicans need picked. It is funny to see Slick Willy walk the tightrope between loyalty to the party and loyalty to a president which he hates beyond all other. The glowing superlatives that only Clinton can do come across as pretty empty, especially when he admits that Romney is a pretty fair business man and that we are definitely in recession…. two things that Bozo and the gang are hot as hell about. Then even the Clinton staff states that it “must be because of his age”. So, apparently they think that he is suffering from dementia at age 65. He is being called the “Newt Gingrich” of the Democratic party. And two fairly high ranking Democratic spokespersons admitted that Hillary would have made a better president than Bozo, something that most every knew except for guilt ridden white liberals and blacks.

The more salient point, that I tried to make this AM is that there is no “universal economic theory” that will work in all situations. When Reagan was in office you had a “suppy side” problem with high inflation. Top marginal rates were 70% and capital gains taxes were 40%. That’s a much different problem than we have today.

And I don’t blame them…and most of them DO speak English and quite well, they just don’t in Quebec. Most of the Anglo Canadians don’t speak French and didn’t when they came to Quebec.
*****
A story…when L’il Bit was about nine, we took her to Quebec so she could use her French in a daily environment. One of her tasks was to take care of posting her cards. We stopped in a small town and went in the PO. Unmentionable was having to nudge her and was doing so in English. When she went to the counter and made her request in French, the clerk was ever so gracious with her and, looking at us, complimented us in English and asked where we were from. When I spoke to her in French and she heard the Louisiana accent, she went ga-ga as so many Quebecois do when they hear it. She spoke to Unmentionable in French, but he shook his head, telling her he didn’t speak it. We chit chatted a couple of minutes more and made our exit. Outside, a middle aged couple stopped us and asked, in English, if we would be kind enough to help them take care of their PO needs since, “we don’t speak French.” We looked a bit surprised, and Unmentionable says, “she speaks English.” “She won’t with us.” “She did with me, what makes you think she won’t with y’all.” “We’re Canadian. You have an American accent. They’ll speak English with you, but not with us.”
Unfair? Perhaps. Tit for tat? Certainly. But here in the good Ole USA where it was not forced, and the other colonial language was accepted and tolerated as a language of daily discourse, the locals became bilingual rapidly. Both languages were respected, English was the language of access.

“blame” ‘blameocrats’ and “its what they do”
If you know who robbed the liquor store and point at them & say

cynical “inclusion” stunt. Maybe they’re thinking of purging the
snakehandlers & teabaggers by 2016, who knows. But there

immediate objective is to not go extinct before 2020. Quite
a task for them.

I tried to refrain from bashing Obama this evening, but this piece on Obama is killing the Democratic Party is too good not to share.
