John Edwards is guilty of many things — stupidity, venality, arrogance and a callous cruelty among others — but a jury of his peers has found him not guilty of Count Three in the six-count federal indictment against him.
The jury deadlocked on the remaining five charges, and the judge in the case has declared a mistrial on those counts.
For the time being, at least, the verdict means that Edwards has won his gamble not to admit guilt and to fight the charges against him, which focus on alleged abuse of campaign finance laws. I can’t claim to have followed the case closely enough to have an opinion on the legal outcome, in part because as indicated above, I had already reached a conclusion about the man himself, and it wasn’t good. It was enough to know that the country had dodged a bullet in not elevating him to the vice presidency or higher, and that his reputation was forever ruined.
As Roy Barnes, a former Edwards supporter, put it recently, “There are some people who ought to be taken out from a courthouse, tied to an oak tree and just whipped. I think he fits into that category.”
I’m sure Barnes was speaking figuratively when he said that. At least I think he was.
Maybe.

Count 1: Conspiracy (maximum 5-year sentence)
Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina, is accused of conspiring to receive and conceal contributions in excess of the allowed limits from Rachel “Bunny” Mellon and Fred Baron, a now-deceased Texas lawyer who was Edwards’ finance chairman. Under the Federal Election Campaign Act, the most an individual could contribute to any candidate in 2008 was $2,300 in the primary election and $2,300 in the general election.
Prosecutors argued that Edwards, while a candidate for federal office, accepted $725,000 from Mellon and more than $200,000 from Baron. Counts 2-5 reflect that accusation.
Count 2: Illegal campaign contributions (maximum 5-year sentence)
Edwards is accused of receiving contributions from Mellon in excess of federal limits in 2007.
Count 3: Illegal campaign contributions (maximum 5-year sentence)
Edwards is accused of receiving contributions from Mellon in excess of of federal limits in 2008.
Count 4: Illegal campaign contributions (maximum 5-year sentence)
Edwards is accused of receiving contributions from Baron in excess of federal limits in 2007.
Count 5: Illegal campaign contributions (maximum 5-year sentence)
Edwards is accused of receiving contributions from Baron in excess of of federal limits in 2008.
Count 6: False statements (maximum 5-year sentence)
Edwards is accused of hiding from his presidential committee the hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions from Mellon and Baron, causing that committee to create and submit inaccurate campaign finance reports to the Federal Election Commission.

In 1984 Edwards was assigned to a medical malpractice lawsuit that had been perceived to be unwinnable; the firm had only accepted it as a favor to an attorney and state senator who did not want to keep it. Nevertheless, Edwards won a $3.7 million verdict on behalf of his client, who had suffered permanent brain and nerve damage after a doctor prescribed an overdose of the anti-alcoholism drug Antabuse during alcohol aversion therapy.

Edwards will get judgment someday. I didn’t follow this case all that closely either but thought I understood that count 3 was the strongest count against Edwards that was presented. If that’ true it seems strange that the jury would find him not guilty on count 3 but deadlock on the other 5 weaker counts. It would seem that they would have found him not guilty on all counts.

Or this one?
The biggest case of his legal career was a 1996 product liability lawsuit against Sta-Rite, the manufacturer of a defective pool drain cover. The case involved Valerie Lakey, a three-year-old girl who was disemboweled by the suction power of the pool drain pump when she sat on an open pool drain whose protective cover had been removed by other children at the pool, after the swim club had failed to install the cover properly. Despite 12 prior suits with similar claims, Sta-Rite continued to make and sell drain covers lacking warnings. Sta-Rite protested that an additional warning would have made no difference because the pool owners already knew the importance of keeping the cover secured.

Mr. Bookman,
Am I correct in my understanding that someone can shovel millions of dollars to a Super PAC –anonymously– and the Super PAC’s handlers can spend that money pretty much any which way they want to? No questions answered?
If so, doesn’t it seem like John Edwards is being singled out for prosecution because people think he’s a scum? How many times are these particular charges investigated or prosecuted in any given decade?
Not a fan of his self-indulgent personal decisions that hurt the wonderful woman who married him and removed him as an effective advocate for America’s (now mostly voiceless) poor, but then (a) this behavior is in no way unique to John Edwards or Democratic Presidential candidates, and (b) someone else’s marriage is none of my business.

That’s just one of them. Think they are all like that? Edwards was singly responsible for the soaring malpractice insurance premiums for neurosurgeons, OB and pediatrics in NC. He was the recipient of 50 verdicts in excess of 1M dollars. 31 of these cases were malpractice cases. In one of the worst, in which his client was awarded 23M dollars for convincing a jury that a baby born with cerebral palsy suffered oxygen loss at delivery, he dramatized the case by playing the baby in front of the jury, speaking in baby language to dramatize the event. He is a despicable ambulance chasing jerk who made most of his money at the expense of mostly well meaning physicians.

But the liberals were “this close” to choosing this guy as being their guy. This explains how Obama got elected, doesn’t it? This is what happens when the press and the people fawn over the image of a candidate and don’t lgive a critical eye to the real person and what they are all about. And to this day, we still don’t know what Obama is all about. Obama’s campaign is in deep, deep do-do. He has a bunch of young, over educated and spoiled ideologues running it who cannot see the forest for the trees. Useful idiots if you will. After what happened in Boston, Axlerod and Obama must be panicking. Even the good Governor of that state had to stick with Romney and Bain.
Win or lose, I cannot wait until the Wisconsin Governor’s recall election next Tuesday. That will be a referendum on what the American people believe about the Obama administrations way of doing business (funneling public dollars to unions and special interests). If Walker stays in Wisconsin, Obama better start packing.

&1, your impassioned, Edwards-like (LOL!) eloquence aside, I believe this is the case you are referring to…
In 1985, Edwards represented a five-year-old child born with cerebral palsy – a child whose mother’s doctor did not choose to perform an immediate Caesarean delivery when a fetal monitor showed she was in distress.
Edwards won a $6.5 million verdict for his client, but five weeks later, the presiding judge sustained the verdict, but overturned the award on grounds that it was “excessive” and that it appeared “to have been given under the influence of passion and prejudice,” adding that in his opinion “the evidence was insufficient to support the verdict.”
He offered the plaintiffs $3.25 million, half of the jury’s award, but the child’s family appealed the case and received $4.25 million in a settlement.
Winning this case established the North Carolina precedent of physician and hospital liability for failing to determine if the patient understood the risks of a particular procedure.

I guess the DA couldn’t seal the deal in this case. Had the state of North Carolina passed a bill to retroactively make it illegal to be a scumbag, they would have easily gotten a conviction in this case. However, being a scumbag is not, in itself, illegal. Whether you think or know someone is guilty, when it comes to court proceedings, you have to be able to prove it. In the case of the defense, all they need to do is muddy the waters a bit, and you end up with results such as this.
—————————-
Win or lose, I cannot wait until the Wisconsin Governor’s recall election next Tuesday. That will be a referendum on what the American people believe about the Obama administrations way of doing business (funneling public dollars to unions and special interests).
No, Wisconsin will be a referendum on what the people of Wisconsin think about recalling Walker. That election has nothing to do with Obama or the nation regardless to how either party tries to spin it. I swear, some people can turn a baptism into the political battle of the year.

He, like the Kennedys, can espouse liberal ideology….he has his. Folks like the Kennedys could vote for every give-away program out there, because no matter how much it cost the average tax-payer, they had more $ than a show-pony could jump over. Edwards, Kerry (see T. Heinz Kerry) etc. were not liberal icons….they just went after a voting base. I’m glad the sob got tripped up…the ends justify the means.

Restrained? Yeah, guess so. I might add that in many states, like Hawaii and others, there is a state ordered arbitration board that is composed of physicians, dentists, attorneys, clergy and lay personnel that meets and rules on every malpractice case that is filed in the state. Their decisions are not binding, however, if they rule that a suit is not valid, it was rare that that suit ever made it to court. That did not keep my malpractice premiums down, however. Surgeons paid an average of 100K/yr, up front on January 1st in cash… no payment plans. Without this, your admission privileges to every hospital in town were void. This is a burden which we had to bear for the privilege of practicing surgery, however one that was difficult to pass on to our patients. For three of us in the same office the bill was about 300K. I am not saying that people like Edwards were soley responsible for this but they definitely had a role in making fees rise, insurance premiums soar and making attorneys a lot of money.

Peter,
Another view would be that he stuck us with numerous federal programs and crap that we are still paying for today. Fannie and Freddie- front and center of the housing meltdown, came during the new deal. And as just one example he came up with price supports for farming. Which is why today we still have millionaires being subsidized by taxpayers.
Moral of the story- a lot of well meaning govt programs that started under his tenure we cannot get rid of today and some of those programs such as farm subsidies do not support small plot farmers but rather large scale commercial farmers. But we’re still stuck with the bill decades later.

Quick opinion from Bruno: I’m obviously not a John Edwards fan, but I think the proposed 30 year jail term was excessive for a financial crime. Murderers and rapists get less. There is a movement in this country to hand out long sentences, but I think we need to have some compassion mixed in. In his case, he would have died in prison for diverting campaign funds.

Peter,
My beef is that I think his administration just set the tone for a much more expansive govt role in the economy from that point going forward. Certainly some of his emergency measures were needed but overall I just think that starting with his administration that we went from a more market oriented economy to an economy with ever more govt middling in it. That’s all.

Had the media vetted Barack HUSSEIN Obama like they did Edwards, we would not be in the economic mess that currently plagues us. Edwards is a scumbag and the media saved us from 4 years of embarrassment by outing him. Barack HUSSEIN Obama is a socialist leaning liberal empty suit, that the media allowed to CLAIM to be a centrist. Had they treated him like they did Edwards, he would be a distant memory, relegated to the anonymity he so richly deserves.
WHO CARES how Edwards spent money people DONATED to his campaign? If people are upset with the way the money was spent, they could request a refund from the campaign or sue him for a return of those donations. The trial was ANOTHER waste of my tax dollars, probably costing us well over a million bucks to prosecute a victimless crime. Look at the Roger Clemens trial for instance. It is already over 3 weeks long for LYING TO CONGRESS!?!?! THIS IS A RIDICULOUS WASTE!
I think every President who ever made a state of the union address would be as guilty as Clemens. Government lawyers need to stop trying to make a name for themselves and get back to prosecuting REAL CRIMES.

TBs, His PRESIDENCY has vetted him NOW. I’m talking about 2008, when we could have AVOIDED this disaster. All the “media” did in ‘08 was fawn over him. It was as if he was the 2nd coming, for Pete’s sake. Had anybody in the media pointed out his total lack of ANY KIND of usable experience rather than talking about how nice he looked or how articulate he was, he would never have even been considered for that office.

Is it really the responsibility of the media to inform you of such things, or are you trying to make up for a lack of the GOP doing their due dilligence in opposition research? That talking point is so debunked from the time you even think about it. Had Obama not been vetted enough, how would the people of the US know about the names Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, Saul Alinsky, Barry Soetero, and every other thing that was brought up between the Clinton and McCain camps?
If there are so-called bomb shells that have not been discovered about Obama, what does that say about the ability of GOP operatives to effectively conduct opposition research? After all, it’s usually that research that gets leaked to media outlets to generate buzz….

“The ruling is certainly founded in logic and reason. The court ruled that the federal government cannot confer benefits on those who were married under Georgia law or Kansas law and then deny benefits to those married under Massachusetts law, which allows gay couples to marry.”
- Jay, from previous column.
First, reason and logic are roughly synonymous – let’s get that redundancy out of the way first. Secondly, I think people like Jay aren’t really thinking the gay marriage thing through very clearly. If gay marriage is eventually ruled “constitutional” (whatever that means these days), then it is almost certain that polygamy will be as well. Once that happens, you can have an adult male marrying (with parental consent) several boys 13 or older in some states. Save for the age of consent laws and the necessity of marriage, you have just given NAMBLA members much of what they could hope for. Scalia is right on this matter: once you take morality out of the equation (as in gay relationships), then there can be virtually no logical end to what defines marriage.
What makes gay relationships now “acceptable” to many non-gays? I believe it is the argument that homosexuals cannot help being who they are – we shouldn’t discriminate against people for what they cannot help (their race, gender, age and the like). And the only legitimate way to argue that is to claim that gays are born that way. But, if you argue that, then you must concede that pedophiles (to name but one group of people given over to abnormal sexual relationships) are as well. If you think otherwise, let’s hear the rationale for claiming that gays and only gays are born with abnormal sexual “orientations”.

Mark Randall M“ack” Wolford, 44 – whose own father died in 1983 after suffering a fatal bite – had been bitten before and survived. But he died earlier this week after witnesses say a timber rattler bit him on the thigh. Wolford’s sister and a freelance photographer told media outlets it happened during a Sunday service at Panther State Forest.

Hmmm….
#1 McCain showed he was incapable of multitasking when an emergency popped up. He suspended his campaign to return to DC when the meltdown hit full force.
By that token, had McCain been in office when Egypt, Libya, and Iran all went batsh*t crazy, what would he have done? He already talked about bombing Iran. He wanted to bomb Libya. Would he have gone for the hat trick and bombed all three????
#2 McCain’s choice for VP didn’t give many people much enthusiasm, beyond the GOP base, for voting for the GOP candidate. Add the fact that she didn’t step in and continue to campaign as one would expect for the #2 on the ticket, and people probably got the idea tha would be how things would operate under their administration.
I don’t think there’s any evidence to point that McCain would have been any different, for better or worse, than Obama other than speculation. One thing for sure, there would have been very little that the GOP could have proven that would support blaming the US economy on the opposition though.

I have read that Canada has unenforced polygamy laws – I guess like sodomy laws were here.
“Is there a major push for polygamy in the US?”
That is immaterial (unless you want to say that the SCOTUS is nothing more than a windmill). Logically, once you start broadening the historic and tacitly understood and definition of marriage beyond a man and a woman, then why would not polygamy be constitutional? Laws against it did not exist in the US until the mid 10th century, it is practiced today in a number of cultures and there is plenty of historical precedent for it. I mean, it not something I just though up!
“It seems you are setting up your own “slippery slope” even though it is not based on fact but opinion.”
Gay marriage was, in fact, unthinkable by most everyone 50 years ago. Are you wanting to claim that you are able to better see into the future than your grandfather? Nah, bro. THAT was a moronic statement, and it reeks of nannyism. The press is there to report the news, whether good or bad, without fear of being controlled by the government as a propaganda tool. The press does not have a responsibility to vet anything beyond the accuracy of what they are reporting on.

Jay-There is a story here that you might be interested in following. Without deliberating on Edwards’ guilt or innocence or has lack of moral compass, the latter being certainly established, I offer the following. The Bush appointed Republican US Attorney George Holding stayed over after the Obama election with the sole purpose of “getting” John Edwards. Holding comes from a North Carolina family that owns First Citizens Bank which has expanded from its small town (Smithfield, NC) roots to a strong presence in the Southeast. Not sure what started the acrimony. Perhaps Edwards in his heyday got a large judgment against the family bank. Whatever, Holding talked the Obama adminsitration into allowing him to stay on as US Attorney (Unusual generally viewed as a patronage job). One day before leaving the job, Holding secured the indictment of Edwards on 6 counts. The next day after leaving office, Holding announced that he was running from Congress with the Edwards indictment prominent in his CV. The Obama Justice Department, concerned about favoring fellow Democrats, allowed the indictments to stand. I am not suggesting that this another Ted Stevens incident, but it sure does look like another ill intended Justice Department activity. Just saying.

Fail. There are no LOGICAL grounds for denying people the RIGHT to marry several people (for the reasons I gave in my other post). Now, prove me wrong by some other means than an emotional dismissal (which doesn’t refute the logic of my argument). If the SCOTUS decides otherwise, it will not be on LOGICAL grounds (as when they ruled segregation “constitutional” in 1896). You cannot reach two diametrically opposed positions at different times and claim they were logical and right. Now if that is what you are claiming, you MUST concede that is is quite possible that in the future what is now inconceivable to you may in fact happen (like gay marriage).

Answer thess question for me, how did you accomplish your due dilligence on Obama in 2008? What info did you find that made you come to the decision that he would be a “disaster”? Where did you find this information? Who did you pay to find it for you? If you were able to obtain that information on your own without the media vetting him, as you insinuated earlier, what obstacle was there that kept anybody else from doing the same exact thing?

I didn’t HAVE to do that in 2008 because SOME media outlets actually did their jobs,
Why are you whining about the media not vetting him then? Have you not realized that not all media outlets report the same exact stories unless it’s something very serious?
And your statement is nannyism in it’s purest form. You’re saying that people are incapable of doing their own research on who they want to vote for, and they must have the media to report it to them. Informational welfare is what you’re suggesting.

Homosexuality is wrong in my eyes, but no worse than many other wrongs (like adultery or theft). I am simply against gay marriage and gay adoption. Period. I am likewise against polygamy. But to impose your choice on me is too much. Gay marriage is at best a state rights issue – not a federal one. That is my beef. I can accept – though I don’t condone it – gay marriage at the state level. But I don’t want that acceptance forced upon me at the federal level. I can always move out of a state to another more in agreement with my views. To rubber stamp this at the federal level is a tyranny of the minority (whose “rights” – or should I say wants – can be “protected” at the state level).

I knew about Obama’s Indonesia adventures and such because there were two books out that he wrote/co-authored that basically gave a blueprint to how he acted and thought. He sat in the state house in Illinois, so there was a voting record there. He sat in DC in the Senate chambers, so he had a record there. So, you can save the media vetting crap for those who frequent Free Republic, Red State, and other Conservative media outlets that will co-sign that BS with you.
As I stated earlier, any lack of MEDIA stories is not the fault of the media. If the GOP opposition research had done THEIR due dilligence, everything that was reported by SOME MEDIA outlets would have easily been broadcast by all of them if it were really newsworthy.

Therein lies the problem. The homosexual community wants their sexual lifestyle to be considered normal. It’s not normal, however, the left uses this as an issue to garner another voting block. Homosexuals are a small voting block by themselves but the left gets a multiplier by enlisting their sympathizers and creating a cause. The left uses a cause mentality to expand its otherwise narrow message. Recon, an interesting fact to me is that consistently, polls show a majority of Americans (59% or so) don’t have a problem with gay marriage, but in ALL 38 states where it has gone on the ballot, it has been voted down. Do you think that the social pressure to conform to leftist ideals is intense? In a public “poll” people say one thing, but in a secret ballot, they do the opposite. Either that, or they only poll people in NY and Cali.

Namecalling… First sign that you’ve lost the debate. However, I’ll continue to spar with you just because I feel like having a bit of fun tonight….
The GOP has their own media outlets that have more effect on the national dialogue than all the “liberal” media combined. I guess you forget how quickly the national dialogue shifted from “Jobs, jobs, jobs” to “we’re drowning in debt” in 2010-2011. That was not because of some Democratic push, that was all GOP.
The whole myth of media bias is nothing but a ploy for conservatives to gain more tv and radio time to push their agenda. The fact that one can separate conservative media outlets from “mainstream media” while claiming the highest ratings should be a clue to someone with common sense that something’s amiss. However, those who feed on rhetoric can’t make the connection.
Not to mention the fact that the PRESS IS SUPPOSED TO BE UNBIASED.
And where did you get that little nugget from? The Press is supposed to report. You can’t even post here without bias, so why would you expect anybody else to write or report something without bias? There is bias everywhere, and it’s not going away. When you rely on opinionators to give you your “news”, you end up thinking just as you do. Opposition research is indeed bias, so I’m glad that you have at least one working brain cell. That said, if it’s newsworthy, whether it’s biased or not, it will get reported.
Funny you resort to the moveon.org comment. I guess that one brain cell has narcoleptic and fell asleep on you right at a very key moment. I won’t lower myself to your level and call you a name. I do have a level of self-esteem.

My argument is that the acceptance of gay marriage can logically lead to the acceptance of polygamy.
Logically?
It is pure sociological nonsense. That would be laughed out of any and every scientific study.
Along that line, sometimes a couple of ex-marine here tries to equate homosexuality with incest or pedophilia, which is also an completely insane proposition.
They read like some sort of sophist and demented Sexual Domino Theories…

“Couldn’t find a country that has gone from gay marriage to polygamy, huh?”
Let’s trace through your lack of reasoning here. Gay marriage was not legal anywhere I know 100 years ago. If you had made the claim that gay marriage would never be legalized back then (because there was no country that had allowed it), how right would you have been? But now, you want to claim that because it hasn’t happened yet, it won’t. Do you respect the lessons history might teach us?

Why Can’t I Own a Canadian?
October 2002
Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a east coast resident, which was posted on the Internet. It’s funny, as well as informative:
Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:
When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord – Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness – Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?
I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination – Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this?
Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? – Lev.24:10-16. Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God’s word is eternal and unchanging.
Your devoted fan,
Jim

No, but TC has.
And the article that he himself linked further refutes his Illogical opinion:
Such arguments, often referred to as the “parade of horribles,” are logically flawed, said Jennifer C. Pizer, a professor at the law school at the University of California, Los Angeles, and legal director for the school’s Williams Institute, which focuses on sexual orientation law.
The questions surrounding whether same-sex couples should be allowed to marry are significantly different from those involved in criminal prosecution of multiple marriages, Ms. Pizer noted. Same-sex couples are seeking merely to participate in the existing system of family law for married couples, she said, while “you’d have to restructure the family law system in a pretty fundamental way” to recognize polygamy.
Professor Turley called the one-thing-leads-to-another arguments “a bit of a constitutional canard,” and argued that removing criminal penalties for polygamy “will take society nowhere in particular.”

“And the article that he himself linked further refutes his Illogical opinion:”
How so? By citing the opinion of a single law professor? Here (from a FOX article):
“The Utah Supreme Court upheld the law in 2006 as part of an appeal of a polygamist police officer’s 2003 conviction on bigamy and child sex charges. The case began as an investigation into the child sex allegations.
In a dissenting opinion, the chief justice agreed that Utah unfairly applied its bigamy law to polygamists and that it “oversteps the lines protecting the free exercise of religion and the privacy of intimate, personal relationships between consenting adults.”
Some scholars say polygamy should be decriminalized not just on First Amendment or privacy grounds, but because it would help society better regulate families.
Victims of abuse, which some believe is inherent in plural communities, might feel more comfortable seeking assistance if they don’t also fear prosecution, Lyndon State College anthropology professor Janet Bennion said.
“Laws that criminalize polygamy isolate and alienate … it’s not polygamy per se that leads to abuse, that can be present in monogamy,” Bennion said. “We really should allow more freedoms for any kind of alternative marriage.
“If we threaten polygamy, other forms will be threatened, such as gay and lesbian marriage,” she said.”

And then you do what exactly? Cite a professor.
Victims of abuse, which some believe is inherent in plural communities, might feel more comfortable seeking assistance if they don’t also fear prosecution, Lyndon State College anthropology professor Janet Bennion said.
Too funny.

That’s simple. I’m straight and I’ve always known I was. I have many friends who are men but I’m simply not attracted to them in “that way”. So when I meet a gay person I can only conclude that they did not “choose” to be that way since I didn’t choose to be the way I am. Being bi may be another matter but that’s not the subject here and, really I would think that anyone who thinks it is a choice is likely bi.

I’ve said this before, but maybe since it’s on topic i’ll mention it again.
Jay never trusted Edwards; he seems to have had him sussed as a phony from the word go (i believe he’d interviewed the guy back in 2004 and wasn’t impressed).
During the primary battles of 2008, Edwards was the only populist running, and I actually early-voted for him in the primary. Not because I thought he had much of a shot, but I thought it would send a message to the corporatists (Hillary and Barack) who were leading in the polls at the time. Of course Edwards dropped out before Super Tuesday, somewhat shockingly at the time, of course now we know why.
I guess I wouldn’t go as far as Roy Barnes in my assessment of this very flawed individual, but obviously I’m pretty pissed off that Edwards put himself in a position where, had he managed to win the nomination, he would’ve been destroyed by what McCain’s team surely would’ve found out.
He’s still fairly young, plenty of time to redeem himself as a human being. Hope he stays hell and gone from politics, and sticks to advocating for the people he claimed to care about, four years ago.

No. Because that would mean rewriting the entirety of all laws pertaining to marriage that are currently on the books. It’s easier, quicker, and cheaper to just define marriage as a legal contract between two consenting adults. Then all of those laws would apply to all legal marriages.

Pedophilia seems to fall into that category. How many of these guys are imprisoned, released and then go right an do it all over again. Who would wish that kind of grief upon themselves?

Okay, I make this comment everytime we go here. I ought to just put it so I can cut and paste.
I really don’t concern myself with too much of the how and why. I just accept it as a given part of who I am. Like Lilly Tomlin the night a heckler asked the question. She said, “you know, I’ve been asked that so much lately, I’ve actually begun to think about it myself.”
I lean toward the genetic and here is why, ancestrally uppity snob that I am. I’ve got one of those family trees that goes back a long way and includes a goodly number of names a part of the Western Civ books…and it’s amazing the number of gay folks falling out of the tree when it’s shaken. My cousin Jack and I took to making a list of just the ones in our own lifespans..and there were a surprizing number and from all the various environments and family types…so, I don’t know…but it is interesting…

I don’t agree with his main points but neither do I completely dismiss them. Once you allow gay marriage you redefine marriage. And you can bet your ass that polygamists absolutely will challenge the marriage law- whether they will succeed is a different question.
Polygamy has a much lengthier history and tradition going back thousands of years and through many cultures than gay marriage. There is no reason why polygamists cannot and will not mount a challenge.
Now as far as opening the door for gay men from Nambla to marry young teenage boys 13 years of age I can’t see that ever- that’s hopping on the crazy train.
What I can and do see is polygamists knocking on the door pretty hard. And if that gets through then 30-50 years down the line what is there to stop gay men from marrying multiple 18- 20 year old young men in the same way straight men have taken advantage of and married far younger women. May seem crazy now but I would imagine that if you asked someone 50-60 years ago the about the issue of gay marriage they probably would have thought you certifiable. Hell even gays back then probably would have thought it was nuts to think gays could ever worry. Its not as far fetched as you guys think.
We will never get to the point of legalized pedophilia but it is possible for polygamy and the idea of older men(gay and straight) to take advantage of much younger 18-21 year olds in weaker economic and power circumstances.
Just a thought and for the record I don’t have much of a dog in this gay marriage fight. Not really my ithue.

The association is merely an immoral one in my mind and I am attacking the view that homosexuality is not immoral by trying to show that the grounds for accepting it could be applied to other abnormal forms of sexuality. I draw the line I do on scriptural grounds; I have no idea what grounds you draw the line upon other than perhaps an ever evolving situational morality (in ancient Greece, pedophila was acceptable).

A thirteen year old is not legally old enough to engage in a legal contract. Even in states where young marriages are allowed the parents must give their consent. Statutory rape is statutory rape, regardless of the willingness of the younger partner.

He has a point regarding sexual behavior, what is considered or once was considered abnormal or deviant, and situational sexual morality can certainly change over time and through cultures.
I hadn’t thought about it much before but what was or is considered normal or abnormal sexuality behaviors has been redefined in different cultures. The example of pedophilia once having been considered normal in Greece is an example.
And as I said look at the middle east. Its actually ingrained somewhat in their culture- poetry, literature, etc. At least that’s what I was taught in by my college history professor who had traveled extensively in the Middle east. Take it up with the Apostle Paul, TBS:
21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.
24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised.
- Romans 1
26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

I’m not saying that I fully agree with towncrier. Because I don’t think that just because we allow gay marriage that all of a sudden pedophiles are going to be marrying very young men.
What I am saying is that the more I think about it he has a valid point based just on what’s happened here. Looking at history just here in the U.S. regarding both gay marriage and abortion. Abortion was legalized in 73. How many people in the 40s or even the early 50s- scarcely 20 odd years earlier really thought that what in their view was murder would ever really be legal. Think about that for a bit. Same with gays. Did gays 30-40-50 years ago even fathom the idea that they would be able to marry? Societal attitudes and situational morality can change quickly. That’s all I’m saying.
And what we may think is completely abnormal or morally wrong may very well be different 30-40-50 years from now. Its not that far of a stretch given societal attitudes on gays and on abortion just 30-50 years ago before legalization of both.

“So you take it up with the your God…. Hopefully he forgives your bigotry…”
Christian or no, if He exists, He is your God as well. I hope he does forgive all of my sins, but arguing that homosexuality is wrong would not be one in His book. I have simply tried to show that the widespread acceptance of homosexuality to the point that gay marriage is now in view at a federal level has no clear moral or logical basis – it’s just okay because we say it is okay. I say it is not because the Bible says it is not – if it said otherwise, so would I. I am not smart or wise enough to know what behavior is truly good or bad for us – not by a long shot. If were an atheist, I could see little logical ground for endorsing any moral code. Logically, in a godless world, there is no difference between helping an old lady across the street or axe-murdering her. In 100 years or so, when all that knew her have turned to dust or if they human life is somehow destroyed, it makes no difference. Only emotionally does it matter to us in the here and now.

All that backpedaling and dancing around while pushing others to back up info while he dodged his own assertions, was a true testament to what he thought.
This isn’t the 1st time I have either read or been in discussion with him on this issue.
Saying he is against homosexuality because of x,y,z is one thing. Bringing on that SLIPPERY SLOPE of polygamy and pedophile and if I’m not mistaken saying “same category” is pure ignorance. His opinion and his ignorance on the issue
And I’m the one that is childish? It makes him feel better if he can bring in the others so he can somehow group all these people into one category. That is surely an assumption on my part but “same category” are his words not mine. That is how I came to my assumption, strictly based on his words

“Saying he is against homosexuality because of x,y,z is one thing. Bringing on that SLIPPERY SLOPE of polygamy and pedophile and if I’m not mistaken saying “same category” is pure ignorance. His opinion and his ignorance on the issue.”
It’s called a reductio ad absurdum argument. It is a valid form of argument, whether or not you think I executed it well or fairly.

Towncrier,
” I posted that as a real logical possibility (not “all of a sudden”), given gay marriage and polygamy being ruled constitutional.”
Then I misunderstood you.
“How could anyone argue otherwise (since existing laws permit the marriage of 13 year olds under certain conditions)?”
Speaking of all this things sure have changed just in the past 50 -100 years regarding marriage with children. My girlfriend’s aunt Lois married her husband when she was 14 and he was 20. It wasn’t child molesting back then. 60 years later they are still married. The other 2 sisters were also in their teens when they married and the men were about 5-7 years older. B was 15 and married a 22 year old man. The third was an old lady. She got married when she was over the hill at 17. Today those men would probably be put in jail but back then things was different. Specially out here in the pastureland up near Athens.

Women were around Jesus and his disciples from time to time (in appropriate settings) – the Bible says they helped support His ministry. But there is no evidence he hung out with them, say, at night or not in a public place or where there were lots of people.

Towncrier is a big boy with a reasoned argument. He don’t need no bailing out by me or anyone else.
My initial response on his first post was that he had jumped on the crazy train. But I judged too quickly( knee jerk response) and the more I thought about it and about societal changes and attitudes in our very lifetime the more I realized the man has a very valid, logical point whether you or I agree or disagree with him. That’s all.

That was in the presence of men at a meal and the woman in question kind of imposed herself on the gathering. I wouldn’t characterize that as “hanging out”. No temptation to sexual sin was even remotely possible in those scenarios.

His purpose was not to have a family, but to die for everyone at a relatively young age (33). It would have been irresponsible I suppose to start a family and then leave it without his support (my thought – not taken from the Bible). And and Paul indicates in one of his letters, His interests would have been divided as a married person. Besides, He said that people are not given in marriage in heaven but are like the angels.

He is either a liar, a lunatic or actually who he said he was (Lord).
yeah, Scout likes to post that assertion a lot as well. Looks like we have C. S. Lewis to thank for that one.
see also:
http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/jim_perry/trilemma.html
The argument which McDowell calls the “trilemma” is popular among amateur apologists for Christianity. It was first popularized by C.S. Lewis, and has become even more common since McDowell reworked it. It is logically weak, but it is rhetorically powerful–as its popularity and recurrence attest–and so worth considering in more detail than it might otherwise merit.
[...]
it is not the case that there are three and only three precisely-defined choices to be made here, but rather a vast continuum of possibilities. We don’t know with any level of confidence precisely what Jesus as a historical figure claimed for himself, and in any event if whatever he claimed was false there are a great diversity of possibilities, which include liar and lunatic (which McDowell has not successfully ruled out) but which also include many other options which do allow Jesus to be considered a sage or moral teacher and no more.
The trilemma argument does not support any particular opinion one way or another concerning Jesus. If one already believes that Jesus was the Christ of the Christian faith and hence Lord, then naturally one is disinclined to believe that he was anything else, and may favor the idea that other options are untenable. This argument, however, provides no logical support for one who doesn’t already believe to choose the “Lord” option out of all the others.

I asked the question last night why couldn’t a conservative State like North Carolina, full of conservative jurors convict a “typical liberal plantation master scum” (modifying here)?
The answer is that even in North Carolina you are innocent until PROVEN guilty….so the “pond scum” is innocent. Gotta love our system of law. America! I love it!

More evidence that the Obama economic ‘recovery’ is working; according to a recently released study, there are 126,000 fewer millionaires in the US since just last year.
Where did they go?
Bahamas? Curacao? Switzerland? Monaco?
Or where they just perhaps taxed out of the ranks, or businesses ruined and closed by the continual piling on of regulations from the govt, decreasing jobs, because they were not paying enough of their ‘fair share’ to subsidize the growing ranks of freeloaders?

Scout seems to forget that Jesus was not made “Divine” until the Council of Nicaea voted on it, around 400 years after his death as a political move to entrench the Catholic power base of Constantine. The Christian cult is most superbly “The Greatest Story Ever Sold”.
…and ask any Rabbi, if Jesus was 33, then he was most definitely married. It was law unless you were Essene, but the Bible does not mention that. Like I said…”The Greatest Story Ever Sold”.

I wasn’t aware NC voted 100% R in the last or any election, Normal. Do you have anything that might remotely support that? I realize that might be a bit of projection, but you do have to have 100% to convict somebody. Just 1 idiot juror could easily have prevented the conviction as was done in the Nichols case. It’ll be interesting to hear what the guilty/not guilty balance from the jurors.
And for the record, NC voted for Obama.

Ya know, if your “millions” are in the stock market and not liquid, you can lose that money and no longer be counted as a millionaire while still living in the US. Look at ol’ Zuck… He’s lost 25% of his value in Facebook since it IPO’d. If he was a borderline millionaire when shares first started trading, he wouldn’t be one now.
Limiting the choices to things that you “think” are the only possibilities is the first sign of a weak argument.
